I'm hoping someone here has experience or advice with this sort of thing. Boy's ex roommate (an evil horrible person) still owes him his security deposit. We decided to file a small claims lawsuit against her figuring that's the only way she'd part with the money. Problem is she has since moved and her number is unlisted. How can I find her? Is there a way to file the suit without knowing her address and number?

Thanks.

there are services online that you can pay to find someone--I don't know what they cost or what info they need to get started.

there's probably also a way to sue someone by publishing the information if you really can't find them--this exists in many jurisdictions. check with the court where you want to file the suit, they should be able to tell you in what circumstances it's allowed (i.e., you might have to detail what steps you've taken to try to locate her) and what you have to do.

what does your bf know about her? cc numbers, bank statements, parent's addresses, social security number etc. All of these things can be useful if you have a few hours to kick around on the internet {or a few bucks to drop on an investigator} Alternatively, if you know the state/town, a simple, free Yahoo people search may turn the wayward roomie up!

Thanks everyone! Unfortunately he only has her name. He has been trying to get her parents number from his friend (evil ex roommate's ex boyfriend) but his friend now refuses to get involved. She's rumored to live very close to here but this being NYC, you can live on the same block as someone and never bump into them. We're definitely going to look into filing anyway and I'm going to check with the post office to see if she had registered a change of address and if they can give me the info.

Could you maybe look her up using an AOL buddy search? I found out the screen name of an old high school friend by searching her name - sometimes people have phone numbers and other contact information listed. If she's an aol member (not just aim) then her screen name is also her email.
