This is pretty random, but I've found myself thinking about cool names lately. I'm not pregant, or anywhere near that sort of situation, but all the same I've been thinking of Amelia, Emma, Jack, Molly.
It's wacky, but anybody else?

I always think of dog names....my last two choices were Sophie or Wes. Wes won out because the cutest (even still) dog at the humane society was a boy.

Heh ... Ginsu and I play this game all the time (not that we're anywhere near the thinking about kids stage). It's always a big debate whether to go conventional or untraditional ... both Ginsu and I have pretty unusual names and are happy with our names, but it is kind of a pain when you're meeting people at a party and it's time for introductions ... "Hi, I'm Yee-Fan" "What was that again?" "Yeeeee. Faaaannn" "Oh, Yvonne?" "No, Yee-FAN." At this point they generally give up and just smile and nod as if they've understood.

So, names I like, ranging from the pretty normal to the completely made-up:

Girls: Emma, Sabrina, Mia, Natasha, Zoe, Sonora, Pandora
Boys: Spencer, Finnegan (esp. the nickname Finn), Xander (just as a name; not a big fan of the name Alexander)

i love the names emma and elizabeth! for a boy, i like andrew and craig... and i recently noticed that i tend not to like people whos named end in an "i". i like tracy, i dont like tracy. kimmi? ugh. vicki? dont even get me started... and my side story: even though my boyfriend and i are nowhere close to having childen, i shudder to think of the day it will happen: his favorite names for a girl are AMBER and TIFFANY! no offense to anyone named that, but i think those are horrid, vile 80's names. also, do you find it interesting that tiffany amber theisson played KELLY (my name) on saved by the bell?

I'm a big ol' hippy, so when it comes to names, I'd love to name my kids Rainbow, Forest, Sunshine, etc. I also love the names Violet and Daisy. I don't know about boys names besides Forest...I think Oliver is my favorite. I've also been playing with Spanish and starting to love some Basque names like Aranxa (AranCHa)--isn't that neat? Who doesn't want an X in their name?
In Judaism, you're supposed to name kids after an ancestor or at least someone who has died, so that's going to be important.

My brother was in school with a girl with the coolest name ever: Sunrise Hart.

Whee! This topic is fun. Shaps and I aren't close to having kids, but we talk... The rundown?

I like old fashioned names for girls:
Ellie
Norah
Cecilia
Sophia
Natalie

For Boys:
Cole
Jarrod
Samuel

Shaps, who is obsessed with jiu jitsu, swears that he is going to name his first son "Royce" (the R is pronounced like an H, so it sounds like "hoyce") after the greatest jiu jitsu guy ever. I told him there's no chance I'll be mothering the kid named "Royce". It sounds a cat hawking up something. You might as well name the kid "Hairball"!

On a side note, I just realized that you don't know who "Shaps" is. I use this shortened version of Justin's (you housemates know who he is!) last name pretty often. He's got a good Jewish name, but he's a bad Jewish boy!

I love Daisy and those old-fashioned sounding names.
Someone had me look at their baby pictures online. The hospital posted pictures of all the new births (Yes, I think there's some privacy issues there.) I played a little game with myself, guess if it was a boy or a girl. I got it wrong about 50%. Bailey went both ways. My favorite was first name George, second name Lucas.
HA!

I have a few favorite girl names:
Sophia (not Sophie!)
Isabel
Magdalena
Blossem (after my great grandmother, spelling and all.)
Come to mention it, I really like the name Daisy too. Except when I think of Daisy Duke and her famous wardrobe.

Boy names?
I haven't gotten that far. I do adore the name Xander, but that's my boyfriend's real name so it's not a big suprise.
I love the name Sam- my brother and my great grandfather's name.
I suppose if i had a boy baby I would name it after a family member- my family has some great names in it. My favorite is Lon. He was called Lonnie until he was 45 though.

not that I am thinking of having children any time soon. Just something in the back of the mind...

Names I've always liked for girls include:
Rowena
Leigh
Emilie
Eleanor
Coralyn

boys:
John or Jack
Richard

I haven't been able to come up with any good names for a boy cat, though. Criteria may be too strict. 2 syllables, ends in sound "ee" and my current cat is named Buddy. (I'm thinking about getting him a friend, or as one of smart-alec friends put it..."a buddy for Buddy") Anyone have any ideas.

Let me start by saying I AM FEELING THE LOVE. Tee hee...

Names I like: Elijah, Sam, Jack, Luke, Lucia, Madeleine, Caitlin, Sarah, Ian. When we have a boy he'll be named Elijah Samuel (Sam is my grandpa; Elijah's just beautiful) and I would love to have a girl named Lucia Caitlin (Lucia is my aunt, who's just an amazing woman, and Caitlin-- again, just beautiful).

