I don't want to sound too valley-girlish but I had this revelation the other day. I go to a smallish university with lots of rich southern belle (well, northern belle too!) types. In the dining hall yesterday, a girl walked by carrying the cutest Christian Dior baguette. Not just a handbag with a discreet label on it. I'm talkin the big flashy gold "D" charm hanging on the front. I practically drooled, and not because of the food! I was so envious. But the thing is, she was wearing flip-flop thong sandals, cotton gym shorts (with the top rolled down) and a tank top. It bothered me that she would dare to carry that bag while just doing the usual everyday stuff. I have a pretty good purse collection and they are all under $100, with the exception of my one Louis Vuitton hand-me-down from my mother. If I'm wearing gym shorts and sneakers, I wouldn't even think about using that purse. To me, that's just saying a)Hi I'm pretentious and have money to throw around or b)This is just a purse. Then of course I laughed to myself at the thought of having "respect" for a purse. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Hmm...I understand what you're saying. It does seem a bit pretentious to carry such an expensive bag while just going out & doing errand-type things. However, it could just be laziness - I have been known to take a nice bag somewhere casual b/c I'm too lazy to transfer my stuff out of a nice bag to a casual one.

I'm either practical or poor, because I can only have one purse at a time, and I can't stand to spend more than $10 on a bag. It just seems silly to me -- it's a pocket with a strap, for crying out loud! I don't know why, but I've just never been able to understand the idea of having expensive or multiple purses. Can someone please explain this to me?

I have a black wool and leather shoulderbag for the winter, a small black leather purse for when I don't need much, and a crocheted rayon bag for the summer. I think it would look silly for me to use the wool bag in the summer and so on. However, that does depend on your purse. And I also like having a small bag that's not bulky for going out. It fits my wallet, cell phone, and keys with no room to spare.

My new purse is brown vinyl with white piping, looks remotely like a retro-ish bowling ball bag with a cell phone pocket on the side. It has pockets in all the convenient places, but they're big and useable rather than small and inconvenient. I got it at Wal-mart for $7.96 and I really like it.

My last purse was black and pretty cool, but not very sleek and it had seen better days. When the zipper broke and the strap was about to come off (held on with two safety pins), I had to get another one. The black one hit the trash, though... only one purse at a time for me.

I guess I only ever have one purse because I never go anywhere requiring a "formal" handbag or something. My life is very basic.

You know, I just can't understand the attraction for Kate Spade or other expensive bags. What is the point? I mean, if you are wealthy and into image, I guess that's one thing, but I know people who have Kate Spade bags and no money. Why spend moola on a purse if you don't have any money to put inside it?

Or if you're afraid to take it anywhere, lest someone steal it or it get dirty or any one of a million things that could happen to A Really Expensive Purse. I feel the same way about expensive shoes. I find it ludicrous to spend $400 on a pair of shoes that involve fewer materials than a $2 pair of flip-flops and match even fewer articles of clothing. AAAGGGHHHHH!!

Sorry... I think designer accessories are a total pet peeve of mine.

I have a Kate Spade. I love mine.

*hides*

No seriously, it is the first one I've ever bought, and I am 29 years old and have been working professionally for 4 years post-graduate school. I am supporting my 2 boys, and I frankly don't buy a lot of designer items. But for some reason, I had decided that my one splurge purchase was going to be a Kate Spade. Because I thought I deserved something nice and not necessarily essential. Besides, it is a baby bag, for chrissakes. Even though I got a designer item, there was a small nagging voice in my head that told me that I should at least get something "practical." I think in my case, it's a little different-I am usually toting Quincy around, so I don't think it's a big deal to wear my kung fu pants, flip flops, and a tank top and sport my KS messenger bag.

Frankly, there are a lot of girls around my area that carry Kate Spades, many of whom look college age or just a tad older. Given that the cost of living around here and what I know about the average income of people around that age, either they have one or two (like me) or are independently wealthy-or maybe are in the process of learning spending priorities.

I dunno, I kind of have a thing for purses. I love my "Fake Spade"--you know, the kind you buy on the street in Manhattan for $25...I've never spent more than that on a purse. I do have one or two I use on an everyday basis, and I have the others either as impulse buys or for event/outfit-specific purposes. I definitely can't see myself wearing more than my carry-all messenger bag with sweats or a casual outfit like that! It's like that girl I saw on the "Sorority Girls" marathon today (is anyone else hooked on that show???) who was curling her hair and putting on gobs of makeup to go out in a sweatshirt and jeans! Insecure much?

