We mostly upgraded our kitchen stuff too, and got matching dishes and silverware. Nothing too fancy - but matching at least.

I would say boardgames and such would be perfectly acceptable.

Well, My Big Gay Wedding is finally back on track and my girlfriend/fiance is ready to set a date. We decided to put off a date until our families were more accepting and it seems like everyone is finally a-ok. Now our biggest concern is the venue. We're not broke, but we don't want to spend a lot of money and no one is going to be helping us (as far as we know). I've been hanging onto the idea of renting a house owned by the parks dept. ($400 deposit, that's it!) and using all the money on everything else. Since Meghan is just now getting on board, she's starting to show me the downfalls of a do-it-yourself shindig versus a package from a local hotel. For example, if we rent a house, we have to set everything up and take everything down (or pay someone to do it, which is more likely). We'll also be at the mercy of anyone else looking to rent the house we want (first come, first serve a year in advance)and might not even get a large enough place.
But the idea of a cheap hotel wedding package is almost enough to make me cry. I guess we'll have to tour hotels in the area, and maybe they're not as bad as I imagine, but...ugh. It just seems so bland, and most likely more so the lower the price is. I mean, you get what you pay for, right?
Our one other idea is to spend more than we ever wanted to and go with a boat cruise. But it would almost double our original budget (which is low, but still).
How did you all decide on your venues, or how are you deciding? Is money a factor or do you have help?

I have never had a wedding, but I've sure been to a lot, and the ones that were the most fun and the most personal could have been held in a parking lot. To me, the most important elements are that you're relaxed and happy and your guests are comfortable. If going with the Holiday Inn package is going to keep you from going broke and crazy, I'd say go for it! If that still makes your skin crawl, what about a cute B&B? They often have packages and many of the services of a hotel in a more quaint setting.

Good luck!

I think we're just frustrated by the money and the fact that it seems like nothing around the DC area is affordable. I wish we knew someone with a big backyard so we could have our ceremony there. I love the park idea, but the set up and clean up would have to be done within hours of the wedding. If we knew someone with a house, we could start and end on their schedule. Oy.
Meghan's more concerned about the gay issue and is afraid that when vendors find out it's not a traditional wedding, they might cancel. I think that would be more the case with snooty places than with cheaper places, though.
I'm working on the B & B angle, believe me. Unfortunately, there aren't many around here, so we might have to drag our guests a good hour or so out of the area. At this point, I'm starting to look beyound MD and VA and maybe check out West Virginia.
At least we could both agree that this place is definitely not for us even though it's cheap as hell. Then again, maybe if I can rent real plates instead of using the paper plates they provide...

Yay! I hardly ever look in this thread and here you are!

We basically got married in a park... our fee was a donated refrigerator and lots of liquor for the staff, but we didn't feel comfortable asking them to do stuff. We rented everything, from flatware to table cloths, to buffet stuff. The rental company set up and tore down everything. All we had to do was wipe off/rinse the dishes. (If you go this route, plan on more than 1 fork per person, d'oh!) The caterer set up and tore down the buffet. We dealt with setting up the decorations and had a core group of folks who handled the after party stuff like rinsing those dishes and reclaiming all the stuff that didn't belong to the rental company or caterer (not to mention taking care of all that pesky left over wine.)

If you stick to just that and buy instead of making your wedding cake (a whole other story), don't decide to cook dinner for the whole group the night before and avoid tequila shots at least 2 days before and after (cuz planning a wedding will do that to you) you should be fine!

Did I mention YAY!!??

Bwahaha, but you'd be missing out on a LEGENDARY wedding! Your guests' anticipation would be ALMOST overwhelming!

Man, is $4000 cheap? How depressing. Me I'm renting a picnic site for Cdn$130. (That's the deluxe, private site.) Catering may be a whopping Cdn$1000 if mum goes all out. You should come get married here.

Heh, plus our court of appeal just declared that prohibiting same-sex marriage is a human rights violation, and has given the gubmint one year to change it or they'll just be declared legal. Woohoo!

It's 101 days to my wedding!

I have heretofore refrained from freaking out too much over the little things - however, this may not be so little.

The particular insurance company that holds my new homeowners insurance policy is hemming and hawing over producing the "certificate of liability insurance" that my site requires.

My old insurance company, with whom I had renters and auto, said sure, not a problem, come to us in June and we'll set it up!

Now this new company, who I pay a lot more, seems like they might not do it for me! What do I do then???

Just, tell me not to panic.

Yeah, $4,000 seems like a whole lot here. But everything in DC seems way more expensive than in Minnesota.

I've started looking at some wedding sites (even though I'm not officially engaged. But it's happening soon!) and the most expensive (and the place I'd really like to have it) is $2,000. I've found a gorgeous mansion that is $175 per hour, and the catering is $19/person and that includes the cake!! There's also a reading room in a historic library that looks way cool, and I think is only $300 for the whole day. The plaza there is $70 for a wedding ceremony. Seems pretty darn cheap to me!

Doh! I just found out that the houses I thought were free other than a $400 deposit aren't free at all! The place we were going to choose is actually $1300 for 6 hours. Lordy.
We need to just sneak our guests onto lakeside property, have a quick ceremony and party till the cops come.

I'm going to cry now.
Our only other alternative is to have a wedding near my parents, but that's in Boston, which is even more expensive than D.C. Must. Not. Bite. Nails.

Stephanie, do the sites you're looking at have their prices listed right on the webpages? The locations I'm looking at have all sorts of cost information about their catering, but nothing on the halls themselves. I don't want to call and ask really, since I have no details (since, y'know, I'm not engaged yet), but I am curious!

