Whoops! Gah I suck! 2pm was a typo. We have the chamber at 3pm, but we can say 2pm to all meet up if that works for everyone.

2pm sounds good to me, but I don't have any hats other than baseball hats, can I still come? I will bring boy's digital camera. And CJ, do you still have my email, or should I send it again?

I'll leave 2 pm in my calendar so I don't get there late (in typical meggo fashion).

Wooo hoo! What to wear what to wear....
I think we should definitely go for a drink afterwards - a celebratory beverage. Maybe dinner if we want (anyone know somewhere good close & relatively cheap?)

Well, -3 is cold after enjoying the nice weather we had for the past few days. It was good timing too since it coincided with New Years and walking home slightly inebriated that night was bearable.

I do realize i live in Canada and winter will always be there - i've accepted that. I don't mind the cold weather (perfect opportunity to wear my pink, comfy booties), it's the ice that makes unbearable. Near-slip disasters walking from the subway to home is not fun. Will have fun walking home tonight I'm sure - it's a blizzard outside right now...

btw, Isabel, I live in North York and work downtown, at King and University in the financial district. And i love Montreal in the summertime too, just beautiful.

and hear that about the longjohns! will be wearing them soon.

My dad gave us these things for xmas - they're like BIG rubber bands that go over your shoes and have small plastic spike-y things on the bottom - so you have traction. Maybe that would help? They just fit on over your shoes - similar to those old rubber goloshes my dad has (which you've never seen...) but they're just bands - so they can go over any shoe or boot. (although I think they wouldn't help with high heels.)

I haven't tried them yet (I think they might be older than I am - and therefore I'm terrified the rubber has broken down & will give me a broken nose the first time I try to put them on) - but I would imagine you could find a newer version of them somewhere...

Here they are, and they make another kind (same link) for high heels.
Also, can I just say I'm a total sucker for the HC catalog? I have a paper copy and I must have 20 things bookmarked to buy.

I am here to regretfully inform you that it is extremely unlikely there will be a wedding. There is only the tiniest sliver of a chance that this can happen on the 21st. I'm not ready to give up, but I am ready to accept that it probably won't happen. I encourage you to work on acceptance as well.

I hope that you'll still want to come meet up and maybe we can come up with something fun to do instead (while keeping the tiny sliver of chance open, just in case.) But I wanted to let you know in case that changes your plans.

Oh wait - you're still comin' though? Just no wedding? (or thin chance of one...) But you and Mander will be in Toronto? Cuz I'll probably still come then.
Why the slim to none chance of wedding? Paperwork hell?

We'll definitely BE there, getting married is a whole other thing. And yeah, it's paperwork and the vast complexities of courier services. Bah. Just not enough lead time I'm afraid. But, I'm still working the sliver, it will just be a nail biter all the way to the end if it happens at all.

I'm trying to concentrate on the real reason we're going: to look around and get a feel for the place and the housing etc so we can go on to make a decision about whether we think we'd want to move or not. Getting married started out as a lark and shall not deter me from having a good time if it can't work out. It shall not!

Update: it definitely won't happen. My very last hope is not going to pan out so I think we might as well just cut our losses now. Bummer.

OK! Moving ON! DigsMEET TORONTO!!

It's so convoluted. I'm still awaiting letter from lawyer... should come tomorrow or latest wednesday. THEN all the paperwork must be 2-dayed to the Office of the Registrar General, so they get it what, thursday or friday. Then they have to process and approve and mail to me. By that time we'll be there, so my last hope was getting a shipping label printed so that they could overnight it to the hotel. But I can't seem to do that from here given that I'd have to mail it from US and it has Canadian postage, etc.

I must say, I'm actually kind of relieved to know now instead of eeking my way through to a nonconclusion at the end anyway. It sucks but we just didn't have enough lead time to get it done.

Well - wait a sec... if you need something to cross the border easily - let me know. I couldn't quite follow the mailing logic - but if you need something shipped to Canada - I LIVE in Canada. If you need something shipped to the US - there is always me - who works in the US too....

Like I said - I'm not sure what the original plan was & which cog I could be in it - but if I could be - lemme know!

... I neglect this thread like crazy, and I am really shy (and younger), but could I join up for the Toronto digsmeet too? I wish I hadn't missed out on the earlier one. Even with the wedding off, this looks like it's going to be so much fun.

We'd love to meet you MP!

And meggo the sticky thing is purchasing an overnight airbill here to send to the ORG, so that they could overnight the authorization to the hotel (in the event they actually get my paperwork and process it in time that an overnight will still catch us.) Pha.

IF the letter comes today AND a mailboxes, etc type place can create the airbill for me, we'll send it up and see what happens. So, I propose we still plan to meet at the City Hall, just in case. But I need to have my mind in a place where I accept that it's not going to happen. I just can't take the ups and downs anymore with so much to deal with otherwise right now.

CJ - fair enough - I can completely understand the need to have something settled - one way or the other.
I'm excited for the digsmeet. I told Hubby last night that the wedding portion might be off and he actually seemed disappointed (even though he's going to Miami that weekend anyway). I said "Oh - I'm still goin'" and he said "Oh fun - you'll get to hang out!"

(of course I think he was trying to suck up for falling asleep on the couch again...)

Anyway - I'm looking forward to it and think that meeting at city hall might be best (Toronto is a big city - I get lost easily).

Well we sent everything off, despite the uncertainty. Who knows, maybe we'll check into the hotel and they'll inform me that I have a package waiting. There is one more hellish call to the ORG in my future but other than that that's all I can do. It's in the hands of the Universe now.

