quote: Whew. Good thing I read everyone elses responses before I wrote mine. Having just gotten done defending the Holy Mother Church on the "so mad I could spit" thread, I was all too ready to put on my Uncle Sam outfit. So, I'll limit myself to this: Briddy, are you a lazy, greedy, slovenly, opportunist? Do you think the people on this board are? If you answered "no" to the above, then you can't possibly mean what you said above. We are a nation that contains those elements--but we really are so much more. If we weren't people wouldn't be rafting across shark infested waters or cramming themselves into cargo containers to reach us. IP: Logged |

quote: Crowjoy, I was just thinking about this, and I think I'm envious of the fact that even though you & Mander are both working on getting knocked up (um, excuse my casualness), you don't have to put up with relatives making sex jokes with you! Like, "You guys better get in the bedroom and get to practicing!" My husband slipped out that we MIGHT be getting closer to the parenthood thing SOMETIME in the future. So of course word spread like wildfire, and now we're being subjected to great uncles making jokes about how we need to get it on ***wink, wink, nudge, nudge*** I don't want my sex life to be a family topic of discussion, sorry. Never ever thought of it before, but yours & Mander's method seems to have some perks in that way! IP: Logged |

Definitely that! On the other hand, they all want to know allll about the process. Who ever thought anyone would be so interested in my ovulation cycle. Also, everyone assumes we'll have a litter because they think insemination equals fertility drugs. While she is never going to get me pregnant without intervention, so far neither of us show any signs of fertility problems, duh. When I was married we got those nudges all the time... "hints" about how happy grandchildren would make the parents, etc. My tactic has always been to provide WAY too much information... people will usually cut you off and never ask again. So maybe if they make a comment about practicing you can eyeball the table and say, that looks pretty sturdy, would y'all mind excusing us? Or tell them some detail about your last practice session. Ha! That will put a stop to it! Either way, reproduction seems to be license for people to ask stupid and rude questions. First stranger that touches my belly is getting bitch slapped. Oh and since we're talking about it (hahaha, volunteering info to strangers is ok) today is our first try! The eggs are dropping! The eggs are dropping! IP: Logged |

This new guy I'm dating is one of six boys whose names are Ed, Steve, Bob, Bill, Tom, and Brian. Those are about as uninspired as they come. The baby, Brian, got the fanciest name, and the only one that isn't shortened into something else. (Edward = Ed, William = Bill, etc.) IP: Logged |

First: Good luck crowjoy! Now: I've already broached this topic on another thread, but I have a unique (well, until 1997) name, and it is no picnic. I can't tell you how many times I get called Brenda. People screw up my name, and when I correct them (if I bother) half the time they keep saying it however they want to. There are a hundred different ways to do it, Breana, Briana, Brianna, Breanne, Brianne, etc. It's a pretty name, I really love it, but what a pain. Bree-ah-nah. Not that you'll be calling me on the phone, but still... I have always kept a list of baby names. I don't particularly want kids, but I know I'll have three boys. Is that weird? I just know. I don't know how. I like good strong names, like Jack, and musical names, like Bilal. I never look for girls names, as I'll never have any. Maybe I can live vicariously through you!!! IP: Logged |

I have always like the name Laurel for a girl, so if I have a daughter that is most likely what I will name her. For the boys names I have no idea! I did attend have a friend growing up who name was Sihaya that I thought was nice and her sisters names were kinsa, and tayla. All very original. IP: Logged |

quote: Well, they have different last names....My brother recently took an email address using my uncle's last name (he's on an irish kick) but i called and was like "um, that's not your name!" freak. He could at least use his middle name (our maternal grandmother's maiden name) instead of my mom's maiden name! So he changed it. *That* would have caused confusion. IP: Logged |

