A question to the ex-smokers and never-smoked alike. If you were in the position to have a 'last request', ie: firing squad or something like that, would you choose to smoke a cigarette. This question came up this weekend and after thinking about it I think I'd say no. What about you? IP: Logged |

If I'm going to be shot immediately after, I'd rather just smoke a big fatty and go out happy!

Smoked for 15 years, averaged about 25 cigs/day. Quit six weeks ago. Miss it terribly, dream about it most nights, have even weeped a few times, BUT... I recognize that smoking is ethically wrong and was ashamed of myself every time I lit up for most of the years I smoked. Smoking is polluting. When you smoke a cigarette you are literally helping to KILL everyone around you and are contributing to the gradual poisoning of the entire planet. When you smoke, you are paying the salaries and pensions of criminals, of people who have worked for tobacco companies and knew for decades that smoking was poison before they actually let the public in on the news. When you smoke, you are throwing away money that could be used on your children's educations. People who try to rationalize smoking are full of shit. Sure, it's your body, but we're not talking about body-piercing or anal sex or birth control or flagellation or anything else considered deviant that doesn't actually effect other lives. Anyone who says they choose to smoke can bite me. I smoked b/c I was addicted and I'm pretty sure I'll miss the sensation of it every day for the rest of my life, which is why I took so long to quit. I started when I was 12 yo, a child who didn't yet have a firm enough concept of the outside world. Still, I will not try to make myself feel better by lying to myself in the way that anyone who defends smoking lies. Mind you, I won't say any of this to people who smoke unless asked b/c I know a person can rarely quit w/o being able to spot the truth on their own. But if you are taking the time to read this and you want to quit, my best advice is to obsess over just how ethically wrong smoking is until you really have no other choice but to quit. **And, truth is, I hope more than just about anything that I'll have time to smoke one more cigarette on my deathbed! Yay our goverment has finally made march 29th the day when the ban on smoking in the workplace becomes illegal. Sooo places like pubs will be no smoking yay yay yay. I think the only places where people will be allowed light up are in prison, hotels and certain b & b's . The vinters association are still debating wheter or not they will enforce the ban. If they dont it means a 3 grand fine and or prison if someone is caught lighting up on the premises. yay! IP: Logged |

Congrats, WishIWereBarefoot, six weeks is well over the physical addiction and so no you just need to get over the brainwashing. Remember the tobacco companies spent billions on advertising telling us how enjoyable inhaling burning leaves and paper into our lungs. Your post is full of the ironies and contradictions of smoking.
If you had been injecting your chosen drug would you miss the sensation of the cool liquid oozing through your vein? If snuff or chewing tobacco was the way to ingest nicotine would you miss the sensation of the tiny particles going up your nose.
At least your deathbed will be a longer time coming now and might not be preceded by bouts of emphysema and asthma. As for the dreams, we all get them. I wake up from a smoking dream in a panic that I have smoked a cigarette but am then relieved that it was a dream. It is your subconscience trying it on, don't fall for that one. WishIWereBarefoot, remember, you didn't give anything up. You reclaimed control over your body and purse. IP: Logged |

quote: That is wonderful Fluff, at least the pubs here have high ceilings and are large and airy. If you wear a cream jumper (aran of course) to a pub in Dublin you go home with a yellow one. IP: Logged |

quote: I know I can't wait for march 29th. Al said he is going to try and quit when march 29th rolls round. Hes mainly a social smoker so hopefully this time it will work. Most of the opposition seems to be coming from the older crowd who say smoking is part of pub culture and they are going to defy the rule. The vinters say they will lose money because more people will drink at home instead of going out and spending their cash which is why they are opposing it. I disagree thoughpeopl go out to bars to be sociable and meet other people. While some of the older crowd may sulk and drink at home for a while I reckon they'll probably come around to the no smoking thing Fingers crossed! IP: Logged |