Am I a bad person that I adore bags and shoes?
Not that I have anything more designer than Coach, but if I suddenly became wealthy, after moving my parents east and putting my brother through school I would start some crazy spending at Barney's, both on gorgeous shoes (*nothing* makes an ok outfit look pulled together more than great shoes, imho) and on a couple great purses.
I have two totes -- one straw for summer, one black leather for summer. And I have one little leather purse for going out, and two medium sized ones (all but the straw purse were gifts from my boy, who understands my love of good leather). I never really use one of the medium sized ones, but I switch off between everything else depending on how much I'm carrying and what I'm wearing.
I have very wide feet and serious foot pain problems, so my couple pairs of Cole Haan shoes were tremendously good investments for me -- ok, they cost $140, but I can wear them for 15 hour days without being in agony. Plus after two years of hard use, they're still in good shape.

I have to say I whole-heartedly agree with SB (as I normally do ) I have a Kate Spade diaper bag for my yet to be born bambino, it seems to be very well made and it was one of the very few we looked at that hubby was willing to carry. I have to admit to being addicted to nice bags and shoes, it probably has something to do with this area, but I carry a purse every day, I work hard and I deserve a nice one damnit! I also still carry (sometimes) the first Coach purse I ever had and it is over 10 years old.

I LOVE designer bags and shoes. I wear clothes from Old Navy and Target, but I adore designer bags. I have a Dooney and Burke signature bag that I splurged on and carry almost every day. I recently attended a fake bag party where they had the best fake Spades I have ever seen. I bought two. I am throwing a fake bag party in a few months. I can't wait!

I drool over Louis Vuitton bags. I will own one, someday.

I bought a $200 leather tote yesterday, on sale for $98. I was actually proud of my "deal". Kip is aghast that I would spend that much money on a purse, but the truth is, expensive bags are higher quality and typically last longer (IMO, with the exception of Kate Spade--the corners get ragged.)

I feel more put together with a designer bag. Even if I am wearing sweats.

A coworker of mine has a bag from almost every designer label--Prada, LV, Dooney, Coach, Kate Spade,Fendi, etc. I get SO jealous. I just like nice things.

Well, if you are then I am too. I have over 40 purses/bags currently. Granted, they are not designer bags, but mostly because that's not the style I perfer. I generally don't like anything with a logo on it, but that's just me. Mine are mostly vintage or somehow kind of quirky... either with funky designs or colors or something of that ilk. And of course I have my "professional," more conservative bags as well... and my fancy dress-up bags... and... and...

And yep, I actually use 'em all. I change bags usually about 3 times a week. There are usually about 4 stacked on the stool of my vanity table because I'm too lazy to take all the stuff out of them and put them back in the closet.

As far as the girl with the designer bag and the gym clothes. I wouldn't get upset about it, mainly because I just generally don't care about protocol/rules... and it is a purse afterall, regardless of how expensive it is or how much it's loved. It's a functional item.

I will be the first to admit I'm a bit of a fashion snob. Not that I care what other people are wearing or have, but I care about what I have. I cannot use a brown bag if I have on black shoes or a big bag if I'm going to the bars. I don't use my evening bags during the day and vice versa.
I have one Coach bag and one Kate Spade. Both of them are quite versatile (brown and black), and I've had the Coach for years (since high school). For bags, I'm willing to spend a lot for a good one that I can use often. I have a ton of inexpensive but cute bags of other colors, including my prized pink $16 fake Spade from Chinatown NYC (I'm so proud of my bartering skills). Even my cheap purses last a long time though because I rotate so often. I keep mints in each one and just rotate my wallet, cell phone, keys, and lipstick.
As for shoes, my gym shoes are probably the most expensive. I have a ton of them, but I don't usually spend more than $50 on a pair unless it's really special, really versatile, or really sturdy.
To answer your question of why, I can only answer for myself, but when I have spending money, I typically spend it on clothing and accesories rather than other things (cds, electronics, things for the home, etc). I saved up to buy my Kate Spade in college. Looking put together is important to me, and I love fashion, so I put my extra money towards it. I will say that I always do my best to find the bargains though.

Well, I inherited a bunch of vintage bags from my great aunts, and that's what pretty much got me started on my "collection." I shop at a lot of vintage stores and little independent stores that generally seem to have different stuff. That probably doesn't help too much since it's not a specific place, but my sources are pretty varied. I've bought a couple at Urban Outfitters. They usually have some fun stuff.

Oh... and of course I bought a kick a$$ bag from hotgluemama's site. I get tons of compliments on that one.

After going to a h.s. (some of you may recall my rant about Saving Ms. Karyn) where this stuff was ultra-cool to have and I was of the not-so-monied Liz Claiborne (late 80's) crowd, I have issues with spending so much on such things, but I can appreciate well-made things, and that it why I splurged on a black coach bag and wallet. The bag was even on sale, yey for me. I know I will have it forever because I take good care of my possessions & it's not too trendy. I can't see spending so much on a Spade because they just don't hold up as well IMHO. I did find a store around the corner from me that has all the good fake brands, so if I get a hankering I can go there.

