Savasana -

You might want to check out Shaker's on 2nd and Florida(?). It's a nicer place, known for being a wine and cigar bar with some pretty decent cuisine and a very laid back atmosphere. It's a little pricey (a martini will run you about $8) but it's a good place for a classy, low-key night if that's what you're looking for.

Now my question is, when are all of us Milwaukee Digsters going to get together for a digsmeet?

Also, the college student hangouts are pretty cheap... the Landmark (Farwell just south of North Ave) is a blast (three bars, a bowling alley, an arcade) and has a pretty interesting mix of people, the BBC (corner of Farwell and North Ave) is ok... they both tend to have a lot of UWM/Marquette students. More UWM probably. Another bar in that area, with a little older crowd, is Von Trier (opposite corner of Farwell and North Ave). They have a ton of beer on tap but it is a little pricy because most of it is imported.

Where else... hmm. We used to go to the Nomad (Brady St.) in the summer & sit outside... it's super-tiny inside. Go early because it gets crowded. Hi-Hat has brunch on Sundays with some interesting food, also on Brady Street.

Oh, and I know you didn't really ask about restaurants, but African Hut on Third Street is really, really excellent and the owners/staff are fabulous. I hope it is still open.

re: Digsmeet Milwaukee, I live in Omaha, Nebraska but will definitely be up in brewtown sometime this summer... not sure of dates though. Will keep you posted.

Hey, I'm a Milwaukee Digster and I'd love to meet more people in the area. I've only posted in this local forum once though because you're all college girls living downtown and I'm an older, suburbs chick. Woefully suburban.

Ok, I'm feeling the Milwaukee Digster love, so I decided to come up with some suggestions for Savasana and some general recommendations. I don't like to spend a lot of money, so hopefully these are cheap ideas.

restaurants
Ghengis Khan Mongolian BBQ - Hwy100, Mongolian grill (go before 2pm to get the $6 lunch price)
The Knick - downtown, classy American (great spinach & feta burger for about $7)
Cafe Lulu - Bayview, casual fusion (kickass Asian slaw)
Botanas/La Fuente/La Perla - south of downtown, Mexican (all same ownership, I've heard)
Joey Buonas - downtown, Italian
Buca di Beppo - downtown, family-style Italian
Taqueria Azteca - south, Mexican

entertainment
Comedy Cafe on Brady - go with a group, everybody fills out the little pink card, and they'll call you and say that you won a free Thursday night party for like 20 of your friends. Drinks and happy hour food beforehand at Victor's, ride the bus to the club where there's a 2 drink minimum, and free pizza afterwards at Victors. Insist that everybody in your group fill out a card because they'll eventually give a free party to each person.
karaoke - http://members.aol.com/ejshazam/

bars
Y-not II - downtown, dive (decent jukebox for a dive bar)
Dragon Lounge - east, ?
The Vox - east, alternative (great jukebox)
Bryants - south, cocktail lounge
At Random - Bayview, all ice cream and mixed drinks, no beer
http://www.onmilwaukee.com/barsclubs/articles/uniquebars.html

I live in Oak Creek and work in Brookfield plus my best friend lives in the same general area as Savasana, so I'm pretty familiar with that part of town. Savasana, if you don't want to travel far, I would recommend Club Paragon down on Hwy 100. It's pretty decent with a north woods lodge/sports bar feel. And they just opened a BW-3 on Hwy 100. But there are tons of dive bars around you that can be a diamond in the rough. We occansionally go to Stacey's on 67th & Beloit. It's listed as a "cocktail lounge" in the phone book, but it really should be called "mullet hangout". You can get large homemade pizzas for $4 and drinks are super cheap, like maybe $1.50 per mixed drink. The jukebox contains music like AC/DC, Def Leopard, Metallica and Aerosmith.

Thanks for that AWESOME list, Jess. Funny enough, I live within WALKING distance of Club Paragon! It's not bad to hang out at, but with all those ideas you listed, we have an excuse to get out more!
PS - a Milwaukee digs meet would be fun!

*bump*

I'm coming to Milwaukee! May 22 my friend has tickets to see Cher, and so we're driving up that day to stay the weekend. It's been almost a year since I was there (Summerfest 2002) and 2 years almost to the day since I lived there. What's cool & new that I have to see? Does anyone want to have lunch or a drink one day?

Yes, yet another "last tour". Cher will never really have a last tour until she drops onstage.

Ok that was mean....

Anyway, if you want to go the concert is the night of the 22nd, which is a thursday.

Yup, I work 7:45 - 4:30 every day... too bad that will be just one week before I start having half-day Fridays. Though... I might be convinced to take a half day off if that's the only time that works

dang, I somehow totally missed this thread.

I live in the east village, just south of brady street. My house is from 1890 and has crooked walls, but we have off-street parking! I work at a cafe on Brady street right around the corner from my house. I also work at the Institute of Visual Arts, a contemporary art gallery on the UWM campus.

