So I was looking all over the place and couldn't find my usual colour (Herb@l Essenc*s Medium Red). Thought they might have stopped making it, so I went to their website, and it still showed on there. I sent them an email asking about it, and also asking what they'd recommend if I wanted to switch colours. Never got an answer back. So, I went to Sh0ppers and asked the lady there about getting a bright red, but wanting something that wouldn't kill my hair (I love Herb@l Essenc*s, it makes my hair feel softer after I use it than it did before I dyed it). I also explained the problem with it fading so fast. This was her explanation:

Herb@l Essenc*s is the only kind of brand name dye that does not use ammonia. This is why your hair stays so soft after using it. However, the ammonia helps colour sink into the hair shaft (even red, which doesn't sink in, as much as it coats the strand), so any dye with ammonia will take the colour better and will stay in longer. So you pretty much have to choose between healthier hair, and colour that stays in longer.

I don't know if this is true or not (maybe hairgirl can help ), but it made sense to me, and also explained 2 of my inner questions (why my hair felt healthier than with other dyes - because it is), and why I and others on this thread noticed that Herb@l Essenc*s faded so quickly (no harmful ammonia, which helps keep colour in). I ended up going with the Herb@l Essenc*s Dark Red, because a) have had bad experiences with switching brands and b) I want healthy hair, not just pretty-colour hair. I really like the colour, though it's a lot darker and took a few days for me to adjust to.

Anyway, since others also noted the faster fading with Herb@l Essences, and because it's apparently a less damaging brand than others, just thought you guys might like to know. Again, any confirmation or corrections would be appreciated.

I'm a natural reddish dark blonde and have for years been dying my hair every color imaginable. I've gone to black to platinum white and everywhere in between, almost always with no troubles whatsoever, and a lot of the dying I've done with at home coloring. I was recently a light brown with lots of reddish tones and was not happy with it and so used Loreal's Ultra Light Ash Brown hoping it would give me a beautiful brown with little brassiness. OHHH MY GOD I now have Halloween wig charcoal grey hair thats not even evenly messed up!!! There's patches of disgusting color and patches of somewhat tolerable color. WHAT DO I DO?! About 4 hours after coloring, I shampooed 3 times with a clarifying shampoo to try to strip the color and will do that a few more times, but I'm afraid of what to put back on it to fix the color. I'm not even sure what colors I COULD have now! PLEASE HELP. I'm a college student on a low budget and cannot afford professional help anytime soon. AND to top it off, my boyfriend who I rarely get to see is coming home this weekend and I won't see him for quite some time again and I don't want a lasting impression of witch-hair on his mind. HEEELOP!!

You could try a really dark brown... maybe Garnier Nutrisse in (I think the names are...) Acorn or Truffle? Or, if all else fails, and you're willing to have to bleach the crap out later if you want to change, you could always go black. I like the Clairol Nice 'N'Easy in Natural Blue-black for a shiny, black as a crow black, but it's hard to get it out when you want to change... For some reason the Natural Soft Black came out black with purple in the light, so I'd stick with the blue-black if you choose that... Wish you luck. Also, you could check out the message boards at http://www.hairboutique.com

Oh honey...I know it sucks to pay a ton of money to a salon, but trust me when I say that the only way to do what you want to do, and do it well is to have a pro do it. I've been through exactly what you're trying to do...I had black hair, and I was so tired of it after a while, I decided to fix it myself. And it did not turn out well. Seriously. No, SERIOUSLY. I wound up looking like a calico cat--which wasn't what I was going for. After that fiasco, I slunk into my regular salon, hair covered by a scarf, and begged for forgiveness. My stylist did what she could to fix the mess I'd made, but there was only so much she could do. The kicker--what with deep conditioning, and color-removal and all this double-processing nonsense, it wound up costing me way more than it would've if I'd just gone to the salon first.

Hi ladies, This isn't an at-home hair coloring disaster or anything like me dying my own hair.

I just wanted to know how hard is it to match the dyes up with your natural hair color? I mean how do those stylists do it? I'm thinkin gof getting my hair dyed back to natural color, but just a little nervous reading everyone's mess up stories.

