I've never wanted to sew more than I have in the last week while my machine is in the shop. I can't wait to get it back. I'm experimenting with using patterns this fall and hoping to sew some stuff for various folk. I'm also making sock puppets. An idea I've had but need to research more for costs is to frame the trading cards I've been trading. I've gotten some that are so beautiful and would look great matted and framed. Need to re-initiate the matte cutting research and how much frames will cost. IP: Logged |

In the marble magnet mode, I think this web page of resin art looks like a good way to turn bottle caps into cool magnets. IP: Logged |

I'm starting my Christmas projects. A lot of people are getting tea towels with embroidery on the trim. One friend is getting a set with penguins cuz we love them. I was trying to figure out for another friend what to do. She & I used to go for Sushi at least once a week prior to her going on the Atkins diet. So I thought of making her tea towels with little sushis on them. But I cannot find a pattern. She sent me sushi socks - so I have a basic look for them (and it's an excuse to eat more sushi!!) So I can't decide between making a sushi set of tea towels - or I was thinking of making a pillow for her couch that was a sushi roll - kind of like a bolster pillow. Any suggestions on where to find patterns or which I should do? Thanks! IP: Logged |

yum...sushi crafts. I thought of making a sushi quilt, with different sushi in each square. plus i saw some great sushi themed fabric. of course I am already in the middle of a more traditional quilt as a christmas gift. IP: Logged |

I made her sushi pj pants for Christmas & it seems to be a running theme for us. I went to the book store today & was completely depressed at the LACK of embroidery books there. They had cross stich and about a million and a half knitting books. (I can't knit to save my life). I think I'll try the tea towels... I'm not an experienced seamstress IP: Logged |

Id like to have a bash at making those lavender stuffed pillows. I figure I can sew in a straight line but am a little stumped over what to use for the filling? I know probably dried lavender was a dash of essential oil? Do I need any other ingreidients? IP: Logged |

Merimoo Housemate |
Fluffygurl - just lavender is fine, as long as the fabric has a tight weave. Meggo - I don't know where to find a sushi embroidery pattern, but I can ask on a newsgroup I frequent. A proper needlework store is a much better place to find patterns than the bookstore - you can look here for shops. [This message has been edited by Merimoo (edited 09-02-2003).] IP: Logged |

Meggo- I found a sushi pattern for you, but it costs $25, rather ridiculous. But if you are willing, or are good at just looking, take a peek. http://www.embroidery.com/search.asp I also found a cross stich sushi pattern. I don;t know if that would work for you, and it's in Portuguese, but it's better than nothing, I suppose. http://www1.uol.com.br/agulhadeouro/materiais/02.htm It sounds like a fun project. I think the sushi bolster pillow would be great too! IP: Logged |

ng-la - thanks for the help! I think the reason that one is $25 - is it's for the embroidery machines... bummer. BUT - it looks rather easy to duplicate - maybe I'll start trying to draw it freehand. Between that link & the other you sent - I might actually be okay! (although I still think the little pillow would be fun). IP: Logged |

Can't remember if I got this idea from Digs or not...what I've done is with the thin sheets of magnets that have a sticky side. I've poached popular artwork that I've found on various searches (Mostly Shag, vintage postcards, vintage pin-ups and tiki-related) and Adobe'd them to the size I want and then printed them onto photo-paper. Cut into rectangles or fancy shapes, peel and stick the magnets carefully, and I have the cutest darn magnets I've ever seen! And I'm customizing them for people's specific kitschy obsessions. And you can never have too many fridge magnets. IP: Logged |

This Christmas is going to be tough. I am getting married in November, so I will have more family members to give to. Also- Since we are joining together in a new house with new and wedding expenses and such- gift giving budget is going to be tight. I don't want to give cheap/crappy gifts... but I want them to be inexpensive and thoughful. I don't have a bunch of time to make each person a gift either... due to my wedding planning. **edited to say: [This message has been edited by SumerLapis (edited 09-08-2003).] IP: Logged |

