wierd, I graduated from Marquette too. This is a small world. I'm wondering who you Golden Eagles are and am also thinking maybe that's best left unsaid.

I guess I'm afraid I got super drunk and puked on you as I was leaving Hegarty's.

I'm teasing about puking on someone! But I'm sure there are other incidences I'm not proud of and don't remember.

Anyway, I graduated in May of 2000.

Going to see a specific band or are you just going?

Haven't really looked at the schedule yet myself.

I'm excited for Jazz in the Park. Swing Nouveau this Thursday, I think.

I have a feeling I'm not going to like festival season.

I've been to two so far... Dan Jansen Fest and RiverSplash. Now, I'm normally not a claustrophobic person or anything, but both times I got freaked out... too many people milling around, bumping into me, spilling things on me...eek. For some reason, it's different in a bar, but when it's outside I expect some personal space.

Nope, nope nope. Not for me.

We're going to see Blondie specifically... the show is July 5th on one of the smaller stages. Yay for aging punk goddesses! (and my gay friend who wants to be Deborah Harry, so is driving us to Mke).

I've never minded crowds, I just hope it isn't obnoxiously hot. Also I loved Bastille Days, because it was right outside my window...Dewgirl, you should just be a hop from it! Beware though: parking is a nightmare while it is going on, because they close half of Kilbourn.

I hear you about the claustrophobia Dewgirl... some days it's a little much to be that close to sloppy drunks. But I try to go every once in a while anyway - seeing a good band can make all the difference in whether its fun or not.

I would kind of like to see the Indigo Girls and a couple of other bands on the side stages, but there really wasn't that much that interested me this year overall. Blondie sounds like a good time too...

Hi!

I just wanted to say HI and interject that I just moved to Milwaukee from Columbia, MO. I'm having a great time so far, but I'm really looking forward to Summerfest when I have some friends from home coming up to visit.

That's all for now... I have to look for a job

you've never heard of the White Stripes? Dang, Dewgirl you're gonna have to go to the show. It's Jack & Meg White, playing lovely rocky punky drum-infested good songs. they wear red and white clothes only.

Sugar Man Three is a funky jam band in the vein of Morphine.

Jets to Brazil is pure boy power pop rock.

Also, there's a DMV just south of downtown on St. Paul. Look in the blue pages of the phone book. I need to go get my truck's emission tested there soon, too. Thanks for reminding me!

Any suggestions with what I can do with my car during summerfest? I've been told I live in prime parking territory, and I really don't want to leave home only to find I need to park 2 miles away. I live there dammit, I should get parking priority. My other option seems to be not to drive anywhere for however long this thing is going on. Any suggestions for secret spots to park, permits I can get to give me precidence, etc?

Park your car and move it just often enough to not get towed for "abandonement", and take the bus. Milwaukee has one of the greatest bus systems in the nation, I used to take it everywhere. They have a little hotline you can call if you are confused about what line to take too.

I love the bus. Or leave your car parked and have friends pick you up.

How often do you have to move it before you get an abandonment ticket? I've been able to go 2 or 3 days without needing my car before, but that's about it.

The whole bus thing: I'm not really up for that. First off, it's waaaay too expensive...and two, there are a lot of, um, undesireable people on those buses that I don't want to have to deal with.

Several days in the winter, probably more in teh summer since they won't be able to tell you haven't moved the car in 3 days by the height of the snowdrifts. Hee hee.

If you don't want to take the bus, I would just try and bum rides as much as possible. Or see if Shoreline will sell you a spot for a month in a lot; I know there are some that they own within a few blocks of where you live. That way you won't have to worry too much about finding a spot. Good luck!

Hey everyone,
I grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, have been in Madison the last four years doing college, and will be moving to Wauwatosa in August to start at the Medical College.
I love hearing all this about downtown Milwaukee, I never knew about a lot of it, being relatively isolated in the suburbs. I am so excited! Anyone know of good places to rent or interesting places in Wauwatosa area? We also have friends living on Lake Dr., so will be in that area a bit, too.

