So, apparently I have to set aside 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for this workshop. This seems problematic to me, since I know someone (Specs?) was not available in the evening...is 4:30 too late for coffee? If it is, can we...meet for breakfast? Or on Friday evening? Sorry guys...I might be able to leave the workshop a bit early, if, say, 3:30 is the only thing that would work. On a slightly separate note, my improv troupe is going to be performing on Saturday night if anyone's interested. IP: Logged |

Yay! I hope 4:30 works for everyone else, too! Mirage and Mocambo are reasonably close to me (although it always takes me a minute to figure out what that darn Mirage sign says...), though I've never been to either. I don't know where Bean around the World is - other than the one near my sister's house in Vancouver, and I'm assuming you're not talking about that one! I'm fine with any place. IP: Logged |

ohmigosh, I think we have a plan! Victoria digsmeet: April 9th, 4:30 p.m., Mirage cafe - yes? IP: Logged |

Yep, that's the place. Sounds like a plan, ladies! IP: Logged |

Hi Toronto people (well, hi everyone, really, but Torontorians in particular...). I just got accepted to York U to do my postgrad degree in Geography and I'm completely, completely stoked (apart from it being my dream to be in academia, I get to live overseas, on my own, for once). Here's the thing. I have friends all over the world. But I don't know a soul in Toronto! The closest people I know to the area are in London and Ann Arbor. Also, I don't really want to live on campus... so, any advice on good, cheap places to live? I'll be there in August, which I hear is a great time to be there (but being from sunny Singapore I know I'm going to be freezing my tropical little ass off once I'm there). IP: Logged |

Hello & welcome to Canada. I live about an hour & a half from Toronto, so I can't help with the apartment search, though I know rent has gone down recently. It's a great city with a lot of diversity, hope you enjoy it! IP: Logged |

motionparallax Housemate |
Ooh, Singapore! My dad's family is from and all over Singapore and Johor Bahru. /tangent You'll love it here in August. Toronto summer is lovely, not too hot, but I doubt you'll find it cold. The wintertime, another story most likely. From what I know I would not recommend living in the neighbourhood right around York - I have heard it can be a bit sketchy. I'm not very familiar with the area as it's quite a bit further north than where I am (I live in the downtown core near U of T, the other university). I'm sure there are other areas of North Toronto that are reasonably close proximity to York though - I have friends that go/went to York. I could ask around for you what areas are close and good to live in. IP: Logged |
|
delightt Housemate |
Motionp, that would be really great! Dodgy neighbourhoods or not, I'll need someplace relatively low-priced. I'm gonna be on an international student budget, which really isn't a lot to live on. A tiny little place would be good, either that or someone who needs a roommate... although I'm not quite familiar with living with strangers.I'm so excited about it these next 5 months are going to be the absolute longest in my entire life. Are you part Chinese/Asian in some way? I'm going to miss Southeast Asia so much, but I hear there are a lot of Asians in Toronto anyway. IP: Logged |

delightt, you won't feel left out or different - there are lots of Asians in Toronto, it's a very multicultural city. IP: Logged |

delightt, when i first visited toronto i'd been in canada only a month or two, and it was so vibrant, it made me crazy jealous! and since i was a bit homesick for india, we went to little india there and man, the films, the music, the food, the colours... i really wished [to the point of depressing myself over a whole weekend] i was going to school in toronto instead of ottawa. a first-year classmate from china felt the same when she visited toronto... so if you're looking for an asia fix, it's the right city. VERY cosmopolitan. IP: Logged |

natalie, I just found out that I have an interview for articling with the AG, and I would *love* to meet with you and pick your brain and stuff if that would be cool with you - but I don't want to take over the digsmeet with my questions! Could we meet for coffee or lunch or something? You can email me at the address in my profile! Thanks! IP: Logged |

Okay - I've emailed one of my York friends about this. When she gets back to me I'll share her wisdom. Low prices are not much to be had in Toronto, I find the price of living rather high, but I imagine Singapore is just as bad or worse. Also, if you're browsing listings and considering places that are too far to walk or bike, it's good to keep in mind that a transit pass costs about $90 a month, which should be lumped in with your rent in consideration of accommodation. As for Toronto, there is a huge Asian population - you shouldn't feel out of place at all. It's very multicultural here and has great food accordingly. Yes, I'm half-Chinese (father Chinese,). I grew up in a very very white town though, and was socialized accordingly, so the race/culture thing is an odd thing for me... I also look fairly white, and I don't speak Chinese... I don't feel very connected to my Chinese side at all which I dislike. IP: Logged |