Edited to fix terrible your/you're spelling error.

What about going out to Assateague or something like that? Its incredibly romantic/beautiful and I am SURE it won't be too expensive. AND people can spend time at the beach! Who could ask for anything more? I can see it now...two pretty ladies surrounded by wild horses on the beach at sunset!!!! Gosh, that sounds beautiful...

Dewgirl- Yeah, most of them list them on their websites. And the one that didn't, I was browsing a different site that listed a whole bunch of reception sites in the Twin Cities, and it had the cost there.

Since I'm feeling bored, here they are:

www.summitmanor.com

www.490summit.com

www.jjhill.org/Events/library_rental.html

I'm sorry meredith!! One of my best friends lives in DC, and she's always complaining about the high cost of living. That really sucks that it also translates to wedding venues as well. I bet you'll find something, though. Do you know anyone else who's gotten married in the area, that might be able to point you to some good deals? Or maybe you might just have to pay more for the site, but try and skimp in other areas.

yeah! plus on the island you might run in to.. MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE!

Man, I loved all those horse books. Who knew chincoteague was a real place? So awesome.

====

So I have now booked my picnic place! it's not quite the one I had in mind, there's no shelter, but it's by the beach which is awesome. $70 for all day. Sweeeet. Okay I'll stop gloating now. It's not the day I had in mind either, sooner in fact, and on two family members' birthdays. Oh well, we'll order more cake. Now I can book an officiant from church.

Holy CRAP I am getting MARRIED in like 3 months. Whee!

anyone know of any examples of wedding invitations on the web? I'm not getting engraved hoohaw paper or anything, but I'd like to get the format more or less like the standard. (Though it breaks my heart not to just print clip-art of a monkey on to duct tape, I sense that some restraint in this department would be wise when dealing with my extended soon-to-be-family..)

Since everyone else is doing it, here are a few places that are in the preliminary running for us (though I haven't been to most of these places in years, so I'll have to visit again)

Geneva National Resort

Grand Geneva Resort

Abbey Resort

Interlaken Resort

Right now I'm leaning towards the Interlaken, from their website and vague memories, but like I said, I haven't been to any of these in years...

Oh man, been there. We finally cut out and went to dinner. The chapel was also so small that half the guests had to watch the ceremony on closed circuit TV in the lobby. Tacky, tacky.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone! I think we've come to terms with the expense of the area and are just going to have to find a way to stretch each dollar.
As for locations that are out of the way, what do people think about that? Do you mind driving far to get to a wedding? Or flying into a major city and then having to drive for two or three hours? Hmm. We have almost no family here, so we'll have a lot of people flying in.

Our locale was 2 hours from the nearest person invited, including ourselves. It was beautiful, everyone was happy to be there and if they complained about the fly/drive they didn't do it to us. Do what you want, it's your day!

We used to go to the Grand Geneva every summer I don't remember much about it, because I think the last time we went, I was maybe 9, but I remember having the best time there.

I am more than willing to travel for the wedding of someone I love (and have done it many times). If I end up marrying someone that I meet out here, more than likely either his family/friends or my family/friends will have to travel. I think it's just expected when you move away that someone will have to travel if they want to attend your wedding.

you could try stores like Art Box at Metrotown or Morning Glory (at Lougheed Mall, and I think there's other locations out there, too) and the Sanrio (and Sanrio-ish) Store.

You could also make your own postcards...that way you could put whatever you want on 'em.

I'm not really sure. Do you mean the University club (which, silly enough, is on Summit and not University)? Because if so, then no. But I've only looked at these places online. As soon as things are more official we're going to go check them out. I'm sure they'll be beautiful, since Summit is just such a wonderful neighborhood.

The Science Museum *does* look like a nice place for a wedding. I think it's a little on the expensive side, but the windows and the view would probably make it worth it.

I'm definetly getting married somewhere in St. Paul. There are just so many beautiful locations.

i also like the view of downtown st paul and the st paul cathedral from the historical society too.

i feel like st paul has better locations for weddings than mpls. more accessible as well. all the mpls places are a pain to get to.

So I spoke too soon on the cheap weddings in Minnesota thing. I got a brochure from the library I linked to earlier, and while their website says it's only $275 for the whole day, they meant that for corporate meetings only. The brochure kindly lets me know that a wedding would be $3,600. *Grumble* Oh well, I think I like the mansions on Summit better anyway. Hmpf!

Yeah, I've also been feeling very misled by reception places as I search through websites. And it seems like as soon as the word wedding is mentioned, they can jack up the price as much as they want. My area has a bunch of historic houses that can be used for various purposes. On the website, there's only mention of a $400 deposit. I talked to someone months ago and she only mentioned the $400 deposit. Then I talked with another person the other day and she finally told me there was a rental charge on top of that. I have no problem with the fact that there is a rental fee, but it would have been nice to know what it was upfront. Grr.
On the other hand, it seems like we've found someone really helpful and honest at one of the sites we're thinking about. Not only is she answering all of our questions truthfully, she wants us to come by this weekend and watch a wedding reception being set up. Yay! I feel like someone's finally being upfront with me. What a relief.

So, she went with the dress I liked from the beginning (why in god's name did we have to go through this ENTIRE process when we liked the first one we tried on) but then decided because she "conceded" with the dress my mother, father, and I liked, that she IS going to have the BMs wear the same outfit to the rehersal dinner. I canNOT wait to see the sparks fly when my other sister, the other MOH, hears about this one! Oy!
