I've used about every single color out there from Castings to Feria and I just recently found one I really, really love.....Garnier Nutrisse. Very true color without a ton of fading. The color on the box is just what you get and after using it for two consecutive applications, the color didn't show up as super bright, just covered my roots and blended in with the old color perfectly. I do miss the conditioner tube in Feria though ....that stuff rocked. IP: Logged |

Anyone have any experience with henna? I hennad -let's pretend that's a word- my hair about a month ago. I like the results, it was a subtle all-over red tone & it's growing out well - but the process really disgusted me. That stuff looks and smells like goose poop. I mean seriously, if you've ever lived by a lake, it's just like spreading goose droppings in your hair. And now someone told me that using henna in your hair means that it won't hold other color? Is that true? Any henna fans out there? IP: Logged |

Ok, so my two girlfriends and I have figured out we can no longer afford salon highlights. We are thinking of doing the foil method on each other at home with some color from Sally's. 1. Has anyone tried this and if so what were your results? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Oh! And one of my girlfriends wants to know if anyone here thinks the all over color would be OK on hair that's already been colored? She went to a "Master Stylist" and he put the blonde all over her head.

quote: Well, it depends on what he used. If he used bleach to make her hair blond, I would suggest using a semi-permanent color (i.e. Natural Instincts). It will only last a few weeks and she'll have to keep doing it until her natural color grows out, but if she uses permanent color over bleached hair it could be trouble. Depending on how porous her hair is or what condition it's in, a permanent color may cause her hair to turn gummy. Believe me, you DO NOT want that to happen. However, if he just used regular permanent hair color, she could use another permanent color, but I would still advise using a semi-permanent at first just to see what the results are. IP: Logged |

Anyone, I don't remember the brand, but if you can get the pop-up precut foil sheets, they will make your life so much easier than if you have to slice up a roll of foil on your own. Especially wearing gloves covered in bleach. IP: Logged |

What about just touching up the roots. Noticed that my highlights are still in great shape, just need a root touch up with no clue on how to accomplish. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

I am a hairstylist and henna is very bad stuff. You basically can not do anything on top of it. Be very careful. And be careful with all the home coloring. Anything you do over and over again can be very hard on your hair and can be very tricky for a stylist to do corrections on. I specialize in color corrections and it makes it very hard when there are layers of everything under the color that is showing. Make sure to try and keep up with what you do so if at some point you need some professional help your stylist has something to base her formula on. Good luck. IP: Logged |

help! My hair was strawberry blonde until i got pregnant, now I dont know whether it would be considered dark blonde, or light brownish. I want my original color back, since my daughter has strawberry blonde hair, and i'm so sick of everyone asking who she got it from. I used the herbal essences highlights which lightened my hair to make it more reddish blonde. I just used natural instincts in strawberry blonde, but the only areas that look different and red were the parts that were previously hightlighted. I did the highlighting over the summer and it didnt wash out but rather grew out, so my roots stayed dark and the middle to ends of my hair took the color. I guess i have to try permanent color, but i'm not sure what shade to use. I want my hair to be lighter, will a lighter shade show up, since the natural instincts didnt? or is that only because its semi permanent? IP: Logged |

I've been dying my hair blonde for a long time. I used to use the Natural Instincts too! My mom said because it was only semi-perm. I should add a capful of the professional peroxide from Sally's. Did that and the color was more blonde but still pretty much the color on the box. It sort of defeats the purpose of the semi-perm color but if you LOVE that color, that's how I'd get around it. Also, I found because I have naturally dark blonde/light brownish hair that is REALLY brassy (think really dirty blonde), I have to go with something light to make a big difference with the brassy color and get more the color I want. every time I go to the supermarket or Priceline or ANYWHERE that has hair dye I resist resist resist and spend my hard earned cash elsewhere. My hair is so much healthier and shinier without ammonia, peroxide and their stinky, ouchy friends. Plus my boy doesn't like me changing my haircolour all the time, he notices slight variation in shade and he busts me every time IP: Logged |

