Just found this site. I'm looking to make a little change in haircolor. Been using L'oreal Light to Extra Light Ash Blonde for several years (natural color med-dk brown) but have GRAY around hairline. I noticed that some of you have used and LOVED the L'oreal Hair Colour Experte. For several years, I've been tempted to try this, BUT have 2 questions... First, what do I do for color (going over a med-light ash blonde where my natural color is med/dk brown)? Second, what do you do to maintain color?? Do you use this product every 3-4 weeks when you have new growth (or a little gray on the sides?). TIA! Carol IP: Logged |

Hello all! I need a little help. I have 5 kids and am on a budget so often I do my own hair coloring with help from friends and family. So, with a naturally dark honey blonde type hair color, I went in and got blonde and black highlights put in. Sounds weird but looked awesome. I decided the other day to change it to red, it turned out fine but I changed my mind and wanted to go blonde. I got feria extra bleach blonde lightening cream, wow did it work! However, I ended up with those brassy orangey type colors mostly at the ends of my hair (which is super short anyway) So, my mother said I needed to put another color on top after I bleached it. I got feria very light beige blonde, put that on it and I don't really think it did anything that I can see. So..... without going to the salon and paying 40-60$ (which is what they said it would cost) What can I do? I'm not terribly disturbed by the color but it's just not right. Any idea's? please? I would appreciate it very much! Thanks, Katrina

Hi, new here. Glad I found you guys. So I am a hopeless hair dye addict. My natural color is a drab brown/dishwater blonde that is absolutlely dull and boring. My fav is to go lighter in a spectrum of blondes. Well curently For the past year or so I have been doing just highlights by Herbal Essence to the point where most of it is blonde. I do this every time my roots grow out and end up doing a little on the rest of my hair just to get a few strands that are super light blonde. Well my hair is about 3 inches below my shoulders now and dry and damaged and yucky. I have not dyed my roots in a while so they are about 2 1/2 inches long and look quite gross. I don't know what to do now. I hate the damage that is in my hair, it looks so nasty when I leave it down, and I have to mess with it with the blow dryer and curling iron just to make it look half way ok which then damages it more. If I let it dry naturaly I look like a poodle that stuck it's paw in a light socket. I have tried many "salon" products to try to salvage it but it still seems so dry and fried. So this is why I have not dyed my roots. I am thinking of just letting it grow out to my natural color even though I hate that color. Problem is I really like it long and don't want to cut off the damaged hair, it will take forever to grow this long. So anyone have any miricle products for damage repair, or anyone think I should try to get the blonde hair back to brown to hide some of the damage? I am deeply frustrated, wish I could stay blonde but every time I do this happens. IP: Logged |

If you are really looking to correct your hair problems and keep your long hair then its best to consult a stylist at a salon. They can do a filler color and probably match your roots. You may have to dye frequently because blonde hair fades color fast. But eventually you will fill it back up with color. Its not that the damage will necessarily reverse but the cuticle won't be open and fried anymore. And I hate to say it becasue I'm not a fan of it- but pantene conditioner is really good for smoothing out hair. I use it on my blonde locks and it makes them silky. IP: Logged |

even though you don't want to cut your hair, you really should. just one or two inches gone can make a real difference in how healthy your hair looks and feels. IP: Logged |

I never thought I'd have to post in this thread. I dye my hair really quite often (and have for the last ten years) and have never had this happen to me before. Anyway, I need some advice. Last night I was bored, so I decided to dye my hair. My hair pre-dye disaster was a very light brown. I was coloring it a auburn color using Natural Instincts. Well, they've changed a lot of the directions since the last time I used it, so not only did I mess up the dye job and get super red, punk hair, but for some reason it didn't take to quite a bit of my hair. It turned out flourescent red on top, and blond brown in splotches on the bottom. The husband and I ran out to Wal-Mart, where I picked up a dark brown dye (Garnier 100% Color) to cover it up and make it all one color. This dye worked considerably better than the other one, but there's still that one spot where it's a little blond/brown, and the rest is a very dark burgundy color. I kind of hate it. It's really dark, not very natural looking, and that blond spot is bugging the heck out of me. So, I'm wondering: how long do I have to wait before I can dye it again? If I were to dye it again, what color would work? I want to tone down the purple and lighten it up a bit. Is there a way to make this fade quickly? I shampooed twice with clarifying shampoo this morning, but it's still just as purple. IP: Logged |

