Congratulations, SB! So, have you picked a name yet, then?

Man, I am just thinking how great it would be if you saved that picture (complete with arrow and text) and put it in with his baby pictures. How would that be 20 or so years down the road? Can you imagine the embarrassment as his fiancee flips through the family photo album only to find
"PENIS ---->"
and mom leans over, pats her arm and says, "Oh, he wasn't even born yet. I changed his diapers and can tell you it's filled out just fine. I'll be willing to make you another sign, though if you need it, dear."

I'm going to have to write that down in my notebook of "stuff to add to scripts when I can't think of anything to progress the plot and am willing to settle for a cheap laugh."

Gawd, Yeef, I'm laughing so hard my neighbors downstairs must be feeling their cupboards shake.

Sad part is, that reminds me of real life. My brother-in-law took a photo of my nephew when he was just a few days old, on the scale. My B-I-L was standing at my nephews's feet taking a "full body shot." My nephew decides at that point to lift his leg so the photo is like "WHAM! TESTES!" right in your face. Of course, being absentminded scientist types, they e-mailed it to EVERYONE. It's still in the album with all his baby photos. When I opened it up, I called everyone at work over and said: "My sister's baby's a boy--and WHAT a boy!!!"

I just know that picture will come back to haunt him. My sister won't let me exert the proper influence over him, either. He'll be embarrassed by it. See, if I could help raise him from the age of 3 to the age of 8 then I could guarantee that when he's 16 and that photo comes out when his first girlfriend comes to dinner rather than wanting to crawl under a rock and die, the boy will have the strength of character to meet the shame head on and say, "Hey, if I was that hung when I was three days old, you can just imagine what I'm packing now."

Wouldn't THAT teach my sister and her husband for taking such an indelicate picture!

I saw that someone had listed 'Pippa' as one of their favourite girl's names... Warning: if you ever have a daughter and decide to name her Pippa, don't move to Sweden. 'Pippa' in Swedish means 'to f**k'. I just thought you'd like to know that :-)

I've totally fallen in love with the name Xinlei. Unfortunately I have no idea how to pronounce it, or if it means something. I also love Siska, which is the name of a Belgian friend of mine, and Eira, which is Finnish but also means 'snow' in Welsh. All are names for girls, so I'd better not have any boys...

You are a riot. Your kid is damn lucky to have a cool mama like you!

I read some of the journal stuff, and it's so sweet. *snif* (seriously, I'm about to cry just thinking about it, that whole miracle of life thing.)

within three minutes of my first pregnancy test, i was calling the baby "she" and "her". i became so convinced that i was going to have a girl that i didn't even THINK of boys names. so, of course, at my last ultrasound, my boyfriend goes "looks like a boy!" and i, (in my snottiest voice) say "we can't tell yet!" to which the nurse says, "WELL......." and freezes the frame of my little girls PENIS. ooops. i have four baby brothers, so i guess the whole "i know it's a girl" thing was just wishful thinking.
now i have no boy names picked out. thankfully, my sweetie changed his mind on what HIS idea of a good name was. his last name begins with an 'S' and originaly he wanted to name the child Andrew Steven. i refused, being that his initials would have been A.S.S.! as if elementry school isn't hard enough!

Haha..my mom's friends used to tease her before she married my dad that she was going to marry someone with an "S' last name & her intials would be ASS. Luckily she ended up with ASH. Her maiden name made it ASK. How funny.

Here's my thoughts:

Ione
Jade
Layla (I like the song, allright!)
Jasmine

I already know the middle name:
Blue

And I haven't thought of boys names because it's not a boy. I'm practically a feminazi, there's no way I could produce a boy!

Thank you for your time and input,

Penny,

I like Layla--the song and the name. I wouldn't go with "Jade Blue', however--too many colors. But I like all the other choices.

Personally, I really want to name my daughter Josephine. It's old fashioned, but I think it's a power name with just enough sex appeal. My dear grandmother's name was Mary, and I really like that one, too. So I'll need at least two daughters.

Good luck!

I like Jasmine or Ione.

My mother really wanted to name me Elizabeth, and I'm so glad my father changed her mind... it just wouldn't have suited me. Plus, my name is in a million songs... makes me feel special every time. Good Golly.

If I had been a boy, my father would have been gung-ho about naming me Wolf.

names for girls: Saffron (especially with the middle name "Jane" because she'd sound like a heroine from the wild west), Sabine, Simone, Maria, Ruth, Annie, Athena, Frances.

boys? Griffin, Simon. Just as long as it's not Dylan, Kyle, Chad, Cody, or Luke, I'm happy.

For a girl, I would have to go with Anna Clare. Anna was my great-great-grandmother, and Clare is my paternal grandmother's middle name. My mother would prefer that I name my first daughter Linnea, since it was my great grandmothers first name, my grandmothers middle name, my moms first name and my middle name, so it tradition, right? Its supposed to go to the first girl in each generation. Well, my sister broke it, her duaghter's name is Jessica Marie. Speaking of which, I would never put Marie as my kids middle name, its just way too common. I sometimes think people put that when they dont know what else to put.

For boys, I dont care for anything too trendy, and nothing with a Y in it, its just way too cute for me. I am leaning towards Jack, and I have a lot of middle names picked out - Henry or Norman after my grandfathers, or Alan after my dad.

