From working in a print shop and using (mainly American) knitting/crafty patterns, I do almost all of my measurements/math in inches, just because I haven't used cm's since high school. All the crap I do at work is measured in inches and square feet (i.e. engineering drawings), and I use inches for our digital cutter, too. And doing 4 inches of knitting just seems like it takes less time than doing 10.something cm's. Totally a brain trick, I know, but still....

I'll have to do a drive-by and see exactly where it is. I've driven past so many times, but don't know which part of downtown it's near...somewhere in the middle! I can't even remember the name of the place right now! d-oh!

yay mini-digs-meet!

No - he grew up in Leamington. But we live in LaSalle.

Actually it's not bad. It's 30 miles - and takes less than an hour (on a good day) - on a not overly good day - it takes 1 hour. (and I don't work in Leamington - I work in MI - Troy to be specific).
HE works in Leamington sometimes - like that's where his company is - but when he's on site he's usually somewhere around the county. (and he hates the commute)

Ok, so we did the drive-by tonight for the mini-digs meeting in Oakville. The place is called Jam Martini Bar - 225 Lakeshore Rd - 2 blocks west of Trafalgar Road. Can't wait to try it out!

Hi Kena,
Welcome back! Thanks for bumping the Montreal thread. Since I am traveling with my mum and her main purpose in life is to shop, we'll be spending lots of time doing that. She has a guidebook that talks about some underground malls and some outlets that are supposed to be great. Any opinions on those- what is not to be missed, and what are a waste of time? Thanks!

You'll have a bunch of underground malls on Ste-Catherine, but it's mostly chains - stuff you'd find almost anywhere else.

St-Laurent street (between Sherbrooke and Mont-Royal) and Mont-Royal street have fun local designer stores. Some of it is expensive, but you can find good deals. St-Denis has lots of cute little shops - lots of ethnic stuff, jewelry, etc... For outlets, you have a big Château outlet at Namur metro station. And I think there's a bunch of them at Sauvé too.

If you like fancy food, the Jean-Talon market in the Italian neighbourhood is great. You have lots of local stuff (fancy jams, pâtés, etc...), great cheese, etc...

I dreamed of Canadian geese last night. A huge flock of them flying north. I looked them up in my book and they represent migration and quests. I've already sent a nagging note to the guy in HR.

That's all for now (tap tap tap.)

Well I got a number! It appears at first conversion to be a pay cut, which seems a little unreasonable given the higher cost of living in Toronto. But there are other layers to consider like that's base but can my boss make it equal and how does the money I pay for insurance translate? In any case, it's not SO much lower that it nixes the whole idea and it's not higher, which might have made my boss balk. So, now I will proceed with planning our trip and discuss more with my boss when he's back after the holidays. It feels a bit neutral but I shall take it as good news!

that stinks that it seems to be lower, crowjoy. The Canadian dollar is doing really well (best in years and years) against the US dollar, so take that into consideration as well. What sort of employment situation do you think Mander may be in up here?

Well it's hard to say... her training is as a furniture maker, which seems to be regional in popularity, plus experience as a retail manager in a woodworking store. We think of her as a SAHM though so while it's a possibility for her to work it wouldn't be our first choice. I have confirmed though that base salary is minus the benefits allowance, so that might be the dif there. We're back to research mode though, having passed this "will the boss say no" milestone. I like research mode!

I'm back from Montreal, and not that happy about it I spent Thanksgiving up there with my mum, shopping and eating at cool ethnic restaurants (Afghan, Tibetan, Ethiopian.) It's funny to hear you say you're jealous of another Thanksgiving, because we don't celebrate it (in fact, every year we leave the country for it. I grew up in an immigrant family that thinks it is just the most ridiculous holiday ever- people should be thankful every day, not one commercial holiday.) But anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed Montreal- although it was COLD, almost colder than anywhere I have ever experienced (sooo much colder than New England.) Beautiful old buildings, great food, cute boutiques, and SO clean! We are already throwing around ideas for a trip back...

I glad you liked it (despite the bad but typical late November weather. It's the worst time of the year in my opinion; once it starts snowing it gets drier and brighter). What neighbourhoods did you end up visiting? What did you like best?

