Seeing as Christmas is officially less than 6 months away, I thought I would see what everyone has planned to make this year. Last year I did the spa thing with homemade bath bombs, bath salts, bath tea, etc. I was just browsing old topics, but I have made most of the things in the past. Anyone have any new, exciting, creative ideas for Christmas gifts this year?? [This message has been edited by Henna73 (edited 06-26-2003).] IP: Logged |

I'm already worried about Christmas this year. I'm moving pretty far away from all of my friends and family soon. Christmas will be extra-special this year when I come back to visit. BUT... by being away, gift ideas are going to be very difficult. I'd love to make things for people. I wouldn't have to worry about hiding works in progress! Then, for an extra challenge, I'm going to be on my tightest budget ever!! I've learned how to crochet and knit this summer. I think it would be great to use my new skills but I'm not *that* good. I'm considering making afghans or something of the sort. IP: Logged |

quote: Using the new skills you've learned to make gifts is a great idea, but I'd recommend not doing afghans. compared to smaller stuff like hats and scarves, they take a lot more yarn (and therefore more $), and a lot longer to make. So if you're planning on making more than one or two gifts, I'd go with smaller stuff. If you're worried about wearable stuff being too complicated, scarves can be just as simple as afghans, just smaller. IP: Logged |

I was planning on making some photo albums since I'm learning book making. I also thought I'd make a picture book for Flynn. That's all I've thought of so far. IP: Logged |

(if any of you have ever seen The Fast Show, you'll understand that...if not, I'm sorry) Yeh, I was thinking of making some of my friends little things such as cookies, truffles..etc and putting them in nice packages (got the idea, all I gotta do now is learn how to cook And er...what's bath tea? I really thought that it would be at least September before this topic was broached again. I'm with Angiedee on the knitting and crocheting. Things I'm going to knit for people Finger puppets, socks, hair-ties, scarves and beanies. It will make the postage pretty cheap. They will end up being really good quality because of the wool I'll be putting into it. I might even knit some pot scrubs. Don't even ask for patterns as I don't have the links handy but knitty.com is the bible. IP: Logged |

Ok, Ok, I know it was early but I came across some half finished Christmas gifts from last year and thought maybe I could get inspired EARLY this year! The bath tea is oatmeal, sea salt and herbs placed in a large tea bag that you hang over your faucet as you run the bath. That way you don't have a lot of little dried herbs and such floating around in the tub! IP: Logged |

Actually, it's a pretty good idea to start makin' Christmas stuff now even though it sounds ridiculous. My friends & family all wanted scarves when I started knitting in January, but I was just a beginner and by the time MY first scarf was done, it was getting to warm! So I think I might just start on some hats, scarves, maybe embroider some stuff a la sublimestitching.com IP: Logged |

Shadowhand- I get the fast show joke, hee hee!!! :-) Here is the world's best, foolproof cookie recipe. It's easy and makes loads in one go. things to note- they don't spread much, put the mix about 1.5inches apart on your baking sheet. Also, let them cool for at least 5 minutes before you even try and transfer them to a cooling rack- they are VERY soft when straight from the oven. 5am COOKIES (so called because I often make them at 5am when I've been up all night at sleepovers etc...!) The only reason I think about Christmas in June is because Christmas is my mother's half-birthday (the time of year when you turn x and a half). (My friends and I figured those out all one year, though I strongly suspect we are past the age where half-birthdays have any meaning. Although I like my half-birthday as it is such an easy date: New Years Day (yes, that does match up to July 2)) IP: Logged |

I think it's a very cool idea - I don't think we did that when we were younger. --- back to topic --- Bake-mixes, bath-suff of all sorts, and other such usefulness for people next christmas. Thankfully I don't have all that many people to give presents to. IP: Logged |

I knitted alpaca mittens for all the ladies and beanies for the guys last xmas, this year i think I may knit up some bulky warm slipper/socks from the Lion Brand Yarn free pattern that I can't find the link to right now. They are bulky so I am not planning to worry too much about the sizes. IP: Logged |

Today I saw something called Quickie Stickies. It's a pad of cute, empowering notes with cartoon pictures on them and post-it sticky on the back. I was thinking this could be a fun gift to make. I know you can have stacks of paper turned into a pad (I think at copy centers), but I'm not sure about getting the restickable glue on the back. Any ideas about that? IP: Logged |

This is scary, but my Christmas presents are almost DONE. But let me explain that this is only because what they are are plants (from cuttings) in terra cotta pots that I have painted (w/terra cotta paints). So in order for them to be hardy and beautiful in time for Christmas, I had to get them done now. And lucky for me, I get to lug them ALL with me next month when I move. IP: Logged |