I've been trying to quit my hair-dyeing habit (I've been getting gray hairs since the age of 15) and I have almost grown out all of the dyed part....it feels so nice and pretty, but I am getting BIG GRAY STREAKS in my hair!!! And I have very dark hair to begin with, so they stick right out. Every time I go to the store, my hand is just itching to grab the Nice & Easy....... Is there no such thing as hair dye that will not destroy your hair? (and not wash right out?) IP: Logged |

I've used the natural instincts semi-perm for blondes. I used the shade called Sahara (or something dessert sounding) because I have a problem with brassy hair myself. It would always do the trick. I realized that after dying my hair for so many years, I gotta buy decent shampoo for colored hair. I used to just use the cheapest stuff but my hair was just too try. Also, I use a leave in treatment after I shower and that make my hair feel fabulous even though it is dyed. IP: Logged |

Oh dear . . . my hair is currently the color of a yellow-orange crayon, and I could use some suggestions. A little background info: My hair (which I've been dyeing at home quite successfully for many years, and every possible color) has been reddish blonde for a while, and I was bored and thought I'd go platinum to mix it up a little. But after two rounds of 40 volume peroxide and bleach powder, the red still won't come out! I have a box of ash blonde dye in the cabinet. Can I use just the coloring component without mixing it with the peroxide? I'm a little nervous about putting more bleach in it. (My hair is very short, by the way . . . like an inch long). My mom turned her hair pink once. Sadly, the only thing she could do was to get her hair stripped and start over again. I was told once by the woman who cuts my hair that if I went too blonde too soon, my hair would turn orange because I have red tones. So, maybe that is something that occured with you. I don't know if it would be good to dye it again so soon. It might cause more problems. You might want to go to somewhere like Sally's and they could give you some advice! IP: Logged |

I have a hair horror story to share. I'd been having my dark hair highlighted with blonde streaks for quite a while when I decided to go back to my natural hair color. I really didn't want to spend the money to go to a salon, and I figured since I was just going w/semi permanent color, I'd do it at home. That was a really big mistake. FYI: If you've had your hair highlighted or stripped of your natural color, do not attempt to color it at home. The hair strands that have been stripped of color absorb WAY MORE of the at home dye than the rest of your hair. My hair was HEINOUSLY black. HEINOUSLY. A few hundred dollars later and five hours in a top-rated salon, it still wouldn't come up right. IP: Logged |

Ooh, I've made that mistake too (dyeing a color over blonde). Only it was my whole head, not just highlights. And it was red. . . . I have sort of fixed my current hair disaster by spending most of the day with blue shampoo soaking on my head. (The stuff that old ladies use to keep their hair from turning yellow). It has negated some of my yellow-orange-ness. Now I just look kind of gross up close, rather than shocking from across a parking lot. IP: Logged |

I just tried the new L'Oreal highlighting kit and my hair is now pumpkin orange. Background: I had been using Open or Hydrience for the past few years to color my hair light brown or red. So now my hair is bright orange and I don't know how to fix it! Are there any suggestions? How long must I wait till I can color again? And when i do, what color do i need? Please help! All suggestions are welcome! IP: Logged |

LTB, I had a similar experience before when I tried to lighten my whole head (I have dark brown hair and it seems that any lightening brings it to a neon orange state). A friend of mine put a light color over it, which looked fine, but I washed it the next day and the neon started to come out again. So I made an emergency trip to the store and bought hairdye to put over it. I think as long as you wait a day or so and dye it again you should be okay as long as you don't make it a regular habit. You might want to buy some good conditioner to use for a while, though, because the bleaching/highlighting has always made mine feel more like straw. Someone before had said that they sell the Feria conditioner at Sally's Beauty Supply, if you have one nearby. Edited to add: If you haven't dyed it already, you might want to do a shade or so darker than normal. The highlights will probably still look like highlights, but I've found that if I use a bit darker of a color they hold the color better. evelyn, Thank you for the tip! My hair felt like straw after the crap highlights so I am reconditioning it before I re-dye it. And will be hooked on thick conditioner for probably the next month. Any suggestions out there on a great shade to try (light to medium brown) or reliable brand? IP: Logged |

