This huge list of MLS abbreviations says "electric light fixture."

Okay, who advertises having electricity these days? Canada has had electric power for at LEAST five years now, it's old hat.

I can stick around til 6 no problem.

CJ be careful with the oil heat, I think thats getting really difficult to get insurance (manditory in Canada). In order to get a mortgage your house has to be insured. Things to look out for or evil insurance companies will make your life hell

-wiring done in 70s (aluminum)or before 40s(knob & tube)
-any heat other than natural gas
-furnace better if less than 20yrs old
-must be pvc/copper plumbing, no galvanized steel or cast iron
-100amp service is much easier, some will take 60amp, but you'll pay more

Just a few off the top of my head, there are more though, believe me.

Geogirl, thanks for that. We already live in the hardest house to insure, it would be a drag to find ourselves there again. I wondered about the oil too. Maybe the seller is willing to make some concessions to compensate. Hmm.

I'm aiming for our trip up to be the week of Dec. 6th-ish. Witnesses! are you available that week, in general? Any black out dates?

Sounds good. I'm available during the week or the week-end, so that's not an issue. And I checked with my dad about the train tickets, so that is ok too. (I could probably go all around the globe with the miles he's accumulated)

Wee! I'm going to be a witness! Wee!

Yay!!

I spoke with our HR guy today. The first hurdle to all of this lovely dreaming is for him to calculate what my new Cdn salary would be. It isn't a straight across converstion, it's adjusted, etc so if it turned out to be much of an increase my boss might not be able to sell his boss on it. Keep your fingers crossed that a) it's a huge raise and b) it's an easy sell. (cross cross) I'll know sometime next week. Oh yeah and he also said he thinks it will take about 6 weeks to happen. Eeek!

Wha? Why is oil heat so bad? In Maine, it's the primary heating source, and it's that way in NB, too. Why would oil be bad for insurance?

(Here, woodstoves, if they share a flue, especially, are hard to insure.) Just curious.

Oh my god! I don't visit this thread in a week, and now Crowjoy is going to move to T.O area!! Ah, that's so exciting!!

If you need any other witnesses or guests for your wedding, I'd be honoured! Casion and I are sisters, so you get 2 for 1 digsters!

I live in Oakville, and commute to Toronto every day for school (I'm at Ryerson U). I go to Mississauga a lot, I think it's one of the most diverse cities in the area - I go for great Chinese food all the time, and there seems to be so much more variety of everything - shops, restaurants, etc.

I'm available on weekends to witness...

greschya, I think the oil tanks make them nervous, fire hazzard, leaks, etc. Natural gas is the primary heat source here, so they tend to force people to switch over to gas.

CJ you can probably have the current owners fix things before you take possession (sp?), somethings they will ask you to do within 60 days, & somethings they'll just charge you more for 'high risk'. It depends on the company, but I just thought I'd let you know where the red flags are!

Uh, hello?!?

Oil heat - yes.

Not a problem.

Insurance is totally standard on oil heat. Yep. The newer the furnace the better though in terms of efficiency.

Electric heat in Toronto is not so good -expensive during a cold winter. Wood furnace/stove/fireplace requires some extra inspection for insurance purposes.

Ah, the old heating oil debate (frrp). I've asked the realtor who represents the property that and a million other questions. Of course, he might tell me anything to make a sale. It's probably a good thing I have to wait until next week to find out what the deal with my salary would be, this way I can try to focus on other stuff for a few minutes. As if!

Unfortunately for me early December is probably going to be consumed with my final exams

Toronto digsters - I would possibly be up for a meetup? Let me know if you guys are planning for downtown or Mississauga though (I'm in downtown, not originally Torontoian, and my knowledge of the 905 is pathetically sketchy...)

A word on oil heating. When my parents bought their house it had an oil furnace. They had it replaced with natural gas. I don't think it was much of a big deal to remove it, someone had to come and pump out any residual oil, and clean it, so that it wouldn't create some sort of environmental problem. Then the new furnace went in just fine, used all the old duct work. I'm not sure how expensive it was, but I'm guessing (because of my parents financial situation at the time) that it wasn't horrid.
On another note, we had our first snow today (here in London), so by Dec.6, make sure you bring a warm coat/hat/mitts/scarf/boots

I think we're looking at after the first of year now, it's just such a crazy time with the holidays and Mander's party coming up. Also, any reason I can invent to go for business will involve alot of work hours that are dedicated to other projects right now. So hang on for us!

Still no word from HR, but it's only Tuesday right? Like, Tuesday before business hours where HR is located. Tap tap tap.

heatherina - kena does pop in. i lived in montreal for 7 years, until last year, but, well, kena seems to have more of a life than i did, so you might want to aim questions for her...

except if you're going shopping, st. laurent's okay, but you should REALLY see st. denis. all kinds of local quebec designers, cool stores.

When you say Canada is metric, does this mean you use A4 paper or what I think the Americans call "letter size"?

Most software is American, so we use 8 1/2 by 11 paper, which is letter size and, I believe, slightly smaller than A4. Though A4 is an option for your page setup.

We use metric in the sense that distances are measured in kilometres not miles. And theoretically we talk in kilograms rather than pounds, but I think it's going to take another generation for that to really take hold...and we use celsius rather than fahrenheit, but I'm not sure if that's a metric thing.

And I believe our litres and/or gallons are different (from both the U.S. and the U.K.), but you'd have to talk to someone who measures in those sizes - maybe a regular purchaser of gas? - to know for sure.

General conversions are 2.2 lbs to a kilogram, which is 1000 grams. 1 cup=250 grams, a meter is roughly equal to a yard (3feet)& a kilometer is 1000 meters.

Really rough guestimation for temperature conversions (I grew up on american tv) from celcius to farenheit is double it, add 30 & subtract 1 for every 10 degrees greater than forty.

I know that sounds confusing, but if you have a temp of 7C, 2x=14, 14+30=44, being less than 10 degrees above forty, you leave it. So 7C=44F roughly, it is actually 44.6. It works better for lower temperature, it may be off by a few degrees as you get hotter.

Litres are the same everywhere in the world. I've never actually seen anything measured in gallons except when visiting the US.

Sometimes parents refer to 4L of milk as a gallon, but not really people our age. I know that tonnes and tons are different.

Canada has messed-up measuring though. I had an american friend try to explain "4 inches" to me yesterday, when really, I measure most things around that length in either centimetres or inches. People are measured in feet and weighed in pounds too, but long distances are in kilometres. We're either still in transition from imperial or we've developed our own happy medium, I'm not sure which...

ounces and troy ounces are different too.

I do think it's funny that the only things America seems to use metric for are drugs and firearms. All the naughty people have adopted that newfangled French metric system....

I say we all go back to using pecks, bushels and leagues.

This sounds much better than Hubby's math - his is "Double it and add 32."
Which doesn't really work - and I've pointed out repeatedly that it does NOT work at all for the number 0 since you can't technically double zero. (I'm not a math whiz - so I'm quite proud that I have that tiny bit of knowledge).
