I got some bigger ones in the craft section of the Wal-Mart, but when I tried them they were too big to see the pictures through. (You are talking about the kind you glue the pix on, right??) But they were oddly shaped, kinda like little pyramids almost. Also the first time around, I got small and big, and didn't realize that though they were clear, they had this iridescent crap on them so you couldn't really see through them too well - I had to go through and pick out the clearest ones, which wasn't too many of them. Beware the iridescence.

Most of my friends are swing dancers, and we all have a habit of carrying our dance shoes in our bags. So I took a shoebag that I've used for years and copied it for my friends. For the sushi lovers, the bag is half sushi print and half black cordoroy. For the others, it is half jazz print and half cordoroy. Then I embroidered their names (with my mom's awesome Pfaff machines) on the black part of the bag so they won't get mixed up.

That's a great idea! I wanted to do something similar for the girls I run with to stash their running shoes/clothes in. Oh, the things I'll make when I get a working sewing machine...

What is this Pfaff machine you speak of that can embroider names?? This sounds like it would make my life 150% happier. Please tell me more about it! I would embroider my name and initials on every item of clothing I own!

Arg, computer ate my whole post.

Ok, to recap: Here are the puppets

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/crowjoy/album?.dir=/Puppets

And I also have a list of food gifts from the Parenting magazine this month:

Pretzel rods coated with melted candy chips or chocolate, then decorated with sprinkles, etc. (I've also seen oreos and other packaged cookies done this way.)
Mint hot chocolate in a jar
Snowflakes made from pie crust with cinnamon and sugar
Mmm, roasted almonds with sugary coating
Instant cookie kit with unbaked sugar dough, cutters and sprinkles

I still have a few puppets to make and I need to work on Mander's fleece blankie... as in get the fleece but we're close, realll close. I can't thank Henna enough for starting me thinking so early.

Ahh ha! Everyone thought I was crazy to start so early. Well, I'm almost done with my holiday gifts. Who's the one laughing now?!?!?

I made my mom two small quilt hangings and some fire starters. The fire starters are my herb stems from this summer dried and tied with homemade scented paper, twigs and twine. She loves her new fireplace, but just has issues starting the fire!

I also made some stepping stones for the aunts. This weekend I am making some lavendar bath salts from my home grown lavendar. Then I should be done with my DIY gifts. I need to put a few fruit baskets together, but I will wait unitl the week of Christmas to do that. Then, I only have a few other gifts to buy.

ooh, here's another idea: a mojito kit:

1 small bottle of mint-infused simple syrup
1 small bottle of lemon-infused rum (optional)
1 lime or lime syrup
bottle of club soda
2 highball glasses

...all in a tropically-decorated gift basket.

SB (who says to herself, I could use a mojito...at 11:30 in the morning! yikes!)

Hi Emcarb,

Thanks! I used the Ruff-n-Ready and only decorated the rough side. Here's a breakdown of the materials:

- Shrinky Dinks Ruff-n-Ready Paper
- Fine Line Black Sharpie
- Crayola Colored Pencils
- Cat Images I had from another project
- A Micro Hole Punch

That's what I use. I usually color one side, and then outline the other side with a thin sharpie for sort of a 3D effect (as recommended by the website I linked somewhere). It makes it look like the outline is "floating" above the image. Very cool. I like the kitties you used. They're sort of retro.

Wow. Iron-ons are great. I think I wrote them off back when my grandma would get sheets with cats or something on them and make me weird t-shirts. But after I read yam's post about the scarves with iron-on monograms, I was newly inspired. Today I made two stockings and used iron-on letters to add the names. They are really cute ones that look like I used a bedazzler or something to make the letters out oh rhinstones. Then, I made a couple of no-sew scarves with some of the leftover fabric and monogrammed them too. Yay!

After seeing them advertised in a magazine (at a cost of $24 for 3) - I am making scented sachets (for a cost of more like $3 for 24).
I found some silk at the fabric store - cut it into 4.5 inch squares (for a 1/4 inch seam) - put two squares together - sewed them inside out, leaving one side open - filled with potpourri - sewed that up - then packaged with a simple ribbon.
It was too snowy today to do anything but stay inside and craft.

Today I made:

  • 7 fleece hats (1 was for me, the test one)
  • 6 fleece scarves
  • 3 sets of holiday wine charms using cool glass beads in Christmas shapes
  • 3 sets regular wine charms

And yesterday I made sets of the cards we made a while back with the photos of stuff around town. So wooo! Got some stuff marked off my list finally! And I am BEAT now. Gah.

I took some photos so maybe I'll post those soon.

Thanks!

