The newest issue of Martha Stewart (with all the blue egg cups on the cover) has an article on tea sandwiches, if you're still interested.

Here's my scone recipe, which I make about once a week:

2 c unsifted all-purpose flour
3 tsp baking powder
2 T sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 c butter (or margarine)
2 eggs, beaten
1/3 c milk
2 tsp granulated sugar

In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, 2 T sugar and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Reserve 1 T of the eggs for brushing the tops of the scones. Mix remainder of eggs with milk. Stir into flour mixture to make a stiff dough. Turn out onto lightly floured board and knead 2 or 3 times just until dough holds together in a ball. (Dough will be very sticky.) Divide into 2 parts. Shape each into a cake, about 6 inches in diameter, 1/2 inch thick. Place on ungreased cookie sheet (I usually line it with foil, because the sugar tends to make them stick). With knife, cut into 4 quarters, making 4 wedges out of each cake, but leave pieces in place. Brush top with reserved egg. Sprinkle with 2 tsp sugar. Bake at 400 degrees F for 15 - 20 minutes or until golden.

They are delightful with lots of butter and strawberry jam. Yum....

Stash makes a tea called licorice spice that is very good...and naturally sweet too. Don't let the name fool you, it really doesn't taste like licorice at all!

I've learned that if you keep everything really cold (like putting everything, including the bowl and the spoon and the measuring cups, into the fridge for a few minutes before you start to mix everything together) actually helps them to rise and prevents them from getting tooooo brown.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the licorice spice tip, Pistachio. Sounds like exactly what I'm looking for! (Glad it's not too licorice candyish. Not a fan ... although, strangely enough, I like anise and fennel.)

Okay, I have been battling this nasty stomach virus for about 10 days now. I tried this method last night because I find the regular ginger tea a little too overwhelming, especially when I am nauseous because of the strong smell. I bought the crystallized ginger and dropped several pieces in the water. I let it steep for about 3 minutes and it still just tasted like water so I let it go for a while longer. It finally flavored it barely, but it was really, really weak. So, did I do something wrong... is there a secret trick to this that I missed? I really want this to work. I love ginger and anything to avoid drinking bottles of Pepto would be lovely.

chopping the pieces up helps if it is not very strong. Or add more ginger and super hot water to help melt the sugar and release the gingery goodness.

I kind of squash the ginger around in the water with a back of a spoon too to get out more of the flavor.

I'll have to try that. I've tried a raspberry/oatmeal recipe the other day, but the scones were a little bit denser than I expected. I froze half of it in individual portions (in fact, I froze the whole "cake" for 2 hours, then cut it into wedges and wrapped them in aluminium paper) so that I can now have just one or two fresh scones anytime I want.

I've never even thought to freeze them! They usually all get eaten in one sitting, and they take like 20 minutes to make. Mmmmmm.

God, I'm going to have to go make scones now...

B]

Just to add that I froze them uncooked. Afterwards, I just pop them in the oven for about 20 minutes. I have to admit that I found the idea on the Martha Stewart web site.

This has always been one of my favorites. Trader Joe's sells one that tastes exactly the same as the Stash. I can't remember the exact name they call it, but it does have to word licorice in it and that is really all you need to know to find it.

My tea of the moment is spiced chai, with a bit of honey and some half and half. It tastes like pumpkin pie. Very soothing, and good cold too!

I also like fruit teas.
The strangest tea I have ever had was chocolate mint tea. I haven't been able to find it again though.

Lemon & Ginger (homemade)sometimes with honey depends on how sweet the lemon is. Next time I'm trying lime.

Green tea with sushi.

I really like Irish tea brands(Bewleys, Lyons gold etc)as the Australian ones don't tend to brew up as strong.

I rely on travellers to bring me a big bag of tea bags when they come over.

Also, I want to know if crowjoy really did pass out from her post-baby Morning Thunder.