We realized last night that we're out of town this weekend, busy Sunday, then I work Monday and we're OFF tuesday. All of our panic for all of that is around what do we WEAR?? hahaha, such girls.

I've been gone so long I've missed all kinds of developments! Maybe moving to the Toronto area? That's so exciting!

Oh, that's shitty news about the wedding. But digsmeet, yay! Should we think about what we want to do after we meet at city hall? It's kind of in a weird area going-out wise, so maybe we should plan something? Or should we just wait and see what we feel like? (Sorry, I plan for a living, it's hard for me to just let go...)

and meggo, if you'd like I can meet you at the train station, which is really really close to work, and we can go up to city hall together. Then there's zero chance of you getting lost. I can wear a carnation in my buttonhole or whatever so you'll know who I am. :P

I think I'm going to be spending the night in Toronto on Friday night (I might try to hit Ikea on Saturday too!!). So I think when I get in on the train - I might want to dump my stuff off wherever I end up staying.
But then yeah - we could definitely meet somewhere and head up to city hall together.

There's good Ethiopian restaurant that's pretty much downtown (downtown Toronto is pretty huge), about a 20 or 25-minute walk from City Hall. It's a little weird, kind of run-down, but the food is quite authentic and pretty cheap and very tasty. Service can be erratic, but the servers are always really nice. I've been there with a big group before, and they were great, if a little slow. I'm pretty sure they have a liquor licence, if anyone's wondering.

Um. 20-25 minute walk may or may not be a cab ride for me depending on how well I'm weinie-ing out the cold. OH wait, duh! I'll have a car. Do I want to drive? Eeek!

Omg, I don't even know how to exchange money, I'm such a loon!

Changing money 101:

If you have an Interac Banking Card-
Find a bank with a cash machine
Put in ATM card
Punch in PIN number
Select amount of cash
Out pops the funny coloured money!!!!
and your account will be deducted in US dollars

If you don't have an Interac banking card
- you can exchange money at the airport before you leave for Canada or when you get here.

re: driving, are you staying at a hotel in Mississauga? If you are, you could drive into Toronto and park at a lot for the rest of the day and then just walk/cab wherever you want to go, thus avoiding the 'where do I park' conundrum. Parking is a real pain in the ciy. Another thing to keep in mind is that our DUI laws are really, really strict. So if you plan on drinking, don't plan on driving.

If you're staying in a hotel in Toronto, just leave your car parked there. It'll save you a lot of hassle.

And if you're interested in going out after dinner (the Ethiopian place isn't really a late-night party place), we'll be kind of near the gay district, and there's a fun bar there called Slack Alice. Although, friday is retro dance night, so there may not be much room to hang. Or there are lots of other non-gay bars around too.

I think Interac is a canada-only network, but most bank machines will accept US cards on the Plus network, which I think is most US banks. Or you can withdraw canadian cash with a visa card at a bank machine.

Or like, just go to a bank or an exchange booth at the airport or a Money Mart downtown or whatever.

Or just pay with american cash, almost all businesses will accept US cash. The exchange rate at the cash register will be worse than if you change your money at a bank of course.

Man, I just wrote "change your body at a bank", which is a slightly more complicated procedure.

With re to the money exchange - I've never had a problem getting Canadian cash out of any of the atm machines in Canada. Unless they're broken of course. But they all seem to accept the same basic systems - plus is the one I had on my US account & it works just fine in Canada too.
I'm SO excited!!

edited to fix my spelling - my brain must already be on its three day weekend!

Oh good, thanks! IF we manage to get married I'll need the money in cash, so now I can rest easy that I can get it. Providing there's money in my account, ha!

Thanks too for the tip on parking. We're staying at the Delta Chelsea (pronounced chel-see-ah in Canada?) so I'll just leave it parked except for our other exploring and commuting to Mississagua of course.

I think Slack Alice sounds like much fun, at least to check it out. We never get to go out ya know with the babies and all, and our local choices are dank. Andree, if you and Zh want to go, we're there! Of course everyone is welcome, I just don't want y'all to feel pressured. Ha! the first gay bar Digsmeet!

CJ, you just have to find an ATM with a symbol that matches one of the symbols on the back of your bank card (cirrus, plus, interac). Most in north america are compatible.

Hmmm - I'm not technically allowed to go into the lamp section unsupervised - so we might be on to something... My biggest concern with the shopping trip is that I don't know how to get all that crap HOME.
Like I can go shop till my hearts content - but then I actually have to lug it all back home you know? And I don't know how much I can bring on the train etc. The "easy" solution to this would be to drive to TO - but since I've only ever been there once (and it was on a train & we never drove anywhere) - I don't think that would be wise... Not to mention the 401 scares me.
But if we can combine our brain power (for good, rather than evil) and figure out how to a. supervise each other and b. how to get all that stuff on the train - we might be on to something....

When I used to take the train home for xmas (in uni) I used to pack my stuff in a small suitcase that fit into a large empty suitcase. Then I would have an entire empty suitcase for stuff I'd be bringing back.

geogirl - this is what I was thinking about doing actually. I can't remember what I did with my luggage while on the train though. Did someone take it and put it somewhere? Cuz I don't remember overhead bins or anything (a la planes).

This would also be a great way to self-impose limits on myself. I could take things home - but only if they fit in the biggest suitcase I own....

If I remember correctly, don't they just stick the suitcase behind the last row of seats? I can't remember any restrictions on how much you can take. I remember having a ridiculous amount of bags/boxes on the train & never had to pay extra.
