is for appletini

Though hardcore martini-drinkers may cringe at the thought of it, the appletini, aka apple martini, is here to stay.  True, there’s nothing about this trendy concoction that remotely resembles a classic martini in the slightest.  After all, it’s sweet, it’s fruity, it often glows green … traditional? Nope. But oh-so fun and tasty nonetheless.

the ingredients
At its most basic, an apple martini typically consists of a vodka base spiked with the flavor of apple schnapps.  Apple schnapps is a sweet liqueur made from, you guessed it, apples. Sometimes it will simply be labeled apple schnapps. But head to your local liquor store and you might also find bottles labeled apple barrel schnapps, sour apple schnapps, sour apple pucker, or apple pucker.  Plain old apple schnapps and Apple Barrel Schnapps (made by ubiquitous Schnapps producer DeKuyper) are generally sweet, slightly golden in color, and very red-apply in flavor. The sour apple and pucker versions are generally neon-green in color, sweet-and-sour, and taste rather like a green Jolly Rancher.  Most bars will use the green stuff for their apple martinis, so if you’re looking to make an apple martini that’s exactly like the frou-frou cocktail you got at your favorite swanky bar, it’s probably pucker you want. If you’re of the opinion that drinks shouldn’t taste like candy, on the other hand, you might want to try non-sour-type schnapps. Basically, use whatever type of Apple Schnapps suits your fancy … and remember, these babies pack more of a punch than you might first realize, so sip slowly and enjoy.