Mmmmm...tea...nothing like a nice hot cuppa. I go from one extreme to another--I drink either funky herbal flavors like Yogi tea [I keep the detox type at work, it's a nice pick-me-up and unlike black teas, I can drink it on an empty stomach without feeling yucky from the tannins] or Celestial Seasonings "Extra" teas, like Sleepytime Extra [with valerian or kava kava or some such nonsense] or...I drink straight-up no frills black tea--preferably of the Irish variety. The family favorite is Barry's Gold Label, and I personally think it's the best of its kind...but it's sometimes hard to find in the US. I stock up whenever I come upon an import shop that carries it.

And...ok...I will admit a weakness for the occasional non-fat Chai Latte from Mega-Huge National Coffee Chain That Shall Remain Nameless Since They Certainly Don't Need More Publicity [There's no less than 4 of 'em within about a 2 block radius in my local downtown area.]Anyway. Moving on.

I love Barry's Gold Label. I got hooked on it when I did a year abroad in Dublin during college. It's so yummy. I stock up whenever I can find it too.

When I'm not drinking Barry's, I like Earl Grey, English Breakfast, or Irish Breakfast. If I'm just buying something at the grocery store, I'll usually buy Twinings. My boyfriend likes to order from Tealuxe, which has some great bulk teas. We bought a new teapot recently, and we're breaking it in.

I love english breakfast and D1lmah black tea. It just has a beautiful flavour. I drink peppermint tea after a big, filling meal (so, nearly every night).

I am currently craving tea - thanks to this thread!
I love your standard black teas. Irish breakfast, english breakfast, earl gray - all with a smidge of milk.

I'm not a big herbal fan - but have tried to start drinking green tea with bergemot - so it tastes more like earl gray. That I can handle.
But the problem is - the only way I can make tea at the office is with that boiling water spout - and I can never remember to keep milk at the office to add to the coffee. So now I'm craving it - and hoping someone wanders across the street to the 'way too big and way too pricey' coffee chain across the street for a cuppa.
It certainly would be nice...

If you drink a lot of tea at work [or you'd like to have a decent cup now and then] it might be worth investing in an electric kettle. I had one when I was living on campus in college, and it was invaluble [also good for heating ramen noodles...] and cheap [no more than $20]. A cuppa made with hot water just can not compare to a proper cuppa made with boiling water.

Well, feel free to have them send me a $5 certificate whenever the mood strikes you.....

I've been very happy with a breakfast blend (can't remember the exact name right now) that I got at Fortnum & Mason's last year when I went to London. It's almost gone now, gosh darn it. Maybe another London vacation is in order...

You can order samples for $1, which is awesome. They are strictly loose leaf, which may not appeal to some. I'm drinking Irish Breakfast, mostly, and experimenting with the fabulous $1 samples for more favorites.

mmm, tea! I always have tons of it on hand. I love so many kinds: Earl Grey, Lady Grey, English Breakfast, Chai tea - but most commonly I drink good old Red Rose (orange pekoe). I also love lemon ginger tea, green tea (especially with jasmine), camomile, peppermint, etc. Usually I go with Tw!nings brand or just L!pton.

When I lived in residence, our meal hall was closed between meals and in the evenings, but there was unlimited tea and supplies available to us - so we all got to adore tea and got in the habit of having little tea breaks. Now it's a soothing daily thing for me.

The only teas I don't really like are the really fruity herbal ones. I don't mind black tea with fruit flavour - I have a raspberry flavoured black tea which I really like - but I don't like apple tea, cranberry, cherry or what have you. It tastes too much like warm juice for me.

I used to have a co-worker whose family lived in Nepal who made amazing, amazing chai spiced tea from scratch - too bad I don't remember the recipe!

Bubble tea is good too

This is kind of a tea question. I have an electric kettle. It doesn't have any way to open it - you pour the water down the spout & that's all. So - do I ever have to clean it? Cuz I noticed the water for my tea tastes a little funny these days and I wonder if that has something to do with it?
