Three nights, it was thursday. It was great, all the old church ladies in my choir at rehearsal that night were tipsy from celebrating earlier. Heehee.

Wow. This writer truly captures what Canada (and the rest of the world) is all about.

"Now I see [the world] for what it is: America and a bunch of other places with subtle differences from us."

Wow.

I esepcially enjoyed the part about how Canadians wouldn't understand what rappers were referring to when the said the "dead presidents," as our money is pretty colors and has pictures of PM's and Queens on it instead of Presidents.

Actually, that is one of those untrue generalizations that doesn't apply to a lot of people who grew up near border cities or watch a lot of American tv. But I am always curious how much Americans near Canadian cities know about their neighbours.

Having American relatives sort of gives you a lot of little insights that you don't realize are "Americanisms" - - you just think you have strange relatives! (joke)

Dang it, the travelogue is gone. Another link anyone?

Canadian born and bred here, still livin' it and lovin' it. Won't narrow it down much further than Nova Scotia to all you strangers.

Oops, just noticed the restriction on images. Go to I Am Canadian to see what I wanted to put here.

Send me some good Canadian vibes, please - I had a job interview with Nortel yesterday. I think I'm in with a chance because I didn't laugh (as other colonials are wont to do, as I'm sure you know) when the Boss Lady said "let me tell you aboot what we do here".

*hands Sophie a Tim Hortons coffee and Canadian Maple donut* I hope you get the job. A close buddy of mine works for Nortel. He is my mentor on all things corporate world. And corporate ladder climbing technique. If I do half as well as he has I will be laughing all the way to the bank.

*thanks Shirk and hands him an Aussie Tim Tam and a glass of Milo in return*

I'm hopeful - apparently despite all the carnage, their fundamentals are actually pretty good (although I gather Goldman Sachs does have Nortel at one level above junk bonds at the moment), and I'm told they're in much better shape than Lucent.

And the super-cool thing is that the pay is the same as what I'm on now, but the job is part-time - mentally of course I am already planning lazy afternoons of shopping trips and laps of the pool.

I should know on Monday...

So, I don't know if anyone here follows the CIS Baskeball Championships (like the NCAA only Canadian and SMALLER)... but if anyone wants to know, my home town team, St.F.X. (Canadian Champions for the last two years) just lost their first game tonight. That means there's no way they'll win on Sunday, and they'll be playing for FITH PLACE tomorrow!

*sob*

Seriously, I am crying here.

Boo to Laval. Bastards.

Going out to drown my sorrow in lots and lots of booze, and maybe offer a shoulder to cry on to a ball player or two...

This was getting a little too far down the thread list, so I felt the need to bump it up to the top.

I know this is corny but....how's the weather for all you other Canadians?
Here is Toronto, I'm not exactly sure how to decribe the mixture of snow, wet snow, rain and hail like snow that's been happening. *sigh* Spring weather is out there somewhere...it just HAS to be!

its a little colder today than yesterday, but its still just sweater-weather.

What's Canadian for "hello"? Just kidding!! Hate to bug you guys, but my girlfriend has a conference this weekend in Banff. As far as I know, it's a ski resort type of place. I'm not sure if she'll have a car or not, but do you have any tips on what to see or do while she's there? Many thanks from your American sista!

Banff is a big ol' tourist town, so there's like, a goofy museum and 8 million shops selling souvenirs, but nothing super exciting. It's a gorgeous area, though. If she can swing a nature walk or a hike somewhere nearby (a ride up the chairlift?), it'll probably be very worthwhile. Lake Louise is pretty if it's on her way. There's also a hot springs pool in town I think - not that exciting, but that's always something nice to do when it's cold out, which Banff probably still is at this time of year.

Banff is pretty expensive, but beautiful. If she likes sushi, there are lots of good sushi places. She might also want to pick up some good ol canadian maple syrup! Apparently the beef is pretty good in Banff, since it's in ALberta, but I'm veggie and can't comment on this personally

Alberta does have excellent beef.

But no sushi! Ack! I refuse to buy sushi in a MOUNTAIN resort. Maybe I'm spoiled living in a port town, but no, no, no. There's just a limit to how fresh it can possibly be after a 14 hour road trip from the nearest ocean. I was always frightened by the sushi joints in Calgary. "Isn't Albera.. landlocked? Because.. fish.. you know..."

Any maple syrup you buy in Banff will be stupidly expensive and no better than the grade C stuff in the safeway. (Which can be decent, not dissing safeway. Any real syrup at all is better than aunt jemima.) You want good maple syrup, get someone in québec to ship you some in cans. Mmmm.

A friend of mine translated the term "you're all about the Benjamins" (American $100 bills have Benjamin Franklin(?) on the front) into "you're all about the SRBs" (for Sir Robert Borden, who's on the Canadian $100 bill) for me, because I didn't get the reference.

Just felt like giving us Canadians a bump.

How's this for a discussion question? What is a must see spot for anyone coming to visit your hometown (or whereever you're living now)?

I'm in Toronto, and I'd have to say....even though it seems like the obvious choice. The CN Tower. I went for dinner there for the first time this year and it's incredible to get to see the whole city and surrounding islands while it's still light out and then to watch the sun set. Really amazing.
Can any other Torontonians think of other "must see" places? I'm open for suggestions for myself, I love exploring my own city.

Toronto-touristing: how awesome! I used to work at Mt. Sinai Hospital, and on my lunch break I'd always go up to the U of T campus and just wander. And then I'd go up to Greg's at Bloor and Avenue for roasted marshmallow ice cream.

I like the Center Island ferries--not the islands, necessarily, just the ride to get to them. I haven't been to the Scarborough Bluffs in years, but they're lovely to explore, too, as is the beach at Woodbine. And the new subway stations fascinate me! They aren't open yet, but I love nosing around them and peering through the windows--very sleek. I approve.

And you're right, the CN tower is a lot of fun--I've only ever been up once, and that was last summer, but we had so much fun pointing out places we knew. It was like looking at a scale model of downtown.

(Sorry this is so long--I just love the city!)

I (vancouver) usually take out of towners to Granville Island, Stanley Park, and the Casa Gelato.

So is anyone else feeling all mushy what with the Queen's golden jubilee and all? She's coming to Canada in October. I hope she comes to vancouver during her stop in BC.

She's only 5'2", I just found out. Ahh, one day I too could rule an empire in platforms. Not that the queen needs platforms.

Is anyone checking out all the World Youth Day celebrations in July?! I've heard it's quite expensive to attend all the events, so I might just check out the mega mass at Downsview Park. I honestly can't remember the last time I went to mass, but I'm interested in seeing what the atmosphere of 1 million tourists will be like. I'm only a 5-10 minute walk from the park so at least I won't have to deal with transit and traffic nightmares. I don't really know what the week before the mass involves....anyone?!!?

Don't know too much about World Youth Day but there is a website at http://www.wyd2002.org/index.php

We have 17 kids going from Summerside, Prince Edward Island and are hosting 90 pilgrims from other countries. I hear that there are young people staying at practically every church in Southern Ontario before and after the event. That's alot of people to move afterall!

I'm absurdly thrilled by this--probably just the excitement of someone who knows my old neighborhood. (Not that the neighborhood is all that exciting--all I can squeal is "Oh, you know the old army base?" and that isn't nearly as fun as pointing out my favorite coffeeshops and antique bookstores.)
