Ok the long hair topic inspired me.

Why did you cut yours off? Do you like it short?

Mine is very irritating long because it gets very, very dry and it just hangs there being all limp. So I would do ponytails all the time to get it out of the way. But short it looks cool, and I can do neato spiky things with it when I go out dancing.

I had hair a meter long, then I cut off about a foot and it felt so good and so much easier to take care of that I got a really short bob cut a month later. Whee! But then it grew out to that annoying "can't... quite.. make a ponytail..." stage, and it was really hot out, and my scalp was being all like "I have dermatitis! Nyah nyah!" so I got my boyfriend to shave it off. Ahhh.

I'm sick of looking like a cancer patient or a drill sergeant, though, so I'm trying to grow it out. We'll see how much patience I have with annoying unstylable short hair, though, before I cave in and shave it off again...

I keep my wanna-be curly hair between chin and shoulder length. I think I have too much jaw for a shorter cut, and my stupid hair just flops if it's longer. I'd love to have long curls down my back, but I'm never going to get past the shoulder phase...

i went away to school in 1996 and began slowly progressivly chopping my hair shorter and shorter. (it started out mid back) the culmination of short came in april 2000 when i shaved my head bald. i didn't do it to be cool, i was so incredibly ultra-depressed, that it just felt right at the time. but of course, i thought i looked cute, and seemed to attract an amazing number of jamacian black men. one man saw me on the street and said, "you're cute. you're bald, but you're cute." what am i suppossed to say to this?

anyway, i decided that i want to grow it long again. it is now in that nasty, crappy, in-between stage and is very much approaching mulletness. it's so bad. i'm going in for a hair cut today in hopes that they can do something with it to make it look cool, but not force me to lose all of my length on the top at least. i'll let you know how it goes...

I dreaamed about cutting my hair off. However, I had GREAT black, sleek hair. It would look dreadful on me, but...

Anyway. I was cutting it myself, looking in the mirror. And I was doing it DAMN well!ok, going to the dream dictionary now to interpret that.

ok! i did it. i got it cut today. it was bittersweet. she did a good job of removing any trace of mulletyness by cutting it into a cute bob right to the bottom of my ears. it took care of everything that i wanted it to take care of, and left me cuter than cute to boot. but, as this is not the normal place i go, i ended up suffering sticker shock when the time came! and what does one do in a situation like that? it's not like you can try and find the same product another place, it's a haircut. anyway, i ended up shelling out nearly $60 for this cut including tip. oh, but i always forget to tip the shampoo girls, and she did do such a nice scalp massage...

Yay! I was going to start this topic myself. The long hair thread made me sad... I've tried growing my hair out a few times, but I dye it platinum blonde using Blondissima Ultra, so it's texture is like straw that has been dried out for a really really long time. The longest I got it was about a little less than a year ago, after a horrific experience. I had decided that I wanted to go red, so I dyed it with Feria (sp?). The roots were a deep purple colour (it was supposed to be a nice natural looking red) and the tips were still white. I tried combing it and huge chunks of my hair were falling out... Tell me this doesn't sound like a nightmare...

Anyway, I ended up cutting it to about a half an inch long and trying to grow it out with my natural colour, so it would be healthy. Man, did I ever feel ugly. My natural colour is that mousey, greyish, blondish, brownish non-colour. I think that is the colour they call "dirty blonde". Wow, that makes me feel much better.

Anyway, I was growing it out, then dyed it red, and got it past the horrible stages (yes, I had more than one horrible stage). And, I also did have that mulletiness happening as well at one point, lwasie. Aaahhh!! I got it to about just past chin length, then rebelled after my boyfriend dumped me and chopped it off and dyed it black. That looked horrible and boyish, so I'm back to bleaching it again.

The thing I hate about short hair: my hair grows really fast so I have to cut it once a month to keep the style - I spike it all up in an anime style craziness, so it needs constant cutting to be short enough to spike, yet long enough that it looks cool and anti-gravityish. I also hate roots. My hair is almost white, so my roots tend to look black when they grow in (my roots are about an inch long right now, since I've been broke cuz of Christmas ) So most of the time right now I wear this cool black satin "head rag" thing which has Japanese dragons embroidered on it to hide its horribleness.

Things I love: versatility, less money on shampoo, my face isn't hiding any more (I once had a hairstylist tell me my face wasn't pretty enough for short hair can you believe that?! - needless to say, I didn't stay for the haircut...), and feeling cool in the summer. I think having short hair has made me feel more confident and less self-conscious. I used to hide behind my long hair and hoped no one would look at me. Sorry for such a long post guys....