Your name choices are VERY cute. I know a girl named Jasmine, and people call her "Jaz", which I love. Oh, yes, girl, you absolutely could have a boy. It happened to me. Twice. Start thinkin'. Also, a cautionary word: it's hard to name your first one, because usually you have limited exposure to other kids, so it is very easy to give them a common name. I'm happy to tell you your choices seem non-ordinary. My kids are named: Calvin and Edmund.

I like Jasmine too

You may want to avoid Ione - now perhaps I'm pronouncing it wrong, but when I was reading them aloud to myself, my first thought was:

Ione Blue - I own a blue...pickup truck.

Sorry, but true.

I think I'm pretty set on what I would name a child. All the names I have in mind are fairly common, except for one (female) name, which I'm keeping secret I do like Williams and Johns, though, Josephenes and Marys

And I too hate the middle names of Ann or Marie. I will forgive my parents becuase they stuck the Anne onto my first name (I'm actually GingerAnne) and gave me my grandmother's maiden name (Wright) for a middle.

I like the idea of having a last name for a middle name. It sounds sophisticated. I wanted to do that with my kids, but my husband wouldn't go for it. Why didn't I just do it when the nurse came 'round with the birth certificate?? I must have been weak. I can't believe I didn't use my own judgement. My kids would love to have that name as well.

As mentioned in the "Idiosyncracy of the Day" thread, I have this obsession of checking for my name (gretchen) on the racks of personalized crap at walmart, etc . .

Though it's never there, checking those racks out sure can help you with the trends of names . . . Dave and I had fun looking at the empty slots -- Cody, Dylan, Austin, Ashley . .. basically, if we have kids, we're checking out the empty slots for the names we WONT name our kids.

Although, if he could, I think hed name a kid "Scirocco" and I've never seen THAT on the racks.

Girl names
* Brianna
* Elena
* Tori (but that's my cat's name)

Boy names
* Gehan
* Harrison (Both family names)
* Shane

I made a death-bed to my grandfather that I would grow up to be a good woman like my mom and grandma and name a baby after him. But, not the first name because I always hated it.

So, any ideas for first names to go with Rex?

I just had a little girl 4 months ago and we named her Adylin Eve. It's tough picking out a name! I'm more picky about girls' names than boys'. I think if we have a boy next time, we'll name him Drew Isaiah. We're into Biblical middle names.

College friends of mine are expecting a child at the moment - I'm hoping it's a girl, because if it's a boy they're considering calling him Xenophon (ancient Greek historian, apparently). I've told them it sounds like something made by Pfizer but they won't listen.
In Hong Kong, kids get to choose their own English name at about 11 or so. There are quite a few Oral Bs and Chlorophylls running around here, it's very cute.

So this guy in my office just had a kid and he named her Eloise. All of the gossipers in my office hate the name but I think its kind of cute because it is distinctive. And, its a name that a lot of good nicknames could come out of. So, I ask you this...what are some of the names you think you would like to name your kids, when you get to that stage (if you aren't already there )

I like
Stephanie (Stephie)
Ty (my SO's name is Todd, he dad, Ted, his grandpa Theo - I think you can see the pattern)
Schuyler
Charlotte (Shaw for short)
Ben
Seaton

Oooohhh, I like this one!

I actually quite like the name Eloise, much for the reasons you mentioned.

Even I'm a good couple of years off having kids (gotta get that Masters thesis done well before I even start thinking about babies!), some friends and I were talking about this... I love names that you can shorten to nicknames, probably because it is almost impossible to shorten my name!

So, for boys, I love:
Jackson (Jack)
Elliot (although I think I'd be compelled to dress him in a red hooded sweatshirt and call him "Ellllll-eeee-ut" :-)
Raymond (Ray) - but it's my dad's name, so it didn't require a stroke of creative genius

For girls:
Lily
Jessica - I don't necessarily love this, but I do love Jessie
Josephine (Joey or Josie) - I also like Josefina

I'm sure when the time comes, I'll completely change my mind though!

I really want to give my babies "family" names. This is what I've got to work with:
Girls - Maya, Graciela, Nora, Joyce, Marion.
Boys - David, Lee, Carlos (no way).

I like Maya Graciela (Gracie or Ella for short) and Nora Jocelyn (Josie for short) for girls, and Joaquin David for a boy. Can Jack be a nickname for Joaquin? I think so. R's family is hispanic, so I'm pumping him for more exotic names.

I want a baby. Now.

I really like Camille, it's been one of my favorite names for a really long time, or Gabriel for a boy. It's important for me to have a French sounding name. I just can't stand people who barely speak English but name their kids after a soap opera characters. My bf is half-Greek, so we will/would probably consider Greek names too. I especially like Lena.

Strangely enough, any grade school teacher here in Quebec will tell you that French speaking kids with an English first-name are more likely to be problem kids. I didn't believe this until I saw my mom's student's list (she works with kids with learning disabilities) They were all named Kevin, Michael, Jessica, Jennifer... while the "normal" list had the usual proportion of French/English/Ethnical names.

This waitress at the restaurant where I work came up to me the other day and told me she had decided on a name for her future baby girl (yes, she is always this random). Now, keep in mind, this girl is very white, very scandanavian, and favors bleached blond hair, blue eyeshadow, and expressions like "ain't never."

The name she had decided upon? "Shakira Charlize."

Lord forgive me for mocking anyone's choice of names, but that poor, poor child . . .
