This makes me think of those club ads where they say "stylish dress required." What about "black tie event" ? IP: Logged |

I know despite the "official definition" floating around, people see "optional" and interpret it eighteen different ways. I'd go with "formal dress" or something like that. Everyone has something formal in their closet, and if they don't it's time they did - I wouldn't worry about it being an imposition on folks. Even cashless students can get something used from value village and iron it nicely. === Hah, I sound like a bit of a formalwear nazi for someone who just told a guest they could show up naked as long as they wore a towel when they were near my grandma. Ooh, I'd avoid "black tie optional" because it's just confusing. Unfortunately many of my friends only seem to see the word optional. I like saying "formal best" because everyone knows what formalwear is. I know someone posted about a dress earlier, and yeah, I'd wait to buy one until after you're engaged. You can find AMAZING deals online and fashions definitely change. We're in a 2-year engagement (year 1 is almost over!!) and I still change my mind every so often. I must have 5-6 dresses saved in my "favorites" online since I can never decide. I also haven't even entered a dress shop, so I don't know if the style I like on some model will look anywhere near as good on me. If you're ok with an informal dress (no train, not a lot of embellishment) you can get a steal on bridesmaid dresses that come in white. I haven't used it yet, but love searching for dresses on bridesave.com. It's addictive. IP: Logged |

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone... This is what I have so far-- Let me know if it would offend you or make you feel put out if you got this on an invitation insert: "Dress in your best and bring your dancing shoes! We've got a great reception planned- Dinner is buffet-style and we've booked a mini Big Band so we can dance the night away! (Formal Attire- Get Swanky!)" This is followed by the time line of when people can arrive and when dinner is being served, etc. Edited to add: My date is October 18th of this year, Meridith. Well, she did it. Nutter ordered dresses for all of the f*cking bridesmaids for the rehersal dinner. WHERE NO ONE WILL BE besides our immediate families and the bridal party. Yeah. Imagine TEN F*CKING GIRLS wearing THIS four of whom are pregnant. Pink. Horizontal. Stripes. With a natural waist. TEN of us! It is going to be hideous. Not to mention tacky. Ugh. And I sure as hell don't want to be around when Big A (my oldest sister and the other maid of honor) finds out. She is going to f*cking FLIP! Ugh. I mean, the dress is fine by itself. BUT WITH TEN OTHER GIRLS WEARING THE EXACT SAME THING! GROSS! IP: Logged |

WOW. That's... wow. by the way... 10 bridesmaids???? I'm glad I'm having all men stand up (my side and his). No bridesmaid's dresses, no nothing. men are so much easier! IP: Logged |

Wow, I always wondered how that situation turned out. All the bridesmaids wearing matching dresses to the REHEARSAL! Crazy! I think the dress is pretty cute (I'm such a girly-girl), but not enough to dress 10 of my friends in it. Dare I ask, what is the bride wearing to the rehearsal? IP: Logged |

crowjoy Housemate |
There is such a photo op at that rehearsal... And, by way of explanation since I don't usually participate in this thread all that much, Meredith I'm scoping for details. Come on now I'm supposed to be reporting all the glory to Mander! IP: Logged |

possibly a pink striped wedding gown?? yikes, Brookie. That's going to be a lot of pink stripes. I feel really bad for the pregnant girls...that would be a little uncomfortable. IP: Logged |

You've got to be kidding. She's making you wear the same dress for the rehearsal dinner too?? And you're still speaking to her?? I'm all for bridesmaids coordinating with each other for the wedding. I had planned on asking everyone to wear blue (kicking myself for not doing that...) but I could not imagine A. requiring the same shoes B. hair up or hair down - let ALONE the rehearsal dinner. Sheesh. IP: Logged |

Probably end of May next year, whenever we can book the Cricket Club. BF's family are coming from the UK, mine are coming from Australia, my 3 bridesmaids are coming from England, Singapore and New Zealand, and it's all such a bloody headache to co-ordinate all the flights and air miles and everything. I am seriously considering doing it by web cast. I walked through a shopping centre today and they had a game of human skittles set up - bowling pins about 5' tall, a rope tied to the ceiling, you get strapped to the bottom of the rope and hurled into the pins. It looked AWESOME. I asked the attendant "do you hire this out for weddings?" and she looked at me as if I were barking mad. She said she didn't think so, but I might hassle her bosses. IP: Logged |

Maps in the Invites What kind of maps did/are you planning on using? Hand drawn & scanned? (or using Illutrator or Freehand) Yahoo Maps? Map Quest? We're gonna work on these tonight and I'm trying to get a feel for what works best. Thanks!! IP: Logged |

meredithva Housemate |
Leslie-how far are you sending people? If it's a short distance, you can probably map it yourself. And if it's easier to give directions based on landmarks, you also might want to make it yourselves. Otherwise, I'd leave it up to Mapquest. IP: Logged |

