So, I have strep throat and have been living off of Progresso soup, orange juice, and peppermint tea for almost a week. I am so bored with this menu, but can't really deal with normal food either. Any good ideas for some easy feel-better food that might be a change of pace? Also, what food do you all crave when you're sick? Me, I miss my grandmother's homemade chicken stock. She kept it frozen in little jars and always broght some over when anyone in our house was sick... canned soup is just not the same at all.

I crave apple sauce when I'm sick, preferably homemade and slightly tart (of course, you can always get the jarred stuff too). And definitely homemade soup, especially anything with chicken broth (chicken noodle, chicken barley, chicken rice, you get the picture). All made by someone who loves you, of course.

How about some nice bowls of Asian-style noodle soup? Get some canned chicken broth, add veggies (I like baby bok choy/napa cabbage, scallions, mushrooms), cook up some linguini or other noodle-like pasta and add that to the soup. Or miso soup would be a nice change of pace from the Progresso.

hope you feel better soon, bee!

sherbet, popsicles, and the like are nice, because the coldness helps bring down the swelling in your tonsils.

Try adding some chilies to your soup to help clear congestion. You should only drink clear juices. My doctor told me that oj can help form mucus. Drink grape juice and apple juice instead.

Thanks for the suggestions! Applesauce sounds good and I never knew about not drinking OJ (I always thought it was good because it has vitamin C) I'll have to switch. Well, I'm going back to sleep now.

cranberry juice might be a good alternative to oj, since it's high in vit C and shouldn't induce mucous formation like oj.

tea is great, too...I especially like peppermint...it feels soothing in your throat.

poor bee.

I made a great corn soup last time I had a nasty cold (yummy, huh epi - he tasted it). Plenty of coriander and cumin, and it was both comfort food and head-clearing.

Email me at catber@hotmail.com if you want the recipe.

Potato soup is very southing. Especially if you have had a stomach bug. My mom made it by peeling and slicing potatoes and boiling them 'til soft. Then drain the water and add milk and butter. Its pretty much like mashed potatoes just lumpier and with more liquid. I have also boiled the potatoes in chicken broth instead of water which is very good.

Another dish for the germ-challenged, make toast and just cover it with prepared cream of chicken soup (canned). It sounds yucky, but is actually very good even if you aren't sick since I am one of those people who believes that cream of chicken soup cannot be eaten plain. It can either be over toast or cooked with.

a really good dessert from the philippines (if the doctor lets you eat cold stuff) is mais con hielo. spanish for, well, corn with ice. you just need some crushed ice and sweet corn (canned creamed corn will work). put 'em in a tall glass. pour a little milk on top and add a little sugar, and mix everything together. it might sound weird but it's really pretty good.

i love tea, and aside from peppermint i drink ginger tea which is really helpful.

Do you think you could get down a fruit smoothie maybe? Nutritious and easy to get down.
I would also make yourself a nice cup of tea w/extra lemon and honey. Now I know that's not FOOD, but it will help that sore throat.
What about something like macaroni and cheese, or egg noodles w/butter? Stay away from acidic things like tomato sauce, or things that hurt to swallow (Obviously!)
Feel better soon, fluffygurl!

I crave Hot and Sour soup when I'm sick. It works wonders to clear up the sinuses. Also, horseradish, wasabi and chili peppers are awesome for colds. My theory is that they help you sweat out all the sickly germs.

Feel better soon.

ETA: A good way to help your throat feel better is to put a few (2-3) drops of tea tree oil in a tablespoon of honey. The honey coats the throat, and the tea tree oil acts as an antiseptic.

big hugs, sweetie! I've been suffering this week with a cold, and have been living off toast and veggie soup. I find that, when you're in one of those moods for a bit of aimless pottering around the kitchen, make broth! obviously, this is when you're well, but get a bunch of veggies (onion, leek, carrot, celery, garlic) and simmer for a couple of hours, then strain and freeze in 1-pint containers. Then, when you're ill, just defrost and heat up with some veggies and noodles and you have the best soup ever! hope you're feeling better soon ::hugs::

My trick for a sore throat and general ickiness is to combine lemon juice, hot water, honey and a shot of whatever liquor is in the house - preferably brandy. Works like a charm to soothe the throat (you could leave out the lemon if your throat is really sore) and also helps you get some rest because of the booze!

Get well soon!