For the hats, I started following the intructions that SB posted a link to (here), but I ended up adapting them slightly. Here's what I did:

1. Measure fleece to 13" for hat length, and approx. 23" (adjust to your head size) for circumference. Cut fabric. Fold fabric in half lengthwise and cut in half (so you should end up with 2 pieces that are about 11 1/2" x 13").

2. Sew along both 13" lengths.

3. Sew along one 11 1/2" length.

4. Keeping hat inside out, trim away excess seam. (Since the brim will be turned up, you don't want excess seams showing.)

5. With hat still inside out, align seams so that they are one on top of the other. The tips should form triangles at the top.

6. Stitch a single row across the top of the triangle, about 1/4-1/2" down. Trim away excess seam.

7. Turn hat right side out. Fold up seam and hem around the brim. Trim away excess seam.

8. To create a pom-pom, see instructions on Martha site above.

9. Voila! You're done. To wear, the brim is folded upwards.

Does anyone have a unique idea for a center piece for Christmas? My husband and I host Christmas Eve and every year so far I have made the center piece. I have had:

Floating candles in various containers
Canning jars full of pine and cranberries
Bowls of lemons and limes
Pitcher full of glass ball ornaments
Pinecones and pine boughs
Pillar candles wrapped with candy canes

Any new, exciting ideas?

Yeesh, once again you are too far ahead Henna! At least I have everything out of the attic, even if I haven't looked at it yet.
I might use ball ornaments on top of a collection of candle holders or mounded up on a pedestal plate. Or maybe a tall wide mouthed vase with long twigs, spray painted and maybe glittered? with ornaments around the base or inside the vase? Or maybe grape vine wound around wire in a vaguely evergreen shape, spraypainted gold and with lights inside?

What about hanging beaded snowflake ornaments from your light fixture or from the ceiling in a cluster above the table. Hang them at varying lengths from clear thread, as if it's really snowing, and maybe scatter some around the table as little gifts for your guests.

Emcarb, I like the snowflake ideal. I was also thinking about your monograms and making those as place setting markers. Keep the ideas coming, maybe I can use other ideas other places!

I love how the pictures start popping up as the big day approaches.

Unfortunately, the holiday plateau has hit the crowjoy household. I threw everything down from the attic but there it sits. I have *mostly* everything done but with a few glaring exceptions, most of whom need to be mailed with their family's stuff and I have no ideas. What do y'all make for boys? I need crafted gifts for 3 in the immediate near term and probably 2 more before it's all over. It's hard! Only 1 of them might like bath goodies, if ya know what I mean.

And did I mention you can print postage at home and hand your boxes to the mail carrier? This thrilled me initially but it's starting to feel like pressure. I need to box some stuff up today so I feel like I've done something.

You can see them at www.pfaff.com. They cost a small fortune, and require a computer for most stuff, but my mom being the ultimate crafty person has two. It's like a sewing factory in there. I haven't dropped the cash on one (and I'm not likely to) but they are amazing.

I am so glad I found this topic! I was about to go crazy trying to buy gifts and now I've started making them.

I got started with the marble magnets last night. It is fun, and while it's the hot craft now I don't think most of my friends and family will have them.

I didn't realize until I started how much the glass would magnify the images. The only thing is that I think I should go back and look for the silicon glue; the Uhu mosaic glue I got is noxious.

At Michael's, they had wooden trays on sale, so I bought a few to decorate later. Thanks for all the ideas; I'm so excited to be making gifts this year!

I have family members who are getting computers this month, but won't have high speed internet access (at least for awhile).
I'm burning a CD (for each) with popular free (and not so free) software, so their set-up goes a little faster.

Here's an initial list:
AOL IM and Trillian
Ad Aware, Pop Up Stopper, Spoybot
WinZip
WinAmp
Google Toolbar
RealPlayer - Free
Adobe Acrobat (full)
pics of family and friends for their desktop, screensaver
some songs (in MP3 format) to listen to
Helpful Bookmarks (create by making them in your browser as favorites, then export that file, and reimport into their browser on their machine)

I recently jumped onto the marble magnet bandwagon, and those things aren't as easy as they look! First, cutting down my pics so they wouldn't get pixelized kinda sucked, then I kept ending up with glue spots all over. Phew i'm tired from those!!!
I'm also going to attempt to knit my soon-to-be father in law a scarf. Between all that and christmas cards it looks like an exhausting crafy christmas :P

When I first tried to do them, I ran into trouble, too. I found that the pictures were always ruined by the glue. I just started painting the flat side of mine with acrylic paint after that, and I find that I like this method much better. I just do little swirls, starts, dots, initials, etc... Just cover the whole back with paint, then attach your magnet right to the painted back. That was easier for me to maneuver.