I just tried a new haircolor on Saturday- Garnier 100% Color. It's in a red box. I used Bright Auburn Brown, and I really like it. Not to mention that my hair felt sooooooo much better after I did it. Usually it feels kind of yucky until I put conditioner in it, but it feels nice and smooth since I colored it. The colors are supposed to be more intense than the Nutrisse & Lumia colors. Has anyone else seen this? Here's the website: http://www.garnier100color.com/us/ IP: Logged |

has anyone used the new hair color by loreal? its excellence Hi-color "for dark hair only". About two weeks ago i went to my local hair salon to get red streaks done in my hair. when i say red, i mean fire engine red. They did them using loreal red. No bleach was necessary. The color took directly to my dyed black hair and was very vibrant. But like you all know, red fades and now i am wanting ot dye all of my black hair a shade of brown. I drove to my local sally store and what do ya know? there is the EXACT red dye my stylist used on my hair. Along with a whole array of browns and blondes to use. I was just wondering if anyone had used the dye at home and how it worked? IP: Logged |

I have a question too. I have really light blonde hair (naturally dark blonde, but I've been lightening it at home for years.) I have tried going darker a few times, just for kicks (think light brown, not black.) The color always comes out really nicely everywhere except for my super blonde streaks around my face. Those streaks eat up all the color, usually ashy or whatever, and look sort of sagey or purply for a few days until it washes out. (Eventually most of the color washes out and I am back to blonde..but it's sort of fun for a while anyway.) My question is, is there anything I can put on my streaks before I put the color on so that they don't absorb? Vasoline, anything? Thanks!! IP: Logged |

I'm currently attempting to grow my hair out to its natural dark blonde color. For about a year I dyed it every two weeks with various shades of red ranging from vibrant red to almost purple. When I went to the salon to have it stripped and re-colored, I found out that there was no way to go back to my color without completely frying my fine hair. The stylist told me that while red dye fades the fastest, using cheap at-home dye rather than a salon quality dye makes the red cling to your hair due to various ingredients they put in the dye that salon dyes don't have. After stripping it twice, coloring it twice, and using the strongest bleach they had for highlights, I ended up with dark brown hair with gold highlights, which looked fabulous, but cost way too much. Now the dyed parts of my hair are back to an orangey color. Moral of the story: Be careful with red dye. It is the devil. IP: Logged |

I haven't colored my hair in years, but I'm probably going to do it in the next few weeks. I have medium-dark brown hair, but in the last month it has turned very auburn-y (is that a word?). No idea why, it just happened. I like red hair, but I have rosy-cool skin and the red just isn't cutting it. I want to go dark cool brown. Sorta like Catherine Zeta Jones. L'Oreal Open and Clairol Nice and Easy were both recommended to me by random people. Any other opinions? I don't want anything too strong or fake looking, or damaging. Just to get rid of the red. Karma, I've been dying my hair for years and years now, so I've tried pretty much every brand on the market. (Well, except Fer!a, because it will totally F up your hair-- DO NOT USE IT) Anyway, I've been using the new Revl0n 10 minute color stuff, and let me tell you, it rocks. Good color, doesn't wash out, quick to develop, and has nice gloves and a good thick conditioner that you can def. get more than one application out of. I haven't had much luck with the other two brands you mentioned... both had issues with coverage and washing out very quickly, even with using shampoo for color treated hair. (Always use it if you color your hair, it really does help maintain the color.) OH, and I also wanted to mention that your hair changing colors could be do to hormonal changes and age. IP: Logged |