We actually thought the weather was brilliant, just frigid. No rain, blue skies, and much drier than down here in NY. Coming home, the weather felt balmy in comparison!
We went to Chinatown, which is very small but had great shops full of the preserved fruit and candy that I love. We spent a lot of time in Old Montreal (our hotel- La Tour Centre Ville- was just a few blocks from Notre Dame, which of course is amazing with all that detail.) We went to a great Afghan restaurant on rue Berri/Duluth in an adorable area that I'd love to live in, but I don't know what neighborhood that is. We walked up and down St. Catherine, St. Laurent, St. Denis, and Rene Levesque (where our hotel was). I strolled around McGill and UQAM because I love university areas, and was really impressed by the facilities. I visited a friend in Laval, so we drove around a bit to get there, and we went to the Biodome on our last day (I love penguins...!)

Next time we go, I'd like to make it in the spring or early summer so we can spend more time by the river and hike up Mont Royal for the view. It was way too cold for that this trip (at least for us- we're wimps!)

Have you ever heard of the trips you can take up to Cap St. Madeleine (I've probably slaughtered the name, but I always forget it) during March to see the seal migration or something like that? I've always wanted to do that..

That's the Plateau; probably the hippest neighbourhood in Montreal right now. It's the whole area around St-Denis and St-Laurent from Sherbrooke to Laurier streets. (South of that is the Quartier Latin, North is Beaubien-Rosemont, a mostly residential neighbourhood, then Little Italy) I used to live there, but we've relocated to Ville-St-Laurent (Du Collège subway station) because my boy works in the West Island. It's really a great neighbourhood, if a little expensive.

There's two places you might be refering to:

- One is Cap-de-la-Madeleine which is a small uneventful city near Trois-Rivières, midway between Quebec City and Montreal, but I doubt there's any seals there.

- The other is Îles-de-la-Madeleine, which is a beautiful chapelet of tiny islands in the St-Lawrence Gulf (way past Prince Edward Island, even though they speak french and are part of Quebec), where it would be possible to see seals I guess (never heard of it, but it's in the middle of the ocean so it would be logical.) It's quite far away though; you have to go there by plane, or by car then by boat (it's a long two-days trip from Montreal).

Uh, not that it matters in the least...glad you had a good time, Heatherina!

Hi! Me again! Got some good news today. First, I've confirmed that my boss can up my Cdn offer to match my current salary after conversion back to US (where the bill will ultimately go.) Second I've also learned that the company pays all benefits in Canada. That right there is a $10,000/year savings for us. So, even if I can't convince my boss to match my current salary (and I know no reason why I can't) we'd still work out even/a little ahead. That will help toward the double taxes. All in all it's looking very much like it will work out pretty evenly, in spite of cost of living increases.

Ok, now to the good stuff! I am going to host an event in Mississagua and have tentatively booked my rooms (for the event) for Jan 19 and 20. So, looking at that week, do we have witnesses? Eeee! My event is only 1 day but I booked 2 for safety. Once we know everyone's availability I can look at flights and do any tweaking from there. Third week of January? Anyone? Anyone?

You might be able to get a credit on your US taxes for taxes paid to a foreign country. I get this - so definitely look into it come tax time. And keep your voter registration up & register in FL for absentee ballots.

Would this be IN Missisauga? Or Toronto? Cuz I would LOVE to be a witness - just need to know where exactly. (can I just say that everytime you ask about witnesses I think of that song that goes: "Can I get a wit-ness?")

Springtime clothes? In Toronto? In January?
Yikes. Well - perhaps if it was in a building. I was in Toronto once in January and was fairly convinced I was going to freeze my tookus off. I had never BEEN so cold - and I've lived in Detroit for the last 18 years!
But I'm sure it will be lovely nonetheless!

Bring your ice skates too (I'm sure you have them - you live in FL after all...) - there is an outdoor rink that is so fun to skate on when the big fat snowflakes are falling! - okay, I've only skated on the one in Windsor, but seeing how I love that one - I can only imagine Toronto's would be better.

ice skating is fun so long as you wear a LOT of layers. Think of Randy from the Christmas Story? The kid who can't put his arms down?

Yea, that's me when I ice skate. I try to figure out how to put two pairs of gloves on at the same time (I think I figured it out this year - I'll have to take pics)
