About those iron-on monograms, do you think they'll really stay on permanently? Through washing and everything Well, the package claims they will. I know I don't wash my scarves very often anyhow. IP: Logged |

It only took nearly forever to get around to starting it... but, this weekend I made two of those no-sew reversible fleece blankets!!!! They were really pretty easy and they turned out really well. They're soooo soft. I might even end up making one for myself! Next project: painting plain wood photo frames to make them interesting and fun. I can hardly wait!!

Ok, I am broke and it's almost Thanksgiving and I have to start SERIOUSLY shopping/crafting as I have, like, one present already done. I am having heart palpitations and shortness of breath just thinking about it........ IP: Logged |

bekkaboo, i'm with you! i was so eager to get started MONTHS ago, and it just never went anywhere. now, i've got a few crafty ideas and materials, but don't have any finished gifts in hand and i have a whole lot of people that i don't know what to do for them. family i can work out...but what to do for S! i think i shot myself in the foot when i did such a cool birthday present in october. expectations are riding HIGH. and i have no ideas. I have NO ideas for my man either, he is MISERABLE to buy for. He's so picky about generic stuff like clothes and movies that I dare not pick out any for him, and gift certificates seem like a cop-out. Everything else that I know he likes are ridiculously expensive electronics or accessories for said electronics, and I just don't have the funds. I'm thinking of maybe buying him movies on DVD that he already has on VHS. He always spends WAY too much $$ on me so the pressure's on...I always feel like an ass at Christmas cause I can't spend as much on him as he does on me. But he always uses his credit cards at Christmas, and I don't have any, so whatever I spend comes out-of-pocket. Also, every time I think of a really good gift idea for him, he buys it for himself 2 days later. Ass. IP: Logged |

quote: LOL...This one is always tricky. My man is easy to buy for, but I know he'll stress to no end about my present, so I've suggested that we just treat ourselves to a fancy dinner or do something sort of extravagant for New Year's. No shopping and you get good quality time together. IP: Logged |

I stressed my boy out a few times at the beginning of our relationship. I made him go buy me a gift and wrap it! isn't that horrible? I know it's stressful for him so now we just pick out the gift we want and the other buys it. Still will be our first New Year's physically together... I'm SOO excited. I really like the idea of going to a fancy dinner. IP: Logged |

Jello is pretty easy to buy for, because he always gives me hints. But a DIY for him for this year is matted black-and-white photographs of him racing his car, which I think he will appreciate. I don't, however, know what to do for my dad or for my FIL...

since we just moved in to the house, i am so tempted to take the cop out route and get house related things, but those don't really seem like gifts for HIM. the other day, he pointed out that my asking the fam for good cookware was like asking for a gift for the house - not for me, so i am guessing he'd feel that way about a bucket of goodies from home depot. at least my idea of making a knitting bag for my mom will go over well and be easy. quote: Maybe, but I ALWAYS ask for stuff like that for Xmas - stuff I want/need but won't spend the $$ on myself. I asked my mom for good baking pans one year, if not for that I'd still be using bent-up $3 aluminum ones. This year I'm asking for an electric hand mixer, so I can stop using my hand-me-down eggbeater. It's not very exciting, but I need one and I won't ever buy one for myself. I like to get stuff like that. [This message has been edited by bekkaboo (edited 11-24-2003).] IP: Logged |

I totally agree with you, bekkaboo. I told S that if I got good cookware, he'd see my face light up like a little kids'! Since I like to cook a lot, it feels like a great gift, and most of the good kitchen stuff I have is stuff others have gifted me with. But when he has that perception, my guess is that I shouldn't get HIM that sort of stuff. Unless it's a tool belt. Which would just be sexy. IP: Logged |

hi everyone, i'm a newbie to the digs family, but i've gotten sooooo many ideas from you guys (holy marble magnets...), that i thought i'd share my big homemade gift idea for the year. i'm making homemade room fresheners for all my coworkers. i picked up a few containers of cinnamon sticks from an ocean state job lot (discount store) for 88 cents each, and a big container of ground cinnamon (88c), a big container of nutmeg (88c), a big bottle of cheap vanilla extract ($1), and a bunch of those dollar store holiday mugs (48c each). the whole haul cost me $12. you toss the sticks and the cubes into a sauce pan with some simmering water, and wa-lah! - excellent smelling house. (my mom moves every few years, so i know all the good sell-your-house real-estate tricks. haha) the mug is just a nice package. cheap and useful. can't beat it with a stick. - sara [This message has been edited by saranoh (edited 11-24-2003).] IP: Logged |

Okay, y'all have inspired me to actually give gifts this year! I'm doing Cozy Winter Gift Boxes for my girlfriends. Last night I bought a bunch of fun wintery socks to add to each box along with homemade hot chocolate and marshmellows, tea bags, chocolate swizzle sticks and a teensy bottle of spiced rum. I was going to make rum balls, but then I realized I don't do things like that! ![]() So now I just need to find the right container to put all this in. Something lightweight would be good, since I'm shipping most of these. I found plain Chinese food cotainers for really cheap, but I'm not sure if a quart size is big enough. IP: Logged |

journeygirl, you could get some of those cardboard/craftboard boxes from your craft store. They come in a million sizes and even some that look like holiday shapes. They're super lightweight. You could either tie a bow on top with raffia for an easy, sort of natural look. Or you could decorate the heck out of 'em with paint or cover them with felt or something. IP: Logged |

I know I've been a lurker lately but just wondering if anyone has any input on my Christmas gift ideas. Initially, I was thinking the whole baked goods/jarred gifts idea (and still may go back to that) but watching Martha last night gave me some ideas... What do y'all think of this? I didn't actually watch the segment but I'm thinking plants in pretty glass containers might be the way to go. However, I'm wondering if I'll be able to buy some little plants and make my own little garden at this time of year. As you can probably tell, I'm not a gardener. I'm hoping someone out there can help!

