The sad part is I had a mental block creating this topic on how to spell the name of my state. I think I need to go home from work!

Anyway, anybody here from Wisconsin? Milwaukee specifically? I've seen mention of locals here and there on the board, but I don't know who all is still around

I went to college in Milwaukee (marquette) and miss it desperately, as I am currently living in Nebraska. I think there are some sporadic Wisconsin-ites on the boards... I know Jessicazee is in Milwaukee, but I'm not sure who else!

What do you do in Milwaukee? Student/worker bee/both/neither? If you have any job connections, send them my way... I would love to move back!

I'm working at Blue Cross Blue Shield as an Admin. Assistant. I want to go back to school to finish my degree - I went to UW-Whitewater for 4 years and want to finish up at UWM but neither school seems too thrilled at the prospect of letting me back in, ha ha

Hee, UWM didn't like me either. But I was rather slack-assed in college, and really had no experience affording me entrance to a Master's program. Without the grades, that is.

Wow, that's so cool! what area do you live in?

Yeah, I'm having the same problem. I dropped out of UW-Whitewater 3 classes short of my degree with a really crappy (think under 2.0) gpa. Now that I actually care (somewhat) about school, I want to finish up at UWM and get that durned BA, but due to my GPA, they aren't exactly jumping to get me.

I live in what would be considered the Lower East Side (very low) or downtown...very near MSOE and about 2 blocks from the Firstar building. I love it!

Ok this is creepy, you live really close to my old Digs. I was on the corner of Kilbourne & Cass... the building owned by shoreline realty, it's called the Lancaster.

Ummm, this thread is getting scary. Am I obsessed today or what?

Do you ever eat at teh Lakefront cafe or whatever? Good lunches.

That is too wierd I haven't eaten at the Lakefront Cafe yet...someone told me that they only make like one thing for lunch every day or something? i'd be afraid I'd go in there and I wouldn't want the liver and onions or whatever they were making that day, and I wouldn't be able to just get up and walk out. Yes, I do in fact worry too much.

So give me the dish on the neighbourhood...I've only been living there since Jan, and have only been employed (read: able to afford more than rent and ramen) for about a month, so I kind of feel like I just moved in.

Any good neighbourhood bars, cool places to go/see/eat/whatever, etc.?

Augh, our power just went out at work and deleted this huge post!

The shorter version:

*Jazz in the Park, Thursday nights most of summer. go early, it's crowded, but if you don't want to actually go to the Park you will probably still hear it from your apartment. The park is 2 blocks west of Cass, between Kilbourn and Wells.

*Food: EE Sane Thai, on Farwell across from Pizza Shuttle. Terrible service, excellent food, get takeout.
Comet Coffee(also on Farwell but farther north) has excellent funky sandwiches; vegan chili on weekends. Very smoky though; sit outside if you're a nonsmoker.
Landmark (downstairs) for drinks etc. - major UWM hangout so you might know that one already.
Von Trier for exotic beers, corner of Farwell & North Ave. Sometimes they do tastings, there may be a cover for those.
Blue Dawg bagles (across from Shank Hall & the clinic with all the protestors); we used to go there for breakfast a lot on the weekends.
Velvet room on Third (? I think) street, just a few blocks north of the mall. Very swanky, little old men play live jazz on the weekends sometimes. they are awesome.

I love Milwaukee... this is making me homesick!

One of my friends is playing in a swing band this summer at Jazz in the park! I walk past Cathedral Square on my way home every day.

I'll have to check out the Landmark, I've never heard of it. I didn't know there was a Thai place on Farwell, either...good to know!

I haven't really ventured out of the little Juneau-Water-Michigan-Lake square of involvement yet, since my car is out of commission. As much as I love my neighbourhood, there doesn't seem to be much within walking distance for food/bars (except Edwardo's! Fantastic pineapple pizza!) It seems like everything is up by UWM or on Old World 3rd. I've heard that ParkBar3, which is like 2 blocks away, is kind of a cool place though.

