Just a comment on the Alaska thing--I live in Anchorage, and our gas never got above $2.00. It generally runs higher than the lower 48, because we don't have any refineries. But you don't see those ultra high gas prices until you're out in the villages.

Here's something that helps me keep perspective on saving money/simplifying life/etc: many times, if you do what's right for the environment, it's also right for your wallet...and frequently right for your health.

For example, washing & reusing plastic bags, walking to work or carpooling, etc. Some are more extreme than others, but it all helps, right?

I find that is a helpful way of looking at it when people joke about me being cheap.

Here in the Motor City - we have virtually no public transportation. There is the people mover (currently down for some reason) that only has about 12 stops, in the city. It doesn't help for those who are in the suburbs at all. I hear that there is a bus, again, don't think it goes to the burbs.

So I'm stuck driving. But I drive a fairly well fuel efficient car & flat out refuse to drive a suv unless it's a hybrid (currently a point of argument with Hubby since he thinks if a hybrid breaks it would be super costly).
I reuse a lot of stuff, try to hit the farmers market whenever posssible (cheap & tastey!), try not to buy clothes too often (although I just bought some tops and a pair of pants for work - and new shoes).
Even though we now have two salaries, I still think of it as just having one, mine, the smaller of the two. So I'm fairly cheap.

I realized, this morning, that I spend way too much on my daily half moon cookie and Mountain Dew. I go to the local bakery so frequently, that by the time I get up to the register, whoever is working there (and I know there are at least 5 different employees throughout each week), has my order ready.
Doing the math: $2 a day x 4 days/week x 50 week/year = a lot of moola.
So - I went and got a package of pop tarts (generic, value pack) for $2 and some of my favorite tea, which I will attempt to make faithfully every morning.
So they don't lose me as a customer, I think I'll start to buy my bread and rolls from them.

I'm not sure this is the right place for this , but I'm really annoyed. I've been posting to Freecycle a lot lately, and they have a spinoff for people with stuff to sell, not give away. I sold a flute recently (also had it posted on Craigslist) and the woman who bought it bought it for $30. (I had no takers for $50, and I knew it was probably worth more but didn't want to get it overhauled and was ok w/the $30).

She's now selling it for $200 on the same site, and using --get this--- verbatim parts of my original ad! Something about this really pisses me off. I mean, good for her if she's smart enough to get 200 for it, and i was a fool for selling it so cheaply, but it's just in such bad TASTE. And she's lying; it wasn't HER cousin's, it was mine! Ugh.

I know somthing else she could do with that flute...

I am so excited about the fact that we won't be just skating by anymore. Planning on splitting my direct deposit between savings and checking so that I never even see the money that goes into savings, until I'm ready to spend it on a house project, trip, or whatever, that is. Direct depositing into savings was always my best bet on saving money. Otherwise I was too tempted to spend it on something.

There's been a lot of stink about similar things happening on Cr@ig's and Freecycle here in Chicago. I have seen people post things on Craigs with quotes of the original person's listing and then their personal commment. (like when some knows that it's an Ikea $20 table they are asking $80 for, to protect the naive readers). That kind of thing. I don't see the posts getting deleted that are speaking the truth about the item. I think it's worth a try. Just use "Re:___(original listing title" so you get the attention of the same people.

People can be so conniving. ARGH

You might also alert the moderator on Freecycle.

I emailed the two moderators, just saying that I was annoyed that she'd used parts of my original ad, and found it in poor taste to be reselling it on the same list. Other than that, there's not much I can do. She's probably not selling it for an unreasonable price, it's just that I asked for a low price to get rid of it. She might have had it appraised or something. Thanks for the support, digsters. Blah. I"m trying to focus on the $30 this flute made me, rather than focusing on the $170 profit it might make her. After all, it wasn't making me any money at all sitting in my dad's basement.

Me too...I didn't have a savings account until recently, when I got some profit sharing back from my old job - I spent some on my car, bought myself a bike and a bathingsuit (2 things I most needed/wanted, besides, um, brakes and a brakelight and other much-needed car work I'd been putting off for months) and put the rest right into savings, where I've been having a little $$ a week transferred straight in from my checking. I always try and delude myself if I have any significant amount of $$ in my checking that I can hold onto it in there, but I so can't. I'll just allow myself to spend just a liiiittle bit extra at the grocery store or a liiiiittle bit extra at the T@rget...and then it's gone. So much better for it to just go into my ING. I don't notice the little bit going out each week, and I can get it out if I need it, but it's a hassle - not like my checking, which is attached to my debit card, which I can pay with, like, EVERYWHERE.

Also, I would like a pat on the back and a "good girl" for putting some extra $$ that boy recently paid me back straight into my savings as well, before I had a chance to think about it too much and go blow it on crap I'm going to have to put in storage in 2 months anyway.

I just clicked on a banner here at Digs last year when I signed up, so I have no idea if that link is any good. However, on P'cone's website, they specifically state that their members are not supposed to talk about it anywhere online, and if you try and go to it without signing in, it doesn't work because they're looking for specific demographics.