I don't think the girl was being disrespectful to the purse... Who cares as long as she's not trying to impress the hell out of someone with her fashion sense?

I will admit to drooooling over some BCBG $98 wedges that I am dying for. YUM. I can't stop thinking about them!! I have never spent that much on shoes, ever! Never! However, I am thinking about the practicality of buying one pair of versatile, decent shoes instead of 3 pairs of cheap ones. This may just be that time. hmm.

People can spend their money however they want...and that's what makes it interesting.

Ever since I moved to Hong Kong, when I see flashy logo bags I assume they're fake. Even the real ones (of which there are many here too, it's a very, very label town) look fake to me now. It's just that the fake ones are everywhere, and if I see that little LV logo anywhere in the world I automatically assume it cost 5 bucks from a HK street market.

I have a bag that is much bigger than it looks - it's sort of boxy, and while it fits under my arm at a pinch I can fit an extra change of clothes in there, and it has a mobile phone pocket, which are pretty much my 2 criteria for buying a bag. I love it - I keep meaning to go back to Marks & Spencer to get another before they discontinue it (oh god, I didn't realise how sad that sounded until I typed it. M&S is *really* middle-aged). My excuse is that it's brilliant for travelling, but actually I'm just far too lazy to swap all my junk from one bag to another. But I admire women who do!

I totally WOULD have a million bags, but I'm so anal about my bag requirements that by the time I find a cute new bag, my old one is on the verge of dissolving in to a small pile of threads and a rusted zipper.

I have two purses, both on the verge of falling apart. My wallet is on its last legs too. It takes me FOREVER to find new ones - I comb the mall for hours looking for exactly the combination of pockets I want. One purse must have pockets x, y, and z, be able to hold this, not have a pocket for that, have a zipper here but not there, have a strap like this, not be leather, be waterproof, not have obvious logos. Purse B must easily accomodate my wallet, keys, and a pen, but must not be able to hold anything else, to keep me from carrying dumb shit like a crescent wrench around, and also no logos or leather. Meanwhile they must both be cheap. Wallets must have a clear pocket for my bus pass, and a change purse, and no logos, and no key rings, but lots of card space, and an inner pocket for emergency quarters and stamps.

So right now I have a threadbare nylon purse-let with a stuck zipper, a green and orange bag with a big ink stain on the front, and a wallet with holes in it that my cards keep slipping out of. Ssss-wank. Not. I have one emergency purse in reserve, and it's awesome, but it has so many pockets and it's so deceptively large that I can't use it - because I start to fill it up with 8 million things "that might be useful to have!" (Like matches AND a lighter! Even though I don't smoke or know anyone who does!) I can't throw it out though, because it has the coolest name - it's the Tilley Pick-Pocket-Proof Purse of Many Pockets, aka the P5. It's, get this, dishwasher-safe. Heehee.

I typically laugh to myslef when I see a chic in, say, her running gear, carrying some big professional or "dressy" bag. I think that's as tacky as - some of you will kill me - socks with sandals. Whatever, though. To each her own, right?

I usually have little beaded bags. I'm a sucker for anything sparkly, and my favorite bags are little homemade ones. Girly bags. My very favorite - how's this for conceited? - is one that I made a few years back, but I broke the handle and have been too lazy to fix it. It's a flat shape, about a six inch square, and is made completely of clear, bronze colored beads. Then, it's lined with a piece of black velvet that I hacked from the bodice of a hideous former ensemble dress. The beads were all in this lacy woven pattern that I'm not entirely certain I could duplicate again, but you had to have a lining for it because it was full of holes. It was sturdy, though. I mean, if you took the lining out, it held it's shape and everything, but it would have been useless for holding anything because it had 1/2 inch holes all in it. Anyway. Yes. I like little girly bags and I use them - as inappropiate as my mother thinks they are for daytime - any time I want except for when I'm in my running gear or something. Ma calls them "evening bags". I won't tell you what I call her.

I actually am having a difficult time finding a work bag. Something funky, but stylish, and can hold a three inch binder when I go to meetings. It wouldn't be a stand-in for my purses, but a stand-along for when I'm lugging stuff to meetings. Anyone know of anything like that? Coach has some really nice leather ones that are perfect, albeit a smidge conservative for me, but they're like $200 even at the Coach Outlet. No thanks.

Edited to apologize for hijacking yet another thread.

I made a great little bag recently out of recycled denim and a hot pink feather boa. I use it whenever I can! If you want to see it, it's at http://www.sixpixie.com/bags.html with the rest of the bags I've made. I use them ALL! (The "Dana bag" I use to carry my keys to and fro.)

Emcarb,

Don't know if this will be funky enough for you, but I've got an Eddie Bauer briefcase that I really like. oodles of pockets, can fit my laptop - plus other goodies at the same time and expands with this cool zipper thing that I try to keep always zipped in the un-expanded position to curb my tendency to over-pack.

