...Halloween!

It's coming up, I've been invited to a party, and I have no idea what to wear! (Sniff, sob!) Wondering what y'all are thinking about your costumes?

Well, I kin tell ya what I did last year. It still amuses me greatly but may not be for everyone.

I was a (drumroll) gothic chicken.

I made my costume out of a big box. I cut flaps on the sides for wings and one on the back for the tail. I spray painted it black and added black construction paper feathers with safety pins on the wings and tail. I made a beak out of yellow construction paper. I made that thing on the head on out of two heavy duty black rubber gloves which I slit up the sides and then stabled together.

I pinned the black gloves to my head. Ran a chain from the beak to it and used a small piece of elastic to hold the beak on (ala a kid's birthday hat). I wore the box over all black with black and white striped tights and black combat boots.

Children were frightened and lots of people had funny comments about it. I'll never top that.

Halloween is my favorite holiday too! A friend of mine and I are thinking of going as either a)Buffy and Faith or b) the two Ms. North Carolina's. They both work because I'm blonde and she's a brunette. There's a Halloween thread around here somewhere that has some great ideas on it. I'm co-hosting a party at a friend's house. Her and her husband live in a nice big victorian farmhouse with a huge back yard. Right now the invite list is close to 300 people. Should be a blast!

The easiest and cheapest costume I ever did (and one of the most popular) was Tippi Hedren from The Birds. I had a vintage ladies suit similar to the ones she wore in the film. Then I just fixed my hair similarly to hers (it was the same length and didn't matter to people that it was red instead of blonde). I got some fake birds from a craft store, spray-painted them black, and attached them to my hair and clothing to make it look like they were attacking me. Then I just finished it off with some fake blood. People loved it. If you don't already have a suit you can probably find one at a thrift store for pretty cheap.

As my name starts with a B (duh!) my family always called me Bee and I kind of have a bee theme going all the time, I decided that I was going to be The Queen Bee for Halloween last year. I bought yellow and black striped tights, spray painted an old pair of ugly heels yellow, put on a little black dress with sleeves in the same yellow and black tights material, made a yellow satin cape with a black feather boa as the fur trim and wore a plastic crown with bug antennas hot glued on! Oh! And I also had a septer. I love that costume.

Ginsu and I are hosting a Halloween party this year -- it's our first time doing a big theme-type party, and I'm totally excited about it. Traditionally, our friend E threw it, but she's since moved to upstate New York, and passed the torch along to us ... hope we can live up to the very high standards she's set.

We've already started working on our costumes ,but I'm feeling secretive about it so I'm not telling right now ... Last year, we went as made-up supervillains (pix here) named Cotton Candy and Slick Willy. They were very last-minute ideas, since we'd been in Morocco for three weeks and came back two days before the party with absolutely no clue what we wanted to be. Basically, we just looked for the craziest, most amusing (to us) get-ups we could find at the thrift shops, and made up something to fit the costume. So fun.

My student association has decided to host its famous semesterly beer bash on Halloween night. There's a whole marine/pirate theme going so I'd like to dress up accordingly.

Unfortunately, this theme has destroyed every little bit of inspiration I had. (my original idea was to dress up as Alice in Wonderland this year...). I'd like something original yet not too bulky because I'll probably be on the staff.

Any ideas?

Whee!! This is so funny, I'm glad I'm home alone. *giggles*

I'm thinking you can't go wrong with a pirate wench -- find a too-big horizontally striped shirt in red and white or black and white or something, cut and slice accordingly (bonus points for sporting it off-the-shoulder). Lotsa cleavage. Tattered black skirt, fishnet pantyhose, scarves draped and tied in various places (especially around the head), eyepatch, big gold hoop earrings. Black out a tooth or two, and wear buckled shoes or even black heels. Maybe even a long-haired wig in a pleasant straw-like texture (as if your hair is a salty sea-faring mess).

Or maybe a mermaid? I'd find a really long straight skirt or even a long, straight dress at a thrift shop and spray paint it green and maybe even glittery, paint fishy details on it by hand. Long hair with shells attached, body glitter, interesting eye makeup. (I keep thinking of the mermaids in "Hook" with Robin Williams.)

Or how about the plank that people have to walk? Or just carrying around a plank and continually telling people to walk it or take a drink?

Hee, that reminds me of the pirate & wench costumes at Trashy Lingerie. I can't recommend them for a student function, but they certainly are not bulky. [two notes: 1)this is in frames so you have to click through "costumes", and 2) it is probably not appropriate to view at work, even though I am. Anyway.]

My best inexpensive & last-minute costume was to just wear normal clothes, steal a bit of white greasepaint from another guest, and go as one of those milk-moustache ads. It was free, took 30 seconds, and everybody recognized it.

Finally, my friends and I will go as a pirate crew. I guess we will just find/make lots of piratish accessories and distribute them at the last minute.

I'm thinking about sewing a felt tricorn (I already made a cardboard prototype and it looks feasible). If it goes well, I might be making hats for everybody!

I shopped for our costume stuff this weekend and I'm so pumped! We're going as my version of little red riding hood and the wolf.

Mander will be the wolf. She's going to wear a black pompadour wig, black leather biker's jacket, white undershirt tank top, black jeans and her motorcycle boots.

I will be wearing a one piece pajama-shorts thing, in red of course, possibly with tights or something. I'll probably wear my black combat boots unless I can find red golashes which would be my first choice. On, the piece de resistance, a red knit cap with a pompom on top complete with ear flaps and chin ties. I'll either carry a basket or the big red vinyl carpet bag.

Oh yeah, charming as always!

