Geez, is there anything that can be done to stop sinus pain?? I have had the worst headaches of my life in the past week and a half and nothing will help. Finally, it seemed to localize to my sinuses. I have horrendous pain around (above and below) my right eye, my right nostril, sometimes my right ear and neither advil or tylenol did a thing. I am really not that stuffed up (barely, just in the one nostril) so nasal spray was useless. I tried drixoral and it seemed to ease up for a couple of hours. Will this thing go away on it's own? I don't have a cold or anything and I'm just trying to figure out a way to "unblock" sinuses and release the pressure. Any ideas??? IP: Logged |

you could try taking sudafed, or motrin/ibuprofen. Both of these may alleviate sinus pressure in a person who doesn't otherwise have obvious congestion. edited to add: Have you had a cold in the past month or so? Does it hurt more if you lean forward like you're trying to touch your toes? If the answer to either of these is yes, there is a chance you have a sinus infection, for which you will need to take antibiotics. I've had ear and sinus infections all fall. Most of the OTC sinus meds are just combinations of Sudafed and some sort of a painkiller, so don't waste your money on them. I have been scolded several times already for not taking Sudafed regularly - apparantly it helps with the sinus congestion even if the nose is fine. Have you tried sitting in the tub or taking a long shower? The humidity seems to help clear it up somewhat. IP: Logged |

I am prone to getting sinus infections after a cold and that's what it sounds like to me rocyn. I hope you feel better soon.

It is much worse when I lean forward! I suppose this means I'll have to wait for a doctor's appointment. I just assumed I would have had to have a cold first to get a sinus infection? I've tried ibuprofen with no success. Drixoral makes my heart race and I feel slightly less pressure, but nothing significant. The pain on the right side of my face is intolerable. I've tried hot showers, I bought a "facial spa" thingy to inhale steam....no dice. My right eye is tearing up again and I have the temperament of a grizzly bear. I do have some congestion in my right nostril, but I guess I don't pay too much attention since I can breathe through the other side and since the rest of my face hurts so much. Well, at least if this is an infection, relief should be in sight after I get antibiotics, right? IP: Logged |

It does sound like a sinus infection. I use a neti pot (with salt water) for colds and sinus trouble, and find that it helps a lot. It's very soothing and clears everything out. Hope you're feeling better very soon, grizzly rocyn! IP: Logged |

Hmmm, I wonder where I could find a neti pot in Atlantic Canada? Grrr! IP: Logged |

The only thing that helps prevent my sinus headaches is Fl0nase nasal spray. *Vanna wave* Honestly, if I use it regularly, I don't get them at all. If I get them, my only recourse is excedrin, but beware its caffeine. I'm sensitive and if I have exced and coffee I'm hyped like sp0ngebob. IP: Logged |

Thanks pollyhyper! I missed that one. Here's the link to the older thread for reference, but I'm going to close it to avoid duplication (leaving this one open since it already has a lot of respnses). IP: Logged |

Okay, now I have post nasal drip and my husband said I was snoring (which is unusual). Maybe that's why I've been so incredibly tired this past week. Hopefully this will get cleared up soon. Decongestants make me really anxious and my heart races, plus they don't take all the pressure away. Thanks guys. Hoping to get an appointment at the after-hours clinic today. IP: Logged |

Wow, you guys are good! Saw a doctor tonight and indeed, a severe sinus infection. Prescribed Augmentin 875 for 14 days -- the pills are huge and pretty darned expensive for antibiotics too, but if it helps, I'll be happy. He suggested nasal irrigation to prevent further infection but I can't seem to get the liquid to run out of the opposite nostril! Is there are trick to this? I'm using Hydra Sense Nasal Care and it says to tilt head forward and to the left while spraying into the right nostril and the liquid should just go through your nasal passage and out the left nostril. It just came right on back out the right side. Any suggestions? Thanks for all the help! IP: Logged |

I’ve got a nasal irrigator thingy myself. I rarely can get the saline solution to run out the other side. Don’t worry about it. Even if it doesn’t do that it’s clearing up a lot of gunk out of your head. And after you’re cleared up a bit the saline will start to come out the other nostril. At least that’s been the case for me & my stuffy head. IP: Logged |

Ditto on the irrigation thing- if your left nostril is too stuffed up, the fluid can't get through. Keep trying, it should get a bit better daily- when it actually works, it is the weirdest sensation! Glad to hear you've seen a doctor. Had I noticed this thread earlier, I'd have advised it right away. I had an awful, agonizing sinus infection a few years back that I though I could cure myself with Tylenol Sinus and similar. Turned out that it spread, infecting my entire maximal sinus cavities (under the eyes) and face. My doctor told me (no joke) that such rampant infections can damage eyesight by putting so much pressure on your optical nerves and brain. Yikes! Glad you're on the path to recovery now, though IP: Logged |

I hear ya on the I wish I'd seen the dr and the ENT dr earlier. That toothache I'd been ignoring? classic sinus infection signal. Edited to say, if your tounge turns black, that's normal at least that's what the ent told me. Use a tounge scraper if it's really bothering ya. Yikes, why the heck would your tongue turn black? Also, thanks for all the great advice here. I too have been suffering from some major sinus pain, I took today off because of it, and its just now getting better. Do you all use the neti pot thing for irrigation? what else _could_ one use? Hydra Sense Nasal Care has a spout on it already. It's in the same section of the drug store as saline nasal sprays. IP: Logged |

