Haven't hit "Suds" yet... I too try to stay away from the whole Dewey "scene." I have a few friends there but other than the occasional visit to them i hardly ever go into Dewey. I was living in NYC and then Newark during the years where I imagine Dewey would have been the most fun...I got my drunk on, just not there. I can only handle so many bleach blonds with fake tans and their boobs hanging out at once. (Same goes for the guys there, sans boobs)

I wonder how one keeps from slipping and breaking one's ass on the floor @ Suds. Or what if you want to sit down? From pix I have seen it looks like the suds hit around my shoulders!

I know you get soaking wet from suds parties, but no clue on how it's not a safety hazard...

Hi Delaware peeps!

As always, I knew I could find help on the DigsBoards.

This is going to sound like a very bizarre request, but hear me out. I am a law student in CT, and am going through the arduous ordeal of applying for jobs for next summer. Since the market is so tough, and I am not terribly connected to any one location, I am applying to firms all over the northeast. CT, NY, RI, PA, and DE, mostly.

I am drawn to DE firms because there is so much corporate work there, and I especially want to go into tax practice. However, since I grew up in NY and go to school in CT now, I had to fib a little and tell firms in my cover letters that I have ties to the state of DE (firms want assurance that you really want to practice in their state after graduation, so that they don't spend a summer training you just to have you jump ship a year later once you land a big city job in NYC, Chicago, DC, wherever.)

The problem is, I *don't* have any ties to DE. I have driven through it, but that was years ago. I'd basically move anywhere for the right job, but if a prospective employer asks me about DE I don't want to sound like the fibber I am. So, if any of you would be so kind as to give me a general idea of places in DE, things to do, particularly in and around Wilmington, I'd be your best friend.

I know I sound retarded or just really sneaky. But I'm not, I promise. Reading this thread has made me think I'd like living there...and another thing- how hard do you think it'd be to find a summer sublet within a decent driving distance from Wilmington? Ideally I'd love to live by the beach, but maybe that'd be too spendy.

Any help appreciated!! Thanks tons

it shouldn't be hard convincing them that you know delaware. problem is, there's not a whole lot to do in wilmington. or at least that was the case when i lived near there. the businessey part of the city all shut down at 5pm. most little cafes and shops closed when the white-collars went home. I guess there is a little more nightlife now, the big kahuna, which is a big bar that has concerts every once in a while.
everyone i know in wilmington goes to philly for fun.
the christiana mall is the biggest shopping spot in the area. there is no sales tax in DE so people come from PA and NJ. Main Street in Newark is where the university is. There are some cafes and small resturaunts there, as well as bars like the Stone Balloon. Most of my friends who work in Wilmington still live in Newark.

I hope this helps, you are right that there are tons of corp law jobs there as EVERYONE incorporates in DE because of lienient tax laws. I, however haven't been back that much in the past 5 years and when I do go back, I usually get lost. I started avoiding Main St because it has changed too much. The Family Thrift Center in Newport, however, hasn't changed a bit.

That's great, thanks very much for the tips. Do most people who work in Wilmington live in the surrounding area? Any particular suburbs?

The fact that Newark is pronounced New-Ark is very helpful. Otherwise I would have assumed it was just like NJ!

hee heee, that may have clued them in right away.

i wouldn't worry that much. More young people are moving to Wilmington these days, but most aren't 'from' Delaware. In fact most people in New Castle County have moved there in the past ten or fifteen years. I don't have any real data to baack that up, but i'm fairly certain that the census would back me up. There has been rapid growth in the banking, credit card industries and that has brought people in from all over.

Good Luck!

OK let's try this again.

What I was trying to tell you before was that apparently, before the race riots hit in the 60's, Wilmington was actually a nice place to live. Market Street used to be the place to be on weekends, where you'd take the family and spend the day. Both my mom and grandmother were born and raised in Wilmington and the city they tell me stories of is nothing like the one I lived in a few years ago. After the race riots, no one bothered to try to bring all that back, I guess. But they are trying now. The Riverfront project is the biggest thing so far. They are also trying to revitalize Market Street. The art school I went to (DCAD) is right on Market and 6th.

There is a community north of Wilmington called Arden which is very artsy-hippie and cool to visit. www.ardenartists.com

But the place for cool kids like us to be in Wilmington is Trolley Square. Nice shops, restaurants, bars. Major shopping is found either on Rte 202 (Concord Pike) or on Kirkwood Highway.