I drew a simple map by hand with a sharpie and photocopied it. I realized afterwards that the arrow isn't pointing in exactly the right spot, but pshwa, they'll all find us (80 people on the beach, how could you miss us?) and it'll be chaos anyway. I'm getting married in 2 weeks! This is going to be an awesome party and it better not rain. IP: Logged |

I've done a few maps for invitations, and I always find a good map of the location (a lot of times the ceremony/reception site will have one available to download from their website, or to scan -- otherwise, mapquest works fine), paste it into Freehand (just because I like it better than Illustrator and am faster using it), then trace and include only the most crucial information. I like it because I get an accurate map that looks pretty too. [This message has been edited by yeefan (edited 08-01-2003).] IP: Logged |

Be careful with Mapquest and double-check their directions. I was sent 10 miles in the wrong direction once. IP: Logged |

I find Mapblast to be much more reliable than Mapquest. Additionally, Mapblast allows you to edit your route for the fastest way, or the easiest way, or the "no backroads" way, etc. I printed out both Mapquest and MApblast routes for my trip last month, and Mapblast was far and away the better product. I think I may have asked this here before, but I browsed through the thread and didn't find anything about it. Anyway, Matt and I went to a wedding this weekend, where a traditional Irish band played. It was *SO* fun. There was something really different about having live entertainment at a wedding-- I've only been to ones with DJs in the past. We really want to have a band at our wedding, but we're clueless as to how to find/book one. It seems like all the information I have from my local wedding magazines, and the bridal show I attended, all have to do with DJs. I guess I could ask the bride and groom from Saturday's wedding how they found a band, but they're on their honeymoon now. Any married digsters have some tips on how to find and book a band? Do you have to go with a "wedding band" or can you book just about anyone? IP: Logged |

Is there a university with a school of music in your area? We hired a violinist for our reception from our local university and she was super. If you have time, try putting up a poster on a bulletin board or an ad in the paper--there is a lot of untapped talent in schools. IP: Logged |

SLourdes, i think you can book any band you want! though i think if you got a band/group that specifically did weddings, they'd be more open and compromising to what you'd want them to do. i have a handful of college friends who did string ensembles for weddings for a while (macalester grads). and i'm with PB&J about checking out schools. in mpls, i would definitely call macphail to see if any of their studio teachers do outside gigs. My, isn't this a busy thread. Makes sense! I'm not a big poster, but i figured this deserves it. My man and I have booked our site, and I'm very excited. I'm so excited! I went to Arizona to see S's mom - she's making my dress, the bridesmaids' dresses, and the flower girl dress, and she's doing our flowers too (she'll be *very* busy until February!) - and we bought all of the fabric for our dresses. They are going to be so amazing. We found this beautiful silk, blue with a hint of a violet hue, with light blue/silvery flowers throughout for the top of the bridesmaids dresses. We're pairing it with a steely-blue/not quite periwinkle colored silk for the skirt. I can't wait to see how gorgeous all my girls are going to look IP: Logged |

Here I am, in the week of! 5 more get-ups till marrying time. I refuse to get worked up about all the little things that are in the back of my mind - what if my dress has wrinkled from being hung up in the closet, what if the table decorations don't look good, what if, what if...Forget it. I am getting married and to me, that is the important part! I printed a final draft of the ceremony last night and I love it. Now I have to go meet with the site coordinator and the caterer...I am ready for Saturday, let me tell you! IP: Logged |

I'm so excited for both of you, Yam and Josie Jo! I can't wait until it's my last week! Formally booked the ceremony and reception location this weekend, after getting the boy's and family's approval. Asked my dear friend Ian to be my "man of honour". Found out I'm getting the site for cheaper than planned. And Alan wants me to ride in on a horse and carriage. Yup,things are going well IP: Logged |

I've been thinking about you, Josie Jo! And how this weather should be breaking before your big day, because OH GOD, I can't imagine having to deal with anything formal in the 87% humidity. COngrats! Good luck! YAY!!

Thanks G! We're inside (at the museum), so the weather is no big deal at all! And if an affair can be formal in dress but casual in attitude, then that's us. No fancy band or dancing, buffet dinner and not a ton of flowers, just family and friends and me in a great dress! ![]() As for zen, yammers, I think it's more sublimation!! More like Scarlett O'Hara - "I won't think about that now, I'll think about that tomorrow". Like the 18 table cards I should probably create to tell people to take their favors home... CAN'T WAIT!!