ok just to update, I tell ya I need to join a dying addicts group or something...guess what I did *hanging head down* I dyed my roots blonde again. I did just highlight like I always have. I just love blonde on me. I think it is flattering and don't like my drab brown natural color. BUT I also cut 3 inches off and got a good deep conditioner for blonde dyed hair. I made sure when doing my roots to only get my roots and to not do such large chunks this time to maybe avoid so much damage. It was enough to get rid of the look of my obvious roots. Well it does feel a lot better and softer. The stylist that cut it even said it isn't that bad. It just seems to get that way when it gets about 3 inches below my shoulders. Thanks and I will hang around here to hear everyone elses stories. Can you post pictures here? We should all show our hair adventures in photos... IP: Logged |

I have two questions, one that I sort of have an obvious answer for anyway: 1) I dye my hair every few months, and my sister's friend told me that to keep the color longer to wash my hair with egg... Is she full of it or is this a good thing to do? 2) My hair is normally thick. It looks thick, but after my last dye job, it's felt really thin, even though it doesn't look that way. IP: Logged |

I have dark hair that is currently dyed reddish with lighter highlights. How do I go platinum/blonde without ruining my hair? IP: Logged |

I colored my dark brown (almost black) hair around Thanksgiving. It was some sort of L0real highlights; I wanted red highlights streaked through. It's OK, but is growing out and probably would look tons better if a professional did it (which I can't afford, and I don't trust myself to touch it up correctly). So I figured I'd just go back to one uniform color for a while. I grabbed a Natural Instinct color close to my shade (which usually doesn't show up in my hair at all). Now I'm nervous. It says it works on color treated hair, but will it make my hair all one color (or close enough to it)? IP: Logged |

quote: Speaking from experience here... Normally, if you have any sort of color variation, hightlights, whatever, odds are the home hair color kit won't turn all your hair the one color on the box. [And word of warning: don't try and go lighter at home if you have any red in your hair. Unless, of course, you want to look like a calico cat] If you're dying your hair to a dark brown/nearly black shade, though, I would imagine you would eradicate any remaining red hightlights. Only problem with that is you run the risk of landing a one-note color, and with dark hair you need that shimmery-ness and richness. Basically, I think that as long as you stick with a dark-ish color, you should be ok. And Natural Instincts' lack of staying power is a good thing, sometimes. If it totally sucks, it will wash out after a few weeks. Anyway, I've always found NI to be a fairly gentle color, so if you're worried about it destroying your hair, you can relax. IP: Logged |

Thanks Jinxie I'd be content to just keep letting it grow out, but that's when people really start asking if I colored my hair. This highlighting thing was the most potent thing I ever tried. I'd recommend it for anybody with dark hair who wants a noticeable change.

My natural hair color is a dark brown, but one day I decided that I wanted to lighten it up a bit, so I did. I bought a medium brown color with blond highlights, and it looked wonderful, until it slowly started turning an orangey color. I waited about two months to re-dye my hair. I figured I'd give it a rest. So today, I dyed it this deep dark copper, and guess what...IT'S BRIGHT ORANGE! I don't know what to do. I'm going to run out and buy a dark, dark, dark brown to cover it up. I pray that it'll work. Is my hair going to fall out if I dye it twice in one day? IP: Logged |

I had to do that once - was trying to lighten up black dye on my naturally dark brown hair (FYI - YOU CAN'T) -- stripped it, turned ONLY my roots bright orange, dyed it the lighter dye that I had bought, which turned the roots pinkish-reddish, and ended up dying it back black to cover up all the ridiculousness. My hair didn't fall out, but it sho'nuff didn't feel pretty. IP: Logged |

