Cool -- thanks for leading, Liv; I'll put a direct link for Blind Assassin later this afternoon.

Edited to add:
There's a direct link to the book now.

Eep! The two columns in the white area of the Digs Shop are overlapping each other. I'm using Netscape FYI. Just thought I'd let you know.

Hmm, that's odd; I use Netscape too and it looks fine on my end. Can you give me more details -- Mac or PC? Screen resolution? Default browser font sizes?

Alright, today's the big day. (Is it really November 18th already? Geez.) Anyway, here are some discussion questions to help get the wheels turning/discussion going. Feel free to use or ignore them as you wish.

1. What did you think of the book? Why?
2. How does the story-within-a-story-within-a-story of the blind assassin and the mute girl on Sakiel-Norn relate to the rest of the book? Are there other blind assassins in the novel? If so, who?
3. What did you think of Iris/Laura/Alex and their relationships to each other? Did you suspect the relationships that actually existed?
4. Richard and Winnifred—what part did they play in all of this?
5. The factory, the wars, their father all seemed interrelated to me. Do you think so? How did they influence Laura/Iris?
6. What message was Laura sending by coloring Iris’ wedding photos?
7. Do you think it’s true that “we’ll choose knowledge no matter what, we’ll maim ourselves in the process, we’ll stick our hands into the flames for it if necessary?” Why/why not?

Okay, I have to confess how much I totally suck -- I'm only on like page 150 of the book. So huge apologies -- I'm totally planning to talk about it once I actually finish (aiming for next weekend), but in the meantime, look forward to reading what other folks thought ...

I really liked this book. I read it last fall (and reread it a few times since) and I think it's really one of Margaret Atwood's best novel.

I liked the fact that there were several imbedded stories that seemed unrelated at first. All the pieces of the puzzles fitted perfectly, making the story whole.

That's what makes it such a good book to reread, because you can actually see the strings being pulled. I guess that's what Atwood was aiming for when she recopied the first chapter at the very end, where it now holds a totally different meaning.

I also found the characters had a lot of depth. No one is really downright good or evil, except maybe Richard. The sentiments depicted are always very complex (and thus realistic), tinted by fear, jealousy, envy... I had a little bit of difficulty believing in Laura's character. But then, she was meant to be a little unreal, while Iris was the down-to-earth sister.

As for Liv's questions (very good ones by the way), I'd say Alex definitely embodies the blind assassin, falling in love with Iris (who's clearly compared to the sacrificial virgins, dressed as "society brides") despite his initial opposition to the world she represented.

Ok, so I'm a few months late - but I just finished this last night. Totally unimpressed. I don't know if it was just not my style, or what, but I didn't care if I finished it or not. Meh.
