I started making soap last month. I decided to make people soap for christmas and it turns out that I really enjoyed it. The people I made the soap for loved it and are clamoring for more. I've searched for some online info, but I was wondering if any other people on Digs were soap makers. I'd love to share info and ideas.... anyone? Sarah IP: Logged |

Yes, I made soap last Christmas for everyone. I got some inspiration from the Martha Stewart website, and followed the directions on the box of glycerin that I bought at the craft store. IP: Logged |

What kind of molds did you use? I decided to use some empty containers I had around the house instead of buying the ones I saw at the craft store. I liked them because the shapes were different than traditional bar soap. Did you come up with anything interesting to mix into your soaps? Sarah IP: Logged |

Are you guys talking about making it from scratch or from the kits in the crafts store? I helped my mom make it from scratch many moons ago. IP: Logged |

I made soap for Christmas gifts too! Everyone was impressed (although some thought they were candy instead of soap) ![]() I just bought the melt and mold type from Michael's - very easy. Just added some essential oils, dye and poured in an ice tray. I got the idea from another Digs topic (which I can't find but thanks to that Digster for that idea!)

I made soap for christmas via the glycerin stuff they sell in craft stores...interested in learning more about how to make new and different soaps! IP: Logged |

I made some soap for Christmas as well. Its so much fun to make, its almost like cooking, but you don't feel guilty because you can't eat the end result!!!! Thinking about the different combos of scents, colors, textures is fun. Our city offers Adult Education courses, and they are offering a class on how to make bath fizzies and melts---I'm going to take it. I've also ordered a book called Melt and Pour Soapmaking and another called Soapmaking for Fun and Profit. IP: Logged |

I used the glycerin blocks that you just melt and pour. I made some with oatmeal and honey, some with milk and honey, green tea, rosemary and cinnamon/clove. The cinnamon/clove bars were definitely the hit. My BF even snuck one out of our extra bathroom to use in the shower. I made a few for my friend's daughter that were "plain". I made a blue bar, cut it up into little cubes and then dumped the cubes in a yellow bar that was just starting to set. Then I did the same thing with pink and orange. She's 4 and she loved them. I think I'm going to make some of my own molds from sculpey clay and see if I can't sell the soaps. I'm interested in hearing what other ingredient combinations you guys came up with... spill the beans ladies. Sarah IP: Logged |

I put flowers in mine. I used the clear glycerin and made a few different ones: rose petals small daisy-like flowers some little purple flowers that didn't turn out too well (the heat wilted them) rosemary IP: Logged |

chebbah Housemate |
Do you mean fresh flowers? or dried? That's a good idea. IP: Logged |

Fresh... they came out really pretty, especially the ones with rose petals. IP: Logged |

i'm bumping this because due to my summer boredom i've rediscovered the joys of melt-n-pour soap. Anyone have any good website links w/recipes or project ideas on this? I'm too cheap to shell out $ for the books, and my local library has me on hold for their copies ;P IP: Logged |

where do I buy all the cool stuff you guys mentioned to put in soap? Health food stores? IP: Logged |

Most of the things I use I either grow myself or buy at the health-food or grocery store. Rosepetals: Buy 2 or 3 single roses, and rip off the leaves! Most supermarkets sell fresh-packs of herbs and they will have mint, or else find someone with an herb garden and I'm sure they'd be happy to share! Essential oils are usually sold in health-food stores or "hippie-type" stores. The flowers are usually courtesy of helpful neighbors if I do not grow them myself. The oatmeal: I either get lazy and buy Aveeno oatmeal bath packs or get smart and buy a big canister of oatmeal and run it thru the blender till it's powder. Hope this post isn't too redundant! no no you're not redundant!!! the aveeno idea is a fabulous one - hope you don't care if i steal it from you thanks for all the help kids! IP: Logged |

i made soap for people last christmas, and they are begging for more. i did it the super-cheap, super-cheater way: i used lavendar and bergamot oils (a few drops added to the shredded soap as its melting) and then sprinkled white and green tea leaves on the top of the mold as it was setting. the tea leaves make for a bit of a mess in the shower, but people loved it! i wrapped them in wax paper, and sealed them with labels i made with a simple rubber stamp on sticker paper. people love smelly soaps cut into odd shapes - even better if its kinda homemade! This is not regarding "homemade" soap, although I do suppose SOMEONE made it, but has anyone out there used the Primal Elements soap? I love the "Midnight Moon" version so much that my boyfriend bought me a huge loaf of it (the way they get it @store before it is sliced) for Christmas. I wish I knew what was in it that smelled so good so I could make my own. MAN IS THAT STUFF AWESOME! IP: Logged |

magnus digity - can you melt down any kind of soap & reshape it? Or does it have to be a glycerin/castile based one? Also, is it safe to melt soap in the micro? Thanks! [This message has been edited by silvermoon1984 (edited 07-31-2003).] IP: Logged |

we did soaps for people last christmas and was just thinking of doing a wave of summer soaps. what timing! the varieties that people loved the most: pink grapefruit (grapefruit essential oil and pink food coloring in clear soap) we got the glycerine stuff at the craft store - but get the suspension soap if you want to have stuff floating in your soap. without it, the cornmeal, chamomile, and poppyseeds just sink to the bottom. but with it, they stay suspended throughout and give a nice little scrubby feeling. we used tarangos and pringles holders for molds and they worked really well. just secure the bottom with plastic wrap and you get cute triangles and rounds of soap. then we wrapped the soaps in plastic wrap and made labels out of sticker paper. editted to add: my niece LOVED the clear soap i made for her that had bath toys in it - rubber ducks and frogs were a big hit. I'm curious about adding things like milk and honey- will adding them to clear glycerin soap make it opaque, and does the milk go bad? Wouldn't want my soap to turn sour

