I've got some faded black clothing, essentially they're in good shape but have faded. Would it be worth it to redye them the same color? I know that most consumer fabric dye products don't work worth a crap to change a color, but would it work to make them very black again? Has anybody tried this?

I’ve done that very thing with faded black jeans & socks. I got 2 boxes of black RIT dye & followed the directions for dyeing in the washing machine. I ran a bleach cycle and it came out clean. Also took the time to wash the top, the machine hasn’t been so clean since. Right topic, clothes came out nice and black.

Won't the dye bleed when you wash your clothes again, though? I'd hate for everything to end up grey...

i've done this a few times before, and the first time, the dye did bleed when i washed them. after you dye the garments, do a cold water wash -- run it through the machine in cold water, no detergent. it helps to seep out the excess dye, i think.

Adding a cup of vinegar helps lock in the color, too. I've dyed my black clothes before, but I couldn't tell if it made that much of a difference. Boy did it make a mess in my mom's washing machine, though. I ran two empty loads afterwards, one with bleach, because I was afraid that there would be some rogue dye hiding out after the first empty load.

If you go to an art supply store and look in the batik section you can find heavy duty dyes and the additives to make them stick. I think it's some kind of salt they use to fix the dye.

I've used RIT to dye black clothes black again and it seems to work though they fade again fairly quickly. I think some fabrics just don't hold dye well. Which is maybe why they faded to begin with.

What about tea dying? I know you can do some funky tie-dye lookin' stuff with tea, but what about brewing up some strong black Darjeeling and soaking faded black clothes in it?

Tea dying even in quite strong tea turns things light brown. I think you'd need really REALLY strong darjeeling with tar instead of honey to do anything to black clothes.

There is detergent designed to keep black clothes from fading?

I just overdyed my black jeans this weekend. One box of dye for 2 pairs of jeans, I figured that they were already black & just needed a touch up one box should do. I’m thinking of turning a pair of blue jeans dark brown and I’d use 2 boxes of dye for that.

I then cleaned my washing machine with an empty bleach & detergent cycle. Then washed a bunch of towels. All my loads since then have been fine. My newly dark jeans I’ll wash only with other black clothes for a while. Till I get lazy & forget.

Last week I dyed some faded black shirts and a sweater that were headed for the Goodwill pile. The sweater was actually faded dark blue. Not bad! I used Rit and the boiling/soak overnight method, and then handwashed and hung outside to dry the next day. They look much better, but I'll have to see if they stay nice and dark.

When I was younger and used to do tie-dye, we used to soak the dyed clothes in really salty water afterwards to "fix" the dye.

Dark Laundry would be a great name for a Cure cover band.

this part makes me laugh since I am head-to-toe black-wearer today:

"...it also cleans the fabrics and clothes that consumers care about the most, since dark clothes play such an important part in today´s fashions."
