Also, dating another boy who is majorly into salt water aquariums and snowboarding. He can (and generally does) buy anything he wants. Does anybody have any suggestions of something really cool to get him? I would love to surprise him with something awesome and unexpected.

Would it be possible for you to find or make an aquarium ornament that had to do with snowboarding? That might be pretty cool. Of course, I have no knowledge or experience about aquarium stuff, so perhaps not...

I like the snowboarder dude for the aquarim as a stocking stuffer. Any ideas for a "big" gift-- $50 or so.

a mecatronics (type of engineering?) friend of mine got a binary watch this year for his birthday. All the boys chipped in and gave him the ultimate just-for-you present. Because no one else will ever be able to tell them time using it!

(I'm not being rude to those of you who do get binary code, I'm just gently teasing )

Ok, I just spent an awful lot of time browsing through thinkgeek to find a gift for boy (got a few ideas, but nothing definitive yet). And while I'm at it, I thought I'd give you a selection of things that would make a great gift for your favorite geek

USB light for laptops: For the laptop owner who travels a lot

Security device that plugs into usb port: Just cool

Geeky Swiss-Army Knife: If boy didn't already have both a knife and a usb key, that's what he'd get. Very very cool.

Uber geek calendar: For the long time geek

Yeah, that's what I call a "usb key". The Swiss Army knife linked above has that (in 64 Mb, 128 Mb or 256 Mb) PLUS a led light PLUS knife and scissors and stuff. It's like the ultimate geek tool!

Edited to add that I found boy's gift finally... I'll try to find a tail for his stunt kite, I'll stencil him a custom Isaac Asimov t-shirt, and I'll buy him an optical mouse for work (because his company doesn't supply them; they still have old roller-style mouses and he hates that. He's been meaning to buy one for months.)

Why are so many boys geeks? Mine had a grandfather (passed away now) who was a submariner during WWII, and he has this obsession with model submarines and books on WWII. On top of that he has all these "How it works" books, and a collection of Star Wars figures (I think my collection of Beatles Yellow Submarine figures is better!).

On top of that he has a geeky computer job, but then again, so do I...

AND an optical mouse was also on his christmas list

Christmas is falling into place so much more this year than it ever has, thank goodness. Most of my presents are already purchased!

Mom: a mother's necklace from Redenvelope.com - she loves this kind of stuff. Last year I looked in vain for an affordable mother's bracelet/necklace/etc. This is good because it's affordable if my brother and sister split the cost with me.

Dad: earlier this year I went to a conference at a ranch/hotel place with a neat (and semi-famous) golf course. He is SOOO into golf, but usually just buys his golf stuff himself. I got him a hat from the golf course.

Stepmom: bracelet, purchased this summer

G: air compressor (he's been DYING for one, and I'm still going to get it even though he's already figured it out)

G's mom: probably a bracelet (Red Envelope has a really nice one with pearls and a little "Mom" charm but it's a little too expensive. I'm sure I can find something similar.)

G's dad: no idea, usually the hardest to shop for because he buys what he wants for himself and I don't think it matters too much.

Sister: I etched a glass platter for her and her fiancee earlier this year

Brother: philosophy book purchased in London

Brother in law #1: book on his favorite author, purchased in London

Brother in law's wife: toiletries from Neal's Yard Remedies, purchased in London

16 year-old Sister in law: toiletries from same place, plus a cool butterfly thing you stick on your window (purchased in Amsterdam)

Brother in law #2: OMG, I have no idea. I totally need help. He's 14 and only wants money, but honestly, he's a little spoiled and sometimes I feel like he doesn't appreciate anything. He sold his Playstation because he just wanted the money. I think I might get him a gift certificate to Best Buy, but does anyone have any other ideas for a 14-year old boy?

For Dave: Home Movies Season 1 DVDs, Arrested Development Season 1 DVDs, some good goretx gloves, miscellany

For Mom: PJs, fuzzy socks. . . also, my Dad had us order her an electric keyboard setup, she really wants to learn how to play, so we have a gigantor keyboard, stand, stool and bag here for her. (They are spending xmas with us this year.) So, I'm really excited to be part of that.

For Dad: Still working on it. Hands down, the hardest person to buy for, ever.

Sister & BF: Photo album she was covetting this summer that I found on clearance at Target, BHG cookbook, good kitchen towels (they just got a house.)

I also just ordered set of topo maps form USGS.gov. We have them in my house, and they both loved them, so I'm getting ones for where they grew up, their summer camps, and the towns where they met, work, and now live. Sort of a life history in 1:24k scale.

Here's what I have:

Parents: digital scale
Sister#1: gold necklace/pendant
BIL: Henckels mezzaluna
Niece: Munschworks 1
Sister#2: we're probably going to go to a spa together after Christmas
Sister #2's BF: PepperBall
Uncle: Book - Travels, by Michael Crichton
Cousin: CD - Best of U2, 1980-90
Cousin: White gold amethyst pendant
Cousin: silver and pearl pendant
Friends: Sugar Scrub
Boy: video of his undergrad convocation (in which he made a speech)
Boy's sister: sugar scrub
Boy's parents: kitchen stuff, bottle of wine
Boy's family: chocolate truffles (still have to make these)

I still don't know if/what I'm going to by for my boss. She might get something for me, but do I have to get something for her? What's the proper ettiquette for this? Our company is just the two of us, if that helps at all.