Is there anything reassuring that anyone my be able to tell me? All opinions and knowledge/insight welcome.

Ok, I have a hair emergency! pollyhyper told me to cut down on dying my hair, but of course I never listen. Well yesterday, I went out and bought that Couler Expertise (sp?) by L'Oreal, and yeah, after I got done dying my hair, my hair is sooooo dry and coarse and nasty and discolored, yeah I never thought My hair would turn out like this, but sure enough it did.

Why can't I ever listen. SO I spent about $20 on that dye, and now I get to go to a salon and spend like $100+ just to fix my dumba$s mistake.

Wow, seriously ladies its nottt good...

oh man the joys of life as a girl.

I have naturally dishwater blonde hair which I have always thought was mousy and drab. I highlighted for years. Last year I decided to grow it out..all the way...as long as it will go (which was once to my knees).

Once I made this decision...the problem then was how to highlight such long hair over a long period of time without extensive damage. Even doing the new hair growth would be tricky. I decided to go completely natural.

This has been hard for me. I get the itch to colour or highlight at least once a week. But then I started to think of what was so awful about my natural colour? I had to look at it a lot. In the mirror...in the sunlight...and I started to kind of like it. It's not stunning by any means, but it certainly suits me.

For variety I can use fancy hair sticks or clips. I can play up the colour of my eyes with makeup. Now I haven't the drama of hair colouring and all the damage. Having short hair, this wasn't a big concern...but when growing hair long, it is. Now I concentrate on making what I have as healthy as I can. It's been very different to concentrate on healthy natural hair than it was just to grab a box on a whim and colour it for effect.

Just sharing some thoughts for anyone tired of going the colouring route.

Thanks, seawater. With all the hair-colouring disasters that have gone on here, yours is probably good advice. I am growing my hair out, too, and have found that herb@l Essence$ seems to keep my hair fairly healthy, but I don't know if that would work with blondes (I don't think you can get around the whole bleach process).

hahaha pollyhyper I really need to don't I. Hehe tea it was not godd, but now since it's been about a week, it looks great! the color is awesome, so now I may only end up spending about $70-$90 at the max.

After this, I'm going natural... or atleast leaving the dying and highlightening to the pros.

Yeap I learned a long, hard lesson.

So I dyed my blondish brown hair with N@tural Instinct$ #28, Nutmeg. I love it! And I love that it's a semi-permanent, so my hair doens't feel totally fried (although I've been leaving my conditioner on the ends longer, they're looking a little worn). My boy says it makes me look older, always a plus when you're not-quite-21 and you'll be sneaking into a bar on vacation in a week :O . We'll see how long it really lasts. I've had it on for a week, and it still looks really good.

Edited b/c I put the wrong number for the color. All better now!

I've always had light red hair. I've dyed it a number of times, but always just a shade or two different. This summer, I got highlights and pretty much went blonde. Loved it. But it's fall now and I want something completely different.
Yours truly bought a kit for medium auburn. It was supposed to be on for 20 minutes, but after 5 minutes, my gloves looked amazingly purple. I washed it out immediately and am left with a dark red (like black cherry) color. I really like. It seems a little punk and I am digging it. In fact, I want to go a little more out there and dye my tips black. I think it'll really contrast the red nicely and is something unexpected from me - i like keeping everyone on their toes. (fortunately, my hair looks like dark brown when I put it in a bun, so it looks conservative for work).

long story short - how do I dye the tips of my hair? I don't want to put it on the tips and have it run up the hair, will it stay where I put it? Anyone try this successfully before?

The moderators may move this to covet at some point but since it is here I will give an answer here. I first want to warn you about black, because once it is in there it will not come out without a fight. But if you are sure you want to do this and if you hate it you recognize that you will have to cut it off here is a plan. Take what you want colored in black seperate it from the other hair you want to stay red. Place a rubberband in the middle to give you a guide and keep it seperated. If you can get to it put the black on the ends, if not have a friend help you. As a reminder it is always advisable to follow the rules on time to give the color full time to oxidize. The color itself will look as if it is turning too dark with any color but that is just the process of oxidation. Good luck.

