I'm looking to home highlight my hair soon and was wondering if anyone could suggest any well known(as i live in england there aren't many brands available locally)bleaches and dyes. I'm avoiding jsut bleaching my hair without a dye on top as it tends to go quite bright yellow/orange when i bleach it. At the moment it's dyed permanent mid-ash brown(but looks a little warmer(orangey) as my hair ALWAYS does)so i'm probably thinking of having a few different colours of highlights going from light brown to dark blonde. It's naturally light browny-orange and my skin is pale but sometimes rosy. Any ideas of products or better suited colours anyone, please? IP: Logged |

quote: To answer your question, Tasha, the Red Rum was the only really BOLD color so far. I only began coloring my hair back in August or September (2004), and that was with the Red Rum. Since my hair was VERY, VERY gray at the time, and since I used the minimum time for leaving the dye on, I ended up with rather brilliant results. The second go-round, I let it get a bit deeper, but it was still quite bright, and with the same pinkish highlights. As I said earlier, a band mate (at the time) swears to this day that my hair was "flamingo pink" the first time, but this is quite an exaggeration. It was a light red with very pinkish highlights. Since that time, I have used light and medium browns interspersed with one more last dose of the Red Rum. I am now going to try to keep this medium reddish-brown for awhile if I can by matching up the nearest possible color. Eventually, may get a bit more brazen and try one of those 'burgundy' tones. But I will, overall, probably remain in the medium brownish-reddish range for now. IP: Logged |

I bought the L'0real Col0rpulse in purple the other day, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm preparing to be very disappointed by it. IP: Logged |

Oh boy. Guys? If you search g00gle for the exact title of this thread.... we're the 3rd reply down. I wonder if that's our answer. Anyone mind if I edit the title of this thread to maybe make it less g00gleable? (I think I can do that, at least...) EDIT: nope, I can't. But I'm sure Yee-Fan could. Worth asking? Not much to add, except this: PEOPLE, PLEASE DO NOT DYE YOUR HAIR BLACK IF YOU DON'T WANT IT TO BE BLACK. I don't want to be mean, but the word "permanent" is on the package for a reason. And black is THE hardest color dye to get back out. If you don't want black hair, please don't use black hair dye. IP: Logged |

Haha, how long does it take your hair to grow? I'm only popping in to say, after my last fiasco and the generous help of my stylist, I did it again! The old "highlights" were turning real brassy. So I applied a medium ash brown and it's great! Toned down the yellow, lighted up my med-dark brown nicely and actually looks, gasp, natural. Don't try this at home. I'm sure it's a fluke. I have naturally medium blonde hair... about 2 years ago I decided on a dare from my son to dye my hair black- but I settled for dark brown and for 2 year it looked really nice until I went to salon to remove the dark brown and try to strip my hair to its natural blonde colo haha after spending so much money for stripping and highlighting my hair...now the problem is my hair is clinging to this really brassy red color. The stylist said that its iron from my water in my house! Does anyone have any tips for removing red caused by bad water and iron? preferably something i can do with a home recipe? I really dont wanna buy more things to use in my hair or spend more $$ at the salon hahaha IP: Logged |

How about a water conditioning system? I don't mean to get snarky, but people, really! If it says PERMANENT and you don't want PERMANENT, then for god's sake, get something else! "Permanent" means you intend to keep this color for a long time, or at least are willing to cut it all off or deal with major roots until it grows, I repeat, GROWS, out. That is all. IP: Logged |

Keep in mind nothing is really temporary if your hair is blonde. Consider everything to be a commitment. IP: Logged |

I've been dying my hair for about a year now and I really want to get it back to its original colour. The problem is, last time I did this, I got annoyed with the roots and dyed it again leaving me back on square one. Is there any way I can use a semi permanent colour while I'm waiting for hair to grow out? Or is it best to dye my hair with a colour similar to my natural one? IP: Logged |

Maybe you should go to a stylist. I'm guessing that you are young--maybe try just being cool with yellow hair? Or letting it be natural? Or shaving it all off?
Disclaimer: I have never died my hair. Partly because of this thread. I may get copper highlights, however, because my stylist told me it would look nice. Or I might not. IP: Logged |

I, too, would wait for a salon and suck up the first few days of school with yellow hair. Random strangers on the internet, as good-intentioned as we are, are not going to be able to help you as much as a professional will. If you can't or won't wait, and I am in no way an expert on these things, I would try bleach again. I'm assuming you were going for a platinum blonde look if you were bleaching? Maybe it just didn't get light enough the first time. Is your hair naturally dark? I don't think it's a great idea bleaching twice in a row, but if you're already conteomplating dying two more times in the next 3 days, I don't think the bleach would be all that much worse. I thought I'd share my advice re blonde/orange hair. I have brown hair. It is boring. I coloured it red with lighter highlights in January and it was ok. For a fundraiser in March I bleached it and it went orange/ginger. Kind of cool actually but as the roots grew out, it got brassier. So today's solution was to bleach it again - the brassy was because the red pigments from my old colour were particularly hard to get out of the hair and so bleaching it again took the rest out and it's now blond. Just thought I'd share! Also - if you bleach then apply brown you run the risk of going green. As it washes out you might go green too. Approach with care. IP: Logged |

I never usually read this thread since I haven't dyed my hair at all in many, many years and keep it super short now anyway. Well, I saw this bumped and decided to peek in and --- I had no idea that this thread was such riveting reading. Seriously. Who knew that beauty disasters occur so regularly? Wow. (This is also a good preemptive cure for my brief idea of getting highlights. Thanks everyone. Yup, I'm good with what God gave me.) IP: Logged |

you may want to try something strong and cheap, like pert or prell. i think they both wash out color pretty quickly. IP: Logged |

I had the same problem this week, Sweet Pea. I dyed my hair with a semi-permanent red color and I wasn't liking it very much. A few different people told me to wash my hair with Dawn or a similar dishwashing detergent. I mixed it with a little bit of shampoo and deep conditioned after. It worked really well and my hair is fine. Good luck! IP: Logged |
