It's so weird, when I was in high school, nobody knew where Delaware was, let alone Rehoboth. Since then I have met people from all over that have summered in Rehoboth, including my childhood best friend's brother and sister (separately) who live in upstate NY.

I can give you all sorts of advice in the Lewes-Reho-Dewey area as far as restaurants, bars and shopping. What are you into?

Down in Bethany/Fenwick I don't know as much but I still know of a few.

You're gonna love it here, once you get used to the COMPLETE BOREDOM of the off-season.

Edited to add: I CAN NOT BELIEVE they are opening this restaurant here.

well i need to know good thrift shops.. good restaurants(not too expensive) we like every kind of food, really. What bars are good for music or just hanging out? Anything fun or interesting to do.. anything you enjoy doing? any great stores i should know about besides south moon under-- i love it but it is v.expensive.

polly- i have no doubt i will like living there, whenever i am down there visiting my in-laws i am so relaxed and at peace. i am def. burned out of the city!

also, with the company i am going to work for the busy season is the winter, the summers are kinda dead- which will work out well because we can work hard all winter and have relaxed days in the summer.. ideal!!

My favorite thrift shop in Lewes-Rehoboth area is "New Life Thrift Shop" on Route One. There is a Salvation Army on Route One in Reho but sometimes they mark things up a bit too much.
There's a great thrift shop closer to you that I haven't been to for a while. It's in the Bethany area -- Roxana, I think. I'll have to check on the name. Cheap cheap cheap.
There are lots of churches in DE and lots of them have thrift shops. Also the Rehoboth Convention Center has an annual flea market with a 1penny entrance fee. Some of the vendors mark up high, some don't. It's a lot of fun, though, and probably coming up soon.
The only restaurant I really know in Bethany is Red Fin, which is a pricey and delicious seafood (but fancy, not crabshack) restaurant.
In Rehoboth, my favorite restaurants, to name a few:
Pricey:
Celsius
Blue Moon
Victoria's
Back Porch
Big Fish Grill
Planet X

Mid-Range to cheap:
DogFish Head (also good bar, sometimes good music)
Sir Guy's (great Hot wings)
Adriatico
Tijuana Taxi (Mexican)
Cultured Pearl (Japanese)
Arena's (sports-bar style, bar & lots of sandwiches)

And that's just Rehoboth. My lord, no wonder I can't lose weight--there are too many good restaurants around here!

Lots of these restaurants run specials in the off-season on certain nights, like DogFish head has $5 pizza (good, brick-oven type) nights on Thursdays in off-season. i can email you the list I have if you like.

Stores: Well, i don't get to do much shopping now unless you count Home Depot or Ace Hardware, but some of my fave stores in Reho:

-Tempest Fugit - cool clothing, housewares, jewelry, but has gotten a bit pricey lately. Used to carry lots of Betsey Johnson
-Sunshine Octopus - very hippy-ish
-Lotions & Potions
-Silverworks - jewelry
Ummmm...I'm sure I can think of plenty more. Oh and of course the god-awful outlet malls.

Ooh, Thrift Stores! Polly, are you talking about the thrift store that is only open, like 3 hours a week on route 26 (i think) near bethany beach? god, i loved that place. stuff for 33 cents. you can't beat that. I still have clothes that I bought there 12 years ago. Also in Bethany there is (i hope it's still around) Echo Books. Its also on route 26 about 1 mile from Route 1.

And the Family Thrift Center in Newport is certainly worth the drive from down on the shore.

There are lots of outlet store in Rehobeth and I can't wait to get down to good ol' Bethany to go to Clouds For Kids because I used to work there. They had THE NICEST children's clothing.

Okay, now I am sufficiently homesick.

Hi Manmarie!! When are you due?

Yeah, I keep meaning to compile a useful list of ALL the thrift stores in Dellywhere. Maybe that could be a project for this thread.
I can't remember if that thrift store is on 26 or.....um.....what's the road where Hocker's is...17??? Anyway, it definitely sounds like the same store, hardly ever open (which is why I haven't been there for a while) and CHEAP!!!