I have never been to ParkBar, but I have heard it is cool from others. I forgot about Edwardos... yum. On teh other side of Cathedral square is Elsa's on the Park; very, very trendy winebar/cafe type place. Go there if someone else is paying and they're generous.

Also the AleHouse in the Third Ward... Water Street south under the bridges to the highway. Also there are galleries & some cool furniture/thrift stores down there. Excellent brews and food.

Blue Dawg is within 6-8 blocks, go straight up farwell... EE Sane is a little farther up, probably about 1 - 1.5 miles.

Or take the bus, the bus system in Milwaukee is excellent; I didn't have a car for 4 years and I only missed it to go to Target, which is way out in the 'burbs. If you do the bus thing, buy books of tickets - they don't expire forever and you get them cheaper than if you pay cash. Plus they don't give change, so if you don't have exact you are SOL.

Man, I want to come visit & go to all these places myself!

Water street can get pricey... it's kind of where everyone goes, so they take advantage.

The east side is generally better (price-wise), because it caters to student starvation.

I'll second EE Sane! Best thai food in Milwaukee - way better than King and I and cheaper too.

I recently moved to Green Bay from Milwaukee. Dewgirl you checked out my apartment! Totally forgot all about that. HOw Funny! I totally miss Blue Dawg bagels, too. They were amazing.

As far bars, restaurants in your immediate vicinity. There aren't too many. I always went to Points East Pub (Just on the other side of Pick 'n Save...corner of Jackson and ??) It's a small little corner bar but they have quite a few beers on tap and the regulars are pretty funny. To-die-for chicken wings.

There's also Why not II about a block up from Points East. Wierd place. All the liquor is served out of little airplane bottles. Again, good people watching. Free popcorn. I went to a poetry reading there once by Jim Carroll (Basketball Diaries)

Restaurants - can't think of any off hand. There's the Milwaukee bread Co. in the strip mall by Pick 'n Save. Pretty good sandwhiches. Lakefront cafe is good. Walk downt to Brady Street. More choices over there.

Here I am...you two have had quite a chat going here. Thought I'd interject. I live in Riverwest. Been in Milwaukee 12 years now (holy crap). I moved up here from Racine for college & finished in '95. Now I've got 3 weirdly fun jobs.
I agree 100% about EE-Sane. I love their Vietnamese & Laotian dishes. Have you tried their noodle soups with little meatballs? Wo.
I also love:
-Phan's Garden (Vietnamese on National Ave.)
-Azteca on 5th
-Polonez in St. Francis (or Cudahy, I forget)
-Cafe Lulu

i think I need a snack. talk to you soon.

Ack...can't type today...I meant that Art lives in my Building...not his real name of course...I usaully only bump into him on the stairs...Geez, Dewgirl and I are practially neighbors! As far as places to go, you must go to Fuel Cafe in Riverwest, it's practically a Milwaukee landmark by now. But go during the day, at night it's full of rebellious high schoolers. In the daytime, it's full of neighborhood people. And they have really good food. I also go to Quarters "Rock and Roll Palace" alot, it's really a dive, but a very friendly dive. Many of my friends play music there on Sunday and Thursday nights. Then there's Onopa Brew Pub right down the street from Fuel. It's huge, but very low key (NOT a Water Street type bar), and they have very cheap beer in a cooler next to the bar. Sunday Nights, they play reagge-dub, which is fabulous music.

As for the MAM... this local loves to drive past and is embarassed that she hasn't been inside yet (oops!)

(Living in MKE for my 5th, going on 6th year. Currently living near North Ave, but moving out when my lease expires at the end of the month.)

Another favorite Milwaukee thing - gallery night. All the art galleries on the East side and third ward are open and free (and sometimes serve goodies!) It's wonderfully hip and trendy.

