...and time for cheer holiday movie classics

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) get the DVD | Oh you're a mean one Mr. Grinch! This animated version of the beloved Dr. Seuss book is a must-see before you sit down with the family to chow down on all that Who Hash. How the Grinch Stole Christmas tells the tale of a small-hearted crank who lives all alone on the side of a mountain overlooking the town of Whosville. Annoyed at the Whos' incessant holiday cheer, he decides to put a damper on their celebrations, and finds himself getting a lesson in the Yuletide spirit instead. Boris Karloff is usually associated with Halloween since he was the original film Frankenstein, but it is his voice that brings the Grinch to life as the title character and the narrator. Add in the talent of Looney Toons illustrator Chuck Jones and the amazing Dr. Seuss and you have an instant holiday classic. Something to enjoy before you carve the Roast Beast.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) get the DVD | I have owned many "Charlie Brown Trees" in my life and it's true that sometimes they just need a little love (and, quite frankly, a whole lot of tinsel). In this childhood holiday favorite, Charlie Brown is tired of the rampant materialism of the Christmas season. As director of the school's Christmas play, he tries to restore the spirit of the season by featuring a sad-looking tree he's rescued from the lot -- an attempt that's greeted with mocking laughter from his cast. Poor Charlie Brown feels more disheartened with the holiday than ever -- until Linus helps him to learn the true meaning of Christmas in an ending that's sure to melt the hearts of any holiday scrooge. Meanwhile, getting to see the Peanuts gang dance around at play practice makes it worth watching alone. Unfortunately, the movie will leave one nagging question unanswered -- why is Charlie Brown so follically challenged?
Some other holiday films you and the family may enjoy…

Frosty the Snowman
(happy birthday!)
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Olive the Other Reindeer

With all these great holiday movies to choose from, what are you waiting for? Grab some hot cocoa, and snuggle up in front of the TV -- because you only get to see these once a year!

Vanessa Hofstetter lives in Shrewsbury, MA with her fiancé and their pet beta named Joefish. When not at work as an exhibit designer at a small local museum she is keeping busy planning her fall 2006 wedding. She enjoys putting up her holiday tree in late November and in elaborately wrapping holiday gifts, even thought they will get torn open! She believes in watching Christmas movies all year long and knows that there is scientific evidence that states that watching Frosty the Snowman in June actually makes it cooler outside. This is her first published article.