We used to go to that ghetto movie theater in OC, up at the North End of the strip on the highway, when I was in high school. They'd show second run movies for $2. And nobody paid attention, you could smoke in there (they still had the ashtrays built into the seats--pretty sure we weren't TRULY allowed to smoke, but nobody ever said anything) and sneak in booze.....um....not that I ever did such a thing. I'm a good girl....HAH!

Someone gave me a book once that had little "thrift tours" for the area - a list of all the thrift stores w/maps, etc. I'll look for it when I get home - I'm pretty sure it had PA and Delaware.

Polly, Hockers is on 26, i think. Let's see, its been maybe 6 or 7 years since i've been down there...but I need to get to Bethany to buy some baby clothes (due late June/Early July). Mabye if the planets are alligned corretly I'll catch that Thrift Store when it is actually open. Lets see, it was hard to get there when I lived 5 minutes away, so now that I live 7 hours away I have a much better chance!

Anyway, we have to be thinking of the same one, lets see I remember a lumber store around there too, and well, let's face it, there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING else in that area....

Tags, don't feel guilty toward your parents or your work peers. You are doing what you need and want to do. They'll get over, or at least used to, it. Plus you're really not moving very far, and like I said before, once summer comes and they have a free place to stay at the beach, I bet you won't hear them complaining anymore!

Let me know if there's anything I can do, either post or email me. I've had my Messenger off the past few days b/c i have a heavy workload (but I still find time to check email and boards!)

If it makes you feel better, I've been eating Delaware chickens all week and I'm fine.
The avian flu that they have discovered in DE and now NJ poultry is different than what has been killing people in Asia.
But countries are banning our yummy chickens, so they're all going to mass slaughter for NOTHING. Well, I guess to be on the safe side....

The more I hear news about such things, the gladder I am to e a vegetarian.

I remembered the name of my thrift store book, it's called "The Thrift Store Maniac's Guided Tours" - but it really doesn't have much of DE in it, mostly PA. I couldn't find one online, either, I think it was mostly sold in local thrift stores. Cool idea, though, maybe you SHOULD do one for DE, Polly!

Sooooooo weird, Tags, I was JUST thinking about you! I was wondering how you were acclimating to your new Eastern Shore lifestyle. How's the house? Have you spent a lot of time in Delaware? We should gather our courage and arrange a one-on-one digs meet! What's your work schedule like...and on that note, where are you working? Edited to add, working from home, I see. So your schedule's pretty flexible? Me too! Maybe I could ring you up next time I have an appointment in Fenwick or something, and we could grab some coffee?

I just asked my mom about Cape Market, b/c I haven't been there yet, and she said it's an auction, but it's crappy. I asked "crappy good, or crappy bad?" to which she replied, "I think it's crappy bad." Oh well.

I can't believe it's almost Memorial Day. I'm not ready to deal with the traffic.

I WISH I could avoid Route 1 this weekend. I did all last weekend, but this weekend is my brother's graduation party at my parents' house in Lewes, so I'll be travelling with the pack.
Other than that, though, I'll keep off the hwy.

I'm trying to think of cool places in OC--it's been so long since I've spent a lot of time there. There used to be a cool biker shop way down at the bottom, beach block I believe, b/w 1st and 5th (sorry so vague) that sold other stuff like Manic Panic and t-shirts and the like. And then there was (is??) always Chat Street.

There were some ancient t-shirt shops on the boardwalk that had tons of ancient decals from the 70's, but I would guess they got swallowed up there as they did here.

chat street was torn down i believe - like 2 weeks ago. yes i am looking for some old rock t-shirts like rolling stones etc- used and all beat up. i got some when i was in chicago last year- and my cousin used them to make these awesome shirts and was able to get them picked up by a store in chicago and i was looking for more for her and for me i think i got them for like $1 each there - it was a good deal.

how far do you have to travel this weekend? i cant avoid rt 1 either since i need to take it in order to go anywhere- but i only have to go like 12 blocks to get off the island