Ooooh pretty. You can definitely grow some plants indoors this time of year, I'm growing some spider plants from cuttings right now. I believe you can also buy powdered rooting hormone for plants to put in water to help grow roots from cuttings, but I don't know how well it works. I am making tshirts for everyone this year. I designed some funky graphics, printed them on iron on transfer paper and ironed them on to little baby tees. I replicated the "Hello My name is" badge and filled in different names like "Diva" "Bitch" "Supermodel" and my favorite "Luca". I need help from some creative souls here! For my grandparents this year I'm filling a basket with all kinds of goodies in it, wine, homemade cakes and cookies, a framed picture of me and my sisters...but I need some more tips on what to fill it with! Also I found this book at a thrift store, it was from the 50's and had lots of pictures from our city (my grandparents love that kind of stuff). I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what I could do with it?? Of course I could just give it like it is, but I feel that's a bit boring.. IP: Logged |

how about decoupaging something with the pages from the book? you could do a picture frame, or a tin/box to put the cookies in.

I just saw the cutest idea at "Home Goods" and thought I would share. They had taken metal holiday cookie cutter and used it as a mold for chocolate, and decorated the result. So the recipient got chocolate & a cookie cutter for a gift. The one they had was super cute a snowman cutter filled w/white chocolate. I think I may do this for co-workers this year. IP: Logged |

I'm known to be superstitious. Last year for the little presents for various co-workers and casual friends that I wanted to "remember" at Christmas, but not spend much on, I made up Holiday Superstition gifts. I took plain white Chinese takeout containers (from Pearl River since I'm in NYC) and wrote explanations in red and green sharpies of the contents on each side and then included: dried black-eyed peas (eat on New Year's Day - for wealth) dried apple rings - wrapped a few in colored saran wrap - eat on Christmas Eve for a healthy year Marzipan pig - can't remember which day to eat (I googled all the superstitions so you can find this - it's a Germanic one) but basically pigs can't look back on the old year - probably New Year's Eve or Day (there's a German food store online based in Texas - they were pretty nasty tasting, but cheap!) - if you want to spend more, you could go with peppermint pig(lets) from Saratoga Springs although I think their superstition calls for eating it on Christmas. Fortune cookie - just cause it fit and now I'm blanking on the last item. Anyway, people really seemed to like them and since I bought all the parts in bulk (I did between 50-60 of them), it was really cheap. This year I'm going with a different superstition - a silver acorn. Carrying an acorn with you is supposed to bring you a long life (Scandinavian superstition). I'm going to put it in a tin filled with Dutch Mints and then on top I'm going to try making those marble magnets using an image that suits each person and that can hold a card with the acorn explanation on it. If anyone knows of other holiday-appropriate superstitions that can be turned into gifts, I'd love to get ideas for next year. -Melissa IP: Logged |

This is along the same lines as other baskets listed here, it's called "Cold Winter Night Kit" Contains: o a candle (dollar store) o firelog chips o cocoa or tea o a homemade treat (with recipe card) o $5 video rental cards o coffee mugs o playing cards or small games. Load the gifts into dollar store baskets, wrapped in tissue paper and tied with curling ribbon. Make "A Cold Winter Night Kit" tags on the computer (cut out with decorative scissors and decorated with paper punch snowflakes)to tie to the outside. IP: Logged |

Yes! I'm finally crafty for Christmas! Last night my card idea came to me, and I have to go to JoAnn's to get a few more supplies, but I think I'm all set to start the assembly there. I'm doing little beaded snowflakes on a small square of crumpled aluminum foil on the front. Very simple. Also, as I was rummaging through my card making stuff, I thought of two other easy and cheap craft ideas for my friends. One is this accordian envelope book, that I figure they can use for coupons, receipts, clipped recipes, photos, or general monthly stuff (if I do 12 pockets). The other thing, which I'll present as a package tie on, will be a beaded monogram/initial ornament. I finished all of those last night. This idea came from an old issue of Martha (sorry - no mention of it on her website). Basically, you just string about a foot worth of seed beads onto some 20 guage wire (all I had was 22 guage and it worked fine), looping the ends so the beads don't fall off, and then shape it into an initial. They turned out beautifully! I used a silvery glass bead, and I think I'll tie them onto the wrapped accordian books with silvery ribbon. Then, they can have them as ornaments or whatever. Easy and cheap! The monograms cost me nothing to make! IP: Logged |

I'm putting the last touches on my list... leaning toward some instant meal type things for a few folks and a movie basket for the photographer who does our portraits, something for the postlady, etc. I decorated plain unders and t shirts for Mander and they came out great! I used appliques and iron ons I made, and a couple of patchy things I bought. She's going to love them. Thanks to whoever thunk that idea! IP: Logged |
