Lawyers, helpful. Hm, well yes, of course in that they interpret the law. Helpful in that they ever give you a straight answer to anything? No. Ha, that's their job. But it's looking good for timing. Let's say if for some reason the wedding doesn't work out we still have a Digsmeet? I'm afraid we won't know until that day whether it will or not. Maybe if work takes it easy on me and we have the paperwork we need already we can try to get the license on the first day. That way I'd have a day to warn you if you don't want to come for just a howdy-hello. Now! Thinking positive: dress code! Ummm, I suspect it's going to be the layer thing but our recommendation is comfortable but nice. Like, if your Nana was taking you to a nice restaurant for brunch or something. We really have no idea what we're going to wear but it won't be super formal i.e. nothing that can't be packed in a suitcase. Is that enough guidance? Perhaps you should all wear funky hats. Yes, we like the hats idea, ha! Edited to say I actually have no idea how to even dress for work up there. I guess I need to get a sweater or two? How do business folk keep warm?? quote: In most business settings, you can wear a thin sweater (think cachemire, silk, or cotton for we common mortals) instead of the shirt in a dress suit. Otherwise, for more casual wear, you can wear a long sleeved twin set or something like that. But like Nathalie said, offices are generally well heated. Anything that would be appropriate in an office with overly enthusiastic AC will be just perfect. And avoid nylons if you can: heavier tights are good, pants are even better. Some women DO wear nylons year-round, but that's better left to experts What IS essential is a good wool or down coat, warm hat (which covers the ears!), gloves, wool or fleece scarf and good boots. And maybe an extra layer like a good wool sweater for cold spells like the one we have right now. IP: Logged |

I know! Minus 7 feeling like minus 23?? Holy crap! I have a good coat, I think. Hats and gloves are completely foreign. It will be a challenge to find those at all. Thanks for the tips on dressing though, I own one pair of jeans and a few pairs of capris. That's it besides skirts and shorts! IP: Logged |

-23C? oh it gets colder then that quick weather network search (i was curious) told me that where I am (1.5 hours westish of T.O) that the coldest temp last winter was -28.8C...and i doubt that includes windchill...although today was a nice and warm +2C IP: Logged |

The weather in Toronto area is really up and down. Some mornings, it's so cold I can't breath through my nose without nose-cicles. Other days, like today, are cold but compared to -30, feel like spring. Apparently there is a snow-storm expected in T.O for tomorrow with 15-20cm of snow! Well, I guess it'll be a white Christmas! ![]() Edited to say Crowjoy, I hope all your legal issues work out. If it doesn't, I'm still up for a digsmeet - we can go out an celebrate you moving here!! Yay!! Make yer own marriage license!! Even though I keep running into steps I didn't realize we'd have to take, I'm feeling optimistic today. Mailing off my documents to the lawyer, picking up more stuff Monday. I should have everything we need to the office of the registrar by the 7th, I hope. They claim they can process the authorization in about a week, so while that's cutting it pretty close it seems doable. Nothing is allowed to go wrong! IP: Logged |

crowjoy, I'm so happy to hear that it looks like the wedding will actually happen! But if it doesn't, I'm willing to provide glitter for the Digs-approved marriage licence. re: hats and scarves and such, you could always wait until you're actually here in Toronto before buying that stuff. Will you be staying at a hotel downtown or in Mississauga? If you're downtown, there are lots and lots of places that sell hats and scarves and gloves and all things meant to keep you warm in the winter. I'd also suggest you bring a pair of tights or two to wear under your pants in case there's a cold snap on while you're here. And maybe some thick socks to layer, as long as your boots/shoes have enough room in them for two layers of socks. As mentioned, the weather in Toronto can change overnight, so it's always good to be prepared. For business wear, sweaters are good, layered with button-down shirts or camisoles. Or warm twinsets, as kena mentioned (even better if the shell has sleeves). Where I work, it's often very cold (the heating system isn't the greatest, even though the building is only ten years old) so I always have an extra layer I can throw on if I'm cold. IP: Logged |

Well - as for the "what do business people wear" question - I can tell you that I mostly wear pants during the winter. This is not just cuz I'm lazy about shaving my legs - but it's a heck of a lot warmer. Also - plan on having one set of winter boots that you can trompse into work with and then store under your desk till the trip home. Gloves, hats, scarves - all a must & judging from the shops today - all very plentiful too. In every shape, color, size, style etc. I also have a fine pair of long johns - they're silk and are really thin - but they are SUPER warm. I don't normally wear them to work - but they do fight nicely under a pair of jeans in a pinch. (I'm wearing the top right now under a wool sweater that is unfortunately making my sunburn itch). I'm excited for the potential wedding too - I'll bring ribbons so we can add that to the do it yerself marriage cert if need be. And honestly - it will probably be tons better looking that mine- which hardly looks official at all. IP: Logged |