I've worn my hair short for many, many years now and I love it! I had grown it out a bit a few years ago and wanted to get it cut short again, so I went to this supposedly trendy place with picture in hand of this totally cute pixie cut, all excited to get my hair cut. Well, this total BITCH of a hairstylist looked me up and down and told me that she would only cut a person's hair in a style that complimented their "body shape", and if she cut my hair like the the style in the picture I would look like a "pin head". I couldn't believe it! I felt like saying to her, "Why don't you just call me a big ol' fatty fat butt and get it over with, lady". Sheesh...

laughing about fatty butt.

with you. of course. silly hairstylist.

Why did I cut off all my hair?
I had been pondering it for months. my then boyfriend kept telling me not to do it. I went to a hair person in Berkeley and she told me it wouldn't look good. last time I ever went there. So then there was this heat wave in San Francisco. and the boyfriend was being a butthead. and I was going to do an AIDS ride. and I was at school playing in the school graduation in the sun and sweating! and just couldn't stand it any more. So, the day before I went on the California AIDS Ride 4, I had all my hair hacked off. how liberating. the boy was horrified, I was so very happy and it did make the aids ride so much easier. washing hair in a trailer when 10 other sore and aching people are waiting is no good when your hair is long long.

now I am growing it out, years later. it served its purpose. got a new boy (much better) a new job, and haven't been cycling in about a year.

Ahhhhh... I got a long overdue haircut last night and I feel so much better. My hair is usually in various short styles although I have had a few periods of long hair. It's been short again for about a year. I got a new cut last night and I totally love it. It's got kind of longish layers (but none of it falls below my mouth), and is a a bit tasseled looking. My hair is naturally dirty blonde which just kind of grays out my whole complexion, so I have it dyed a dark auburn, which looks much better with my pinkish skin. And I got my eyebrows waxed which always makes me feel totally fresh... nothing worse than unruly eyebrows.

Ahhhhhhh... I just feel... good. I love that a haircut can do that.

I need a haircut so badly....I have kept my hair around jaw length (sometimes earlobe, sometimes below the chin) since 1997 -- I figured out as a senior in High School that I liked keeping my hair straight, and it was much easier when it was short. Also I have very fine hair, and it is wimpy and stupid when it's long. I can't wear it in a ponytail because it's so fine that I have the skinniest ponytail ever. When it's shorter it looks fuller and much cuter.
I just get it cut in a straight bob, undercut in back because that hair is straighter. I love it when it's short in the summer -- I can smooth some gell into it and it dries into a little flip.
I love that I can blow-dry my hair in about 8 minutes, or it air-dries in about half an hour.

Short hair rules!!
I was always told that I couldn't do short because I have a round face. Also, I was told I couldn't do funky and choppy cuz my hair is too curly for razor cutting. My hair is too thin for the piecy look, so I always did the boring one length at the shoulder thing. Unless you count the big hair days (you KNOW when those were...) it's always been the same.
But then I found the most fabulous hairdresser ever and he just cut all my hair off. He says he gets all his stress out on my head and just chops away! It is hot down here in GA, so thank goodness I never have to have hair touching the back of my neck again!!
I love short hair!!!

Mine is about 3-4 in past my shoulders, I am thinking of getting some long layers. It's finally warm enough that I go w/out blow-drying in the a.m., but it's all one length so it's doing weird wavy fuzzy things. A little laying will give it some direction to go in.

I used have the Meg Ryan-ish short 'do, and I loved it...but I hated that I had no options of up/down/ponytail/whatnot. That was totally a wash-and-go too. Loved that part of it. I am sooo not into doing my hair.

Breana, I know exactly what you mean. I hate having hair all over the back of my neck, especially when it's so hot out.

However, I'm at an in-between stage where I should get a cut if I want to keep it short, or get a 1/8" off if I want to grow it out like I *think* I do. I'm kinda sick of having it short, because I can't do ponytails, and I've been having these awful, half frizzy/half curly hair days. I don't know if it's my gel, or shampoo, or what. It's so awful; it just accentuates all this underchinfat I have

But! in high school I had it about clavicle length, and it looked good, so I'm gonna shoot for that again. I have fine hair (which could probably account for most of the frizziness) but I have A LOT.

People like to play in my hair for some reason. They think that because it has some visual texture it's fun to pull it (and make it go boing!, kinda like a slinky hanging on a hook...any other curly people get this done to them???) or stick their fingers in it. NO that just makes it frizzy, thank you. tee hee.