Congratulations, delightt! The mix of ethnicities in Toronto is definitely one of its greatest assets. Along with the food. It's a great food town, if you like eating. I found a few resources for you. Here's the off-campus housing website for York U: You can also look for apartments in the Toronto Star, the city's most widely-read paper (with the help of a map, so you can see how far everything is from the university: Since York is in the north end of the ciy, you basically have two choices, as motion pointed out: live in the north end, where it's easier to get to school, or live in the city proper and commute. The transportation system here isn't too bad, but the commute to York from downtown is a little long (50 minutes to an hour, I think) and bus service directly to the university isn't that frequent. Although, as a grad student, you may not have to go on to campus every day (depending on your program) so that's something to take into account as well. York also offers on-campus housing for grad/mature students, but you'd be trading in the convenience of living close to school for the convenience of living in a real neighborhood with shopping, restaurants, etc. Just FYI, lots and lots of people in Toronto live with roommates, and that may be your best bet if you want to live inexpensively. Just to give you an idea of costs, an average bachelor apt. will run from $600 to $800 CAD, but you can often share a room for $450 to $600 CAD. Good luck, and let us know if you have any more questions! IP: Logged |

Speaking of things in Toronto... I was at this new gym on Friday getting the schpeel from the guy. He said "Oh - you live in Canada!" (I work in the Detroit area - really it's not a stretch that I'd live in Windsor...) He says "We have 18 gyms in Canada!" I said great - thinking it's a big country - one would hope. He said "Maybe one is near you. Let's see - they're all in Tor-on-to" (saying it like he's never seen the word before)"Is that near you?" Now - I can understand - if we didn't live in Detroit - maybe knowing where Toronto was exactly - might be a problem. But to live within a hour of Windsor - and know that you have never seen a Toronto newscast, heard their traffic announced on our radio stations? - come on!! So I said "Yeah - um - Toronto? Is four hours away from me. I don't think I'll be going there to work out..." He says "I've only been to Canada once." (like it's some exotic tourist destination) Seriously - people go over to Windsor for dinner, to gamble, to watch the fireworks, to shop - people around here think of it kind of like another American city with this annoying border in the middle. idiot. meggo, this is unfortunately where that "dumb american" stereotype comes from - I hear stuff like that all. the. time. when I'm traveling in the US or abroad. Like "oh, it's so cold up there!" (uhh..not in Vancouver) or "you're from Canada? My brother-in-law's uncle was born in Toronto." uh-huh, I'm sure I know him. my personal favorite: "do people live in igloos in Canada?" wha??? umm, yes, the price of ice blocks are skyrocketing right now due to the housing boom. it's very sad that there are a handful of dumb people misrepresenting an entire country. I'm sure there are dumb canadian tourists out there too, though. IP: Logged |

I guess I just hoped that being so stinkin' close to the Canadian border - I wouldn't have found someone that dumb. I would have expected it further away from the border. I do love This Hour Has 22 Minutes though - when they interview the classic dumb Americans about Canada. IP: Logged |

If it helps, Stupid Americans are just as stupid about their own country. Once I told someone I was from Delaware and they said "Oh, is that in Georgia?" Um, no. Not to mention the several others who had no idea A) where Delaware was ( and these were not people from Alaska, or Hawaii, or even the West Coast. Nope, I'd say no further west than Ohio!) or B) that it was a state ("Oh, right, Delaware... what state is that in?" or "Oh, that's in New Jersey/Pennsylvania/Maryland, right?") hey you guys, thanks for the help!! Am slowly scrolling through the info now. I can't wait to get my ass out of here. The more I think about it the more I hate my job. Anticipating this is killing me. The sloooooooowest and loooooooongest 5 months of my life. Please do keep me updated of anything else you think would be useful to me... especially if someone's seeking a room/housemate. I'd like to live in the city, but I gotta see how things go. Um. I like to think I'm a pretty reasonable person to live with. I won't have much stuff while I'm there. I can be reasonably quiet since I don't have a sound system (can't transport it over). I sleep at really odd hours, but I can do it in a non-obstrusive manner. I can cook. I abhor having expired food in the fridge. I can clean. And I shower everyday. So... if anyone's got a spare room, do consider renting out to a rather hopeful little Chinese girl. IP: Logged |

CONGRATS natalie! I'm so happy for you and mr. natalie! it was great to meet you guys too! I'll be back around the 23rd/24th-ish to help my boy move back to Vancouver for the summer...but I don't know when I'll be back again after that. Since our meet was so short, I'd love to meet for breakfast/lunch/dinner/coffee again if anyone is up for it. IP: Logged |
