re: the registering with eloping. We weren't going to register either, but my mom INSISTED (repeatedly!). To the point that it was easier to register to get her to be quiet. We only told people who asked, and if my mom went off and told everyone, that's HER business.... IP: Logged |

Add me to the list of digsters getting married! I got engaged almost two months ago, so it seems a little late for me to announce it in the engagement thread. I wish cableboy and I could elope, but because of previous drama with his sister, his parents never got a wedding with her. Plus, he's the only son (very important for Asian families), so we must put on a wedding for at least his family. I'm already stressed out trying to find a venue for the ceremony and reception. Being in the Bay Area, everything is ridiculously overpriced. I've been looking into city-owned sites, and the site fees alone range from $1650 to $2500. The wedding is going to cost a bundle, and I don't even have very extravagent taste...okay, I lied, I do have extravagent taste in food (mm, filet mignon), but I don't want a fancy gown or truckloads of flowers. Just the site fees and catering together are going to cost over $10k for 80-100 guests! How do you guys keep your heads when it comes to wedding planning? When I browse through other wedding chat boards, I suddenly have insane urges for THE PERFECT WEDDING. I try to remind myself that I'm having the wedding as a big party for friends and relatives to have fun, eat good food, and dance drunkenly into the night. I find myself too often obsessing over chair covers, centerpieces, invitations and a myriad of other details that I forget why I'm planning a wedding at all. I guess I'm torn between my usual laid back self and my latent bridezilla. I sometimes feel as if I have two personalities...normal me and BRIDE MEMEME. Am I going insane? IP: Logged |

We registered at my mom's insistence, and I was really surprised at how many people used it. (We also didn't tell anyone about it, but it got passed around.) For the top three things, I would have to say that I LOVE having good silverware (it's not like it's super-pricey, but it's HEAVY and will never bend, I swear. I also love my new dishes (Fiestaware) and my favorite luxury item is my Empire Red Kitchenaid mixer. I LOVE that. I just made cookies with it a week or so ago, it is the best thing ever. ANd that even stays on my counter because I love it so. My wedding was like Kena's description, close family & friends, an officiant, cake, and champagne. We also had a meal and I wore a dress, but it was very lowkey, and planned in 6 weeks, and totally perfect for me. I hardly got to talk to the 30 guests we DID have, so I can't even IMAGINE having ten times that. But hey! To each their own! IP: Logged |

victory! I just finished gluing 150 invitations! I think I'm even still glad that I decided to make them myself... congrats to all the newly engaged! dewgirl, sophie... how are things coming? IP: Logged |

wow, I'm very impressed at all the glueing, and at the fact that you don't seem to have glued your fingers TO anything (which is the first think I'd end up doing!)... IP: Logged |

Congrats to all the newly engaged digsters! minxx -- regarding the registry, i'm really glad that we registered for quality knives - they'll last forever and are a godsend. we got a paring knife, a japanese chef knife, bread knife, serrated knife, a boning knife, and a few more for good measure. i use the chef's knife and serrated knife every day. i would register for heavy-bottomed pots and pans. we regret not registering for a fancy-schmancy coffe machine, we've been through 4 crappy ones in 3 years and don't want to shell out the money to get the nice one ourselves! well I mostly made them. I had plain invitations with raised borders printed professionally (for surprisingly little money) then cut the vertical borders off, glued ribbon to the top and bottom borders and then glued the whole shebang to a heavy cardstock. I was a little worried about how it was all going to come together, but I think they came out pretty well -- I'll post pics in a couple of days. I did in fact glue my fingers together... how'd you know? IP: Logged |

cablejunkie, I don't know if this applies in your area, but here in the south, lots of places are closed on Sundays. I rented out a restaurant (well, actually just the fancy bar that was next door and shared a kitchen with the restaurant--it was run by the same owners) on a Sunday evening to have my wedding/reception. They didn't charge anything for the location rental; I just had to buy all food and alcohol through them. I have other friends who have done the same thing. I guess the restaurant owners realize that they'll make a lot of money without having to really do much. I don't know if that is something that would work for you, but it is a way to keep some costs down. And minxx, register for everything you've ever wanted! I didn't register for much because my friends and family don't have much money. But we got everything on the registry, and I really wish I'd registered for more. I'd say dishes, flatware, bedding, small appliances (a kitchen@id mixer, perhaps IP: Logged |