I normally wear my hair about shoulder length. That way I can keep it out of my face but it isn't so long that I can't do anything with it. Every few years, I go through a cycle and I get it all chopped off. One time I got it cut shorter than the guy I was dating. He freaked because he certainly didn't have long hair. I got a bowl cut type thing where it was shaved (to the skin) in the back and just slightly longer on top. This was after I had had it to about the top of my bra strap and permed (I looked like one of those poodles that people sahve bald but leave their ears curly. Worst perm ever) I got it cut short and then let it start growing back out. Eventually I got engaged and decided to grow it out for that because I wanted to wear it up. It was about the small of my back and then I got pregnant. I got it cut to the top of my bra again and then a few months later decided I hated the whole thing and I wanted it short again. So again I got the back razored and the top was all spikey. Now I'm in the process of grwoing it out again. Right now it is at that terrible in between stage where it is long enough to spend most of its time in my face but not long enough to pull it back in any way. When I got it cut real short the stylist made me promise that I wouldn't freak out when she started cutting since we were going from quite long to really short. Finally I showed her a picture of the last short cut to assure that I would be fine with it

oh my gosh yes! i hate when people play with my curly hair and make boinging noises. it wasn't funny the first time and it's still not funny. oh well i guess that's the price you pay for having such coveted hair. (for some reason all the ladies i work with wish they had curly hair......little do they know it's not that great) i go through soooo much gel, i should probably invest in the stuff

I had curly hair down to my bum when I was at high school. It was unbelievably hot in summer, and having it in the regulation school ponytail used to give me a headache every day.

Once I'd decided I wanted it cut short, I didn't tell anyone - long hair (especially long curly hair) seems to be regarded as public property, and virtual strangers have no qualms about touching it or telling you you must never cut it. Anyway, I got my mum to lop it off at ear-level (my hair is pretty forgiving of amateur attempts on it - I cut my own hair for years), and never felt better. I can't stand it now if my hair touches my collar - I *love* short hair.

I'm surprised at the prevalence of the view that chubby people can't carry off short hair - I actually think long hair can make people look heavier than they are, and that the right short cut can really set off a plump face.

that is so true about long curly hair being public propery. my hair was really long as well, and i got it chopped off (about chin length.) soooo many people kept telling me i shouldn't have cut it....oh and that it looks cute short. um ok thanks.
Also some of my friends are determined to try and straigten my hair. i keep telling them it won't work. for some reason some of the curls just won't go straight.
the curly hair people must unite! leave our hair alone! hehe.

Ya know, ya just gotta wonder about people...

every time I go to get a haircut, the woman (or man, but male stylists are rare; i've had only one) complements my hair, *asks if it's natural*, goes on about it on a little monologue (bouncy, volume-y, whatever), cuts it, and then proceeds to straighten it! And doesn't even do a good job! If you want to straighten my hair, you must dry it completely, otherwise I will end up with a frizzy head of ugly, curly, wavy, and straight hair and I will thoroughly despise the person who did it to me.

Lets the curls free! All they want is freedom! hee hee tee hee hee Don't restrain them! They will just prove to be unruly, like undisciplined children!

Yeah, I think you're right Sophie. My face is a bit round, and I always feel like longer hair makes me look both heavier and older. When I have had long hair I almost always wore it pulled back for that reason.

curly heads unite! i don't mind the "is it natural?" question so much, but i can't stand it when random people put their hands in my hair. if you like the curls so much, just leave them alone--you're frizzing 'em up!

i tend to let my hair grow in cycles too. i grow it long and then chop it all off. i love the shock of it

edited to say that perhaps we should have our own curly hair thread?

I agree too. My hair was "heavieast" at the bottom, and flat on the top. The result? Lots of attention and volume in *ahem* second chin area. Who wants to draw attention to a double chin?

I think it's because short hair exposes your neck. Long hair can really add weight - unless it's beautifully styled I think it's easy to end up looking like Dilbert's colleague (can't remember her name, but you know the one with the triangular hair).

I just got my hair chopped off this past weekend. It's not *that* short--still grazes my shoulder--but it had been below my bra strap for ages. (That's how my friends and I measure hair length for some reason...where it falls in relation to the back of our bras.) I had psyched myself up thinking that I wasn't at all attached to the length, so when I went to a trusted hairdresser, I told her my parameters (not high maintenance and not shorter than the bottoms of my earlobes) and put my head in her hands. I had to stifle a wave of panic when she just grabbed a handful of hair in back and sheared it all off with a razor. But the good thing is that I couldn't change my mind. Took me a couple of days to get used to it, but now I love it. It frames my face nicely (and yeah, my face looks thinner when I wear my hair short), it's easy to do, and I feel all sassy because it has all kinds of layers and flips in every direction.

Hi,

I've been trying to grow out my supercurly hair and it's driving me crazy!!! It's also really thick too.