I'm pretty happy that I'm pretty much done and I can use the rest of my free time this month to decorate the house and make crafts! yay!

Ooh! Found a gift for my dad. A WiFi detecting keychain. They are going to be driving to PA and FL right after the holidays, and will be looking for hotspots, so I just made it easier. I hope. I actually ordered three -- it was buy two, get one free, and I wanted one... not sure what I'll do with the other one. Emergency geek gift?

I loved the Utili-key I saw on thinkgeek for a Christmas prezzie for my boy- but thought I'd look on Eb@y before buying. I guess this is an Eb@y triumph as well, but plus shipping and insurance, I got it for $12.07, which is about four bucks less than I would have paid with shipping at the site. And it comes with the warranty and such still.

Now I'm just waiting on the Ronnie Coleman DVD one...what a combination- Mr. Olympia fan and huge tech geek!

This is incredibly worthy but my parents who claim they don't need anything may be getting something from here:
http://www.oxfamunwrapped.com/
or here http://www.sendachristmascow.org.uk/ (who have a sister organisation in the US: http://www.heifer.org/)
Oxfam is cheaper the the others so I may get my rents a little something for themselves but a goat or chickens for someone who is in need of far more stuff too

jpunca, thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, I asked G what he thought would be better for his brother, and G said, "we're giving him money" in a way that meant "I don't want to mess with it anymore".

But maybe I'll bring up the poker thing.

Yay! Boy's gift arrived today, and the engraving in all correct. Whew. It's a very small silver compass. On the back it reads "For B: May we always find our way. Love, A." So sentimental and silly, but I think he'll love it.

The rest of the crew is planned, if not completely bought:

Mom: Framed print of a mother and child I got for steal at an art auction.

Dad: Framed photo I took in the desert.

Brothers: Bar-be-que? Or maybe a few CDs?

B's family: Board games and a small midwestern-y food basket.

Friends: ??? Probably end up buying a round of martinis

thanks for the response! I thought my post was too long for anyone to notice a question

Food-ish gifts are a good idea. Before I posted, I was thinking of getting her and her family a nice big popcorn bowl with movie related goodies (blockbuster GCs, microwave popcorn, candy, etc), since I spend a lot of time with her and her husband and kids when we work. But, the popcorn bowl I wanted to get sold out and I haven't really found any other similar ones for the same price.

Would it be cheesy to give her baked goods or homemade truffles?

I'm being semi-Scroogey this year and only buying for a few people, 'cause I just don't have any money! I'm sending lots of cards, though.

Mom: clothes of some kind
Dad: clothes of some kind + socks
Brother: gift certificate?
Boyfriend: box set of DVDs and maybe a nice tie
Friend 1: Starbucks gift card, maybe handmade earrings
Friend 2: Handmade earrings
Friend 3: Handmade earrings
Friend 4: Book of some kind

My sister does this same thing, but she found those red and white striped cardboard popcorn containers (the thing you'd see at a fair) at Target. She fills it with the goodies and with yellow shredded paper to look like the popcorn. They always turn out cute.

Getting a late start on my xmas shopping this year, and I'm buying rather slowly, putting more thought into gifts rather than just buying to get it done.

I have to say, it makes me feel SO GOOD to pick out gifts that I know my family will love!

I'm very far behind, but having a blast doing it this way!

Jazzberry, my future SIL gave us a similar gift last year, but she made the bowl out of a huge roll of raffle tickets. I don't know where she got the directions, but it was cool. I think you sort of pull the outer parts of the roll up slowly, keeping it all in one piece, and then go to town with modpodge.
The only downside is you can't get it really wet.

So tech boy has become almost a boyfriend (we see each other every night, but haven't stopped dating other people officially) so I'm trying to figure out what to get him. Kinda given up on the whole tech thing b/c I think he would already have anything he could possibly want in that area. So we went out on Saturday and he was drinking martinis for the first time and loved them. I am thinking about getting him a martini gift set (glasses, shaker thing, etc). and a book that I think he would like.
Is this personal enough, but not too much? Christmas was so much more easy when I wasn't dating!

When I see how many people you all have to buy Christmas presents for, I'm amazed- and so glad I don't have to exchange with so many!! Luckily in my family, each family (the parents, really) gives gifts only to each other's children, so I'm off the hook. So I only have to buy for my fiance, my mum, and my best friend (the rest of my friends don't exchange, by agreement.) I've pretty much finished all my shopping, it just needs to be wrapped now.

For my fiance, the Wall Street tycoon, who basically requested what he wants: 3 white dress shirts from Br00ks Br0thers (sooo boring, but if that is what he wants...), a pair of jeans, the Seinf3ld seasons 1-3 dvd set. I'm thinking of buying him a book (he's not a reader, but I try to get him into it by buying him "the interesting book of the moment". Last year I got him Fast Food Nation and DaVinci Code. Any ideas? I'm thinking of a book I saw published by the Onion people.)

For my mum, I got her two collectible teapots (she's a fiend and has them all over the house), and two cardigan sweaters to wear on airplanes. She's really hard to shop for- she looooves jewelry, but she knows my fiance and I just bought an apartment and have a wedding to finish paying for in June, so she'd be livid if she knew I splashed out on an expensive gift for her this Christmas.

My best friend is getting Origins Cocoa moisturizer...it is silly spendy, but it does smell divine. She is hoping to find her soulmate in 2005, and smelling like scrumptiousness should help her do it!!