Well I got the piece of paperwork I needed locally, so all we're waiting on at this point is the letter from the lawyer. Once that's in hand, we send the whole thing off to wait for author-eye-zation. Hopefully that will be a non-hassle and is all we need to be a go! I've bought a few sweaters and discovered the perfect hat. Now we just need gloves and scarves. Oh yeah and that whole figure out what I'm doing for work thing. Writing that I also realized I need to work on the whole babies user manual thing for Mander's sister who's watching them. Then I thought I better make sure all y'all witness volunteers know that the stars of the murder will not be joining us. So sorry and if that changes your mind, I understand. Well, this is our first milestone. If we get there and don't hate it then the next step is to figure out the advantages we'd have in adopting the babies, should we move. That's the real key. So. many. steps. and thanks Polly! IP: Logged |

Merimoo's got it. Crazy huh? The hope is that since we'll be step parents with out legal marriage and all, that it's just a matter of signing some papers, as opposed to filing, doing home studies, going to court, blah blah blah. If anyone knows someone who's done this, please give them my email and ask them to contact me? IP: Logged |

Welcome Steph! I too was born and raised in Toronto area (born in Brampton, raised in Oakville, where I still live). Do you live and work right in downtown? I also have lots of family in Montreal, and visit there a few times a year. I love downtown Montreal, especially in the summertime. I hear freezing rain is coming tonight, so time to bring out the skates! Crowjoy, hope things are going well with your plans. I'm sad the little ones aren't coming, but I'm still excited to meet the murder-mama!! [This message has been edited by Isabel (edited 01-05-2005).] IP: Logged |

Can we review the DigsWedding plans a bit? Ceremony is at 3 PM right? Are we planning to do something beforehand? afterwards? So far, my own plans are to take the early train on Friday morning (it arrives in TO at 11h20), reserve a bed at the youth hostel, and come back with another train on Saturday. But I'm still flexible as I haven't reserved anything yet; I could just as well arrive on Thursday and leave on Friday night instead. (If anyone else needs budget accomodations for the night, here's the link to the youth hostel) IP: Logged |

heee! so true. it'd better not get down to the -teens. I seriously think my boobs will freeze off. I can't take it! On a somewhat related note: since Victoria gets marginally less cold and rain and snow, every time G is home he'll say "It never gets THIS cold in Victoria." or "It never rains like THIS in Victoria." in stupid voice. quote: What date again? I think I'm unclear on that one. My plans were to catch the early train (but not the really early train) up there (maybe with Hubby) and get a room somewhere. Have only been to the city once & don't know it that well - so I don't know where city hall is in relation to anything else. I think we should bring name badges too with our digsnames - and do something to find each other - like everyone who is going to the wedding should wear a red patch over their left eye or something so we can say "Hey - you must be here for the wedding!" (unless there are a bunch of random red-patch-wearers that day). IP: Logged |

Supposed wedding (waiting for my letter from lawyer tap tap) is January 21st at 2pm, at the City Hall wedding chamber. When we're just a little bit more for sure I'll post a link, or you can just go look at the city hall site under weddings. I am off work the evening of Thursday. We'll have hopefully already gotten the license (as in, Mander can go stand in line and get that while I'm at work) and have Friday all day to just relax and prepare ourselves for *gasp* legal marriage. I think we can probably be available for hanging out before hand and after I hope we'll all go out and get a bite or a drink or something. I'm sorry to say I can't treat you all to a real wedding reception but I can probably buy a round. Oh! And while I like red eye patches, I'm still hoping for the weird hat brigade! Oh yeah, anyone who plans to attend should email me so I can give you my cell number. Hm. Wonder if my cell works in Canada... will check on that. PLEASE take lots of pictures to post at the wedding!!! I'm so sad I can't make it, but school, and 16 hours of driving (not to mention no vehicle) would make it impossible. It feels like you'll be so close, though! And all you gals complaining about -3.... for shame! It was -21 here today, with windchill making it feel like -36! And it did - I was out there! Damn NW Ontario! I hope the storms and whatnot don't delay the murder wedding.... IP: Logged |
