Hey Nathan, I lived in Winnipeg for four years. I have to say that it really is a beautiful city, when you factor in the amount of green space. I flew into the 'Peg for a wedding this summer, and going over the Osborne Village area, all you could see were trees, with the winding river going through them. It actually made me catch my breath... Anyway, I miss it sometimes...

So, I'm just wondering, would it be too excessively stalkerish to peruse the pictures of the first year students posted on the walls at my fine institution of higher legal learning to try and figure out which one is mr. jazzberry?

I'm thinking yes.

You could just tell me, jazz, but that would take all the fun away...

hehehe...G's been trying to figure out who you are, too. It's hard, since I haven't told him your real name

hint: his last name starts with an "A", and sounds like "gallon" He said he looks mean in it, I don't think that would help, though.

Have they put up the alumni photos from 2003 yet? Then you could look me up and tell me if I looked crappy in the photo or not. See, the tabs they put on you are really tight and they made me feel like I had thirteen chins.

Heehee, I know who Mr. Jazzberry is!

Well, I think I figured it out now too, so there! Pflgh! (a raspberry really doesn't translate well to text...)

I don't think I know who you are. Or do I? Anyways, I can't tell you if you have 13 chins in your picture. On the one hand, I checked, and I didn't see anyone with 13 chins. On the other hand, there's a notice saying it is 'incomplete' with a list of pictures still to come, so yours might not be up yet.

Conclusion: inconclusive.

Hi everyone! Popping in because I'm seriously considering a transfer to the Toronto office. There is so much to figure out like how to do that exactly but right now we're just trying to decide if Toronto is the town for us. You all know me as well as anyone, aside from the cold, think I could hack it?

P.S. how cold does it get??

Though I don't actually live in Toronto, I spend quite a bit of time there. There is tons to do, the live music scene is pretty good, the arts scene is great, tons of diversity.

It is a haven for new immigrants, so there is restaurants & such for just about every different culture. Its easy to get organic veggies & such, there are even restaurants that cater to vegans.

I hate to admit it, but with you coming from FL, it will be cold for you, but honestly, you learn to adjust in a bout a year. If it's any consolation, Buffalo NY weather is much worse. Our summers are hot, with cool spring & fall, it's just dec-mar that are cold (usually).

Basically the same as NYC or Chicago.

My trusty AAA book says, in Celsius, average low of -8 to avg. high of 27. Which is about 18 to 81 deg. F.

When I was up there last month, it was about 10F cooler than Boston, for reference.

what I like about living in the Toronto area (I work downtown Toronto, so I'm here almost every day) is...

(in regards to weather)...I love having 4 seasons. fall and spring are absolutely beautiful...gorgeous leaves, balmy, sunny days. I like that we can go skiing just an hour away (there's even a ski hill right in Toronto) in the winter. but, just when it seems to be dragging on a little too long, it's spring again. I snowboard, so I think having just all one season would be too boring for me!

and it's a great city for multiculturalism - a very diverse group of people happily co-existing in a unique major city.

you should come visit, crowjoy!

Weather aside (Mander promises I can have as many funky vintage coats as I want!) is there a sense of community there? If you don't live IN the city, are you in a suburb? How far out do you have to be to be in the "country?" Is there a gay/lesbian community? I know marriage is legal and that makes me verrry happy. Does anyone know how gay families are regarded? If there are lots of kids? I'm searching the web with minimal success.

We're both very excited by the possibility of living in a multi-cultural city again, having access to lots of fun theatre (the comedy festival!) and the adventure in general. I assume there is a university there? Gah, the idea of transferring to another school is worse than thinking about moving!

In Toronto, there is U of T (world wide recognition), York University & Ryerson. there is a large gay/lesbian community & marriage is legal. There are still some political fights going on about this, but at this point it looks like the marriage is here to stay. Toronto's pride parade drew something like 1 million spectators last year, so it's pretty big.

for pride info www.pridetoronto.ca

For stuff to do in the city, I use www.toronto.com. they list concerts, comedy, theatre & such. I'll look around for other sites for you.