With everyone around for the wedding, I'm sure that tons of photos will get taken. Perhaps you could give framed photos of different family members with each other or with you. IP: Logged |

My suggestion is make sure you get pictures at your wedding of you, possibly the groom and the person getting the gift. For example - Great Aunt Martha might really like a picture of herself, you & the new hubby in a nice frame. Chances are by Christmas - you may have just gotten your picture proofs back from the photographer & no one will really have seen them. So that's a nice touch. Maybe put in a nice note about how much you enjoyed sharing your day with them - maybe put that tucked into the back of the frame. Maybe personalize some of the frames a little... IP: Logged |

We were at Borders this weekend and there were a bunch of frames on the 50% off rack. I got 2 matching frames for each set of grandparents plus a nice triptych frame for my aunt. Now I just have to score great pictures of the kids between now and December... and I already know what sizes I need. I am never going to struggle for gift ideas for my parents again. IP: Logged |

I made chocolate truffles last year for two of my friends and they turned out wayyy better than I even expected, so I might do that again for some other people. I've also been inspired by the soap-making thread to try that out. I might toss in a smattering of personalized marble magnets, too. IP: Logged |

Christmas in my world is going to be a Merry Crafty Christmas -- I'm not giving anything that I didn't make. For my mom I'm painting a platter at one of those pottery painting places. For my dad and SO I'm learning how to knit and making scarves -- is that cool or just cheap? For my SO's family I'm making candles. Friends will be getting beaded jewelry. So the only person I'm not sure about is my 18 yr old brother, who is in college -- any ideas? IP: Logged |

Hi, I have also started to think about christmas presents already (after starting waay too late last year). I'm a poor student, so I'm planning on making (or buying cheap) most of my gifts, and I need ideas! This is who I'm giving presents to: - Boyfriend: 21 yrs old, is into music, movies, bonsai trees - Sister, 13 yrs old. - Sister, 10 yrs old. - Grandparents. I'm thinking maybe something edible? - Mom: loves decorating, vintage things, crafts etc. - Dad: is into music. Any good tips?? (I can't knit, so that's out of the question ;-) IP: Logged |

HELP! I have several nice variations of my truffle recipe that I'll be making for Christmas gifts. But, I am having a bear of a time finding suitable gift/food tins. All the ones I’ve seen are far too small. I need something that I can put 15-30 truffles in with no more than two layers. This is mainly a gift for my almost mom-in-law who loves my candies... but I need something else to give, and as she herself is SO competently crafty I fear hand-making her much else. I thought maybe a scarf… but I fear knit-rejection. IP: Logged |

Every year Walmart sells plastic "tins" in holiday themes. They usually come in three-packs and are perfect for giving candies. I have used them for truffles in the past. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Well, I hate walmart for about a dozen reasons... but I will look in some similar stores... I hadn't thought of plastics besides tupperware which was a no. Thanks IP: Logged |

for truffles, I really recommend that you either give them in an airtight container, or tell the recipient to transfer them into an airtight container when they receive it. They last longer (especially in the fridge) and taste better. IP: Logged |

I started a pottery class last night and it's going to be lots of fun. We pretty much get to make whatever we want so I'm trying to think of present ideas. Maybe little tiles I could string for bracelets? Small trays? What would you make? IP: Logged |

the salvation army and other thrift stores always have tons of xmas tins lying around. they just need a good cleaning and sometimes a repainting if you don't like the design. they are very cheap too! IP: Logged |
|
c_green Housemate |
DUH! I feel so lame for not thinking of the salvation army... I can tottaly re-paint and I worry about the air-tight-ness of the plastic tins. The truffles I make are rolled in toppings, not dipped so they dry out easily. IP: Logged |

I saw something you guys might consider doing...it was in a ridiculously expensive store in my neighborhood, so it's gotta be cool, right? :P It's a cocoa mix kit, complete with marshmellows, peppermints, etc. It's in a painted glass jar. Instructions inside the jar. I can take another look if you want more details. Seemed right up your crafty alley. IP: Logged |