I'm all for aesthetics and considering the playground factor in deciding names. The meaning for me is not that important because most people don't bother to look them up when they meet someone new and I would hate to label my kid and later be disappointed (my sister's name means "cheerful one" but she's about as moody as they come), as long as the name is not directly associated with something negative (directly related to the playground factor in many cases). My parents have the most boring names in the world (Michael and Cathy) so they gave the three of us unusual names that couldn't be shortened. My sister has continued the tradition but to the nth power and recently named her son Boaz. As in Bozo the clown? Despite her resistance, everyone is calling him Bo which sounds kinda Dukes of Hazard for my tastes. I like having an uncommon name and would like give one to my child someday, but I think the vowels are the key to preventing your kids from having to give a phonics lesson to every new person they meet. I'll stick with the five "cardinal vowels" and won't have the same letter representing two sounds in the same name (my only problem wiht my name since 8th grade, when people generally got bored with calling me plain old Bra). For that reason I tend to like Spanish names such as Ines, Marlen, Pascal, Sofia for girls and Andres, Marcos, Domingo for boys. IP: Logged |

Another something to think about when naming your children: One of the ladies in my department is working on a project with an Italian man named Luca. His last name is Macoochie. No joke. (I'm sure that's not the right spelling, though). So with the heavy Italian accent, on her voice mail it sounds a lot like he's saying "Hi, this is Luca, Luc-a-my-coochie..." Sorry for the unlady-likeness of this post. IP: Logged |

I have an uncommon name TAMARA and I love it now... even though when I was younger it was a bit difficult and I shortened it "Tami" until I matured and felt better about my name. For me I want to give my kids an uncommon but not ridiculous name. I factor in ethinic backgrounds, family names, and it is important to choose names that will transcend childhood into adulthood. Peaches is cute when you are a little girl but doesn't get you far in corporate america. My family has had some different names to say the least and I feel for my nieces and nephews who have to spell and pronounce these "special" names: Faiifo (samoan), Xiomara (latin), Xenia (latin), Azariah (biblical) Osiris Being that I have married/divorced a couple times my choices have changed due to the surname/ethnicity of the fathers to be. Not particulary thinking about kids right now but these are a few of my favorite names: BOYS Now I am dating an Italian so my choices lean that way... I like Lucca, Gian & Gianlucca, Giovann, and Trajan. girls: I WILL NOT HAVE A GIRL! But I think these names are nice Adina, Madison, Pina, Hailey, Mina, Sophia I had a roommate legally named Sugar Brown! IP: Logged |

quote: Here's me being a nerd: The Romans may have co-opted it, but "Xenia" is an ancient Greek word. It is the holy code of hospitality, the convention which made the duties of a host towards his guest a sacred trust regulated and defended by Zeus himself. I did a brief paper on this topic for my Age of Homer course in college. IP: Logged |

Gosh, it's amazing to plant a seed and see it grow. So many good names! I think someone mentioned place names. I was thinking about names in my boyfriend's family. They like to keep names in the family, always giving someone a relatives first name. I think it's a bit confusing and uninspired. Then I thought about the names Irish-Americans give their kids which are Irish place names. I guess I was thinking of Shannon or Kerry, mainly. Then, I thought about naming kids for places that mean something in our relationship. So, we starte to joke. If we have twins, we'll name them Hamilton and Roscoe, after the area where we met. Or maybe Addison and Ashland for a boy and a girl. IP: Logged |

There should be more people named Roscoe. And they should all be sheriffs and have basset hounds for pets. And they should all make the sound, "G-g-g-g-g-g-g-g..." when they get really excited and and can't get their car in gear fast enough to chase down local touble makin' boys. All least that's what I think. IP: Logged |

Two of my favourite names are Nolan and Ryan (both names of influential people in my life but also just darned cool names.) Anyway, I would love to name my future son "Nolan Ryan (blank)" but Nolan Ryan also happens to be the name of a very famous baseball player, and really would not want my child to have to hear for the rest of his life "Wow, your mom must really like baseball." Oh well. IP: Logged |