Just wanted to say I'm taking the plunge this week and dying my virgin hair. The only thing I've ever done like this is a perm about seven years ago. It looked great on my almost knee length hair at the time, but when it was gone, I had shoulder length hair. Not fun.

Anyhow, I'm going to a convention where everyone does something a little bit extreme, so I decided to do purple streaks in the hair. Have no fear, though. I'm having a beautician friend do it for me. There's no way I'd try it by myself. I'll try to post pictures so you all can see it. Should be fun!

Thanks for the advice! I will try it with my friend this weekend. I know that the color looks darker, but last time I used this color it turned deep eggplant - I just wanted a lighter version which is why I rinsed it out sooner... It turned out perfect!

A while back I dyed it auburn red (mistake!) and have recently dyed over it blonde again. The result is that I have this lovely strawberry blonde hair colour that I love. It has a nice subtle red to it and a shiny meduim blonde. But I have no idea how to get it this color ever again. Can anyone recommend a good at-home hairdye in Strawberry blonde?

It just layer and layer of orangeish color that get light close to the end. My natural hair color is black so i dyed the orangeish part black (the one from herbal essence intincts watever, the raspberry darkest black) It was cool cause i never realize how my hair is really dark dark brown comparing to the hair dyed. But now my hair dyed is fading and on one side it more redish then the other side. Does anyone think I should A)color permenated black B)used the semi permenated herbal essence C)Let it fade until all black color out then dyed it?
I really wanted to highlighted using the cap lateron , like when Jan comes. Does anyone have any good brand that u could recommend for the highlighted? (by the way my hair length is to the middle of my boobs. I also wanted to get layer from chin down to the end. Does anyone have a good pic of layers hair?

I need some help. I want to bleach my hair (and leave it bleached; yes, I actually want that near white color), but I don't have any idea how to go about doing it. I've heard some really bad things about using peroxide and getting it professional done is just a tad bit too expensive. Also, another difficulty is that my hair is under a half an inch long at the moment. Can anyone tell me how to go about bleaching something that short?

I've been coloring my hair for like...seven years, now, and I've gone through every shade of red and brown imaginable. Actually, I started by "highlighting" my hair--my mom and I used the cap method, and every last bit of my hair was blonde. Not great when you're in seventh grade to suddenly pop in one day with a mega-blonde halo.

I'm not fond of Herbal Essences. I used it one time, and it turned bright clownish orange-red.

While I like the colors and the intensity of Feria, it does ruin your hair. Period.

When I'm broke, I'll buy the cheap Balsam Color--the cheesy green box on the bottom of the shelf. It's like $2.67 at W@l-Mart. I just use a good conditioner after I wash the color out, and I've never had a problem with it.

Otherwise--Garnier is probably my favorite. I've used 100% Color, Lumia and Nutrisse, and I really like all of them. They smell good and stick around, and don't make my hair all crunchy and gross.

Disclaimer: I am not a trained professional and I have had to shave my head because of horrible bleaching mishaps.

Having said that, I have had my hair the way you're describing (white blonde and short). The way I did it was this:

Go to Sally's (or whatever your local Beauty Supply store is) and buy a bottle of 40 volume peroxideb (sorry, but that's the only way) and a packet of bleach powder. They're always called something like "Ultra Blue 2000" or "Hi-lift Max." It'll be right there in the same section as the peroxide.

Then get a plastic bottle with ounce marks on it and some rubber gloves.

Finally, go to the shampoo section and get some purple shampoo--the kind that old ladies use to keep their white hair from turning yellow. Nexxus has a good one--it's very deep purple. Oh yeah, and get a super-ultra deep conditioner.

Follow the directions on the peroxide/bleach packages. You might have to bleach it multiple times. If so, you should probably wait a day in between. If your hair doesn't melt, it will probably look the way you want it to.

I've gotten some really nasty scabs on my scalp from doing this, so don't do this right before a big date or anything. And keep in mind that you really might destroy your hair completely.

It eventually got to the point where I had to cut it all off (to about your length Starry) because it was so dead it just came out in chunks, but if it's already short and you aren't trying to grow it out, maybe you don't care about that... It took about 2 years of constant bleacing to get that bad though. It will kill your hair and make it feel like straw, though, no matter what.