The city is about 2.5 mil, with the greater toronto area about 3.5 mil. The sprawl is pretty big. Sometimes it's hard to tell where new cities begin & old ones end, but there are some really pretty surrounding areas. Niagara falls is a 1.5hr drive & I'm pretty partial to the scenery on the Niagara escarpment (runs from about 2 hrs on one side of tor. to the falls on the other side). There are many smaller communities north of the city.

crowjoy, I live a 20 minute train ride west of the city. I am in a suburb, but it also has its own community feel to it...quite nice, actually. As I said, I work in T.O, so I often go out around the city, although I'm not an expert, I'll try and answer your questions:

I guess the "country" would mean fairly small communities, so in that case, about an hour or two away?

yes, there is a very active gay community. our pride parade is one of the biggest and best, as far as we're concerned. marriage is legal, and most regard them with the same respect as straight families. I myself am straight, so maybe I'm not the best to answer. but, my one of best friend's mom just married another woman, and has not encountered any single form of discrimination for it (to my best knowledge).

there are 3 major universities in the city: university of Toronto, York university, and Ryerson university. check out their websites if you're interested.

any more questions? keep 'em coming!

dang, do you they have a vancouver office? we're extra awesome! okay I'm so excited that you might be in visiting range.

Here's the city's website if you haven't been already.

There are several universities, yes, at delicious canadian prices:
U of T
York U
..plus I'm sure a glut of community colleges that offer courses that are transferable to universities. Those would be about half the price and often offer more flexible hours.

There is homophobia everywhere in the world, but Canada's got it on over most places I feel. BC is considered sort of the most user-friendly place to be gay, but really Ontario legalized gay marriage first, and Toronto's pride week is pretty much the hands down best in the country if you want to take that as an indicator.

okay that about taps out my toronto knowledge, I haven't been there in years. in conclusion: you should TOTALLY move to canada! I offer free metric system lessons and butter tarts! please!!

Butter tarts! I'm there!!

It's so funny, when we were talking exotic locales for our honeymoon (which we never took) I said Toronto and Mander thought I was crazy. Now look. Ha!

It's so heartening to hear all this. I have IM'd with some coworkers in our T.O. (ooh, look how local I am already) office and they say it is reallly easy to transfer, that the company attorneys take care of everything! Can it really be so? Wow. My big concern now is how our family will be regarded for immigration, if Mander and Sofie can come in on me or if they'll have to do their whole application and everything on their own. Can't get a human at the Consulate so maybe the company attorneys can do that too.

And BC actually holds huge appeal but my boss would sorta prefer I stick to actual Support Centers. And I don't think I'll push on that too hard. Besides, being so close to NY Toronto feels so much more realistic, like I have a frame of reference for a move like that.

I've gotten no work done today at all looking at all these websites!

For pretty much any legal purpose here, common law spouse = legally married spouse. The CIC website sprinkles "or common-law spouse" liberally through their self-assessment tool. And since you've been living together in a conjugal relationship for more than 6 months, under canadian law you're common-law married.

(But heck, you could fly up and get married while you check the city out, I mean CIC will definitely respect an ontario marriage certificate. )

Research shows that yes, US citizens can marry in Ontario! Surely that would help in the process. I've also discovered that same sex families are considered families for immigration purposes, yay! Now to just hear back from my HR rep about what it all takes and timelines, etc. I don't know if a company transfer makes the wait any different, but 15 months sounds pretty good. I could finish school here then (with a big full time push anyway.)

I'm actually starting to feel calm again. Breathe in, breathe out.

My friends did it- actually got married IN Toronto too - granted it was a he & a she - but I'm sure that doesn't matter.

What I know about Toronto - I was there in January of 03 and it was COOOOLD - but I'm a weeny when it comes to cold - and I think it was some remarkeably frigid weekend anyway.
But it didn't stop people - there were ice skaters etc.

