gimme some style! where to go for decorating inspiration
by Yee-Fan Sun
| 1 2

For a long time, I blamed the boxes. Making our latest move back home to North America, we found ourselves with not one but two big shipments of stuff. There was the new stuff from our previous digs in the UK. There was the old stuff we had thrown into storage before making that first transatlantic move. All that combined stuff, of course, came in boxes. I’d open one pile of boxes only to find another pile tucked just behind; finish that next heap only to open some closet door revealing still more boxed-up goodies. The unpacking seemed endless; the boxes were ubiquitous. Wedging my way through an apartment jam-packed with cardboard, decorating seemed an impossibility. I could barely see my space. Small wonder that I had no aesthetic vision for it, right?

This, then, was the excuse, until the unpacking made a sudden jump in progress, and suddenly, I found myself with a hodgepodge of furnishings and artwork, throw pillows and knick knacks, each waiting for me to find it the perfect spot. Seeing my old stuff all exposed now in this new space, I froze. It was time to start decorating, and I wasn’t at all sure where to begin.

No matter how many times I move house, there’s always that little intimidation factor as I find myself confronted with a bare space, and a wide open field of possibilities for what to do with it. A little motivational kick-in-the-pants is sometimes necessary. If you too have been having a hard time figuring out what the heck to do about decorating your digs, check out these sources guaranteed to get your decorating gears a-whirring …

surf city

The obvious first stop, since you’re already plunked down here in front of your computer screen, is to surf around online. But where in this great wide web should you mosey for the best ideas?

If you’re looking to do something different with your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, whatever, but can’t quite seem to get focused on exactly what kind of look you’re going for, check out bbc.co.uk’s fun design inspiration finder. The site lets you plug in a room, color, and/or style, then churns up a list of spiffed-up rooms from BBC TV program archives that meet your criteria. Each room design not only features a plethora of purty pictures, but contains specific tips for achieving the makeover as well, as well as a rough estimate of the budget involved.