I volunteer at the Riverwest Food co-op and at the Wisconsin Humane Society.

I'm also heading up a group called the Milwaukee Venue Project, we're trying to open a co-operatively run, all-ages concert venue and art exhibition space.

I moved here 4 (almost 5) years ago from San Diego, CA, I am originally from the San Francisco bay area. Milwaukee has much nicer people than anywhere I lived previously. Hard to get a job with an art history degree, though.

Just dropping in to say hi to all...the digsmeet sounds fun on the 22nd, unfortuantely I will be way in the middle to final exmasw that week, and the trend of this semester is that Savasana hides out in her apartment and studies so the gods of physiology don't strike down her poor little grade. If you want to have one anytime after memorial day, let me know!! Love to meet you all Savasana

Sorry you're in exams that week, Savasana... that stinks.

BUT, I think we will be around 4th of July weekend also, because Wilco is playing on a Summerfest side stage on the third, I think.

Ok, it just occurred to me that it is probably more than a little wierd that I am so into meeting the Milwaukee digsters. But I so, so love and miss Milwaukee and so do not like living in Omaha at all. C'est la vie.

So are y'all still down with meeting up Memorial day weekend? We'll be in the car or at teh concert all day Thursday (22nd) but Friday and Saturday are free as far as I know.

Is there anybody in the Milwaukee area that's looking for a roommate? I want to move closer to Brookfield where I work and have somebody to share the expenses. Preferrably a female, but it's not super important.

I have no pets, non-smoker, no kids. I am currently on a month-to-month lease and just need to give 30-days notice before I can move.

Thanks,
Jess

Hi cats and kittens, please allow me my first post here. I am excited to see all the wi messages! Can anyone give me any rental advice in Madison? I've lived here for years, but I'm looking for my first very own maxi pad. All the one bdrms seem to be about $625...which is a lot...doncha think? Especially because they're not necessarily nice. Any suggestions on where or how I could find something a little less expensive? Studios are generally too small for me, unless it was like the biggest studio in town. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

hi kittenpox
I am in Madison too. Right now I live in a one bedroom on the SW side of Madison. My rent is $585 and it's a great apartment. Here's the deal. It's near a bad area of town. My car did get broken into, but it was only because of the type of car that it was. Since then I have gotten a truck and have had no problems. I am sure that they might have some sublets. The place is The New Fountains. Hope this helps!

Hey Kittenpox,
I'm on the far west side of Madison (Middleton, technically) and I'm paying a gross $700/mo for a 1 bedroom. We didn't have a lot of selection because we were trying to find a place that would allow cats and that's not easy on the west side - not that I'm bitter or anything.

Good luck with your apartment hunt!

Thanks, beach & travelgirl! I looked at a place over lunch that was really nice and in a cool area - the 800 block of E. Johnson. It's $625, but it is actually a nice, big apartment - unlike many I've seen. The only weird thing was the landlord didn't have an applications - he just said he'd decide & get back to me. wtf is that? The man doesn't even know my last name! So yeah, we'll see. I did talk to the current tenant. She said he's a good landlord, just eccentric. And she's been there 7 years, so that's a good sign. I guess now I just have to wait and see if he decides to approve me...
Thanks again for the advice. And if this doesn't work out, I just may look into the fountains. later skaters!

Hi Kittenpox!
I just moved form MAdison last year, and have found that, in general, rental prices run higher than Milwaukee for crappier places. If you are anywhere near downtown or campus, this is even worse. For cheaper, nicer places, I would recommend looking near Fitchburg and the beltline, or out near Old Sauk Road, where the Target store is. (Basically anywhere farther out on the west side.) I know a friend who just got a nice place out there for relatively few dollars a month. From what I know, if you get out towards Middleton, they think they're all classy out there, so rent will be higher (J/K Beach!)
However, if you do want to be in the downtown area and you found a nice place on Johnson for that price, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Good luck with the eccentric landlord!

Well, the weird landlord broke up with me. He just said someone had looked at it before & wanted it. I don't know, I get the feeling he just decided to go with someone else. I feel so used! I'm actually very clean-cut looking lately-no piercings or funky hair color-so who knows what his problem is. I met a couple from L.A. at an apt. showing who said the rental situation in Madison is very similar to the one there -so I say we all move to L.A!
On a different topic, does anyone know what happend to Juju and Moxie??? That was my favorite store & it's suddenly gone. Did it move somehwere?

lol It's true, Middleton is a very snobby area. I mean, with a classy name like 'Middleton' it was inevitable really.

I went to the exhibit in July (during the art fair). It was neat, but I thought the exhibit would have more dislay items.

I was suprised at the number of household items Brook Stevens modified and updated. He wasn't the original creator of many of the items, but did do a lot in the way of upgrades. I liked the camper, toaster and the building complex he wanted to put in Milwaukee.