I agree that if you don't want to go to a level 3 right off, the natural instincts is the best bet. I used that for years until I decided I wanted to use something that lasted longer than 3 or 4 weeks. I've been using the revl0n 10 minute hair color that lesilele mentioned. I agree, it's wonderful!! I've used all different brands (including fer!a that made my hair feel like straw... ick!) The 10 minute stuff dries my hair out some but with that great conditioner, it's fabulous. Plus, I only need to color my hair about every 6 weeks. I could go to 2 months between dyes but I just get bugged when I see the first little line of roots. IP: Logged |

I've been dyeing my hair at home for about 5 years now with Nice 'n' Easy. While it's a bit old school, it always turns out great! The first time I dyed it (from dark blonde to black), I used Feria because it was new. The color came out looking very matte, with no natural looking shine at all...and it was really dry. Quite a disappointment. Nice 'n' Easy leaves it really shiny every time and the whole process doesn't even smell that bad. The conditioner is a good one and leaves my hair really soft, especially when you stretch it out over several days. The best part is that they now include latex gloves that are pretty heavy duty and never get holes in them. That used to drive me nuts! IP: Logged |

i had the exact same product with herbal essence , it just bled and bled, i'v been using nutrisse and i don't ever remember being loyal to one brand. the colors come out the closest from what the box shows you and thus far i haven't had any surprises. i have medium-dark hair i think, its been so long since i'v see it. im currently looking for solutions such as tinted shampoo's to prevent brasiness and fading, (true color last between 2-3 weeks and i'd like it to last at least 4 like the box says it should.) anyone using pigmented shampoo's let me know or natural solutions, like the famous nicole kidman washing her hair with cranberry to keep the red would be appreicated.

Loreal began haircoloring long before any other company was ever established. This could tell you that they have aquired the most extensive research on coloring and can easily be trusted. If you are using a bleaching type of coloring (going from dark haircolor to blonde), your hair is going to be dry no matter what. AND DON'T LEAVE IT IN FOR LONGER THAN THE DIRECTIONS TELL YOU TOO. Leaving a bleaching product in your hair too long will only fry your hair more than necessary. Medium brown to black hair MUST be bleached before blonde colors can be introduced. The trick to keeping your hairs moisture is to increase the moisture you put back into your hair on a daily basis. Color defending shamppoos and conditioners aren't enough to restore moisture! You need a weekly moisture treatment like Neutrogena 5 minute Hair Mask, or a repairing hot oil treatment and daily leave in conditioner. I color and highlight my hair every six to eight weeks and it can get very dry and brittle. Neutrogena has a new product line called Triple moisture designed especially for dry and over-processed hair. I use Neutrogena Triple Moisture (TM) Cream Lather Shampoo and then TM Conditioner. I also use TM Leave-In-Cream (best for straight hair, TM Leave-In-Mouse is better for curly hair)after every wash. Once a week I use Neutrogena Hair Mask for five minutes to intensley replace lost moisture. And after styling my hair with the cold-air hairdryer I use TM Healing Shine Serum to smoothe out any rough patches. Neutrogena Triple Moisture products contain UV filters that help protect your color from the sun. It's a lot of work to care for colored hair, but my hair not only looks healthy, alive and shiny, it feels soft and natural and it's the color I love (Medum Ash blonde with tons of high and low lights-naturally brunette). Other tips for keeping your over-processed hair healthy are using a satin pillowcase to sleep (this minimizes breakage of the hair as your head can slide over the pillow more easily than cotton). Use a cold air hair dryer only to dry your hair 80-90% (warm air is okay for a few seconds here and there, hot air will fry your hair before it's even dry). Regular trimmings of split ends is more important with processed hair, so trim up to half an inch off your hair every time you color (hair grows aproximatley half an inch every 4-6 weeks). Wear a sunhat in the sun to completley protect your hair (if you want highlights use Sun-In or a peroxide cream (contains no color). Don't tie your hair back too tightly because your scalp does need room to move and this movement will stretch and break your hair if the hair is too tight. IP: Logged |