I'd been dying my hair red, then dyed it black, because I was tired of the red [and red is a bitch to grow out]...then after a month or so, I got tired of the black and had the bright idea to just bleach it at home, myself. People do that all the time, right? Piece of cake? Wrong. I wound up with a full-on calico cat look--which is not the style I was going for. IP: Logged |

I, too, am a blonde who just wants to have fun .... well my natural color is a muddy brown, but I can pay for my blonde tresses! The problem I encounter with dying my dark roots blonde is that I always end up with this light orange-ish brassy color on my roots. Seems the only answer is to bleach, then go back and re-bleach the next day with the same color. I've learned at-home products just don't do the job salons do, so rather than dumping ($7-$8 or more) multiple times and "risking" it on my hair.... I go to the salon now pretty much exclusively. I love the fact that if I am not satisfied with my color, I just go back and make THEM fix it. I highly recommend to anyone wanting to "repair" color at home to call around first and find an inexpensive salon nearby to call upon in a dye-emergency.Also, the absolute BEST hair restoration products I have found are Kerastase (made by Loreal). You can get reconstructive shampoos, conditioners, protien or moisturizing treatments to save & repair damaged hair. Kinda pricey and hard to find, but worth every penny if trying to keep from cutting..... my hair is almost to my waist and I went from muddy brown to all-over platinum blonde with only cutting off 2 inches of split ends... good stuff, if you ask me. Hope any of this info helps..... Good Luck!

Hi, all. I am new to this forum. I joined to get more hair color info, since you all seem to have much more experience than I do. I colored my hair for the first time in September on a whim. My hair is very gray and about shoulder length (thin on top). I am male. I play drums (rock music), so ... I'm not shy about making a bold statement with my hair color. Plus, I live in a horridly ignorant little town in eastern KY near Huntington, WV. I really am tickled by the looks I sometimes get from this backward morons around here. When I was young, my hair was so thick that I had to BRUSH it rather than comb it. But that's no longer the case, I'm sorry to say. Anyway, I saw this "Maxim Magazine Just For Men" RED RUM on sale at Walmart. Little did I know that it was NOT designed for gray coverage. The results were dramatic ... unusual ... but I liked it. And I liked it even better the second time. And it DID cover my gray very nicely, by the way. It was INTENSELY RED with pinkish highlights (my natural color is a medium-dark brown). My guitar player swears that it was flamingo pink, but he EXAGGERATES alot. Eventually, I went over it with Just for Men light brown. That toned it down a bit. Better still. Then used the last of three packages of the RED RUM. But Just for Men has BORING colors. So, I went to Nutrisse (drawn to it for the same reason a friend was -- the claims of how nicely it treats your hair with moisturizers, etc, and the CREAMY consistency of the product). I've used both light and medium golden browns over the original red. I now have light brown roots with a medium auburn over the rest of my hair, basically. It's not bad at all. So, I'm trying to pick a color that will keep me in a similar range. Nutrisse is nice, but I am interested in some other products and wondered what results any of you might have experienced with them. I have heard excellent things about Hydrience (Clairol), but don't care too much for their color choices. I am very curious about the Revlon products, particularly the High Dimensions (10 minute developing time!!!). How does it leave your hair? Also, the Revlon Color Silk has NO AMMONIA. That's attractive. But are they any good? Are they reliable? I need body and moisturizing as much as possible. I also need good gray coverage. I don't mind bold colors. The Nutrisse leaves my hair feeling great. Both Nutrisse and Hydrience have good reputations for being reliable (colorwise) and gentle to the hair. I'm in a fairly safe color range (red/brown) to avoid color disasters, or so I believe. So, what about the comparative moisturizing and conditioning qualities of various products you've used? Comments? Thanks. [This message has been edited by Alan (edited 03-07-2005).] IP: Logged |

as crowjoy, I don't have any advice for you either Alan. Welcome to the boards! . One thing I do have to add is I learned my lesson by coloring my hair myself. I leave everything up to the professionals now. After ending up with orange-yellow roots, black-brown hair, with reddish-brown-yellow highlights. Yeah, NOT doing that EVER again. Wow you digsters would really not have believed what I did to my hair. I am not exaggerating at all. After about 2 months after getting my ahir fixed and half of it chopped off, my hair is starting to like me better Good luck with finding advice Alan. IP: Logged |

