LOL...I was going to post the same thing earlier, but decided against it. Good thing; since I didn't remember it correctly (I always thought it was "I don't know, Alaska!" but your version makes a lot more sense).

Ha...and it goes even further:
She's wearing a New Jersey

Our state bird is the chicken... ok, the "blue hen" and they actually sell postcards here that say "dela.....WHERE?" across the front of them. But being the first state we did get the first new state quarter... with a chicken on it i believe.

it IS beautiful here though--i don't want to steer anyone away that may be thinking of visiting!

YIPEEEEEE!

another Dela-weanie here!

so what i haven't actually lived in DE for a decade, i am sort of from there. i went to middle and high school in glorious Newark. That's New-Ark, NOT pronounced like that other city in New Jersey, thank you very much.

I spend three summers in Bethany Beach after high school. Most of my DE friends have moved out of there too and I get lost every time i go back to Newark because the roads have changed so much, thanks MBNA.

YAY! I was feeling so alone, it's so nice to hear of someone from Delaware. I moved to Lewes,DE at the beginning of high school in 1990, and got the heck out of here as soon as I graduated by moving to NYC and attending NYU. Then a few years later I moved to Wilmington for a year, then to Newark (yes, New-ARK, thank you!!!) for 3 or 4 years. Now I'm back in good old Lewes... this place has changed a lot, in Newark and down at the beach. Route One is FULL of outlet malls...I don't know when the last time was you were here but it is a whole new scene. I am a real estate appraiser down in Sussex County and the property values are RIDICULOUS.

I know what you mean about MBNA. The apartment complex in "Ogletown" (land of Ogles--watch out!) that my boyfriend grew up in got swallowed up by them. They are EVERYWHERE!!!

Also they renovated the Deer Park and it will never be the same again. Sad Sad Sad.

hee hee, the Deer Park

As long as they don't try to renovate Towne Court, everything will be fine. I moved away in '93 and it seems like there have been HUGE changes since then. I think they have demolished almost every building on Main Street and built a mini mall in its place.

Remember Outer Limits? the homemade ice cream place (Patty's?), when Rainbow was in the old building? When the diner was still called Jimmy's. Maybe I am dating myself here. I don't even know what it is called now.

Maybe this thread should be called The Homogenization of Small Town America.

Anyway, I got out and went to school in NY, but at the poor man's NYU, SUNY Stony Brook. That and I probably know you, or people you know, so I will email you at the addy in your profile. We ARE talking about DE after all. I think there are only 2 degrees of seperation in THAT small a place. Of course, I moved there from Rhode Island, the only smaller state.

**edited to add that I was just talking to some of the girls at the DigsMeet in NYC about how I wanted to start a DE thread, but I would end up getting too depressed watching it sink lower and lower on the most recent update list.

Oh and The Family Thrift Center on Rt 4 in Newport. THE PREMIER THRIFT OUTLET.

Lots of good thrift shops around still, anyone in the area let me know and i'll give you addresses.
Outer Limits is called something else now and has moved but it's still the same long-haired guy...forget his name...who owns it.

Fatty Patty's got closed down b/c the building started falling apart...

Rainbow moves from building to building, can't make up their mind....

some things that have been there a while.... Stone Balloon, Newark Newsstand, Camera's Etc. (worked there for a while), Deer Park (now a nice clean place to eat over-priced bar food--WHO NEEDS IT?!), The East End (which I sorely miss)...

but the rest of the area has changed a lot. they've redone everything except the roads.

oh i forgot i also lived a year in Pine Brook...time flies!

Hey, I was just in Rehoboth Beach last weekend! One day of sun on Friday then 2 days of rain over the weekend. It was all good though. A friend in college had a shirt that said Dela-Where? and everyone always liked it.
Just wanted to say hey from your noVA neighbor!

For those not yet in the know, Rehoboth Beach is a very popular gay resort town. On the other hand, they also have a family-oriented image, so it makes for an interesting mix. I personally have never been to gay bingo myself but to describe it: imagine regular bingo and then replace all the old ladies with a bunch of gays and lesbians, and replace the cheezy bingo prizes with...more interesting prizes. My lesbian friend once won "the tongue." As in the kind that takes batteries.

Tempest Fugit is still in Reho but not on Penny Lane...and the owner has turned into quite a snotty little middle-aged woman.
The costume store is also gone...

Went into Reho a few weeks ago and we TRULY STRUGGLED to find someplace to buy a funnel cake!!!! What is this world coming to?!

yes, sorry for not showing my DE pride earlier as I had not yet stumbled upon this thread....that's my excuse anyway and i'm stickin' to it. How funny if i would have come across it by accident and found it was started by you!! I am not originally from DE but it has sucked me in like quicksand using school as its lure and now i fear i can never escape. So what the hell...hooray for tax-free shopping!! Hoooray for punkin' chunkin'!!! Hooray for the first state!!! Who decided that would be DE's slogan? We couldn't come up with anything else interesting to be our claim to fame, but, hey, we're the...um...FIRST!!! Yeah! The FIRST state!!! R.I.P. old Deer Park....

How can driving down the smallest state seem to take so very long? It has gotta be one of THE most boring rides EVER. Is anyone else aware of the "time warp" that occurs just below Dover, till you pass Milford. Sometimes this part of the trip takes 10 minutes, other times it seems to last FOREVER.