Newark caters more to the college- and grad- age crowd. The main bars in downtown Newark are the East End and the Deer Park. Note from previous posts that I refuse to go to the Deer Park any more. But it is still a hot spot.

Finding a summer sublet in the Wilm-Newark area probably wouldn't be hard seeing as everyone leaves for the summer to go to the beach, which, by the way, is about a 1-1/2 hour drive minus traffic problems.

Also, my grandfather as well as my boyfriend's father and my mom's childhood friend are all lawyers in Wilmington so if you let me know what firms you apply to I'll let you know if any of them are the same, and you can say you "know" me.

Delaware is very corporation-friendly, so many companies set up headquarters (or at least an address here) Remember the movie Fight Club, w/the plethora of banks, etc? That was supposed to take place in Delaware--though they never came out and said it, they did drop some local town names throughout. Most banking/corporate headquarters are in New Castle County, which is the northmost of our 3 (count 'em!) counties. OC is south of Delaware which would put you, unless you felt like making a long commute, working at the bottom/beach end of the state. But that's not to say that there aren't any jobs down here. The closest "city" to you would be Salisbury, MD or Dover, DE...but I guess for work like yours you may not need to commute every day? I have a friend who does web design and he's got a steady stream coming in.
As far as the general job market, there's plenty to go around, mainly in retail, though. Ah the joy of living surrounded by outlet malls in the state with no sales tax.
If you have a place to live, you are one step ahead, as that's one of the harder things to find. Lots of rentals are seasonal in the southern part of DE, and in OC, and pricey.
If you're interested in finding out more, email me.

Most of my graphic design / visual arts minded friends have headed north to Philly. U of D has a good Visual Communications program, so I seem to know quite a few unemployed VC grads from New Castle COunty. The only one that I can think of that is working in that field does graphic design and computer stuff for a small record label out of wilmington. There seems to be less career opps in design down further south. A friend in Dover writes study guides, but as Polly mentioned, most of the BIG companies (and non-agrarian economy) are about two hours north of OC.

My mom lives in Salisbury and the university seems to be a major employer there.

Good Luck!

For those of you who may be interested, Delia's has a t-shirt that says "Dela....Where?" on it in their recent catalog.

Are you serious? They've been selling those shirts around here forever. And now Delia's is probably selling them for 5x as much! Just have to vent, I love Delia's stuff and I wish it would all fit me but they overcharge....and what do they have to do with Delaware anyway?
Edited to add that I just checked it out online and you know, that's a pretty cool shirt. Also they seem to have a few state shirts. But $24 is a bit steep.

I guess it's like Urban Outfitters and "trendy" shops all over the country that sell the "I heart NY" shirts. I see them and laugh- you can buy any size, color, and style of that shirt for $10 (or cheaper) on any main street in Manhattan.
I wish someone would come up with a "Connecti...what?" shirt

Byte Size is a webdesign company thats downtown...I thought they were the only game in town but I guess they aren't. I just know a lot of the people who work there. I've heard that you can teach at WorWic so long as your MA is in progress. I have a few friends who have done that. I don't think it pays well, but usually adjunct positions don't (that's the same sad situation I'm in at SU)

SE Delaware just FINALLY got cable internet and I think a lot of areas have DSL. Not sure about OC area/South of state line.
They're probably run through Comcast, so you could go to the Comcast site and find out.

I have DSL through Verizon. I think you can get cable, but thats just happened recently in Ocean City. West OC and Ocean Pines have had it for awhile.
Byte Size runs their website through www.oceancity.md. If you click on "Internet Services" it will take you to their info. I know Emmet and Tony, and they both like it there a lot. Its very very laid back. I'm sure you can just email the office manager. The address is on the website.
I love teaching at SU. My friends think its wild that I get up at 6am HAPPY that I'm going to work. I'm going to be so sad when my contract is up next December. I wish they'd let me stay, but I have to leave to make room for a new crop of graduate students. *sigh*

I'm not planning to stay here. The money for teachers just isn't worth the cost of living in my opinion. I'm going to apply pretty much everywhere within a 5 hour drive of here. I'd really like to move to the Baltimore/Annapolis area. I like it there a lot.