I cant believe Im posting in this thread. You would have thought I would have had more sense but apparently not. So heres the deal. Im going on holidays next week and wanted a few lighter strands in my brown hair that would catch the sun. So being broke and not able to afford to get my hair done in a salon I opt for home dying. I get this highlighting kit by revlon. It has an all over colour and then a highlighting kit. The colour is a dark blonde/ light brown. So I put the all over colour on. That turns my hair one shade light. I like it so go ahead with the highlights. Guess what happened next? I now have dark orange highlights which look kinda funky. However I know they will fade to bright icky day glo orange as soon as my hair gets a whiff of the sun. I just wanted light brown highlights that would pick up the sun. Any ideas how I can get them? I really cant afford a trip to the salon. Maybe if I just put an all over light brown colour in my hair that might work? IP: Logged |

Hey CJ, Tis the season indeed! I dyed my hair on the Sunday and Im flying out this Saturday so I want to give my hair a few days to settle once I re dye it. My only concern is Ive been reading a bit on hair dying diasters and Ive found that some people have said if you put a light brown colour on light hair it tends to turn the hair a green/blue colour My hair isnt that light though so I think Im going to risk it. Doh why did I even do this in the first place stupid stupid me.

Alan, I don't know about the brands in particular, but take a look at the ones that are formulated to cover grey. From what I gather, those that aren't formulated that way can lead to problems like what you posted about, where the color is off. I've been thinking of going red myself...am I insane?! IP: Logged |

Fluff, here's a thing I think I know.. if you use an ash color it will sometimes look green, but if you've got too much red/brass going on the green in the ash will brown out with the red. Ha! Now you've got me thinking I should try an ash rinse but I promised my stylist I would. not. do. it. again. And I want her to be my friends so I guess I won't. IP: Logged |

I have no idea which product you used, but the major companies (Revlon, L'oreal, Garnier, Clairol) have toll free numbers you can call for assistance with such situations and for color advice in general. If you don't still have the package, then find a similar package or track down the company's number on the internet. The manufacturer may be best prepared of all to coach you through corrective coloring, since they know the chemical base of the product you bought from them and possibly WHY it has affected your hair as it has. At least that would be MY first step. Your instinct might say, "They're the last folks I want to talk to -- they screwed up my hair." But they might hold the key to correcting it. Hair coloring is apparently NOT an exact science, since hair is so individual and since one person's hair might react so uniquely to a given dye. Good luck. Keep us posted. i have a dillema... maybe one of you can give me some advice? a little background on my hair- my hair is naturally a mousey-ashy light brown color. a couple years ago i had black hair and nothing would lift it, so i grew it out and cut out the black dye. i have had my hair almost every color possible at one point in my life and almost always end up going back to a dark brown shade. which is where i am at the moment. i probably have about 6 boxes of dark brown permanent dye over my natural color from the past year. (my hair is a little above my shoulders now). so, heres the thing... i really want to lighten my shade. but i'm short on cash to go to my hair colorist, so i'm attempting something very dangerous-i know. but seeing as though i've colored my hair in the past and have learned from A LOT of mistakes, i'm putting some trust in myself. what i want is to go to a light brown with some lighter highlights. this is the stuff i bought: haircolor remover kit by loreal colour expertise (a light/medium brown ashey color with hightlights you do yourself) a toner for highlighted brown hair a box of medium brown hair dye for my roots i know that seems like a lot of crap but this was my plan... I was going to ask a similar question about removing a hair tint. I tried a double process on my brown/gray hair. First I bleached out the color ( came a brassy yellow color)the toner I used did nothing and since I was going out that evening I put fanciful (temporary shampoo out toner)pale beige. Looked fine. I knew that color would wash out so I put Loreal light ash blonde and now my hair is sought of a taupe color (very drab ash). I was thinking of trying Effasol to remove the color. Any suggestions? I just want to lighten it up and get rid of the dull ash color. IP: Logged |