I dyed my hair black in august... then tempted to dye it light brown in october. it put a redish highlight colour in my hair... which looks fab. though the roots are a redish brown that looks kool to. BUT i want my Black OUT of my hair. Though i was thinking of stripping my hair myself with help from my mother. But scared if it will screw my hair UP! I'm not sure what to do. ~Angel

I answered your duplicate question in the thread that you started, but it looks like you found the right thread anyway. To paraphrase, I basically suggested you get it done professionally, to save on bad results, and having to get it fixed later.

I have naturally dark blonde hair, but for about a year I have been dying it light blonde. A few days ago I decided to try to go for a light brown. I bought herbal essences permanent hair color in a very light brown. I followed all the directions exactly, but my hair came out exactly the same color it already was, dark roots and all. For some reason, the color didn't work at all. So, I have two questions.
1. How long should I wait before trying to dye my hair again?
2. Since my hair is light, should I pick a darker color to get the right shade? Can anyone suggest a good brand/shade to use?

When it is too light or too gold, I mix equal parts of Clairol Born Blonde Toners -- Happy Honey and Winsome Wheat and my hair is fine. I do not like the highlighted look---it says to me: "here is my blond hair and here is my brown hair" I prefer an overall one color look--that is my preference. Thoughts?
Another topic: A friend of mine with the same base color does her hair at home. She buys two boxes of Loreal Preference in a very light blond color. She puts one box all over her roots and leaves it on for one hour. Then without washing her hair, she applies the second box all over her head, leaving it on for another hour--total of two hours. Her hair color is glorious. This is her method. Her condition is fine. Comments?

I have the same natural hair color as you, but I usually go darker (dark auburn), so I can't really offer specific advice on going lighter. I have heard of other people mixing two at-home colors and having good results but I haven't tried it myself. I did fry my hair once as a teenager from permaing and coloring too close together... so the idea of your friend leaving her color on for so long kind of scares me (I be afraid to try that myself). But if it has worked for her I won't argue! I know nothing about the "science" of hair dying.

Her condition may be fine whenever she leaves the color on her hair for that long. But your hair and her hair are wayy different, so you might not end up with nice hair after that, instead you might get fried ends or all over fried hair. Hair dye is not meant to be on your hair for that long at all. I recently screwed my hair up by trying to do it myself. I ended up having to cut off like 3-4 inches, and deep condition my hair twice a day to just get it to look good again. I think a lot of people on this site agrees with me whenever I say: Leave the hair dye and coloring to the pros, that's what they're there for. You might mess your hair up. I never thought I would mess my hair up doing it myself, and look at what happened, I got too carried away. But then again, you are not me, and I am not pro with hair, I just know a lot of them. To stay on the safe side though, I'd stick wiht letting the Salons do it. Pick out a good Salon, and just keep going to the same Stylist, she'll really learn about your hair and know what to do with it. Hope that helps.

help, help, help,

i just died my hair, oh i don't know, orange i guess, was going for the old blonde look, but every four years when i get this urge, i forget how bloody orange it comes out.........i have been "streaking" my hair with loreal, either blonde colours or highlighting kits and then just adding some dark "streaks" from loreal colours. This seemed to be working fine, but nooooooooooooooo, had to be all blonde, well, i can't go look in the mirror, because i have orangey-red hair, and want to cry..............can i buy something darker tommorrow and just kill it with a darker colour or will it all just fall out, damn grey hairs anyway.

i died my hair brown (my natural color is dark blond) anyway the brown faded and now it looks very orange and i want to go back to my original color.

should i go to a professional and get it stripped? (i only want to do this if it is necessary)

should i dye it a color close to my natural color and let it grow out?

or should i strip it myself (ive heard this is really bad for you hair...but is it really?) PLEASE HELP!!

browneyedgrl . You might find some helpful information in this thread about at-home hair coloring...based on what I've read there in the past, I would say save yourself the potential trauma of doing further damage on your own and go to a professional. It might be more expensive, but they'll know the best thing to do, and potentially save you the money of multiple-fixes down the road.

Good luck, whatever you decide!