I've always wanted a dog named Scout. And, Yee-Fan, my hamster's name is Finn!

Yup, no kids anytime soon, but I do have at least one definite name picked out- I want a daughter named Kirsten Grace. Kirsten is my mother's name- she is full Norwegian- and I want to name my daughter after her because she's overcome amazing obstacles and yet is one of the softest, most loving people I know. Grace because my mom and dad gave my sister and I middle names of traditional virtues- my sister's is hope, and mine is faith (hence Amanda Faith). I think it's lovely and I want to keep the tradition.

My brother's middle name- and don't laugh at this- is Gurney. It was my grandmother's maiden name, and the family name ended in her generation- so she gave it to my dad for his middle name, and each successive male is supposed to give it to his first-born son, as a way to keep the name going. Judging by how my people have reacted to my brother's middle name his whole life, however, I'm not sure how long that tradition will last!

Also, speaking of odd names, my father wanted to name my older sister Trillium, after the flower. I have a theory that during any given pregnancy, *one* of the parents has to get this wierd hormonal urge to name their child something bizzare, which their partner must in turn squelch. I should apply for a grant to research this. . .

Trillium's not too bad ... Ginsu knows a couple, both microbiologists, who actually inflicted "Escherichia" on one of their children as a middle name. How would you like to be named after a type of bacteria?

Ooh, Norah and Elijah are great names.

My favourites for girls are:
Penelope (just for the nickname Penny), Azami (it's a japanese name that means thistle),
Alberta (I love this name, but I'll never get to name a child Alberta. sigh.),
Joanna
Aurora
Emily
Bramble
Leanne
Cassandra
MacKenzie
Siobhan
Tove
Zoe

For boys:
Alan
Perry (but not for my kids - it's my dad's name)
Toby (but I've used it up on my cat)
Gordon
Fritz
Zeb

My fave monikers:

For boys--Benjamin, Joshua, Riley, Noah
For girls--Lucy, Annie, Renata, Madeline; Elena, Meg (although this totally contradicts a personal principle: I don't think people's "certificate names" should be nicknames, which means "Meg" should be Meghan, Megan or Margaret. But I knew a perfectly horrid person named Meghan, Megan (Mee-gan) just doesn't appeal to me and I like the nickname "Maggie" enough that I would have another daughter named Margaret to have a Meg and a Maggie ... oh, the dilemmas).

For puppies--Sugar, but the nickname would be Shug; Maxwell House (b/c I think it's funny to say Maxwell, not in the House!)

For fish--Mrs. Paul, Gordon, Charlie and Pepperridge Farm

eek--I missed this thread, and of all people that it pertains to...

we don't know as of today whether or not it's a boy or a girl--but we have an ultrasound tomorrow.

So here's the short list so far--

If one of the chromosomes happens to be Y:
Connor
Bennett
Xavier
Joshua
Luke/Lucas

If chromosomes are both X:
Hannah
Samantha (but I can't get away from the 80's Samatha Fox imagery. ewww...)
Alexia
Drew
Jordan
Taylor

BUT our favorite name and the one that seems to fit for both a boy and a girl is Quincy/Quinn. The meaning is "the fifth/fifth son's estate," which really bears no significance to us except for the fact that we both come from families of five, but we were watching "Love & Basketball," and that was the name of the male lead, and Jello (my hubby) really liked it. He just likes to call the kid Q (a little too James Bond--but he likes it).

SB, don't mean to ruin anything for you....but one of my most embarrassing moments involved me, a club on the Champs Elysee called "Monte Cristo" and a Spanish transvestite named Xavier. No escaping the Shame.

I'll borrow a verse from the Book of Cosby: I'll name my male children Jesuschrist and Lookdammit. As in, "Jesuschrist, if I have to tell you one more time..." and "Lookdammit, I'm taking off my belt..."

Hmmm...female children. That's a tough one. How about "My Dad's a Mean Mofo" and "Poppa's Got a Shotgun"?

Seriously, for boys I like the Biblical route. Matthew, Mark, Gabriel, Michael, Hezekiah, Macabbees (just kidding on those last two, or am I?). Some that I picked up in Ireland that I like are Finn (that's actually not short for anything, that's the whole name) and Dermot. For girls I like Meadhbh (maeve), Rose, Magdalena (a beautiful name in its own right, and then there's the Dylan song "Durango" on top of that!), and Rachel (NOT NOT NOT because of that ditzy trollop on the TV!).

SB--

I love Quincy, too... but b/c its my dog's name. But he's a beautiful, wonderfully loyal, gentle animal! He's been the best family pet for 12 years now (yes, we are preparing to not have him around for too much longer ... something that is really hard to think about) ... and I would totally love to name a child that ... I think it is such a fun name ... and I too love James Bond (maybe spygirl gives that away ...) and would definitely call a kid "Q"

However, I wonder if I can name my proginy(sp?) Quincy ... I just imagine my father, a huge Indiana Jones fan, continually telling the poor tyke, "We named the dog Quincy!"

