Snooze, Sit, Eat, Stash|  1 2 3 4

You’ve scoured the classifieds, hauled your butt all over town, and finally, found an apartment or house that satisfies both your budget and your living standards. Having signed the lease, you’re ready to move into your new place, and make it feel like home. But now, surrounded by 4 empty walls and a bare floor, you realize you’ve got no bed to sleep on, no seats to lounge on, no table to dine on, and nowhere to actually store all that stuff that’s still packed up in boxes.

Step one towards creating the first real home of your adult life: acquire essential furniture.

Snooze, sit, eat, stash: a bed, a sofa, a table, and storage. A place lacking any of these four basic items will never feel like a home. Don’t have a couple thousand dollars to just go out and buy everything you need? Never fear … because with a bit of time and a little imagination, you’ll be able to create hip digs for cheap.

Snooze…
Shortly after graduating from college, my boyfriend and I spent half a year in Australia sleeping on a makeshift bed comprised of 2 sleeping pads and 2 sleeping bags wrapped up in a sheet. We saved some money, sure, but we woke up every morning with stiff necks, sore backs, and vile moods. So trust me when I say that if there’s one piece of decent-quality furniture you’re going to buy, make it a bed.

If you happen to know someone who has a bed they can spare, you’re in luck—just haul it away to your new home and you’ve saved yourself several hundred bucks. But if all you can manage to scrounge up is the tiny twin bed you slept in as a child—and, given the fact that most us in our 20s will, from time to time at least, be sharing a sleep space with another human being, it is my firm belief that anything smaller than a full-size is too cozy for comfort— you’ll have to go bed-hunting elsewhere.

but wait, there's more!