Gemini-Thanks for the feedback. Most places around here are open on Sundays, but with a slightly reduced rate. It's a lot more affordable to hold an event during a weekday. I originally reserved a place for a Sunday night, but cableboy is adamant about having the wedding on a Saturday night. The whole process is difficult because every venue we've looked at have at least one glaring problem (too cold/windy, price, weird layout between dance floor & reception area, price, cableboy hates it, price, no availability, etc.). *edited because I got confused about which thread I was reponding to* [This message has been edited by cablejunkie (edited 06-08-2004).] IP: Logged |

when we registered (at my mother's insistence) we went ahead and registered for everything we thought we would possibly like to have, in a varying range of prices too, that way our friends & family had a choice in each price range (we're doing that for our baby registry too). We didn't expect to really get anything (we eloped after all, we didn't expect any gifts), but got quite a number of gifts, we were very surprised. I really really like the mixing bowls that we got, it is a set of three with this little handle hookey thing on the side that you can hold on to while you're mixing stuff. That and the lovely salad spinner, we ended up with two and we're going to keep the second one incase something happens to the first one because that's how much we love it! We have yet to play with the pizza stone, but I can't wait!!! IP: Logged |

I think registering has been my favourite thing so far in the wedding process. We registered for the usual... china, silver, crystal, bedding, etc from a department store. But we also went to Target and just played like kids in a candy store. Anything that looked like something we might consider wanting, we registered for. If you just look at it like fantasy shopping, I'm sure you'll come up with tons of things in no time. RE: Lots of guests, not so much $$$. When we originally made up our guest list, we had about 300 people. And we knew we wanted a traditional wedding. So here's what we're doing.... we're having our ceremony on a Friday night with just a cocktail reception for about 125 people. That will be our fancy, formal, reception. The next day, Saturday, we've rented out a park in the suburbs, and we're just going to have sort of an open-house reception for our co-workers, friends, etc with barbecue food. That way we could afford to include everyone without breaking our budget. As far as my wedding goes..... 100 days from today!!!! Aack! Okay, I'm actually not at all stressed, which stresses me out a little bit. We got our first response card back in the mail yesterday which was super exciting. I can't imagine making my own invitations... just addressing 75 of them with the inner and outer envelopes was work enough for me I have everything for my dress now except for some sexy lingerie for underneath! I'm not sure where to look for that, though, as most stores (VS, Fredericks, etc.) don't carry anything for me. Suggestions? This Friday afternoon I'm hoping to meet with a few bakeries and florists for cake and flowers. I really need to get moving on that... those were my "least interested in doing" categories, I've been procrastinating horribly. Finally... we're ordering my wedding band tonight. It's so purty. I wish I could post a picture for you guys, but it's custom made, so... no pics till I get it! Sorry for the long post IP: Logged |

quote: This is how I feel. I'm just 32 days away now, and I'm feeling like, shouldn't I be crazed right now? Because I'm totally not. Actually, I just spent all day writing thank you's for my shower, which stressed me out. I took longer than I should have, because the shower was a month ago. When I got a thank you from Boy's cousin (I ranted about her shower a few pages ago) yesterday, I freaked because her shower was a week after mine. So, she made me look a bit lazy, but hey, I'm over it, because I just took the last 2 weeks to move! That's a good excuse! I think thank you's will one day be my downfall. I've hated writing them ever since I was little. I made my invitations, but mostly I designed them on the computer, printed and trimmed them. No construction or glueing involved. But it sure is satisfying when people complement them. They turned out really well, I think. The underwear thing is of concern to me as well. When I went to try on my dress (my sister is making it) she says "Umm, I thought your boobs were bigger. I made this to the measurements you gave me... Oh, wait, they're just DOWN THERE. Get a better bra!" So yeah, that's more pressure than I need on a bra, thanks. IP: Logged |

I know that over here, it's possible to have bathing suits and lingerie custom-made in some specialty stores. IP: Logged |

Dewgirl, I'm curious. . . you said that VS and Fredricks don't have anything for you. Do you mean they don't have stuff you like, or do you have some special requirements that I don't know about? (I'm picturing a third boob. )

Dewgirl, do you have any independently owned lingerie boutiques near you? I find that smaller stores have a much better selection than chain stores, and the service is usually 20 times better, too. Alternatively, would you consider shopping online? IP: Logged |

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! No third boobs here! No, I'm just an extremely small size (34AA) that most stores don't carry. I haven't looked into any specialty shops yet, though that's a good idea. I'm not really up for buying this kind of stuff online, though it might be a good place to find ideas! IP: Logged |

I don't know if this question is already in this thread but I'm too lazy to look through the whole thing: When you send wedding announcements? I've sent the invitations to the few people that are actually invited to the wedding and reception. But, do you send the announcements to all the non-invites before or after the wedding? I've always thought we would announce it after the actual wedding but it seems that some people are expecting to know before the ceremony. IP: Logged |
|
chitowngal Housesitter |
my understanding is that the announcements go out AFTER the ceremony. IP: Logged |
|
Dewgirl Housesitter |
Agree.... traditionally they should go out the day of the wedding, but who has time for that? I'd say, as soon after the wedding as possible. IP: Logged |
|

yeah, ours haven't gone out yet...we got married in February...I'm starting to think that we may not send actual announcements for the wedding, but send out a family newsletter for Christmas this year...its almost too late to do formal announcements... IP: Logged |