My tongue turned black as the bacteria in my sinuses was killed by the antibiotics and fell out. It cleared up in under a week, but was nasty disconcerting at the time. IP: Logged |

I totally forgot about it till now, but J also drinks "Traditional Medicinals Breathe Easy Tea" to help his sinus congestion. Sometimes they sell it at the grocery store and sometimes you need to go to a health food store. I can't stand the taste of licorice so I've never tried it, but he says it "helps and makes him feel silly too." IP: Logged |

I just read in Prevention magazine that you should hum for 10 minutes every day to prevent sinus infection and ease pressure from those you already have. Apparently, it moves air through the sinus cavities? Interesting... IP: Logged |

I can relate to all the pain everyone has talked about in this thread- as an early Christmas present I got an really severe sinus infection. I was getting really horrible headaches, localized mainly over my left eye. Nothing was working at all, and they were so bad I couldn't concentrate on anything. Then my left eye started to swell up. It got huge, it literally looked like someone had punched me in the face. So- some really strong antibiotics, and a nasal rinse. I actually started to cry in the doctors office, partly since my head and face hurt so bad, partly because I was so relieved that I was going to get better. He said the headaches would last 'till the antibiotics kicked in, so prescribed me Vicodin. Whew, what a Christmas all doped up on that stuff! He said I really shouldn;t use a nasal spray or decongestant- they dry you up and make things worse. He said the sinus rinse is best. The sinus rinse really made a difference. I like the kit he had me buy- it's all pre-measured and the bottle squirts it right up there. And, I knew it was working. You are leaning forward and see the liguid that is coming out- and this may be TMI, lots of green mucus would come out when I was rinsing my infected side. Uck, but it actually made me feel better knowing I was getting it out of my system. Anyway. My headaches are gone, the swelling in my eye went down, and I'm feeling so much better. Oh and if anyone is interested- the sinus kit I'm using (and probabally will contiue to use since it's seems I'm breathing better than I ever have through my nose) is here: www.sinusrinse.com IP: Logged |

Oh lucky me.... Not a week after I finished those antibiotics, the pain is back. I was already taking a really strong antibiotic, and took the entire thing as prescribed (14 days) so I don't know what's next. Just want the pain to stop. Grrr! IP: Logged |

ok, so from reading this thread and the other one about sinus pain, i think i might have an infection. i called my doc, but can't get in until tomorrow morning. i went home early from work yesterday and it looks like i'll be staying home today too. i feel like there is an ice pick stabbing me in the head, and when i did the bend-over-to-touch-your-toes thing, it felt like someone inside my head was punching the inside of my skull. ugh. going to lay down...edited to add that where my glasses fit on my nose only adds to the pressure and pain. blah. i've got fl0nase too, but i haven't used it very much, really only when my allergies were bugging me. i had nas0nex last summer and i think that worked better for me. i did the fl0nase earlier this morning, no relief yet. took some ibuprofen too. and i take cl@ritin daily. IP: Logged |

Quarkiegirl, get a pillowcase or something, put some (dry) rice in it, tie it up, and stick it in the freezer. After it's cold let its soothing coolness heal your face. IP: Logged |

i went to cvs and bought some of the squirt-up-the-nose saline stuff. it feels so weird! my sinuses still hurt, but it was very cool and soothing. IP: Logged |

Just be careful, I've heard some of that stuff can be addictive. IP: Logged |
|
quarkiegirl Housemate |
nope, this stuff's just a plain saline rinse, unmedicated. it says right on the front that it's not addictive. did i mention how fun it is to squirt stuff in your nose and watch it come out the other side? it's awesome! IP: Logged |

ok good. sadly, i'm no good with liquid in the nose, so i don't do the nasal sprays. i can't help but snarf them. IP: Logged |

tangent: is the proper word to describe something you get addicted to "addictive" or "addicting"? i always thought it was addictive, but so many people say addicting. is addicting even a word? i'm so confused. IP: Logged |

That was the cheapest I found online, I looked around. Re: nasal sprays -- I can't stand spraying anything up my nose, but sometimes nasal spray is the only thing that helps when I'm solidly congested. I notice I get terrible congestion at night around springtime every year, and use nasal spray pretty consistently - it feels like I need it, but once fun congestion time is over, I really don't use it at all. I am singing the praises of the SinuFix. I dunno if it's just a coincidence, but it arrived about the time I had one of the worst sinus headaches I've ever had (and that's saying something!!) - I started taking it regularly, and I haven't really had any sinus pain since. It says to take 2/day during times that your sinuses are really bad, and I've done so on days when I felt like a headache was coming on, and the pain has always gone away. Woohooo!!!! IP: Logged |

Bekkaboo, J is having major sinus issues today, so if you aren't having any problems, it must be the Sinufix....working for you...but not for him... He's such a snothead.

I don't really have snot problems, just sinus pain that makes me feel like I need to drill a hole in my FACE to relieve the pressure. The last headache I got lasted 36 hours and was so bad I was tempted to take several sleeping pills and see how long I could knock myself out for. I've only been taking it for not quite a month, so I don't wanna say yeah, it's definitely working, but I have pretty frequent sinus pain, and I notice the major pain seems to coincide with sudden major changes in the weather. There have been a few of those, and I seem to have gotten away without any pain at all. So, it seems to be working - let's hope so anyway. IP: Logged |
