So, I went to see Belle & Sebastian last night in Toronto (body crush! blech!) and was quite blown away by them. I've really only been listening for a couple of years and never got a chance to see them before, but I was impressed! And, dammit, that whole twee sound is so danceable! I have decided that Belle & Sebastian are really just mod Mods - sweet Northern Soul with a healthy dose of self doubt to temper it. Aisler Set opened and if they could have been heard (hade their amps turned up by the soundman) they would have sounded lovely! Who else is with me? Or are B&S hopelessly fey for your taste? Come on! I am not the only one who likes this kind of thing, am?! Janest, Kikinoir? Bueller? IP: Logged |

Oh, OK I admit it. I like Belle and Sebastian, too. Tigermilk is the only album that I keep going back to, though. They're coming to DC Wed. and I didn't really want to see them. I didn't think they'd be that good live. But your glowing review made me rethink my plans. I think I listen and then get creeped out by the twee a little, then go back, and so on and so on and so on. But they always make me smile. IP: Logged |

I have been listening to the Gentle Waves a lot lately. Isobel's not as brooding when Stuart's not in the driver's seat, and I love the minuet-y/harpsichord-y sound on "Falling From Grace" especially. In general, I think the twee gets a bit circular. Lots of overlaps and similarities among them, and sometimes the vocals are unbearable, and there are too many photographs of sensitive, sleepyheaded boys and girls. Sometimes I like a wider range of chords and high production quality and people who sing about happy stuff.

Pompier, if you're looking for happy, I highly recommend The Apples In Stereo. I think their lead singer may be the happiest person on earth! Their album Discovery of a World Inside the Moon is one of my fave albums. Super Furry Animals' Guerrila album is right up there in the happy music category in my house. DClassie, you really should check them out if the ticket price is within your budget. I was quite surprised at how good and engaging they were. Very charming, very accomplished, and you'd think that the set would be a bit of a downer but it was rather rousing as it built up to some of the newer soul inspired stuff. IP: Logged |

I'll second the Apples in Stereo suggestion and also add that Of Montreal is a FANTABULOUS band that's worth checking out if you like The Apples and/or Belle and Sebastian. And of course there's always the Magnetic Fields. IP: Logged |

I'd also recommend The Essex Green and Beachwood Sparks (both are much more E6-y than B&S's Brit style) - very yummy happy sweet stuff. IP: Logged |

I love the Apples in Stereo. Of course, there's a good reason why they're happy all the time. ![]() It's too bad, but I've already committed to a fundraiser that night (our local Planned Parenthood) because I forgot. Maybe next time they decide to scoot over here. Does anyone remember Rocketship? What happened there? IP: Logged |

I didn't go see Belle and the boy Sebastian last Friday because I didn't want to run into my ex girlfriend and her wife. (Oh me and my taste for lesbians!) I love them though. B & S, that is. The most twee thing I like is early Kahimi Karie. Oh, and Momus when he isn't creepy. IP: Logged |

I love B&S when Isobel isn't singing and I put a pox on anything Gentle Waves. I have a big-time problem with girl tweeness. I can't really put my finger on why, but surey it has something to do with falling into gender roles. And irony. Two of my least favorite things. Of the things mentioned, I'm quite fond of both Magnetic Fields and Beachwood Sparks. The B&S show in NYC kicked my butt, but then again, my pal Is (who by all accounts is a nice girl, I will freely admit) didn't sing much. As much as I fawn over surly man-rock in the mode of The Deadly Snakes, Danko Jones and The Gentlemen, very little has completely blown me away the way Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister have. Other things labeled Twee I steer clear of. Stuart Murdoch is an f-ing genius. I fear the others are just clever, which is surely not what I look for in my music. I do a mean (in every sense) impersonation of Kahimi Karie singing her Harmony Korine song, foisted upon me during an otherwise enjoyable Momus set. She is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in person, but heavens, I just wanted her to stop. Surely Kiki's really looking forward to that CD I've made him now! IP: Logged |

Apples in Stereo are great, and Belle and Sebastian are pretty good too. If we are throwing in suggestions, I'll toss Beulah in. Nice independant pop, you've gotta love it. IP: Logged |