Manmarie, hope the rednecks didn't scare ya or kill ya or tie ya to the bumper of a Ford F-150 covered with NASCAR stickers. Did you survive ok?

hi! i'm still alive and my "weekend in DE" was delayed until RIGHT NOW.

well, I'm in Philly at the moment and was in Newark Sunday. I'm heading down to Smyrna this afternoon to visit a friend. I think we are going to go to Bombay Hook.

I went to the Family Thrift, but I had to pee really bad so I didn't stay that long and I was grumpy so I decided not to buy that "Hootenanny" Folky music record.

Mmmmm, Smyrna DIner Garlicy, Cheesey Homefries.

My poor mother drives to Dover every day from Md. That, to me seems like the longest. drive. ever. Laurel, Harrison, Georgetown, Seaford, Milford. yuck, yuck, yuck.

Heck, why not buy 2 or 3?! Those places are AWESOME. Ocean City is really close. Haven't spent much time there since high school--that's where we went when there weren't any "hotties" hanging around Rehoboth/Dewey.

If you are down here this week and have lots of free time to spend on the beach, you are VERY LUCKY, and I, sitting at my desk staring out the window at this beautiful day, am VERY JEALOUS.

Don't forget your sunscreen!

Question for you all, it's been too long for me to remember and why ask family when you ask Digsters!

I know the ferry goes from Cape May to Delaware, but is there one that goes across to MD or VA? A bridge? Some way of cutting the DC corner?

I think you can drive dead south on Rt 13 along the coast and not go through DC at all. Looking at my trusty map, you can take Rt 1 (picked up in Lewes, where the ferry comes in from NJ) to Rt 13 (there are a few turns involved) and end up in Virginia Beach by way of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

I'd have to look at a map as it's been a while since I traveled South but I was just about to say Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel. BTW, that tunnel is so long, it could give one a panic attack.

I stumbled in on just the right day! Crowjoy, you have to stop in and say hi with the babies! It will work perfectly into my master plan, also known as BABY 2007 (when I want our first one). All you have to do is let M hold one of ze babies and we're all set! hee hee!
Anyway, just wanted to throw in my plea for you to visit us in lovely Falls Church, VA, but I'll understand if you want to skip out on DC.

edited because I can't even spell the name of my town...oy

Crowjoy, they're right. Route 13 to the Bay Bridge Tunnel. I drove that way from work in NJ last summer. The Bay Bridge Tunnel thing is like 17 miles long, and I didn't have a cell signal on the whole thing. But I didn't go through DC at all.

Hey I didn't notice this thread before!! Whoa the memories you guys are bringing up for me I lived in Delaware the first 27 years of my life - have been in PA for the last 3.

I lived off Kirkwood Hwy in Wilmington growing up, then moved about 5 min from MBNA in Newark (lovely traffic during rush hour).

I went to Padua lol

Everytime I drive through (my rents still live there) my chin's always hitting the floor. Cannot BELIEVE how built up it's gotten.

I hear ya on the property prices in Sussex. I remember when Middletown and Smyrna were considered No Man's Land.

Hmmm, more memories...how about the Big Kan-a-Tuna? lol

Hooray! I knew there were more Delawareans lurking around!
New Castle County really has built up. Even 5 years ago, Middletown WAS no-man's land! Now it's a hoppin little town full of soccer moms.
The congestion up there really got to me after a while and I was glad to move back down to Lewes. But since 4th of July weekend came and gave me a nervous breakdown, Newark is starting to sound very soothing.

ok, so you can tell i don't go out much, because apparently this has been going on for at least since the beginning of summer, but does everyone know about the latest fad that has hit Dewey Beach, a.k.a. "Suds" (sorry beckaroo they beat you to it!) It's a bar that fills up with suds (bubbles)--apparently this has been quite popular in Asia and Cancun, Jamaica, etc. for some time.

Also the television station "E" filmed a show (I think called "Wild on E"???) in Dewey this weekend. WILD.... i don't watch it.

hee hee... WILD ON in Delaware.. yeah Dewey Beach, when someone says they have been there, they are basically telling me that they were in a fraternity. Frat boy heaven. I went through there, but hardly ever stopped.

Of course, I spent my high school/ college summers in Betahny Beaach, "the quiet resorts". Consequently my friends would be followed around, search, and harrassed by the cops all day when they came to visit. I was once pointing out the planet Jupiter (Astronomy major) to my roomate when we were taking a walk and a cop told us: "likely story, you are obviously scoping out the open window on the third floor of that house." "Uh, no, officer, with all due respect, we are much more interested in the planets."

My friend (i think Polly knows him, Buzz) spent a night in the Betahny Police station basement for allegedly transporting my sister (who had no ID on her, so they assumed she was a minor) over state lines. She was actually 21 at the line. A few years earlier he was threatened with arrest for having those little firecrackers that PoP when you throw them on the sidewalk. My roomate and I had a race to see who would get more parking and other police fines throughout the summer. I was summoned for jay walking on several occasions, and proudly, for peeing in the street (TMI)

oh the memories.

I've never been to a suds club but have always wanted to. They look CRAZY FUN on tv

I haven't been to Dewey since I was 21 or so...

I kinda miss Delaware beaches, but I like the Jersey shore better just because there's more 'beach'.