I run into this post after being sick in bed for 2 days- and now it's midnight on the second day and I'm wide awake...

When I'm sick I like all sorts of herbal teas with honey- I always keep peppermint and chamomile around. Depending on how I'm sick depends on what I want to eat. Lemon Sorbet is good for a sore throat. And good old jello (yes I know what's in it, but I still like it) is good for everything. If you are a little weary of old fashoned jello, you can get some seaweed thickened substitute at health food stores which are a close subsitiute in the pre made varieties (which I can't eat because I'm allergic to apples) and a little farther away substitute in the boxed varieties. If it's a stomach upset I like popcorn- well I always like popcorn, but it doesn't usually upset my stomach when I am sick. Crackers, tomato soup and so on also help. Right now I'm drinking hot chocolate since my stomach has settled down.

(I know about the phelmy stuff, I was a voice major in college. One of my professors once gave me a talking to about how to talk above the sore throat to keep from damaging my voice, scary)

Well I did manage to get down some pureed melon with honey and I made my potato and sweetcorn soup which yes is baby food as well. I think Im regressing back to childhood! I share a collective hug with all the sick digsters out there and hope that we all feel better soon. I think I will be ingesting yet more soup today and I will have to try that honey and tea tree oil trick. Greta do you have a recipe for that hot and sour soup?

For really bad sore throats when I can't swallow, but think I ought to be eating something, I eat baby cereal, the stuff that comes in cans and says '1-3 months' on the label. Sometimes I add a bit of glucose for energy.

Try slippery elm tea, if you can get it. Or if you're close to a Chinatown, there's nothing better than Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa - it looks like disgusting black tar in the bottle, but it's the most incredible, wonderful, soothing thing. It's mild enough to be taken by healthy folks too - I used to have a dorm-mate who took it every day. You can take it plain, or stirred into hot water.

And I've just been caught by the cold that's been chasing me all week, so I'm off to get me a spoonful of Pei Pa Koa in hot water.

I'll post a recipe for rice porridge when I'm feeling more up to it.

Miso soup! I get the wierdest cravings for miso soup when I'm sick.... and the tofu is soft enough it probably wouldn't kill your throat, fluff. I made it for boyfriend when his tonsils were so swollen he could barely breathe.

I usually crave ramen noodles when I'm sick. Also, hot chocolate and butter toast (well, I crave butter toast all the time right now).

My mom used me make me drink hot water with a shot of whisky and some honey. It really did make the throat feel better. I was thinking maybe add the whisky to hot tea to get some antioxidants with your booze.

Also, to respond to what greta said about spicey foods: my microbiology professor swore by eating spicey foods when she was sick because it made you sweat to break any sort of fever.

Smiles! If I'm feeling miserable dont want to eat anything, but I can actually keep food down, this is what I want. It's just elbow macaroni, chopped hot dogs, and a can of condensed tomato soup all mixed together. I dont do hot or spicy foods even when I am feeling ok, but when I am sick I dont want anything with flavor at all. Except Smiles. Love me some smiles.

I never feel like eating when I'm really sick - I think cold/flu medicine takes away my appetite. (Pity you can't just take it all the time....) Anyway, when I don't have an appetite, I just drink Slim-Fast. I feel like I'm still getting some vitamins, and I don't have to chew/swallow anything solid. Of course, if you're really congested, you might not wanna drink milk. I drink skim, tho, so it's not very thick and it doesn't bother me when I'm sick.

Also, I just remembered Yogi Tea India Spice Tea is very good and spicy and will clear you right out, as well as feel good on your throat. I wouldn't drink it on an upset stomach though, as it's very spicy and peppery.

My mom always gave me plain table crackers with flat ginger ale for an upset stomach. Bread or crackers soak up some of the acid in your stomach.

My strategy for recovering from an upset stomach is as follows:
- never force yourself to eat if you're not hungry. If you feel ill at any point, stop eating and revert to step 1.

1- start with water, cool but not cold, in tiny sips
2- then flat lemon soda and herbal tea (ginger and mint are good)
3- then canned fruit (it has to be canned... easier to digest) or apple puree and wheat thin crackers
4- then maybe plain white rice, pasta with butter, white bread without the crusts. Some easy to digest carbs to get some calories in my system.

By then, I usually start feeling a little bit better, so I wash my hair, get dressed up, put on some rouge to feel healthy, and have a normal light meal. Avoid dairy, greasy food, acid food for a while.
