I know, it's a little early to start planning a Halloween party, but I'm co-hosting one this year, and thought I may as well gather some ideas. Has anyone thrown a really memorable Halloween bash that they'd like to share? What kind of food and drinks should we serve? Also, I think since we're the hostesses that we should dress up, but I haven't done a costume since the 9th grade! I want something original, but cute (I've never really been for scary costumes). I'd appreciate any ideas and stories! IP: Logged |

I'm a teacher, so i get to do it every year. Last year, I was Dexter, from Dexter's Laboratory (i love Cartoon Network). The kids really dug my lab coat. [This message has been edited by kikinoir (edited 09-26-2000).] IP: Logged |

I'm a biology grad student, so every year our friend's Halloween party attracts lots of semi-nerdy (but often really clever, well-done) costumes. Some from last year: parasitoid wasp (complete with ovipositor), long-horn beetle, pizza delivery-person with spider pizza... bob for apples! but do it outside. IP: Logged |

ooh, bobbing for apples. That's a fun idea... hopefully the weather will be good. I live in Minnesota, so sometimes there are blizzards, and other times we have bonfires. ![]() We were thinking of setting up some tiki torches and a cauldron (sp??) with dry ice in it outside, so we'd have a good atmosphere. Still trying to think of a costume... my boyfriend wants me to be a Powerpuff girl! IP: Logged |

oh, yes, definitely do the cauldron with dry ice. and let everyone know you'll be giving out prizes to the best costumes to encourage people to dress up. powerpuff girl sounds very cute ... which one would you be? would the boyfriend be mojo jojo? i like couple/group costumes; they're so cute. some really good costumes from last year: the Flinstones (Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty, and they did a REALLY good job of deciding who should be who; they also arrived in a Flintstones-style car that they'd made); the Little Prince (another group costume complete with good props); various very-elaborately-crafted bug costumes (as ginsu mentioned). ginsu and i went as pumpkinheads last year. we each bought these enormous styrofoam jack-o-lanterns from Target, cut out a hole for our heads, and plopped them on. since that didn't seem quite hilarious enough, we made ourselves disco pumpkinheads -- totally arbitrary, they just ended up being the funniest clothes we could find at the thrift shop. he wore an excellent powder blue leisure suit and i found a fabulously hideous jumpsuit. totally dumb costumes, but we made a pretty hilarious sight trying to walk next to each other with these big pumpkins on our heads (ginsu's was around two-and-a-half feet or so in diameter, mine about a foot). we're still hatching plans for this year's costume ... Definitely the hosts should be in costume. One of the best I ever did was Fred Flintstone. I took a couple of yards of orange material and sewed it into a tunic, went crazy with a wedge-shaped sponge & black paint, and made a raggy blue tie with some scraps from the fabric shop. It helped that much more that I am 6'3" and bear a striking resemblance to John Goodman. Group efforts are great--my apartment mates and I went as the Iwo Jima memorial one year--all in fatigues and one of us had a flag. Every time somebody yelled, "Semper Fi" we did the pose or had to drink. By the end of the night we had a hard time doing the pose and some of our attempts were downright unpatriotic, to say the least. That same year, our friends upstairs, who spent all their time in our apartment playing Nintendo 64 anyway, came to our party as famous works of art. Very good stuff. We had David, The Scream, God and Adam from the Sistine Chapel (a two-man effort, on "Fiat Lux" they had to do the pose or drink). The fifth guy in their apartment came as Picasso's Blue Period and offended several of our lady guests. In terms of food and drink: be a little freaky. Remember that food colouring doesn't change flavours. For that same "Iwo Jima" party we made a witch's brew--which was essentially your standard garbage pail punch with food dye to make it look nasty brownish-green. White grapes frozen in the middle of ice cubes start to look a lot like eyes when you're drinking, too. IP: Logged |

last year my fiancee and i had to come up with halloween costumes at the last minute (literally - we had 3 hours!) and dressed up as salt & pepper shakers. it was so easy & inexpensive to make and very creative - every one was complimenting us. i wore a white t-shirt, pants & sneakers (salt) - he wore black t-shirt, jeans & sneakers (pepper). we bought black, white & silver fabric which we cut into little squares (about 3" squares) and pinned all over our shirts & pants (salt got white & silver, pepper black & silver) - the silver really stands out against the black & white of the clothing so make sure you add more silver squares. then we painted a big S or P in silver paint on the front of our shirts. for shaker tops, we bought chefs hats at a costume store which we spray painted silver and then painted little black circles on the top (for the holes!) we stuffed them with newspaper to make them stand up straight. we had so much fun that night and were so comfortable in our costumes!!! what a cute idea, erial! i love the idea of going as a condiment/food item ... halloween's coming up in a couple of weeks now ... can't believe it's mid-october already. must start brainstorming about this year's costume. we were briefly entertaining the idea of going as fem-bots, complete with some sort of shooting breast capability, but between having to rig that up somehow, and make costumes, it just seemed like too much work. Well, the party planning is under way. We spent tons of money on the decorations, about $70 so far. My fave thing we got are the big black cauldrons... one we're going to fill with dry ice, and the other we're going to serve orange sherbert punch out of. So now I have no $ to spend on costume, food, etc. Luckily there's one more pay day until Halloween. So my new question is, where are we going to find dry ice? IP: Logged |

We had a huge Halloween party a couple years ago on a shoestring budget. Here are some of the things we did: made tombstones/graveyard out of carboard and set up in the yard. We took old clothes and stuffed them with leave and made them look like half buried people. We put old sheets over the furniture. definately put peeled grapes in the punch..they really do look like eyeballs. We rented psycho and had that playing on the TV and stuffed so old clothes and put a woman figure with her back turned in a chair watching the show. We filled the bathtub with epsom salts and red and black POWDER tempera paint and it looked really bloody. We bought a $2 clear shower curtain and sprayed red pain o it to look like blood. We took old paintings from the good will or ran off copies of old paintings/portraits and used old frames...then cut out the eyes and put in little battery operated flashing eyeballs and hung the pictures crooked. We had a jack o lantern carving contest where everyone brought a carved pumpkin and then they were voted on by ballot. You could also do a wicked drink contest and have everyone bring samples with the recipe and have them name their concoctions. For food we made deviled eggs but colored the yolk green or blue and made them into eyeballs by putting a sliced black olive on top. We also bought some of those jell-o molds that look like brains and hands and served up brains on platters of lettuce. I could go on! I am a marketing director for a mall and am in the process of planning a party for 800+ kids 12 and under so I really do a lot of research on this subject! Oh, I almost forgot...the best thing we did was take black thread and fishline and taped various pieces to the ceiling. People couldn't see it, but the thread feels really gross rubbing people's faces and we just died watching everyone wipe their faces every time they entered the room. My friend and I went as Xena Princess Warrior and Gabriel. IP: Logged |

that sounds like an awesome Halloween party, Scarah! such great ideas...but a heck of a lot of work. I think you can get dry ice at a grocery store...but you have to ask someone to get it from out back. IP: Logged |