Here's the link. http://www.eddiebauer.com/eb/product.asp?product_id=21690&nv=5|214|1216&cm_cg=C 1216&tid=&c=&sc=

Also, I think InStyle magazine had something in their August or September issue about choosing bags and had some cute laptop carriers... the stuff they have in there is always beautiful, but alas, out of my price range.

hope that helps a little

Edited to ask Briddy about this "fake bag" party. Sounds fabulous. After your party, you'll have to tell us how to throw our own. Sounds like a fabulous time!

I know someone who knows someone who knows someone who goes all over the place and buys up the best fakes, brings them back to the states, and sells them. This is her job. It sounds like an awesome gig if you ask me.

I was trying to figure out how much money she makes on average. She probably buys the bags for about $20 apiece, then sells each one with a $20 markup. She sold 40 bags at the last party I went to, so that is an $800 profit, in a few hours. If she throws maybe 2 or 3 parties a week, that's $6400 to $9600 a month! That's not bad for jetsetting and selling fake handbags to suburban moms! Minus travel expenses, the rest is money in the bag (all puns intended)!

If any other Denverites are interested in coming to my par-tay...let me know!

Are there not fake bag vendors in Denver? Just curious. $40 seems like a lot to me for a fake, but I guess the convienience of having someone else bargain for it, plus the social enjoyment from the party can be worth it.
At first, I didn't know there were good fake bag (authentic looking labels and all) vendors in cities other than NYC, but I've since seen them in Chicago, Boston, and DC.

I'm on the bag-on-its-last legs camp (although my current one isn't -- all I can say is it's incredibly sturdy, because I've been slamming it around for 5 years or more) because I have a problem ... I can't stand to replace anything until it has literally fallen apart/gotten totally ruined. Shoes, purse, coffee mug (the handle broke off mine but I kept drinking out of it until my then-boyfriend gave me another one). I just have this super-cheapskate gene. I guess it comes from not having very much money growing up. I'm not tight when it comes to others at all, but I just hardly ever spend money on myself. Therefore, I'm afraid I've tended to accessorize like a scarecrow.

As for the designer bag and the sweats -- Nah, wouldn't ever bother me. I've never been one for transferring things to another purse either.

Yes! I love that bag. I totally almost ordered it a few weeks back.

Thanks Hermia for sending me over. I usually avoid this thread to try and curb my spending urges.

I love handbags. It's one of those things that are suitably practical but have immense variety of use. And you don't have to wear a certain size to get into one. I own about 10 I'd say, mostly vintage and inherited from my grandmother, but I pretty much live out of one main bag until some special occassion requires a different one, going out or whatever. My old favorite bag was the 'big red bag' which is bright red vinyl, rectangular with feet and a handle. It's really really large. No pockets, latches on top. It was really a statement bag but it's starting to fall apart so I've had to demote it to special occassion use only. My everyday bag is just a plain black Liz, roomy with pockets. I love Maddytrue's boa bag, totally gives me the urge to make a bag for myself

All this talk about bags! Here's my bag.

It holds A LOT in those 2300 cubic inches. Yamsized amounts. But, because I'm in school, it's basically like a locker that I cart around.

I got it for ten dollars when a friend with access to the LLBean employee store spotted it. It had someone elses initials monogrammed on it, and I picked them out with a safety pin. I LOVE THIS BAG.

When school's not in session, I usually just use a wallet. This summer, though, I DID splurge on a marked down to four dollars black canvas purselike thing from WalMart.

Hee, yamsized. It's the new système internationale, the yametric system!

"How much does that trunk hold?"
"4.2 yamsizes."
"and how tall are you?"
"Why, 1.4 yam-lengths."
"How much of a crazy, whiny princess is she?"
"Oh man, her yam-fraction is 0.89."
"Damn, that's a lot. How can you stand it?"
"Earplugs, man. I buy them in bulk - packages of 4 yam-lots and it only lasts me a couple weeks at best."

I have the purse/shoe fetish chromosome too. The boy rags me about it all the time, but I don't care.

My tastes aren't all that expensive- just excentric. I like looking at junk shops and consignment places-- my favorite is a structured bag with midevial folk dipicted on it's sides. the side with the clasp has a knight on a white horse. Tres' chic. I will have to post a pic... It was $10 at a consignment shop, and I am sure it's worth way more. It has the original maker label inside and everything... I need to look that up....

Oh, you girls are going to be the death of my bank account.

I just bought the shoes I was coveting, my sassy BCBG wedges...oh they are pretty.

True to form, I did not pay full price. I magically received a 10% off coupon 2 days before I planned on buying them! Plus, I saw them at another store for $12 more. So, I saved $22 (or 44 Yamdollars), right? :P

alas, no online link found to these beauties.