I have hear that TO is pricey though - we have friends who live there (or in a suburb) and it's not cheap. But I would love to be in a city with all that culture & international flare etc. And it seems like you could be in the center of things too. Like you could go to Niagra relatively quickly (Niagra escarpment is gorgeous & it's a huge wine producing area with wineries practically every five feet you can stumble into - and out of)
You could go a few hours and be in Southwestern Ontario and visit really nice people (*cough*cough* - like ME!!) - and you could be near Lake Erie & see some cool islands.

Weee! Crowjoy is going to come to Toronto! I don't know much about Toronto except that appartments are more expensive than in Montreal, that there's a huge tower in the middle, that the Indian food is awesome, and that the U of T campus is absolutely gorgeous (I went there for a conference last spring)

BUT Toronto is barely four hours from Montreal in train, and I have a bunch of free tickets! Digsmeet!!!

Ok, enough of the blonde sixteen yo enthusiasm More seriously, did you consider visiting before you make more definitive plans? You could get a feel for the city, check the neighbourhoods, etc... And it would make it feel much more real. Plus, I would totally go there to meet you and try to bribe you with lots of yummy Montreal treats.

I'll tell you what, I'm practically jovial this afternoon, which after my mopey morning is a huge turnaround. I wanna get married in Toronto!!

According to my company policy, I will convert to local payroll if I transfer, and I think that means a cost of living adjustment. Let's hope because Florida CoL is LOW.

And geo, no, Mander is our SAHM, so even though she can show work experience she isn't currently employed. That's why I think it's important for us to go as a family. That looks really good though!

Oh, I'm also being interviewed as a result of my inquiries and you might see me in Canadian media. I was sure to include my middle name so y'all will know it's me. ha!

We'll have the pull out waiting! (or be happy to help you with comfortable accomodations, ha!)

Fifteen months is how long it took this gay couple I was reading about, from decision to landing. The consulate says there is a 1 year backlog. I don't know yet if the company transfer will make it happen faster though. About a year is good because it means if I bust my hump I could maybe finish school. Or did I already say that? I'm exhausted already today from all this! Excited and exhausted, which beats outraged and depressed any day.

Yay, crowjoy!

Just so you know, T.O. is pretty much the New York City of Canada: it's where all the movie stars go, it's where everything happens, it's the only Canadian city that a lot of non-Canadians have ever heard of (teehee). I've been there a few times, and it is great for culture (I *heart* Chinatown!), and for nightlife, daylife, and any-other-kindalife, it was a little too big for me, but I've been told that feeling goes away (and I'm from a small city, so....). I hope you make the move, and it's everything you imagined. Keep us posted!

My boy was brought into Canada from NZ on a company transfer, he was offered his current job in September 2003 by the end of January 2004 he was living and working in Canada. I don't know if the fact he was single coming into the country helped him get his work visa or not.

err...I'm going to have to disagree on that one for several reasons.

*****************

To play devils advocate for you, crowjoy, here are some things that you might NOT like about Canada:

- higher taxes
- the country is very large and very spread out (1/10 the population of the US, more space)
- fewer 24hr markets and drive-thrus, and earlier closing times
- smaller/fewer box stores
- hockey is an obsession, not just a sport (to the point that I hesitate to travel or take night classes around the Canucks schedule)

I can't think of anything else for you, because I love my country. I'm sure meggo would have more for you, being a transplanted American herself.

Timeframe really is a big question now that we've done more research. Like, housing is freaking us out! But if we have a year to prepare, hopefully we'd be able to buy a home. It's weird to think about being in a condo or apartment, let alone a basement apartment. Oh the visions of damp dark places that conjures! I need a better feel for how much house my "local payroll" would afford us and where we'd really want to look. Anyone know the name of the papers in Toronto?

And btw, thanks for all the support. Part of me thinks this is all a silly reaction to an election and my enthusiasm will fade once the idea turns into work (like actually moving) but there is alot of enthusiasm for the idea in its own right and I keep reminding myself we'd been considering this before today too. In any case, having you all be so helpful and happy about us thinking this way is really warming. To quote the teletubbies, biiiiig hugs!