It's $1.50! Cheaper than a gallon of gas these days. And I'm sorry, but what undesirable people do you mean? I can understand if you're just scared, but truly, Dewgirl, people that ride the bus are just like you and me - maybe they look different, eat different food, earn more or less money than us, or are just ecologically more aware. I used to take the bus downtown to work every day when I worked in the Third Ward. I know this rant isn't going to make you want to ride the city bus, but I already know how you feel about my neighborhood (Riverwest), and I just don't think you're being fair. I mean, I know you grew up in like Hobart or whatever, but you live in big ol' Milwaukee now. You shouldn't be afraid to discover and embrace the beautiful diversity this town has to offer.
I'm not trying to make you feel bad. I just (sorry if I'm wrong) hear sort of anti-urban overtones in how you talk about some things. I hope this isn't true.

As far as the Summerfest parking issue, living downtown during it can be hellish. Even when I lived almost on Brady St., parking was a nightmare. You'll be able to find more spots early in the mornings before it starts, but where you live, parking is usually pretty hard to find anyway, isn't it?

Editied because I can't figure out how to do the "reply with quote" thing right.

Plus you can read on the bus...which I always liked. But I hate driving. And I may have been one of those "undesirables", because I took the bus EVERYWHERE, which I'm not sure I like. But whatever, I don't want to start a Digs flamewar.

Yes, parking in the Kilbourne/Wells area near the lake is miserable ALL the TIME, and only gets worse during summerfest. Which sucks, because it is a great neighborhood.

Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to the downtown DMV. It is ridiculously busy and they are not nice.. and if you thought there were 'undesirables' on the bus, wait until you check this place out. I got hit up for money twice just walking from my car to the office. And there is always a line ... and if you are in it when 4:00 comes (closing time) they shut the door on you and tell you to come back tomorrow.

Oh yeah, and when they made my 1st license (90 minute wait), it said that I was 18 (I'm almost 23). Needless to say, I was there for another 20 minutes while they fixed it.

There is a pretty good one out in Greenfield. That's where I went the second time (getting my plates changed).

I have a question about the whole abandonment thing: I just went out of town for the weekend, and we took my SO's car. Could I have gotten a ticket for leaving my car where it was for 3 days??

Possibly, but it's unlikely during the summer unless you're parked by a meter or in a no-parking zone. The crazy parking nazis in my old neighborhood gave me a ticket because my car didn't move for three days (obviously, because there was a foot of unscraped snow on the windshield) one winter week. Part of it was also that parking in that neighborhood is INSANE and people have actually gotten into fistfights about parking spots, so one of the neighbors may have called & told on me.

I guess I've just had a lot of bad experiences in this city so far. I never really wanted to live in a big city, but it's where I've ended up, so I deal with it as best I can.

As far as the bus prices go - yeah, it's $1.50... but if you need to get on another bus, that's another $1.50... then you need to make sure you're there on time to catch it... and then get back.. so that can be $6.00 easy when I can just hop in my car and drive in a lesser amount of time, leave whenever I want, not have to deal with people harassing me, etc. Just personal preferences I guess. Maybe when I get a UPass through UWM I'll use it more often.

Oops, you're totally right about the downtown DMV. I'm used to panhandlers but its the wait time there that kills me. and so many people have babies who are annoyed to be there, too. I need to go to the downtown Emissions place - yep, that's what I meant. The best DMV in down off of Grange somewhere (about 15 minutes from downtown). It's basically brand-new and has a more pleasant waiting area.
The one on Teutonia is okay 50% of the time. It's also in a not-exactly dangerous but not-exactly Utopian neighborhood.

Dewgirl, sorry you've had bad experiences. So have I; I'm just chalking them up as experience. Just think of what I'll say about the assholes of the world in my first tell-all biography!

And I'm no innocent - I use my beloved pickup truck more than I should. In the summer though I generally ride my bike at least to pick up beer or go to friends' houses. Now instead of taking the bus by necessity (because parking in the Third Ward is expensive as HELL - 25 cents for 15 minutes), I take the bus for a fun, worry-free ride to favorite bars and feel good that I'm not getting behind the wheel after a few shots of Jameson. I tend to use cabs a lot, too. Yellow is the best, if you ever need one. 271-1800, and they show up in minutes.

There's also a stop in front of the East Library on North Ave. and during Summerfest there's a whole part of the entrance street devoted to cabs ready to take you to your nect destination. This has been an informercial for Yellow cab, sorry. but its good info if you ever need it.

That's the one in Greenfield. The waiting area is pretty impressive for a DMV. Everything is electronic, so you have a computerized voice that says "Number 337, please go to Window #9." Add that to the scrolling marquee with news and trivia, and you're set for a day of cheap entertainment