Smallbladder-

I liked all the names you suggested...the woman I used to work for has two kids:
Hannah & Bennett. Just thought that was funny since they were both on your lists. I happen to know that her parents (offically the grandparents) had a dog named Hannah when the kid was born. How funny is that?

I think Hannah is about the most popular name for girls right now. Just be careful & don't make it the Jennifer of this generation! (apologies to all the Jennifers out there!) There are sooo many. Lots of Dave's too. I have sworn off dating any more Daves. It's not that they are bad guys, I just can't date any more of them.

We haven't discussed names we wouldn't use ... for me, it's any ex-boyfriend/former hook-ups names:

Sadly for me that eliminates Eric (one of my old faves) and Sean (another fame).

Boy's names I love but neglected to mention and was reminded about thanks to the Harry Potter mention: Harry, of course, Seamus and Cedric

briezee - I had a big, fat, long-haired cat that I absolutely adored named KC (or Casey) for Kitty Cat. He was so fat he couldn't, umm, groom himself properly and I had to bathe him frequently. He would lie on my chest, purr, knead, and drool just as happily as a creature could. May he rest in peace.

I love family last names used as middle names in order to keep them running. I think that's really cool.

I do have a problem with faddish names (like Caitlin) where the poor kid will have 7 of them in her class growing up.

I like strong, historic names. My son's name is Andrew Philip.

Boys: Simon, Gabriel, Luke

my fiance and i talk about names a lot. one of us will come home from work or something and out of the blue will say 'how about calliope?' or somethign like that. its kind of funny since we dont plan on having kids within the next five years or so. plus my sister-in-law is due in may and they just decided on a name (and they asked for my help because they have zero creativity) so ive been doing a lot of research on it anyway. the list is ridiculously long at this point. and my new nephews name will be alexander jorgensen (middle name, which was my nana's maiden name, who just died recently)

someone said something about one mate getting hormonally whacko and wanting to name their child something out there. my mother gave birth to me and i didnt have a name for a couple of hours. she almost named me 'tuesday' but my dad wouldnt let her. and i so wish she did. =)

girls: hannah is my first choice but its driving me bananas how popular its become. and whatever the first name, Love will be her middle name, which ive wanted for over ten years now (WAY before jennifer love hewitt). anyway. a lot of mine are named after characters i really liked or somethng similar...so the girl faves are: charlotte, eve, talia, scout, amelia, sophie, pepper, willow, pippa, petal, finn, savannah, calliope. and why is it so much easier to find cute girl names than boys? anyway...boy choices: oliver, sage, max, jesse, gabriel, simon, luke (although oliver is our only option really)

good luck to you, smallbladder!!

Okay I'm young and probably won't be married for 10 years much less having kids and yet I have a list of names I like.

Girls:
Juliet --Romeo and Juliet is my favorite book but I'd hate for her to swear she was doomed in love ya know
Sabrina
Samantha--same as my aunt's dog, oh well
Mikayla--or some spelling of the sort
Franscesca
Savanna--even though it sounds very southern bell
Scarlet--southern again
Kelila--Prounounced Ka-lee-lah
Ariel
Calandra
Helena--prounounced ha-lay-na, unlike the city which is pronounced helen-a. No middle name works with it though
Laine
Leigh

Boys:
Christopher
Orion
Marshall--family name
Mark
Colin
Nathan
Cameron
Kieran
Sebastian

And I will collect many more over the years I'm sure

I've seen a few people putting Sabrina and Samantha on their lists. I really like both of those names. (My first name is Sabrina, although I go by Brie which I like better.)

What is strange though is that from the time that I was little until even now, if I introduce myself as Sabrina (which I only do in formal situations), a good majority of the people call me Samantha. I've never figured out how they got that. Now when I introduce myself as Brie, some people still think my name is Samantha. (And that is just plain weird.) One of my grandmothers called me Samantha for over 20 years until I sent her a college grad announcement and she saw my full name written out. (Samantha was not even considered by my parents. 2nd choice was Penelope. (Penelope is cute, but I don't think it fits me. Samantha might fit my personality.))

I have a great-grandfather named Park Pheonix. Our last name is Householder (really), so I guess two cool names balance out the crazy last one. My great-grandmother's name was Augusta, which I've always thought was such a neat name.

Boys: Christopher, Noah
Girls: Madison, Hannah (I'm really bummed that this is getting so popular!), Lillian, Rhiannon

Just make sure that you don't give the same middle name (spelled exactly the same) to two children, as my parents did. It was a little strange for me and my sis. Not therapy strange, just strange.
