A friend of mine has this little pillow-like thing filled with herbs and i think beans that she is able to heat up in the microwave and use to soothe her stomachaches and cramps and the like. I was looking at them at the store and they run about $40 for the size she has. I can't see spending that much money for something i know i can make for $5 or $10. I know how to make the actual pillow, but the question is, what is it filled with?? Hers smelled like lavender and felt like it was filled with beans or rice.. is this correct? What type of beans should i use? Anyone make these or know of a place where i could get the recipe? Thanks!! (note: sorry if this is a repost to any past topic.. i couldnt find a record of it.) :-D IP: Logged |

I've made them with rice -- not quick cooking, the bagged stuff that takes FOREVER to cook. Imade them as in-law gifts 3 years ago, and my MIL STILL uses hers. You could scent with dried lavender,I assume, but I used essential oils. I'm not sure if it still smells good, because my MIL is always sitting on it when we visit. IP: Logged |

flax seeds work well too because they're round. IP: Logged |

i've always made them with rice. the one i use now is just a tube sock--classy, i know. you could make yours with a pocket on the outside to put the lavender or whatever in, then when the smell wears off you could put in more. IP: Logged |

I make mine with rice, and dried lavender and eucalyptus for fragrance. IP: Logged |

I use rice - I usually put the rice in cotton, and I've made a few slightly larger (open) fleece - envelopes? - to ptu the heated rice bags in - so much softer. My idea for this winter is to create small rice bags that can slip into (customized) slippers - or, to sew fleece socks that can be microwaved with small rows of rice in them. Peppermint essential oils work too, but aren't as soothing. IP: Logged |

I just wanted to say that polly made me one of these for xmas and it's, like, my FAVORITE THING EVER. It's my cramp/migraine/hangover/back pain buddy. IP: Logged |

you can also put them in the freezer for a cool pack. it's not freezing cold like ice, so i like it a lot better. it feels great on your eyes when you're tired. IP: Logged |

I have a lavender scented rice bag but lately I have noticed that the smell is a little 'off' when I heat it up. Maybe I burned it? Is there any way to save it, to make it smell yummy again? IP: Logged |

You can use rice or wheat - visit a feedstore and buy some from them. When you heat them up, put a cup of water in the microwave with the bag. If you keep heating it up and repeat, you will dry the stuff out and risk a fire. Never ever put EOs on the bags before reheating - if it smells off, get a new one as the filling may have broken down, be growing mould, be rotting or be being eaten... you can recycle the bag of course! These sound so nice! Never thought of making anything like that for myself. I'll add it to my huge list of craft projects that I want to do. IP: Logged |

here's where you can find instructions on how to make one...
fleece works just as well as cotton for the cover and is much softer. believe it or not, some vacuum cleaner repair places actually carry some interesting potpouri mixes for vacuum bags that you can use inside these neck pillows - pre-mixed. (i love the hot apple pie one). happy crafting! zhemi IP: Logged |