Also, three cheers for Bryant's out on 7th and Layton. It looks like a time warp to the 70s lounge era. it's a bit far from downtown where most of you all seem to live, but oh, so worth it. For those unfamiliar - just tell the waitresses what flavor of drink you'd like... strawberry, peach, mint, raspberry... whatever. They'll whip you up a lovely blended drink. Two signature drinks - the brain buster and the black magic - which looks inky black and is on fire when it arrives at your table. how cool is that?

Whoa! Where did all these posts come from!! Yes, OEW, that was me who checked out your apartment, and now I live about 3 blocks down the street, how odd!

I haven't gone to anything in Riverwest, although many of the places you all mentioned sound familiar and have been recommended to me before. I get scared going over there though - I stick to the East Side, downtown (although not Marquette) and Walker's Point.

Wow! I never knew there were so many people from Milwaukee here! Maybe we'll have to have our own DigsMeet

Edited to ask: Jessicazee, where do you bartend (I saw in your profile)? (if you don't mind my asking) (too many parentheses) When I first moved up here I bartended in Walker's Point at Zin's, which is now Shaker's.

I adore Gallery Night! And at the fall one (the last one I made it to before i moved up north, sigh) I visited the MAM. Fabulous. I was there for the Chiuly exhibit. Amazing.

Also, I can't even tell you how many times I've been to Bryants and gotten brainbusted. Although, I believe it's on 9th and Lapham. There's a similar place on the south side of town - that I'm totally drawing a blank on. It's even more kitschy.
And you can order a tiki love bowl.

Yeah!

I work at the Uptowner in Riverwest (one of 3 jobs I have). It's not that scary over here! I lived on the East Side for years before I made the move over here - cheaper rent, more diverse neighborhood, and better parking!

I have also worked at: the Stork Club (recently closed), Franklin Place and before that I was a cook at Pandl's, then Calderone Club, then Benjamin Briggs (closed, too...hm, I'm beginning to see a pattern here 0

Just started my gardening summer job this week. Yay tulips!

Where is Zin's? I don't think I've ever been there.

Riverwest isn't scary... I second that. The neighborhood is very tight-knit, which is surprising in a community with lots of rentals. The apartments and houses are cheap to rent and have lots of character, and people watch out for each other. Plus, Fuel has some of the greatest people-watching in the city.

Zin's/Shakers is at 422 S. 2nd Street - right next door to Reed Street Station if you're familiar with that.

I'm still not convinced that Riverwest isn't scary. All of my friends tell me that I shouldn't go over there alone during the daytime or even with friends at night because a lot of muggings and stuff happen there. I hate having to drive through there to get to the highway from UW-M...I almost ran myself out of gas once because I didn't want to stop at that place on Locust and MLK.

Well, I won't lie and say nothing bad ever happens in my neighborhood, but I also know that two friends of mine have been mugged/assaulted on the East Side/Downtown. (one in broad daylight in Maryland and Park).
And I do never walk alone at night, but that's just sort of a smart thing to do no matter where you are. And crime is just something you live with when you live in a big city. Being afraid just makes things worse. Did you grow up in a small town?

That gas station on MLK & Locust is sort of scary, but I go there once in a while and it's just a place to get gas and a candybar to me now.

You should have seen Brady Street 10 years ago. No woman in her right mind would walk down that street without an armed escort, and now it's all la-tee-dah and filled with hipsters and scenesters (not to say I haven't been down thataways to go to the Nomad or Apollo or Glorioso's).

Oh, wow. I guess I can see how it would be pretty scary then... after living on Marquette's campus for 2 years, the east side and Riverwest seemed like heaven. But that was as much because of the annoying, drunk, obnoxious Marquette students as the sh*t neighborhood.

Did you go to Marquette? You said you lived on campus.

I graduated from MU last spring. I didn't think neighborhood safety was that much of a problem when I started college, but junior and senior year things just seemed to get worse and worse in that neighborhood. Glad I don't have to deal with that kind of stuff any more. but anyway.
