I've thrown a couple of showers, one at my place and one at the honoree's. Ask people to help out, planning games or bringing a dish. Lots of times people and guests or other friends just like to be helpful. A classy brunch would be cool, with some ice-breaker, tease the bride to be games. Are you planning on having favors? How many people are you expecting?

I forgot!! The coolest bridal shower favor I've seen (you might not even need to have one, I'm not sure of the ettiquette, I just thought this was so cool!) was a wooden spoon with the couple's name and wedding date engraved on the back. It can with a cute note card tied on that said something about stiring a cake and thinking of the bride and groom.

In the baby shower post you said something about everyone helping to make something for the bride and groom, how about asking everyone to bring a favorite recipe and then at the shower you can supply stuff to decorate a page with the recipe and then put them all in an album for the bride. This could be a really inexpensive, but nice gift for the couple.

oooo, the recipe idea is a nice one. im not sure of the numbers, probably not too many people since a lot of the wedding guests are out-of-towners.
as for helpers, im actually hoping to plan this with the two unofficial bridesmaids (who live out of town, which is why i am taking the helm on the shower), which makes me a little nervous because 1) planning will have to be done over email and 2) i dont know either of them. sigh...we shall see. anything for a friend, right?

They did the recipe thing at a shower I went to last month. Two recipe cards (bought at a stationary store, I think) were included with the invitation.

One of the showers I planned was thrown by all the bridesmaids who lived in various states in the East Coast. We planned via email. I didn't know a few of the girls, but it worked out fine in the end.

I just hosted a bridal shower for my best friend yesterday. I, too, had limited resources, and the other bridesmaids were more than willing to kick in, especially since it was in my apartment. We played two games, which we had decided were less lame than most, first I wrote a Mad Lib in fairy tale style about my friend and the groom met (quite funny and she got to keep the finished product), and her sister asked the groom a long list of questions which we then procedded to ask her (ala Newlywed Game). FOr food, we got several trays of fruit and dip, veggies and dip, cheese/crackers from the grocery store, as well as a cake and ice cream. Plently of food, and nice that it was pre-done, as most bridesmaids were coming in from out of state that day.
Finally, for favors, I put together most of the materials for making homemade eye pillows, and everyone chose their own scent, mixed it in the rice, and filled 'em up. Much cheaper than conventional favors.
Hopefully that was helpful! It turned out nicely, and my friend had a great time. I also took digital pictures of my friend with each gift and the person who gave it to her, so she could write thank you's easier and have a nice (instant) remembrance of the day.

I just threw a party for my friend. I hate playing games so we didn't. Instead we had a little craft project. When I sent out the invitation I told the guests that they would be making clocks that showed the appropriate time of the day the gift would be used. My husband made clock faces in CAD and at the shower, I had a pair of scissors, glue stick and construction paper for everyone to use
to make clocks.

It was a riot. Everyone -- including the grandmas -- had fun. We visited, cut and pasted. She got to keep the clocks which were colorful and creative. When everyone had finished the clock, the bride had to guess what the gift might be. (She's been notrious for guessing her gifts since she was little)

We also had good food and it was cheap. I made Chex mix (because the it is a food the bride loves), fresh fruit and chicken salad sandwiches.
We took round loaves of bread and sliced it horizontally two times. We spread the salad on the layers put a piece of leaf lettuce on it. Once re-assembled we cut it into wedges. Each slice had toothpick with an olive on top.
We had punch, water and coffee to drink.

My sister did a bridal shower for me that I loved. My last name is Wolf - his first name is Pete so it was all around that theme. She re-wrote the story so it included all the people we knew etc.(including the cat). And I don't think we played many games (we're not big game people). We did the "how many famous Peter's do you know?" and we also did the "get to know the bride & groom" trivia game - always a hit. Especially when "When she was three, what was Meggo's career ambition?" And she listed off three options. It was to own a grocery store like Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street.
Anyway. She also did the recipes, asked everyone to contribute some and on the back put either advice or a favorite memory & then they all went in a binder that she'd covered the front of with stickers.
Still love those recipes best.
The favors for that shower were pens that she put a silk flower on the top of and then wrapped the rest in floral tape so they looked like flowers with stems. Very cool. (probably very cheap).

Also - another bridal shower I had - my friend decided I needed wine glasses. So she went to some outlet store, bought 13 glasses & bought glass paint. We spent the whole day painting them and then she baked them and presented them at another shower. I still love them and wish I had a place to display them.

I think it's the thought that counts behind a nice shower - way more than the money spent. What are her interests? Does she like cooking? Does she need cleaning stuff? Do they have any funny history? The original ones are the ones everyone remembers & appreciates.