Dewgirl If I were you Id go to the place where you got your dress and ask them if they coud reccomend any lingerie boutiques. They might be able to come up with a few places you hadnt thought of. Plus a lot of wedding shops have deals going with the lingerie boutiques as well which mean it mightnt be too pricey. IP: Logged |

I was in my friend's wedding and she had bracelets made with our initials engraved on them. We all wore them during the ceremony. I thought it was cute. IP: Logged |

For my friend's wedding, she gave us all gold necklaces with pearls set at intervals on it. They were beautiful and we all wore them during the ceremony - she was all about having a unified look. It was a really nice gift.

I am going to be living in this thread for the next year or so- and "mania" is right! I got engaged on June 4th, so not even a whole month ago. I've been with E forEVER (as in, almost a decade- since high school) so this whole development wasn't much of a surprise, though a very happy event nonetheless. I'm currently in school, and have a couple years left of grad school. So when he did propose, I really didn't think we'd even start throwing around ideas about dates for a year or so- although I'd love to do it asap. Turns out, he feels the same way, and over the last 2 weeks we've basically planned our wedding for August 2005. I got my dress (4th one I tried on!) but it won't be ready for *8 month* (I don't understand it either.) We've picked the people in our bridal party and made our invite list. I've picked out the super cool beach theme handmade invitations (not handmade by me, though.) Found the site (a hotel in Montego Bay, Jamaica.) Sending out "save the date" magnets soon. The whole wedding will be on the sand, but the whole elegant reception, sit down dinner, dancing under the stars shebang. We are inviting about 70 people and expecting about 50 to come. I've picked out the gifts for my bridesmaids, and the cake. I know there is lots more to think about, but I feel like I have gotten a pretty decent headstart. If money wasn't an issue (as well as having 50% of the guests flying in from the west coast or Britain) I could totally pull it off THIS August instead of next. IP: Logged |

I found a pair of shoes I loved last summer, a month after I got engaged, and then bought another pair 2 weeks ago, because they matched my wedding ring! I couldn't pass them up! So now I have 2 pairs, and I'm not sure which I'm going to be wearing. We'll just see, I guess. Yeah, and even though I've been engaged for nearly a year, I only planned the wedding in the last six months. If you just sit down and do it, it really doesn't take that much time, unless you're doing something completely over the top! Two weeks left! EEEEEeeee! IP: Logged |

My friend took me to Jackson Heights, and in one of the Indian stores there, they had tons of silver shoes. My ring is platinum with tiny diamond specks, and the shoes had bands with rhinestones on them. They're really sparkly. The first pair, I got at a N!ne West Outlet. They're white t-strap mary janes. Those are more me, but the second pair is more wedding-y. Yeah, I love my wedding band. We bought it at Fortun0ff. They just opened one in White Plains. And it's only a couple of blocks from a brand new Target. IP: Logged |

Um, I'm totally MARRIED now! We're at a hotel in Toronto, enjoying our complimentary cocktail hour and free internet access. I'll give a big recap when I get back, but I'll just say everthing went PERFECT! We had a beautiful day our ceremony was just perfect. OK, gotta run. Phil's on the other computer in the hotel here - he's like, "who are you writing to?" and I said "who do you THINK i'm writing to?" and he got it right - "digsmagazine.com?!" So, yay for digs. OK, can you tell I'm tipsy from the free booze? I'm now Mrs. Anderson! I love it! IP: Logged |

congratulations, Kellyrae, may you and your husband have a very long and happy life together. I'm married too! The day was very special. Everyone got all teary at the ceremony (except me, grinning like a fool), our best friends did beautiful readings from John Donne, Dad got a standing ovation with his Father-of-the-Bride speech, in which he said we'd chosen an auspicious week to get married as Ronald Reagan had died. One of my favourite moments wasn't caught on film - sneaking out of the reception to have a spliff with the bridesmaid and the best man. We did look odd, a woman in a wedding dress, a Chinese guy in a kilt and a woman in a blue silk dress clustered furtively at the bottom of a sordid alley. Honeymoon in Sri Lanka was great too, after a bumpy start (5-star resort in Dambulla was full of obnoxious and abusive Italian soccer hooligans, but we found better places in Kandy and Galle anyway). We got to wash elephants in a river and play with the baby ones, and shopped like lunatics. Jewellery is my big weakness and I thought my finances might be reeling after a visit to the world's gem centre, but everything was so much cheaper than anywhere else in the world - please excuse my bragging as excitement, but I bought a 3.5ct sapphire ring for about 1/4 of what I would have paid here! I am dying for my first cocktail party...... [This message has been edited by Sophie (edited 06-28-2004).] IP: Logged |