My best money saving tip is DON'T SHOP. Honestly, I think the majority of people have too much stuff, and going into stores is just too tempting! I have SO MUCH underwear that I made a vow a couple of years ago to not buy any more until I have a respectable number of pairs. I slipped once or twice and bought a few pairs since then, but I still have over 40- FORTY- pairs of underwear. As far as cosmetics and toiletries, there are the occasional every-day things we need, like deodorant and shaving cream, but I have enough peppermint masks, green tea toner, lemongrass foot gel, etc. etc. etc. to last a long time. I barely even use that stuff, so why buy more stuff to clutter up my bathroom closet?

That said, it helps to shop often. What a stupid paradox. On my way home from teaching I very often stop at the CVS to see their deals. I really needed some picture frames, so I've been stocking up when CVS has their 2-for-1 sales. I know I just said I have too much stuff, but when Z's hair gel went on sale for 99 cents, I bought three containers of it. Perhaps a better solution to this problem would be to get the circulars and see the deals, which will allow you to see if there's a spectacular sale you can't afford to miss, without actually putting you in the store, vulnerable to buying a bunch of crap you don't need.

So buy in bulk conservatively, and only if it won't go bad, and only if you have the storage space, and ONLY if you are positive you need it now or will need it in the immediate future.

My other big tip? Any time you are less than satisfied, complain! You are the almighty customer and you are spending your hard earned money, and if you are not happy, you deserve a coupon, a little bonus, or even a refund. When I worked in retail, we had a VERY lax return policy, so people could bring in things they had already washed, or if they had lost the box, or even if the item was months old, they could still return/exchange. It never hurts to ask. Just keep in mind that your time is money too, and if you are going to have to call eleven different customer service numbers and wait on hold for 2 hours, it's probably not worth it for a 50-cent coupon.

Amen to the circular-reading and list-making! I am such a list shopper. If I see something I think I need that isn't on my list, it prompts me to go, "Now wait. Is this something I really need? Am I really going to use it? Why wasn't it on my list in the first place?" I often still end up with 2 items or so that weren't on my list, but I force myself to justfify the crap out of purchasing them.

My best money-saving tip, which I am currently trying to get myself to follow, is to NOT justify buying several small-dollar items b/c they're only a dollar or 2. I cringe at the thought of spending $30 or $40 - even $20 - on one item, but I will spend more than that in one shopping trip on several little items that I don't really need, because they were cheap. I caught myself doing it at the grocery store the other night - every time I picked up something I wasn't specifically there for, I gave myself a litte mental hand-slap and a loud mental "NO! BAD bekkaboo, BAD!!!"

I'm trying to save money, really I am. Here's what I'm doing:

- budget each week in Excel (as I get paid monthly)
- pay extra off my car loan
- take lunch to work
- make my own muesli and *eat* it
- eat $4 curry for dinner if I have to eat out (which I do very regularly, sadly)
- shop when I need to cook, as I go 10 days at a time without eating at home
- get a housemate in (even if I want to bump said HM off right now)
- drive more carefully in city traffic
- put all coinage in a box and bank it when full
- make my own soap, lotions, scrubs and stuff and

- give my time or handmade goodies as gifts.

What are the best credit cards for offering rewards? I know CitiBank gives you back $$ and somewhere else gives free Sony stuff ...

Thought this table was very interesting.

I think it's funny that I shoot to spend $250/month for the two of us, and feel guilty when I spend $300, but $300 puts us barely out of the Thrifty category. Of course, we spend ~$100 a month on dining out, too, so if you add that we just into the low-cost range..

I always have a bottle of water in my bag anyway, so I only buy popcorn. It really is extortionate to charge so much for soft drinks.

You're not allowed to bring your own food to the movies here (Canada), but I do anyway. They don't search your bags or anything.

When I go to the movies, I usually try to see a matinee, which costs less. I always have a bottle of water on me (I live in the desert), and for budget and diet reasons, I try to avoid snacks at all in the movie theater. It's a total ripoff to buy them there, and if I bring my own it's usually junk, so I just avoid it.

For groceries, I usually spend about $120-150 per month, just for myself. I rely a lot on convenience foods, which done right, keeps meal costs really low. Micro-meals (the popular diet ones) cost about $2 each, and that's all I usually have for lunch. I buy a week's worth and put them in the freezer at work. Luckily, I work in a very small office so I know they won't disappear on me.

It is a rare, rare thing for me to buy drinks/snacks from the theater. You're not supposed to take them in here either (since that's where thr theaters make their money, the tickets sales go to the movie folks until after a certain amount of time has passed... can't remember how much), but the prices are ridiculous and always have been. My parents refused to buy us movie treats, and my mom taught us all the tricks of sneaking food in (just through example). I have taken entire meals for 2 into the theater on numerous occasions. It helps that I really don't like movie popcorn either I guess (too much crap on them, I like popcorn plain or lightly salted an buttered).

The local movie theater here is in a strip mall which also contains a $1 store. Usually we try to get there a few minutes early and run into the $1 store for candy, beverages, etc.

If we don't, we always split a soda.

If I forget my bottle of water, I ask them for a cup of ice/water (some places only give you ice) and fill it up at the water fountain. I usually try to eat before I hit the theater, though; I eat all the candy before the previews are over, so what's the point?