I had it quite short for a while but then read all of these articles about how 99percent of men prefer longer hair blah blah blah. So I've held back and only had a couple of cuts-trims. It's still only neck covering length and I think it sucks since it's kinda layered, 'fro-y, takes forever to work with. I've been getting compliments but I'm still not into it myself. It's very time consuming for such little results, I think.

I really want to go back to my super short haircut but I'm gettting married soon... & oh, I just bought this cool convertible headband tiara-ish thing and I also have a veil with the comb attachment. Waah!!!

I've yet to even see a bride in the wedding get-up sporting supershort hair.

I don't even know *what* that would look like or if I could wear the headpieces anymore. But I'd feel way more together!

I'd ask my fiance's opinion but I guess I don't want to hear it if he disagrees, you know? But I don't know if it's okay to just show up shorn all of a sudden. Also wedding pictures..cringe, shudder!

Anyways, do you all have guys/friends that are cool with your short hair dos? or do you even care? (the betterway to be i know)

well, my boyfriend shaved my head for me, so I guess it's not THAT big a deal for him. I think he likes how my hair looks when it's longer, but y'know, he still thinks I'm pretty cute with short hair or even my current pseudo-mullet, so I don't let that influence my hair decisions much.

if he complains, you can say short hair is less hassle during sex.. that would probably shut him up.

Well, seeing as how I'm not interested in 99% of all men... I mostly don't care. It's always been about what I think feels good and looks best on my head. My h actually prefers short hair though... he thinks it's just a lot more contemporary and makes a woman seem more "with it." Also, when I have had long hair he hates all the excess hair that falls off in the bathroom and everywhere else.

If you are about to get married though, I might hesitate to cut mine off though. Mostly because I wonder if one more big change can really be good for your stress level. And if you end up hating it and have to have it like that for your wedding then you might be more sad about it. And you're right, for the wedding styles, long hair is more versitile. I'd recommend looking a lots and lots of magazines (especially those bridal ones) to get ideas for how to do your hair. You never know, you may come across a short style that you really like.

Kat -- when i got married, my hair was pretty short, in a layered graduated cut that grazed the bottom of my ears in the front, cut shorter in the back. i didn't wear anything in my hair. but i also had a very non-traditional wedding/dress. my friend wore a white flower tiara/headband-like thing and i thought it looked great!

Right now my hair is red and down a little past my shoulders. It's at the length that I always start wearing it up in clips and ponytails. And it's incredibly thick and wavy. But around this time of year, that same old urge always hits me. I go every summer and cut my hair shorter and have it colored a light brownish blonde. Besides that, I'm heavier, and having shorter hair really does make your face look thinner. So when i get paid next, i'm going summer short and blonde. Yeay

Wow, thanks for all of the advice! I still haven't done anything drastic... I'm thinking of either letting it be until after the wedding Or maybe getting the cut when he visits next? I might even ask his opinion first...i know, that's sooo lame.

It's weird, I cut my hair really short a few months after we first started dating, then grew it medium, tried some hair extensions, then took them out, went shorter again, bleached it, all sorts of things.

Actually, he's never expressed a preference!

I guess I'm more nervous about the reaction of people in general. Also whether this will make look my age, or maybe older or younger?
The long or longish hair thing is sooo ingrained and tyrannical. At least where I'm living.

Also,I've had to be extra careful with my clothes to not look butchy when my hair is short. My body type is sort of mesomorphy, w/ wider than normal shoulders. I'm 5'4" and about 142 pounds too.

The summer is cool, w/sundresses and all but the winter, for me it's harder to still look femme-y when my hair's cut.

well, I HAD a shaved head, for about a year. it was pretty cute, but I got sick of it, so now I'm growing it out. I'm about four inches along and entering the dreaded mullet phase which I hope passes soon.

I am a huge champion of go-with-your-gut feeling. I did and have never been happier about my haircut.

I had long wavy hair since high school and thought I could never get the guts to chop it off, but entertained the fantasy of having cute short hair. Finally, during my junior year of college, I made the appointment and brought in a picture (of Meg Ryan in City of Angels) - something I had never done... copy a Hollywood haircut! - and said do that to my hair. It looked pretty good. I've since had it chopped shorter so now it's a little more pixieish, but I get so many compliments, especially from people who knew me with long hair. Lots of people I have met since "the chop" say they couldn't imagine me with long hair, because the short hair fits my personality.

So, bottom line, you instinctively know what's best for you. If you're considering it, go for it!

happy haircuts to all!

my hair is four inches ALONG, people, I didn't say I was four inches long.

(I'd never say that because I'm really 6 inches tall and I always wear three inch heels, making me almost a foot tall. I ain't no puny four inch person.)
