I had no idea that this thread was such riveting reading. Seriously. Who knew that beauty disasters occur so regularly? Wow.

No joke. That's the only reason why I read it, too. (Although I am going to have to do something about my grey hairs, but that will probably involve going to a salon.)

I'm with you guys. I read this just to stop me from wanting to dye again...and it IS strangely riveting. I finally grew out all my old color. I'm gonna go gray gracefully. No matter what I did when I home-dyed, it never came out the right color and always faded into brassiness. I'm actually growing quite fond of my gray.

I know this sounds crazy, it actually works very well (Im posting this after reading some very interesting hair disasters!) But I had to strip my hair of color one time, not from BLACK but from a light brown, and my stylist suggested using Dawn dish soap. It worked very well, but you need a very good conditioner afterwards!!

Tasha, thanks so much for your advice. I came THIS close to going back to the salon yesterday, but my boyfriend told me the same thing you said: let my hair recover first...although it's not really dry, it needs a rest for a couple weeks.
It's just so hard to put up with every day!!! AHHHH And the wise cracks at work hahaha!
Then I'll go to a good salon to get it fixed.

Looks pretty darn natural; highlights were easy to do and were a good match with the hair color I selected (or in other words, didn't just come in ONE highlight color: blonde.) Fairly subtle results. Really great after conditioner. Feeling GLAM!

Oh... and thanks so much for posting a link for the coupon. Definitely makes me feel better about spending THAT much money on at home hair color when I can get a discount to try it.

If you don't want black hair, please don't use black hair dye.[/B]

I didnt dye my hair black b/c I wanted it. My friends hair was this really pretty darkish brown color. I never let anyone- other than a salonish- dye my hair, but I didnt have the money and I desperately wanted her color. So we go to S@lly's Be@uty Supply, and she got the same color of dye that she said she used on her hair. She put it in, and said that she didnt need to time my color because she dyes her hair so much that she knew how long to wait. Well I go to wash my hair out, and it pitch jet black. I literally freaked out and cried. She told me not to worry and within about 2 weeks it would fade. Well it never did. SO over about a 3-4 month period, I put store bought maroonish highlights in it, put a dark brown over it, then decided I had to get rid of it, so I bought a stripper/bleacher for naturally dark hair, well that's what ruined my hair.

So now that I'm done reliving that nightmare again- I didnt intentionally want or dye my hair black. I'm not worried about it anymore though, because it's been MONTHS- about 8 to 9- since the incident, and my hair is getting healthy, long, shiny, and beautiful again. I will never use store bought dye on my hair again. Oh wow I cant believe that I did that to my hair in the first place. I use to never, never ever dye my hair, especially not myself. This is going to be about a year recovery or longer. But it is worth it to get the healthy, natural and pretty hair back that I once had about. I cant wait to get there again!

I just had to clarify that... =)

I have medium red brown hair with yellow-blond highlights. Recently my hairdresser recommended that I touch up my roots. Due to time issues, he applied the color and put me under this large set of light for about ten minutes. After he shampooed my hair, he informed me that he had a problem. He removed the color too soon. After some discussion, another hairdresser recommended that he apply a brown toner for two or three minutes and wash it out without shampoo. Now my hair is an all over mousy red brown. I still have highlights but they don't stand out. My hair is dry and the color is dull. I've lost my shine and shimmer. It's only been a few days and my roots are now showing as a darker brown than the rest of my hair. What is a toner and was this the proper correction? How do I restore my natural shine? Will highligting help to lessen the brown root problem? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi! There's a thread about haircoloring questions here. Highlighting might lessen your brown roots, but more dye will just harm your hair more and won't bring back the shine. I hope you got your money back!

After reading everyone's stories of hair dye disasters, I can relate. I've been there, done that, and apparently am there again.

Against my better judgment, I used a highlighting kit this weekend on my dark blond hair. I obviously don't highlight well, this is my second time trying and not suceeding. I just can't get it right, too much of the "solution" goes on my hair at my roots, blah, I don't have the money to got to the salon to fix it right now. Now the whole top of my head it bright brassy blonde!(with some dark streaks and spots thrown in to add to the attractiveness)

My husband keeps saying it looks good, but after looking at it I know know how he can think that..I'm sure he is just saying it to make me feel better.

Anyone tried Fanci Full rinses to tone down brassiness or cover tones they don't want in their hair? In my past hair dye disasters I have used these rinses to cut down on tones I didn't want. It worked well enough to cover a spinach green tone to my hair (the time I learned that brown and yellow make green, and that red cancels green).

I'm going to buy some today and see how it works(again). If it makes my hair look any better is is an excellent solution to my problem. A BIG bottle of it costs about $5. You just towel try your hair, then saturate it with the rinse. Style hair as usual after that (styling products and all), it stays in all day, and comes out when you wash your hair. It never damaged my hair.

Keep your fingers crossed, I'll let you all know if it works!

Same old story dyed my med auburn hair black, then used loreal product to strip color applied Loreal med auburn hair color, definitely Ronald Mcdonald hair, went to the store no Loreal Dark Auburn color so i used Feria Auburn Brown turned my hair a scary crimson color. I called Loreal hotline and they suggested med brown as it is a nuetral color. Just finished coloring and it is now a color between the dark auburn and med auburn. Sooooooo much better I can leave the house without a hat. Don't get me wrong, I love interesting colors, but the crimson just didn't cut it with my complexion. Yeaaaah I'm saved for now don't know how it will look when it fades tho. The hot lines do really help. But next time I decide to get creative, I'll head for the salon.