Thanks to ReadyMade Magazine for the idea, I am going as a Freudian Slip!

I suck at coming up with ideas, so I am grateful for this. I have a black slip, will make a Dr. Freud nametage and sauce up the rest of me. Might see if I can find a lab coat or something since I might get chilly...hmmm but I don't want to cover up too much!

Hmm... I really have to hit the thrift stores soon.

Two of my college friends went as "Hefty" and "Wimpy" one year... you know, the garbage bags. I think the put the garbage bags on upside down, so that they could cinch the bottom around their waists, and cut a hole in what was the "bottom" for their heads, and holes for their arms... Then "Hefty" stuffed her bag full of wadded-up paper, and "Wimpy" just glued some trash-like bits to the ouside of her bag. Then they labeled themselves, and that was it! Everyone thought that they were pretty clever, and they didn't have to spend a heap on costumes.

This is exactly what my friends are dressing up for a fancy-dress wedding next week. They will be dressed like this on a beach in the middle of the afternoon.

Halloween is so hard here because it is not autumn. The leaves should be falling but the buds are budding instead. It does lead to skimpy costumes.

Anybody have any good ideas? I want something less funky/more sexy sort of thing...

I used a fairly big box... it came down to my knees and if I hadn't had flaps on the sides I wouldn't have been able to put my arms around it. I forgot to mention I also used a black plastic eye mask with the beak... found it the other day still attached.

You have long hair right? You could pull it up high and splay it out in a fringe like one of those fancy chickens, that would be cool.

Edited because the phrase fancy chickens gave me a mental image of a chicken with lots of jewelry, a boa and a big blue best of show ribbon. Hahaha. Maybe I need to eat something...

I'm loving this idea!
I'm still a little confused about the flaps.
You cut out holes for your arms and attached wing shaped flaps?
The hair thing... it's almost to my waist so I was thinking of a bun and slicking it down, covering my head in feathers. But I realized chickens don't have feather covered heads lol... they have that bumpy head thing going on. What could I use for that?
For the legs I'm thinking orange tights. And BIG fluffy orange house shoes.

If you turn the box upside down and put a whole in the bottom, that's where your head goes, so the box rests on your shoulders. You cut the flaps out of the sides so your arms stick out. I didn't bother to make them wing shaped, just cut a square where the top edge is the fold and put the paper feathers on them.

For the head piece I cut a pair of rubber gloves (I used black but those yellow dish gloves would be perfect) and, well, since I was goth I stapled them together. I'm not sure how you'd want to put them together... good glue maybe. Then just pin it to your hair. I can just see it with your fuzzy slippers, too great.

This is my first time posting in a long while--hi everyone!

Well, I was curious what everyone's plans for Halloween were, and what costumes they have in mind. (I searched for similiar thread but I couldn't find any...)

I gave up my dream of being Bjork in a swan dress (just don't have the time to deal with feathers / swan heads right now) and decided to be... Avril Lavigne. Not that I particularly like her. I just think she'd make a good costume. As for plans..hopefully I'll manage to find a decent costume party somewhere, but if all else fails I'll just wander around West Hollyhood.

I don't think I'm dressing up this year (no parties or anything to go to) but I was really considering making this Chinese take-out costume . Isn't it so cute? It might be a little complicated, I wasn't sure what you would actually make it out of, but I was thinking some kind of foamy stuff or cardboard spraypainted white. It would be hilarious for a couple to go as a take-out box and a fortune cookie, I think Let me know if any of you make it- I'm saving this idea for the next Halloween that I need a costume for!

ok, how about "Martha in jail"? You could get an orange or blue jumpsuit (easy to find this time of year from a halloween store) Do your hair like hers, or get a wig, and wear handcuffs. To help people "get it", maybe you could carry around a copy of MSLiving in a Kmart bag? hmmm...maybe I should do that...

I'm going to a costume party tomorrow night, and I've decided to go as Holly Golightly from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." I already have the black dress, and I've gone to Claire's to buy some inexpensive, tacky jewelry. The biggest thing for me is to make a beehive out of my short hair and a ponytail I bought at CVS.

My roommate is probably going to take you up on the Got Milk ad. She loved the idea!

I've decided to go as a flapper this year. My boy's going to be a beatnik. We're doing sort of subversive/decade theme.

I got a straight, sleeveless black dress from Target last night that has a little elastic in it that I plan to take out. Then I'm going to attach some green and gold fringe (it was all I could find!), make a sequinced headband with a feather (or a hat- I'm kind of undecided at the moment), add a feather boa (maybe in green to match the weird fringe), and one of those fake cigarette holders. I'm making a long pearl neckalace too. It should be pretty cute, I'm thinking. I just hope it works out okay since I don't exactly have the body of a flapper. The outfit has to be convincing enough, otherwise people are going to be asking- what's with the curvy girl in the weird fringe dress? Who's she supposed to be?

Bouffants are easiest with short hair. Went to a 50s cocktail party a while back and won the "best bouffant" prize...Here's what it takes: roll your hair on either hot rollers or velcro rollers to get "bend and lift" (very important to use a fair amount of gel or mousse). Once the rollers are cool, unroll and run your fingers through your hair. Then take a very fine tooth comb and tease the hell out of your roots. Smooth hair into the shape you want and spray the crap out of it with Aqua Net. Good luck!

Naynay, that is hysterical. My roommate decided to go as a "moral dilemma." She is going to wear her balck graduation gown and a judge nametag, and wear both a halo and devil horns. She is also going to wear a bit of gray, since no moral dilemma is just black or white.

I found a green feather boa to match my grasshopper wings, I am going to be a fabulous grasshopper!
