Aw, yeah. Greg's is good stuff. Apparently the store looks exactly the same as it did back in the eighties (not that I've lived in Toronto that long, but a friend was telling me that her father took her there when she was six, and it looked exactly the same as it does now.)

I know I am not Canadian, but I went to a wedding this weekend where at least half of the guests were. One of the groom's close friends is Haydain Neale, he is with a group called Jacksoul. He sang at the reception and was wonderful, not to mention completely hot and totally nice. His wife was wonderful as well. My question is, have any of you heard of him or have any of Jacksoul's records? I would like a yeah or neah on the music before I search for a CD.

Thanks.

Jacksoul is quite a good group. Last summer they had a really catchy song that was always on the radio - alas, my new car has a 6 cd player so I rarely listen to the radio while I drive now.
Why not check Kaazaa or something like that - they might have something by them there.

Funny, you've given me an idea, shirk - my salary is split between my company's US and CDN operations as I work for both. Perhaps I should demand that the US half of my salary (approx $19 thousand CDN) be paid in USD. I wouldn't ask for another raise for a good 5 years!

Chele--are you checking out the World Youth Day festivities? I remember you wanted to. My parents live near the main site, and my father told me that he gets asked for ID to prove he lives in the area every evening when he comes home from work!

I'm Canadian too!
Born and raised in Toronto and still living in the city. Sadly, I've yet to venture to see the rest of Canada (just been in Ontario and Quebec), something I want to do since I've probably seen/been in more cities in the States.

I've been a lurker here for awhile, but thought it was time to show myself. I am not Canadian, but am thinking of applying to grad. school in Halifax. I've been there on vacations - I'm from Boston and my family always went north during the summer, frequently ending up in Canada - but I don't know anything about what it's like for a twenty-something living there or what the weather is like during the winter. Any info. is appreciated!

So are you thinking of Dalhousie then, changescoming? I've only been to Halifax once, and that was during the summer--as I understand it, it's very much a college town, so there really isn't all that much to do there when the students aren't around. On the plus side, though, the cost of living is really low on the east coast--probably more so outside of the city, but Halifax living will certainly be cheaper than Boston.

Also, hello lichee! I used to live in Toronto--went to high school there--and I'm usually up every third weekend to visit because so much of my friends-and-family are still there.

Lichee, I'm in Waterloo now--about an hour and a half west of Toronto, so close enough for frequent visits. I used to go to W.L. Mackenzie C.I. (so many years ago!)

Amaryllis,
My cousin went to Mackenzie.
What are you doing in Waterloo now, working or studying? My boyfriend went to Laurier and I think we'll be doing Octoberfest this year.

Working and studying--I'm at the University of Waterloo, though I'm working in Waterloo this summer. We should probably take the conversation off the boards, but I'm intrigued by the fact that your cousin went to Mac too--when did he/she graduate?

I'm so outta the loop since my computer died suddenly two months ago. Glad to see the Canadian thread in still staying up at the top of the board. I don't know when that World Youth Day question was asked...but no, I didn't really head down there the day of the giant mass. It was pretty rainy and then hot, so I watched the majority of it on TV. I'm defintely heading down to our end of summer event in Toronto.....gotta love the EX! Anyone headed down there already? Anything that's a must see this year?

So nice to be back on the boards!
Michele

Anyone wanna wager on when we'll get hit with unbearable cold?!? I'm hoping....November. It's been so nice lately! El Nino wrecks havoc on the rest of the world, and we get nice weather...for us anyway...go figure!

Not a happy subject, but I hate to see the Canadian thread move down too far.

Good luck finding a place! For a strange reason, everybody switchs appartements in July in Montreal. There are very few places for rent available during the other months.

If you have unlimited funds, the Plateau is the nicest place to live. Think european style neighboorhood with little bakeries and cafés... It's very expensive though (Think at least 1000$CAN for a crappy two-bedroom appartment).

A little further north is the Italian neighboorhood, the newest hip place to live where I'll hopefully be able to find a place myself. It's close to both french universities so there are a lot of students and the rent is still relatively decent. (I'd say 600-700$ for the same crappy two-bedroom) And there's a FABULOUS market.

I don't know the western part of Montreal as well, but I know there are nice places near the Côte Ste-Catherine metro station and in Outremont (more expensive). Keep in mind that the east of the city is mostly French and the west is mostly English, but should be able to communicate in English almost everywhere.

I hope you'll love Montréal, it's really a great city!

Um, like sorry but I have tried not to reply to this post (I just saw it today and it is two months old) but I can't stand it any more.

We have lots of "university towns" in the Maritimes but Halifax is not one of them. There are over 300,000 people in the HRM - Halifax Regional Municipality. Dalhousie University is one of five universities in the city. It is a great city with lots to do year round.

I know, I know, I am sounding defensive. But really, I gotta get it out!

Didn't mean to offend--I've only been to Halifax once, and at that point I was living in Toronto, so it didn't compare favorably. Now that I'm living in a much smaller town, I'd probably have a totally different impression of it.

I guess next year every relative I have will be demanding we join them, but until the baby arrives, Sean and I are just two schmucks.

Of course you can add your two cents. Always nice to see another "I am Canadian?" post from time to time. Here in Toronto it's really really cold. The sun today made it look all warm and cheerful, but when that wind picks up...Brrrrrrrr.....makes me long for July!

I'm also in Toronto - so many people forget how to drive as soon as the snow falls! they forget that snow + ice = slippery! they either drive too slow, or race too fast!

200 accidents in one day? in one city? geez.....makes me want to stay off the roads!!

I am originally from a small northern ontario town, went to school in Ottawa and lived there for five years and am in the process of moving to Vancouver. From what I have heard Vancouver is much like Toronto. To all of you living in Vancouver at the moment was I well informed or do I have the wrong impression?

Heh, well we're a large Canadian city, other than that I'm not too sure. I haven't spent a lot of time in TO, my impression is that Vancouver has fewer cultural attractions (theatres etc.), more natural/sports things (beaches, skiing, lots of parks everywhere), a more laid-back attitude in general (drive slower, fewer people in suits).

Anyway, regardless of how it compares to Toronto, Vancouver's a very nice place to live. Email me (brookea at shaw dot ca) if you want any, I don't know, Vancouver tips.

Hey!! Glad to see some fellow Canucks on this thread!! I'm pretty new to the dig's board but I'm originally Indian, born in India but I never lived there. I lived in Bahrain(next to Saudi Arabia)until I was 4, and then we moved to TO, in Scarborough. So I pretty much grew up here..I love TO, love the multicultuarlism, especially since I'm in university now (UofT yeahh!!)and it's more obvious. But glad that there are soo many of us Canucks on the board!!

Thanks for the advice Yam. Now I am looking forward to the move. Not that I don't enjoy being in Toronto but I am more of an outdoor type person and the way you describe the city appeals to me.
I may take you up on your offer of Vancouver tips when I get there