I have also begun to make xmas presents..I want to make all homemade ones, so I know I need to start now. I was thinking for my husband and other young guys (his brother etc.) I was going to make a bunch of boxers out of really cool fabrics. I saw the most beautiful quilts at urban outfitters, they were very simple big all sqaure quilts, but they used a mixture of neat fabrics, like crushed velvets, asian print silks, etc. I am going to try and find lots of pretty fabric clothing for cheap at yardsales and make 2-3 quilts for presents. I find it is so much easier to figure out things to make for girls.. like hair items, skirts, purses but i always get so stumped on the guys..last year I made scarves.. anyhow for the kids i am makign stuffed funky animals..with big silly eyes etc. I was quite happy to see this thread

I've started. I've spend about 40.00 on really nice soft yarn (it was on sale!) and I'm making a very special blanket/throw for my newlywed best friend and her husband. (it will be big enough to share and a special gift for a special 1st Christmas) and then, I'm making a second one for another good friend of mine. Since I will be living far away from home something nice and handmade seemed like the way to go. I tried to find some new knitting needles today... crazy! There were only about 3 pairs left on the shelf!! I think everyone is starting Christmas knitting right now! IP: Logged |

I don't celebrate christmas. I celebrate life. I'll be sending scarves I knitted when things start to cool down, and vegan sweets randomly. I'm sending summer hats and charm braclettes to my mum & sis soon.

i'm reusing old (adult sized) fleeces to make little jackets for my pint sized niece and nephew and i think i'll try to make some puppets or wall art for their room. i have some quilts and duvet covers i made and don't use that i think i will gift to my sisters. this will be the tightest holiday budget yet, so i'm trying to start early and do creative things on as little as possible. i did a bunch of bath stuff last year and am trying to resist the urge to repeat that success. baking and putting cookies, etc. in cool containers sounds like a great idea, too. thank you!! I think I have my office presents figured out. I'm going to make geeky magnetic poetry, and package it sort of like this: http://www.gerberadesigns.com/diy_tins_cd_poetry.htm I think I'm also going to make a help desk bingo game with some of the frequent frustrating calls we get. All this is inspired by the wonder that is magnetic paper, available at your local office store. Coolest stuff ever! IP: Logged |

and indiechickuk i make a similar chocolate cookie for xmas every year but it has a little more cocoa in it and i put peanut butter chips in them.. oohh man they are heaven, my fave cookie. chewy and yummy. always go first at cookie swaps. this year my mom and i learned to knit and are doing the scarf thing, but with that fun fur/ eyelash yarn stuff. i know its huge everywhere, but is fairly new here.. that is till all the grammas at the craft store see it and go nuts. im also making my chocolate mousies (cant have enough chocolate) i made them last year too. you take a marachino cherry (with long stem on it) and dip it in chocolate (melted semi sweet) lay it down on parchment paper (so the string makes the tail) stick 2 almond slivers in front for ears and pipe little eyes and whiskers on with melted white chocolate!! waahaa!! so cute.. cute enough to eat !! chomp! Coal? Cheap alternative. Tell everyone they've been BAAAAAD! LOL Seriously, though... I'd go to the library and check out some children's books about Christmas in different cultures. There might even be craft ideas in them! IP: Logged |

Alright, I've been inspired by my readings lately to have a thrifty Christmas this year. After all, it IS all about the spirit, right? Anyway, I pretty much have my list figured out for my immediate family (plus one): Brother: Strongbad t-shirt- this will be my only "commercial" item Sister: Animae magazines scrounged from bookstore dumpster; marble magnets featuring Chinese characters Mother: Burned CD, scented potholders (potholders with inner pockets that contain a spice mix; the spices release scent when warm) Dad: Burned Cd, plus something else I could make- haven't decided yet Friend- a super cute Finding Nemo movie poster, again scrounged from a dumpster (yes, it is in perfect condition) The most personal and fun part will be the packaging. For my mother's CD, I am going to decorate the case with dried cuttings from her mother's garden (my grandma died this last Jan). For my father, I think I'll find a pic. of us two and use it as a cover. In order to reduce waste, I am planning on "wrapping" all the presents in resusable drawstring bags- which, of course, I have to figure out how to make myself. If anyone can help me on that one, let me know! [This message has been edited by amandafaith (edited 08-09-2003).] IP: Logged |

Oh wow, a drawstring bag is the easiest, but I hadn't thought of using them. You're so clever! So you just take two pieces of fabric, whatever size you want your bag to be, and sew them, front to front, on three sides. Then make a little casing by folding down the fourth side and sewing all the way around. Then put your string or ribbon on a safety pin and push it through the casing. Good luck! IP: Logged |

This weekend I made some little purses out of old jeans for my 3 cousins and my niece. Each side of the purses are one side of the butt of the jeans, including the back pocket... if that makes sense. For the straps I used some fancy ribbon and a purple boa for my niece's. They were really easy and each one cost less than $2 to make (I used yard sale jeans). I also cut out a bunch of really great photos from a magazine of girls from the Miss Teen Texas pageant. They're so great both on an arsty and a kitsch level. I'm going to decoupage those onto a box and then fill it with some DIY pampering stuff for one of my girlfriends (probably including the famed Digs brown sugar scrub I'm sure). IP: Logged |