Maybe you could use powdered milk? IP: Logged |

i don't know about using real soap, but i made soy milk and honey soap for people last year (sounds funky, but it was driven by a desire to make milky soap, but a few dairy allergies in the family). it turned out really nicely. i started with a white glycerin soap, so i don't know how the clear stuff would look. but people liked it. I've done the shred plain castile soap and melt it to make fancy soap thing before, and it worked really well. You have to add a little bit of olive or sesame or sweet almond oil. Then add whatever essential oils or other fun stuff you want. We melted it in a crock pot. This method doesn't yield a totally smooth mixture, even when totally melted and ready to mold, it still looks a but chunky. The best combinations were bergamot oil and tangerine zest, eucalyptus and rosemary, and a brown rice (ground up) and green tea (smashed up the tea leaves) one that we wrapped in nori and called Sushi Soap, very exfoliating. It was a fun way to pass a winter evening and gave us delusions of working at lush. IP: Logged |

oh, and we sqashed mung beans on the outside of some of the soaps. Extra exfoliating/massaging lumpies. Don't go too crazy with the beans, though, or the soap won't hold together. IP: Logged |

silvermoon1984 - i've only ever tried this with the castile and glycerine soaps. the castile definately better than the glycerine. it melted smoothly (since I dont have a doubleboiler, i boiled a big pot of waster and used a stainless steel mixing bolw just set into the top of the blioling water to melt down the shreded soap), and reshaped really nicely in the molds making a nice smooth soap. the glycerine soaps was kind of greasy, and a little squishy even after it had set for about 48 hours in the mold. for an experiment, i tried mixing the two. they separated in the mold and made this weird layered effect, which people liked, but i thought looked strange...like two old bars of soap smashed together. when i make soap again, i will use castile, either pure, or dr. bronners (for a pepperminty base...). hope this was helpful! happy soapmaking! magnusdigity IP: Logged |

These are all cool ideas. Another thing I used to do when I was a kid was take all the stubby little bits of leftover soap until I had about 3/4 of a jam jar worth. Then Id crush them or take a razor blade and shave em (depending on how patient I was)Once they are finely shredded/crushed Id cover then soap with boiling water and stir until the soap was dissolved. Id then add some essential oils(my favorites were peppermint or grapefruit)and a smidge of food colouring. Leave overnight and in the morning you got yourself some jellysoap. Apparently people used to do this in WW2 when rationing was still in effect but yeah its a fun way to pass and hour or two IP: Logged |

Powdered milk works well in clear glycerin. It gives it a faint, yellowy color. I made some bars with milk, honey and ginger in them and added the tiniest bit of blue food coloring... the bars came out in this amazing pale green, it was super pretty. I also made a green tea soap that I poured onto a shallow baking pan. Once it had set I used a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. I had enough bits left over to melt them down again and make a small bar of the soap for myself. I never had a problem with the glycerin melting. If you do it in the microwave the consistency should be fine, if you're getting lumps then you just nuke it a little longer. I'm getting ready to make another batch of soaps for my friends. I'm going to use some of the ideas in this thread, it should be a lot of fun! IP: Logged |

quote: My mom and I make soap from scratch including rendering fat into tallow. We use (this is kind of funny) these plastic circular trays meant to be used to cook eggs in the microwave that we find at thrift stores. They are about a foot accross and have lots of little muffin tin like depressions in them. We've also used cheap rectagular tupperware. The ridge on the bottom of the tupperware gives the soap a nice detail. IP: Logged |

A silly question but with all the natural ingredients in the soaps Will they go off/bad? I plan on making soaps for xmas presents and would like to start doing them this week but theres not much point if they rot between now and then! IP: Logged |

pollyhyper Housesitter |
I don't know about going bad but they do lose some of their potency. If you start them now (personally I'd wait if they are for Christmas) be sure to wrap them really well in plastic wrap or something airtight, and keep them away from any major temperature changes. IP: Logged |

I made some soap this past week for my friend and I made sure to make a few extra bars for the house... however... I don't know if it's the temperature, but they keep getting this weird shimmery coating on them. I know that glycerin can actually give off moisture, so I assume that is what's happening.... but it didn't do it when I made soap last christmas. Anyone else have this problem in the summer months? I'm thinking there must be some way to "seal" the soap, so that this doesn't happen. Sarah IP: Logged |
